RETIRE?
“Out of the Question”
The word retire is not in my vocabulary!
I have been asked many times lately, “when
are you going to retire?” The answer is
“NO TIME SOON or MAYBE NEVER!”
As long as I can get up, go to the Chat-AWhyle Restaurant at 5:30 am and have my
morning coffee with the guys, I WILL GO
TO WORK!
For the past 31 years this has been my
schedule. Times have changed and my age
has told me to cut back on the heavy
mechanical repairs, but I am still at PRO
AUTO SERVICE 5 days a week 8:00 am
to 5:00 pm for general auto repairs. Nights
and weekends, my WOODWORKING
BUSINESS is the relaxing job I enjoy!
So for you who keep asking about my
“retirement”... come into the Chat-A-Whyle
for coffee about 6:00 am. If I am not there,
I am probably on vacation...

VETERAN PATIENTS
We Salute You Area Veterans...
The National Salute to Veteran Patients, formerly the National Salute to Hospitalized
Veterans, was established in 1978. This nationally recognized week gives every American
the chance to thank Veterans for their freedom by sending cards to VA medical facilities
or taking the extra step to visit our heroes or volunteer to serve them.
The Bath VA Medical Center began as a New York State Soldiers and Sailors Home. Initial
funding for its creation was generated through a public appeal initiated by the Grand Army
of the Republic (GAR) in the 1870s. The first corner stone was laid June 23, 1877 and the
streets of Bath were congested with over 20,000 visitors. Keynote speakers included former
Governor Edwin Morgan and Rev. Henry Ward Beecher, (brother of Harriet Beecher Stowe).
The first residents of the home, Civil War Veterans, sat down to a Christmas dinner in 1878. The
grand opening of the facility actually took place on January 23, 1879. Between 1878 and 1929 the
home served wounded combat veterans of New York State. The state facility, reached a peak
population of 2,143 in 1907, but due to increased age and deaths, these ranks were reduced to 192
by 1928. The facility was turned over to the federal government in May of 1929 and in 1930 became
part of the Veterans Administration.
Today, the Bath VA serves over 12,000 Veterans of the Southern Tier
of New York and the Northern Tier of Pennsylvania. The facility provides
primary medical care, emergency room services, acute care, nursing
home care (Community Living Center), Behavioral Health Outpatient
Services, and maintains a Domiciliary Residential Rehabilitation
Treatment Program. The VA also provides challenging careers for
nearly 700 employees who take great pride in serving America’s
Veterans - a tradition that has been on-going for 134 years at the Bath
facility.
A Military and Medicine Museum containing artifacts dating back
to 1776 is maintained on the grounds to honor the facility’s long
history. A national Cemetery with roots dating back to the Civil
War is also located on the Medical Center Grounds.

House

When Paula Parker acquired the former Wallace Church building in 2007, her plan
was to turn the former sanctuary into a facility for special events, as well as a Bed
& Breakfast. Built around 1883, the building remains true to its original country
architecture. A circular star stained glass window which stands out near the ceiling
in the former pulpit area, along with high tin ceilings, are part of the charm of this
unique gathering place. The historic ambiance lends itself to weddings, commitment
ceremonies and other celebratory events.
The Parker House provides two comfortable guest rooms, located in the former
Sunday School wing, which are decorated in country charm. The Belle Rose Room
and Shelly’s Room are both named after former members of the original church.

I’ll Wait For You was started in Jan.
2009. I worked at Philips for 30 years
and occasionally needed to take time
off for repairs and deliveries and had
to use vacation or personal time to
meet these calls.
After retiring, I needed to “get out” of
the house and I remembered I had to
wait for repairmen, installation people,
etc. and so the business came into
being.
I do a lot of home watch service for
those who winter in warmer climates.
I have done calls for their furnaces that
have shut down and needed
maintenance. I’ve had a hot water
tank that have sprung a leak and
needed replacement. I care for many
houseplants in homes while the owners
are gone and Kitty Care has come
about also. I care for your cats while
you’re away.
