Time at the Crisis Nursery is structured to help children feel safe, manage
stress, and build resiliency. Our childcare protocols, called The Nursery Way,
make time at the Nursery count for children. Crisis Nursery time is quality time.
We improved the quality of the information garnered at the intake process. The
Family Basic Needs Assessment reveals family needs for shelter, food, clothing,
hygiene, transportation, and child care, as well as child health, development and
education, and the parent’s income, employment, education, health, and safety.
After we have seen a family at the Crisis Nursery three or more times, we talk
with parents about the opportunity to work with our home visiting program
called 4th Day. The consistency and quality of time spent in families’ homes
helps them transform their lives.

Greater Minneapolis Crisis Nursery is not about the beds we fill. It is about the
quality of the time we spend with children, parents and families.
Our residential shelter is a portal for families to access an array of Crisis Nursery
services. As we fulfill our mission to end child abuse and neglect and create strong,
healthy families, our focus is on long-term change for the families we serve.
Quality time with the Crisis Nursery begins when a parent calls our
24-hour crisis line for help. On that call, we begin to earn the trust of a parent or
guardian who cares deeply about her children and wants to work to make real
change in their stressful lives. During the past year, 89% of the Hennepin County
families we served had household incomes of less than $10,000.
You helped us provide a continuum of care to thousands of families. Your
support allowed families to address crises such as homelessness, illness, or
domestic abuse, and connected parents and children to vital community
resources that they might not have otherwise accessed. Your generosity
allowed us to make significant progress in our 3-year strategic plan. In June
2011 we will finalize a revised plan covering the next three years.
With funding from individuals, foundations, community groups and corporations,
we made significant changes to increase the quality, impact and effectiveness
of our family intake process and childcare programs. Through a grant and
partnership with the Homelessness Prevention and Rapid Re-Housing Program
(HPRP) we were able to double the size of our home visiting program called
4th Day. Through the support and guidance of home visiting, many of these
families have made significant change in their lives.
We are extremely grateful for the impact your generosity has had on our ability
to provide high-quality programming to prevent child abuse and neglect and
strengthen families in our community. Thank you.

Many families who call the Crisis
Nursery are stressed to the
breaking point. Many are facing
serious issues that increase the
risk of child abuse and neglect;
issues such as homelessness,
poverty, isolation, domestic
violence, and mental health
problems. When a parent or
guardian places a child in the
Crisis Nursery’s overnight,
residential shelter, a family
advocate meets with each family
for a formal intake process.
This year the program staff
worked with Wilder Research
to revise a Family Basic Needs
Assessment. On a scale of 1 to
5, parents assess whether or not
they are able to meet 11 basic
needs, including food, transportation,
clothing, childcare, employment,
health, and educational needs.

This time with parents allows us
to effectively and efficiently guide
them to the services they need.
At intake a parent establishes
goals and immediately begins to
take action. They might need to
contact a community resource,
obtain a mental health assessment,
or find safe and appropriate
childcare. The quality of the
conversation at intake helps a
parent focus and begin to address
their issues.
Research has shown that when
a family’s quality of life improves,
even marginally, it significantly
alleviates the intense stress that
can lead to child abuse
and neglect.
Last year, 89% of the families we served

homeless and at least 38% had previously
experienced domestic violence.

For more than 10 years, the Crisis
Nursery 4th Day home visiting
program has been helping families
build upon their strengths, resolve
serious issues, and break the
cycle of crisis in their lives. Last
year, we expanded 4th Day to
assist families with housing
needs through a Homelessness
Prevention and Rapid Re-housing
Program (HPRP) grant from
Hennepin County.
With two full-time field workers and
two graduate interns we doubled
the number of families we serve.
Additionally, we are able to
provide direct financial support
such as rent subsidies and
deposits, utility payments, and
other housing costs, to help
families attain or sustain affordable
housing. The goals of home visiting
are to prevent child abuse and
neglect, decrease family isolation,
increase provider collaboration and
family stability, and teach
parenting skills to create a secure,
nurturing environment for
children. Our successful,
strengths-based approach to
home visiting empowers parents
to resolve issues that cause
intense stress and crisis.

Home visiting focuses families
on making substantial changes in
their lives, changes which reduce
the risk factors associated with
abuse and neglect.
4th Day home visiting is a 12 to 18-month
partnership between parents and the
Crisis Nursery. In weekly home visits,
parents set goals and work to achieve
them. In this quality, one-on-one time
parents learn how to provide a safe,
nurturing home for their children.
