2011 Winter Newsletter
“And then she saw that there was a light ahead of her; not a few inches away where the back of the wardrobe ought to have been, but a long way off. Something cold and soft was falling on her. A moment later she found that she was standing in the middle of a wood at night-time with snow under her feet and snowflakes falling through the air.” ~The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe Camp Narnia 2011 The magic of Narnia has returned and what an amazing time we had last summer! It was wonderful to work with such dedicated and creative staff, to welcome back Narnian campers from before the long winter and to meet all the new Narnian campers that came for the first time. Aslan is most definitely on the move! And here we are on the move bringing everything up to camp last August and setting up Camp. All packed and ready to go! Putting up the flagpole So many thanks! Royal Narnian heraldry Camp Narnia could never have re-opened with the success we had without the help of many people. Thank-you to Carol for her support, encouragement and practical advice! To Ron Fosker, our neighbour from the Shawnigan property for our lovely campfire benches, our flag pole, my campfire chair (which has a place of honour in my classroom right now), cedar for Homesteading and for some other special items. Thanks to Dave who made our archery targets and those wonderful banners that added so much colour to Camp and who also lent his time and skills to helping us set up camp. And finally thanks to Haida for her support and the loan of her Aslan statue and to my parents for our firewood. We are all so grateful! How do you keep that Narnian spirit alive? Here’s what Joel, one of our teen counsellors and longtime Narnian does… “If the Pata Pata comes on the radio: I stop, drop, and dance. I keep a piece of See-Daar, next to my bed, so that I can sniff it to make sure I don't forget the smell. At Hallowe’en I dress as a Marshwiggle and then explain to everybody what one is. Some mornings, before work, I go for a run to a local park. I always check the biggest tree for knowledge... just in case.” It’s not that hard to take Narnia with you wherever you go which is exactly what Catherine, one of our kitchen fairies, did this fall… LAMPPOST PATAPATA CREPESONASHOVEL LUCY RUMBLEBUFFIN TRUMPKIN CEDAR WHITEWITCH ARCHERY MRSBEAVER KITCHENFAIRY KAYAK WARDROBE A great winter Narnian recipe! Narnia in pictures So many great pictures to choose from! I wish we could fit more in! Spotlight on our Staff Fiona Trotter I first went to Camp Narnia when I was eight. It was my first time at a stay-over camp and was such a success that it became a permanent fixture in the childhood summers of my sisters and I for the next seven years. We built campfires, went stargazing, made ice cream and fudge, put on plays, and danced dozens of Pata Patas. The best part of Camp though, for me, was always the sense of acceptance I got when I was there. I was a really imaginative kid and Camp Narnia was such a unique, creative outdoor experience that I was able to move from shy, nerdy youngster to a confident, happy young teenager, and to form some truly wonderful friendships. I really learned how to "do my best and enjoy every step" at Camp, so when I heard the words "Aslan is on the move" last year, I was instantly off. Helping to reopen Camp Narnia has been an incredibly rewarding experience, the best of which is being able to introduce some of my favourite activities to a whole new group of children. Their enthusiasm reminds me of my eight year old self, with many crepes-on-a-shovel ahead of me, and I look forward to creating magic and adventure with campers new and old for many summers to come. Jess Birch I first went to camp with my older stepbrother when I was five and loved it so much that I went every year after that right through Teenland. My favourite activity was always homesteading since I had some amazing foodies in my groups (counsellor Courtenay had a way with making an all-in-one stir fry skillet sensation). My second favourite activity was vaulting on the horses; I still miss Tirian to this day, he was absolutely the best with Aravis coming in at a close second! Stargazing was also a special activity for me and I still love it to this day. It is amazing just how many more stars you can see when you get away from the city. Now that I am a staff person, the magic lives on although in a different way since now I get to see behind the scenes of activities and ceremonies. Being able to work with amazing staff in order to provide the space for new campers to imagine and explore their own way through camp is magical in itself. The campers are my main magic now, and I wouldn't have it any other way! Summer 2012! Set sail upon the Dawn Treader and join us for an adventure to remember! August 5th – 11th and 12th – 18th Register before March 31st and take advantage of our early bird discount! Watch our website and facebook page for updates. We hope to see you there!
