St. Jerome Says Farewell
To Fr. Joe and Fr. Ivan
Pictured L-R: St. Jerome’s Fr. Joe and Fr. Ivan.
Please join parishioners and friends of St. Jerome
Parish on Sunday, January 20, 2013 from 1:00 p.m. 6:00 p.m. in the school hall at 2801 South Princeton Avenue.
At this time you will have an opportunity to offer
your well-wishes to Father Joe Grbes, Pastor & Father
Ivan Strmecki, Associate Pastor, at an Open House Reception as they leave for their new assignments.
Fr. Joe will head the Croatian Franciscan Custody of
the U.S. & Canada in Hyde Park.
Fr. Ivan is to be Pastor of Sacred Heart Croatian Parish in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Let us show our gratitude to these two very special
Spiritual Leaders in our community. Hope to see you
there!
SPRED Program Resumes
After a six week rest the four Spred communities
who gather at the Spred Pastoral Center, 30th and Lowe
Avenue, will retum in February. The adult men and
women from neighboring parishes accompany our
friends with intellectual or developmental challenges,
down syndrome, autism spectrum disorders, cerebral
palsy with a developmental delay, epilepsy or leaming
problems.
These children, teens, young adults, and adults with
a variety of abilities also gather with us from neighboring parishes. We would like to know if there are others
we haven't met who would be interested in learning
more about us.
Presently, one of our groups has people waiting to
welcome three more young adult friends between the
ages of 17 and 21. We also need a few more adult volunteers in some of the groups.
SPRED is a unique faith development program designed specifically for the needs of our friends. Being
part of Spred is like giving yourself permission to be
on a retreat once a week. In each of our four groups,
each person with special needs has a one on one friendship with an adult volunteer. The groups consist of 14
people but six are our friends with special needs and
the eight who welcome them.
Training is provided so one is most comfortable with
the program and how it operates. Training begins Saturday, February 9, 1:00p.m. to 6:00p.m. at the Spred
Pastoral Center. A volunteer needs no experience with
people with special needs just a willingness to grow in
friendship and faith with others.
For more information call Elizabeth Sivek, Spred
community religious worker, at 312-842-1039, ext. 13.
There is no commitment just an inquiry. Growing in
faith is a process so we can form a deeper relationship
with our God through and with others who would miss
us if we were not there.
De La Salle’s Ramirez
Signs Letter of Intent
De La Salle Institute proudly announces that Ricardo
Ramirez, a student-athlete, has signed letter of intent
with NCAA Division I universities for the 2013-14
school year.
Baseball player Ricardo
Ramirez (McKinley Park)
has chosen the University
of Illinois at Chicago.
“Ricardo is an outstanding young man,” De La
Salle president Father Paul
Novak, OSM said,“He has
worked exceptionally hard
to reach his goal of becoming a Division I studentathlete.”
“Not only does he excel
in the classroom, he is also an exemplary leader who
has brought a great deal of pride and success to everything he has done at De La Salle. I look forward to
watching him thrive and compete at the highest levels
of college baseball in the future, concluded Fr. Novak.”
Ramirez, a member of the 2012 All-Chicago Catholic League baseball team, batted .435 with three home
runs, 11 doubles, 32 RBI and 21 runs scored last season. De La Salle congratulates Ricardo Ramirez on his
accomplishments and wishes him every future success.

Holden School News
Happy New Year! With each change of the calendar year, many of us have a tendency to reflect and to make resolutions that will lead to self-improvement as we
head into the new year. Holden School’s resolution for the new year is to continue
to provide an education rooted in the fundamentals that will ensure our students are
on the path to becoming college and career ready. We can achieve our goal by closely
working together with our students, families and the community with the hopes of
strengthening our school community.
A few ingredients are necessary for this year’s recipe for success. In the spirit of
collaboration and team work, we need the support of all our parents in helping with
the following: It is absolutely essential for students to attend school each day and to
arrive on time by 7:45 a.m. It is equally important for students to arrive to school prepared to work with the necessary school supplies. Lastly, please take time to read
with your child every day and make sure they are following through with their studies.
Now that the holidays are behind us, we look forward to having the students back
to start off the New Year well rested, focused and with a lot of positive energy. Together we can make our 2013 resolution a successful one!
Important Reminder
NWEA Testing has begun! Throughout the month of January, all students in
grades kindergarten through eighth grade will be taking the NWEA test. The NWEA
test is a very important assessment that determines how students are progressing in
their reading and math throughout the course of the school year and provides parents
and teachers important information regarding the students’ strengths and weaknesses.
In order for our students to perform their very best on the NWEA test, we are asking all parents to help us by doing the following at home: 1) Remind your child of
the importance of doing their very best on all tests especially the NWEA, 2) Make
sure your child goes to bed at a reasonable time so that they are well rested for testing, 3) Make sure your child has had the opportunity to eat a balanced breakfast the
morning of testing, 4) Take time to read with your child every day and make sure
they are following through with their studies.
A letter about NWEA testing was sent home with students on Friday, January 4th.
Please take a moment to review it and to discuss it with your children. Please know,
that with your help, we can ensure that the students are ready, well prepared and will
be successful on the NWEA test. We know that working together is the key to success. Thank you for your support and again, HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Acknowledgements
Holden would also like to thank all the teachers, students and parents who helped
make the 2012 Winter Fest a success. A very special thank you goes out to our
Holden’s Student Council and to Mrs. Evans and Mrs. Murrihy. Without you, the
event would not have been possible. The Winter Fest was a colorful and magical
event for students to enjoy before they went on their winter break. The Student Council designed and created an indoor carnival with games and attractions along with raffles and prizes. Although the Winter Fest was geared towards our younger audience,
it was enjoyed by children and adults alike; as well as Santa, who made a special appearance for our students!

Veggie U is Coming to
Robert Healy Elementary
$ %# %$ &( $" "
$ $ # '!"# The Veggie U classroom garden program is underway at Robert Healy Elementary. This unique program
was designed to teach children about nutrition and the
importance of making wise food choices, as well as
introduce them to the concept of sustainable agriculture. Veggie U’s attitude surveys show that participation in the program increases the likelihood that vegetables will remain a healthy choice in the students’
diet.
Early next week, the students will receive a box of
unusual Tasting Vegetables from The Chef’s Garden, a
sustainable farm growing heirloom and specialty vegetables.
The mission of Veggie U, a non-profit, is to promote
the well-being of children through a healthy lifestyle,
with a focus on making wise food choices. Veggie U is
an effective way to combat the growing epidemic of
childhood obesity and diabetes, and the onslaught of
packaged food marketing aimed at school children.
Created by a team of educators, a physician and a
nutritionist, over 2200 of the classroom garden kits
have been placed in 29 states.
Veggie U's Earth to Table curriculum was inspired
by chefs and farmers, and developed through the volunteer efforts of a nutritionist, doctor and local educators. The team recognized that children would greatly
benefit from understanding the connection between
what they consume and how that food is grown.
Educating children in an engaging, experiential way
helps them to learn. Veggie U's science-based program
offers a hands-on seed-to-planting-to-harvest experience. A complete grow kit is provided along with a
comprehensive teacher's manual written to cover state
and national science standards. The benchmarks for
these standards are included at the beginning of each
lesson so that teachers can integrate them into existing
curriculum.
In addition to a hands-on, scientific approach to
learning about plants and their components, the Veggie
U curriculum incorporates extensive journal activities,
mathematics, language arts and fine arts, providing an
interactive & enjoyable way for students to study these
core concepts. The classroom lessons include studies
of soil, composting, planting, nutrition and plant
anatomy. The students also care for a worm farm, raise
a mini “crop” and celebrate the end of the program
with a vegetable Feast Day.

The students of Santa Lucia were so happy to help Natalie in this small way by
raising $1,000 to help her family get Natalie all the care she needs. Cards & prayers

McGuane Baseball is
always looking to evolve
and one of those ways is
by offering the opportunity to its advanced players
to play more games in a
travel environment, without the typical costs and
time commitments associated with many fullfledged travel teams today.
Entering its third year,
the Mavericks are a parttime, in-house travel
teams that enables players of McGuane Baseball the opportunity to
play extra games against
outside teams. The league plans to have teams
at the 10u, 11u & 12u
age levels this year. For
the 12u team, they will
be participating in 3-4
tournaments, including
an August trip to Cooperstown, NY. Prior to
finalizing rosters, the
league will be holding

Seasonal program provides residents with an environmentally-friendly tree disposal option. The Chicago Department of Streets and Sanitation (DSS), in
partnership with the Chicago Park District, invites residents to recycle their Christmas trees, thru January
18, 2013, to help keep alleys clear and reduce the
amount of materials deposited in landfills.
“Recycling Christmas trees is an easy way for residents to make a big impact on the environment,” said
Mayor Rahm Emanuel. “Each year, we are able to
recycle thousands of Christmas trees to divert more
waste away from landfills and reuse the materials in an
environmentally-friendly way.”
Trees dropped off at any of the 23 locations will be
ground into fragrant mulch by DSS and Chicago Park
District forestry crews.
The resulting mulch will be made available to residents at no cost at the same Christmas tree drop-off locations beginning Friday, January 11.
Ornaments, lights and garland should all be removed before placing the tree in the Christmas tree
corral.
The City is not able to accept decorations, tree
lights, wreaths, garland or household recyclable materials at these locations.
Since the program began 24 years ago, more than
157,700 trees have been kept out of landfills. More
than 14,300 trees were recycled last year alone.
For additional information on the program call 311
or visit: www.cityofchicago.org. Participating location in our area is McKinley Park,
2210 W. Pershing Road.

St. Barbara Students
Embark on
Investigative Work
CRYSTAL CLEAR
Innovative Therapy
for Tinnitus
Pathologist, Alexia and reporter Joe pose with the
missing elf. Another crime solved!
The seventh and eighth grade students of St. Barbara
are engaged in investigative work thanks to their social
studies teacher, Mrs. Nicole Nolazco. Based on an
educational book called,“Using Science and
Critical Thinking to Solve Crimes” the students have
been busy at work using critical thinking strategies to
solve crime investigations. Their first crime was, The
Case of the Missing Elf.
The goals of the unit of study is to have students use
skills such as the scientific method, scientific research,
critical thinking, making observations, analyzing facts/
data and drawing conclusions in isolation. The study
of forensic science allows students to practice these
skills & see theories put into practice by using circumstances that model real-life events.
Students also explore a variety of career opportunities since they take on the roles of odontologist, forensic anthropologist, pathologist, forensic engineer, ballistic analyst, toxicologist, serologist, crime reporter,
police officer, sketch analyst, suspects and witnesses.
The students engaged in fingerprinting, blood and
DNA testing, crime scene investigation techniques,
analyzing handwriting samples and hair samples and
shoe print investigation.
All of the upper grade teachers are involved (science, math, social studies and language arts), therefore
there is a great deal of collaboration on the teachers’
parts in order to ensure the project is as student-centered and educationally engaging as possible. Each
teacher includes supplemental activities and learning
opportunities to help students understand the interdisciplinary nature of the project. The students love this
fun way to apply many skills into their learning.
It’s estimated that one in 10 adults suffer from tinnitus, or persistent
ringing in the ears. Tinnitus can have a significant effect on a person’s
quality of life, leading to depression, fatigue and memory problems.
Many tinnitus sufferers become withdrawn from their friends and
regular activities.
But now there’s relief. The Mercy Tinnitus Center provides an
innovative, non-invasive treatment. Personalized Tinnitus
Adaptation Therapy, or PTAT, is a leading-edge therapy that retrains
the brain to adapt to the tinnitus. Mercy is the only hospital in the
Chicago area currently offering this effective treatment option. PTAT
is customized to each patient and is more affordable than any other
acoustic treatment available in the Greater Chicago Area.
