2007-08 NEC Women’s Volleyball Scholar-Athlete of the Year:
Martina Wagner, Long Island
Major: Marketing
Long Island senior outside hitter Martina Wagner took home NEC Scholar-Athlete accolades in
women’s volleyball last year. Wagner, the 2006 NEC Player of the Year, was a three-time first
team all-star who helped lead the Blackbirds to three straight league championships and a
24-0 NEC record over that span. She ranked first on the circuit with 0.86 service aces per
game and 5.26 points per game last season, and also finished second in kills (4.08 per game)
and seventh in digs (3.13 per game). For the second consecutive year, her service ace totals
placed her second nationally in the category. Wagner was recognized for her on and off the
court accomplishments with a second straight selection to the ESPN The Magazine Academic
All-District first team in November. A native of Friedrichshafen, Germany, Wagner was a
Marketing major who carried a 3.60 grade point average.

Northeast Conference Fans:
Welcome to the 2008 Northeast Conference Women’s Volleyball Championship!
The NEC, along with host Robert Morris University, hope to make this event a memorable experience for student-athletes and fans
alike. With the Charles L. Sewall Center’s state-of-the-art facility providing the atmopshere, this
championship should be an exciting one with six hard-working, talented teams vying for the coveted
berth into the NCAA Tournament.
Now in its 28th season, the NEC is proud to bring its women’s volleyball championship to Moon
Township and Robert Morris University. Consisting of 11 institutions of higher learning located
throughout five states, the NEC is committed to being an NCAA Division I leader for student-athlete
achievement, integrity, competitiveness and engagement in national policy. NEC member institutions include Central Connecticut State, Fairleigh Dickinson, Long Island, Monmouth, Mount St.
Mary's, Quinnipiac, Robert Morris, Sacred Heart, St. Francis (NY), Saint Francis (PA) and Wagner.
Additionally, Bryant University will become a core member of the NEC in 2012 upon completion of
the five-year NCAA Division I reclassification period.
The NEC encompasses five states and a variety of diverse locations, from the bustling activity of
Brooklyn, NY to the rural setting of Loretto, PA to the beaches and shoreline of West Long Branch,
NJ. But when it comes to intercollegiate athletics, the goal of the NEC is consistent - to provide its members the opportunity to
participate in quality competition at the Division I level while operating programs that are fully integrated in the academic
mission of each institution. NEC athletic programs truly focus on putting the student in the term student-athlete. The NEC placed
among the top NCAA Division I conferences with the release of the first Academic Progress Rate (APR) figures and also ranked
among the nation's elite in Graduation Success Rate (GSR) figures in each of the last two years. During the 2007-08 academic
year, more than 1,600 student-athletes earned a place on the NEC Academic Honor Roll, an astounding 47 percent increase from
the previous year, while 258 were named to the Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll with GPAs of 3.75 or higher. NEC
graduation rates for student-athletes are consistently higher than those of non-athletes.
On the field of play, the NEC has enjoyed many successes both regionally and nationally, competing in 20 NCAA championships
each year. In volleyball, Long Island won an NCAA Tournament match in 2005, and the league has featured a number of Academic
All-Americans in the sport. The future of the NEC looks even brighter with new facilities and improvements recently completed,
under construction or in planning stages at a majority of the league's member institutions.

The Northeast Conference promotes good sportsmanship by student-athletes, coaches
and spectators. We request your cooperation by supporting the participants and officials in a positive manner.
NEC member institutions value the principles of sportsmanship and the ideal of pursuing
victory with honor in intercollegiate athletics. The Conference believes that athletics
should be conducted in a way that reflects positively on the individual participants and
institutions. The essential elements of sportsmanship and ethics in sports are embodied
in the concept of character building and seven core principles: respect, responsibility,
fairness, honesty, integrity, caring and civility. The highest potential of sports is achieved
when competition reflects these seven principles.

2007 NEC Volleyball Tournament Recaps
Championship
#1 Long Island def. #3 Robert Morris, 3-0
Brooklyn, NY -- With a 3-0 (30-21, 30-22, 30-18) sweep of Robert Morris, the Long Island University volleyball team secured its fourth
straight Northeast Conference Championship in front of a raucous crowd at the Wellness, Recreation and Athletic Center. The Blackbirds hit
.385 en route to securing the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
From the outset, the Colonials showed that a fourth title for Long Island would not be easily had. Robert Morris (18-11) put up a strong fight
in the first game, going toe to toe with the Blackbirds attack, but LIU eventually pulled way to keep Robert Morris at a safe distance to earn
a 30-21 win. The second game started out tight as well, but Long Island used a quick four-point run with junior Jasmine Perez serving to
build a 10-5 lead. The Blackbirds went on to capture the second game, 30-22. In the third stanza, Long Island used a six-point scoring
streak to take a 15-6 lead. The Colonials were forced to burn their two timeouts early and the Blackbirds kept Robert Morris’ feet to the
flame, increasing the lead to 24-13. Racic put together three straight kills to close out the game, 30-18, and give Long Island the win.
The Blackbirds outhit Robert Morris by a 53-35 margin. The Colonials hit .098 for the match and were led by senior Emily Wolthuis and
junior Cassie Lee, who each turned in eight kills. Racic finished with a match-high 14 kills while hitting .462. Wagner added 12 kills and NEC
Player of the Year Shelby Heggie chipped in 11. NEC Libero of the Year Svetlana Simic tallied a mach-high 20 digs. Senior Jennifer Stambaugh
led Robert Morris with 10 digs. Heggie was named the NEC Tournament Most Valuable Player, earning a spot on the All-Tournament Team
with Racic and senior Lindsey Patty, who tallied 41 assists in the match. Robert Morris was represented by Graham, Lee and senior Tawnya
Storino.
Semifinals
#1 Long Island def. #5 Saint Francis (PA), 3-0
Brooklyn, NY -- The top-seeded Long Island University volleyball team dealt No. 5 Saint Francis (PA) a 3-0 (30-16, 30-25, 30-11) sweep
in semifinal action at the Northeast Conference Championship. The Blackbirds will face the winner of the Central Connecticut State-Robert
Morris match. NEC Player of the Year Shelby Heggie tallied 16 kills and hit a match-high .583. Junior Martina Racic also contributed a matchhigh 16 kills for Long Island.
The first game started off with a thunderous kill by Racic and an ace by Heggie. The Blackbirds stretched the lead to 9-0 before Saint Francis
broke serve on a kill by junior Kristin Buter. Long Island stretched its lead to double digits and cruised to a 30-16 win. The second stanza
got off to a much closer start with Saint Francis eventually working out a 10-9 lead. After several lead changes, the Blackbirds eventually
pulled away and took a 28-23 lead. Long Island went on to win 30-25 on a kill by Trevon Dyson. The Blackbirds got off to another strong
start in the third frame, scoring the first five points en route to building a 9-2 advantage. Long Island saw its lead balloon to 27-5 and coasted
to a 30-11 win.
For the match, the Blackbirds hit .284 while the Red Flash hit a paltry .021. Long Island outhit Saint Francis by a 48-21 margin. Wagner
recorded a match-high 19 digs and NEC Libero of the Year Svetlana Simic tallied 13 digs. Saint Francis was led by Buter’s eight kills and 10 digs.
#3 Robert Morris def. #2 Central Connecticut State, 3-1
Brooklyn, NY -- Third-seeded Robert Morris edged No. 2 Central Connecticut State, 3-1 (30-22, 30-23, 27-30, 30-26), in a tight nailbiter in the semifinals of the Northeast Conference Championship. The Colonials will move on to face three-time defending NEC champions
Long Island in the conference title game.
The first game was closely contested from the outset, with Robert Morris building the match’s first significant edge with a 15-10 lead. The
Colonials quickly stretched that into a 22-12 advantage and held on for a 30-22 win. Robert Morris took control of the second game in its
early stages, while the third stanza seesawed back and forth the rest of the way and Central forced a fourth game with a 30-27 win. The fourth
game was just as close, but Robert Morris held a slim lead most of the way. Central would come back to tie several times, but the Colonials
put together a 7-0 run to go up 26-20. The Blue Devils would not recover as Robert Morris won, 30-26.
For the match, the Colonials hit .206, compared to Central’s .152. Robert Morris outhit the Blue Devils by a 74-50 margin. Freshman Jaye
Hellmich led the Colonials with a match-high 19 kills. Teammate Amanda Graham chipped in 17 kills and Emily Wolthuis tallied 15. For the
Blue Devils, freshman Lauren Snyder had a team-high 15 kills and sophomore Jamie Baumert added 14.
First Round
#5 Saint Francis (PA) def. #4 Fairleigh Dickinson, 3-2
Brooklyn, NY -- Fifth-seeded Saint Francis (PA) came back from two games behind to defeat No. 4 Fairleigh
Dickinson, 3-2 (17-30, 18-30, 30-28, 30-23, 15-12) in the first match of the 2007 Northeast Conference Championship. The Red Flash prevailed despite hitting just .097 for the match, while the Knights hit .206.
With the score tied 9-9 in the first game, Fairleigh Dickinson built an eight-point cushion and held off any Saint Francis attempt at a
comeback en route to a 30-17 win. The second stanza got off to a tight start, but Fairleigh Dickinson stretched out an 18-12 lead. Once again
the Knights kept the Red Flash at bay and eventually took a two games to none lead with a 30-18 win. The Knights kept the pedal down in
the third game, scoring 10 of the first 13 points to put Saint Francis in a seven-point hole. Saint Francis used a 7-0 run to turn the tables, but
the Red Flash hung on to win, 30-28, and force a fourth frame, which was closely contested from the outset. Saint Francis came out on top
following with five straight points to force a fifth game with a 30-23 win. The Red Flash scored the first five points of the deciding game before
Fairleigh Dickinson finally broke serve. After multiple lead changes, Lindsay Malloy scored back-to-back kills for the Red Flash, setting them
up for match point. Kayla Greenwalt registered a kill to give Saint Francis a dramatic win.
Malloy led Saint Francis with 14 kills, while sophomore Ali Philbrick and junior Lauren Boothby each tallied a match-high 15 kills for
Fairleigh Dickinson. The Red Flash’s Shirley Miller turned in a match-high 19 digs and junior Karolina Kowalski led five Knights with doublefigure digs with 15.
#3 Robert Morris def. #6 Sacred Heart, 3-0
Brooklyn, NY -- Third-seeded Robert Morris dealt No. 6 Sacred Heart a 3-0 (30-24, 30-25, 30-19) sweep in the quarterfinals of the
Northeast Conference Championship, hosted by Long Island University. Robert Morris junior Cassie Lee (Vista, CA/Vista) led all players with
17 kills.
The first game was a tight one, with the teams staying within two points of one another until Robert Morris opened up a 23-19 lead and
proceeded to hit a blistering .412 for the game to claim the set. In the second frame, Robert Morris took a 16-8 lead out of the gate and went
on to win 30-25. Robert Morris kept the momentum in its favor to start the third stanza, jumping out to a 10-4 lead en-route to pushing
Sacred Heart toward elimination. Robert Morris held on to capture the third game by a 30-19 margin.
The Colonials outhit Sacred Heart by a 56-38 margin and hit .375 for the match. The Pioneers hit .188 and were led by sophomores Annie
Archer and Alex Bavasi, who each had 10 kills. Robert Morris’ Alaina Gibson tallied a match-high 17 digs. Senior Emily Wolthuis and
freshman Amanda Graham added 14 and 12 kills, respectively.
