Chai Mitzvah
Our membership committee has a wonderful program.
It meets once a month during Hebrew School hours on
Sunday. Please respond to join this group. Here is the
info:
What does your meaningful Jewish life look like? Our
tradition tells us that an integrated Jewish life involves
study, ritual and social action. Explore all of these on
your terms, with your personal interests through a
new adult education initiative called Chai Mitzvah. You
will participate in a monthly learning group with a specially designed curriculum that focuses on real life,
relevant issues. You will also choose an individual
study topic that is personally interesting to you. Adopt a
new ritual or deepen an existing practice and engage in
a social action activity in your community. Then, at the
end of the nine month program, you can celebrate your
journey.
To become a Chai Mitzvah, or for more information,
contact our synagogue office.
To learn more, go to the Chai Mitzvah website

SISTERHOOD
We would like to share with you this article from Women’s
League for Conservative Judaism.
Wellness & Learning
A different Kind of Bequest
In the Jewish tradition, the preparation of an ethical will
bequeaths gifts to our children and grandchildren—not sterling
or real estate, but hopes and dreams that ensure a vital and
emotionally stable adulthood. Here is a sample ethical will:
For you, my child
May you go to sleep every night feeling safe and protected.
May you always have a sense of curiosity and wonder.
May you be creative.
May you take joy in Jewish learning and tradition.
May you choose friends who are loving and supportive.
May you always be accepting of others.
May you be playful, poetic and resourceful.
May you listen wisely.
May you find a community that supports you religiously and
spiritually.
May you be resilient when difficulties arise.
Our best wishes for a pleasant summer,
Arleen Klapper & Arlene Rachman
Sisterhood Co-Presidents

Dear B’nai Jeshurun Family,
I hope everyone is having a wonderful and restful
summer.
At the annual Men’s Club regional President Dinner
members of B’nai Jeshurun won the raffle first prize
of $1800 in gift cards and the second prize of $750 in
gift cards.
Be on the lookout for information on the following
upcoming events:
We will be having a Scotch and Steak dinner in the
Sukkah. Details will be sent out soon.
We will also be hosting the Sefer Haftorah the weekend of October 24. Please join us to see this beautiful scroll. This is a scroll of all the Haftorahs for the
year.
As always with the High Holidays soon approaching
the Men’s Club will usher and greet all the congregants.
Shalom

THE IRIS SWEIG MEMORIAL GARDEN
The Iris Sweig Memorial Garden made its debut in
October, 2006 on the grounds of Congregation
Bnai Jeshurun after one and a half years of
planning.
Named “A Garden of Peace” … “Gan V’Shalom”
the project was a fund raising idea conceived and
managed by Sisterhood. Professionally designed
and planted by Wiesner Brothers Nursery, the
garden is a very peaceful place, soothing to the
eye and contributing to the lovely natural
surroundings of Congregation B’nai Jeshurun.
The Landscaping plan consists of four “Pocket
Gardens” planted with shrubs and colorful
perennial specimens on curved raised beds. Two
existing tall pine trees were incorporated into the
garden with benches and plant material
surrounding them. The fourth pocket garden ( in
the middle) consists of twelve large stones placed
in a circular pattern, depicting the “Twelve Tribes
of Israel”.
Sisterhood’s mission was to create a sense of
peacefulness where members could sit and reflect
on the rich history of Judaism and all that it
teaches us on how to offer their own individual
prayer for PEACE in our time.
The IRIS SWEIG MEMORIAL GARDEN is named
after a dedicated past-president of Sisterhood who
also served many years on the Congregation’s
Board of Trustees. Iris, who was an English
teacher at I.S. 72 for twenty-five years, is
remembered as a woman who gave unselfishly of
her time and effort in many areas of the
Synagogue.
We invite you to visit the Garden often and experience this peaceful oasis nestled so close to our
beautiful Synagogue.
