These changes have lead to a significant reduction in the amount of waste that goes to landfill. Some examples of the changes include the swap to smaller green garbage bins and lager recycling bins, as well as the introduction of a green waste bin in urban areas. Council also manages four waste transfer stations, which actively meet regulatory and community requirements for materials recovery services. Council encourages education around waste management. St Augustine’s students recently visited the Carisbrook Transfer Station to learn more about how materials are recovered from the waste stream and how Council sorts and processes materials to maximise recovery and ultimately reduce waste to landfill. Having achieved so many of its waste management goals, council is now presented with the challenge to further improve waste management services and continue waste reduction. The draft 2011 Waste Management Strategy has been completed and is currently open for public comment. The development of the strategy has resulted from the review of the plan, which dated back to the year 2000. The new Waste Management Strategy sets out a number of key initiatives, set in the context of the National Waste Policy, and the State’s Towards Zero Waste Strategy. Council is also a member of the Highlands Regional Waste Management Group, which has significant influence towards waste management. The draft Waste Management Strategy is now available at the shire office or can be viewed on the shire’s website www.centralgoldfields.com.au. Comments or submissions on the draft strategy will be accepted to the July 15. The July school holidays are coming up and there are several opportunities for kids to get out of the house and event try something new. The Central Goldfields Art Gallery will conduct its school holiday program. The increasingly popular art workshops will be on again at the art gallery in Neill Street. The workshops are open for children aged five to 10 years. Places are limited so bookings are essential. Four sessions have been planned for July, two on each Wednesday of the holiday. Daniel Henderson from Ballarat, whose artwork will be on display in the gallery in July, will tutor the workshops on July 6 for the children. “Daniel does beautiful, mystical landscapes of the environment as he sees it from Ballarat to Maryborough,” said Kay Parkin, Central Goldfields Art Gallery manager. “The workshop should be lots of fun learning how to create and paint or draw your very own landscape.” To learn more about the workshops or to book your child in, contact Kay Parkin at the Central Goldfields Art Gallery on 5460-4588. The Maryborough Education Centre and Goldfields Children’s Centre is coordinating a holiday program for primary aged children for the weekdays of the school holidays. A new co-ordinator has been employed to run the program, and a variety of new and exciting activities are planned — there is something for everyone. Some examples include: • MasterChef Day — learn to make vegetable soup and spaghetti bolognese. No need to bring lunch! • Movie Day, with popcorn and milkshake making • Games Day — learn the sports of soccer, footy and rugby • Fashion Parade Day • Robot Making Day. A full program can be obtained by visiting the Goldfields Children’s Centre at 100 Napier Street, Maryborough. Bookings and payments are also arranged through the children’s centre. Speed humps to improve pedestrian safety Council has installed new speed humps in Clarendon Street, Maryborough in an effort to enhance the safety of pedestrians in the area. Clarendon Street is one of the town’s busiest streets, with services such as the hospital, post office, court house and V/Line bus service all located on the street. It is therefore a high volume traffic area, and council was concerned with the speed at which drivers pass through the busy area. The speed humps are currently installed for a six month trial. Council is seeking feedback from the community on the effectiveness of speed humps in improving safety for pedestrians. The speed humps have been installed at the V/Line bus stop near Havelock Street, and two more between Nightingale and Tuaggra streets. Council will also be installing speed humps in Wills Street and Alma Street, Maryborough, adjacent to the kindergartens, to improve pedestrian safety for families accessing the kindergartens. All feedback regarding the trial needs to be in writing for council’s consideration, and should be sent to Central Goldfields Shire Council, PO Box 194, Maryborough VIC, 3465. SAFETY: Speed humps have been installed on a number of roads around Maryborough. 070611 16 BUSINESS: Member for Ripon Joe Helper and the Small Business Victoria Mobile Business Centre. Improved sports centre planned The Maryborough Sports Leisure Centre (MSLC) will have new management from the start of next month, and already several changes and improvements are planned. Unified Community Sports and Leisure (UCSL) has been appointed to manage the MSLC for a three year period. Their first day as managers will be Friday, July 1, and all are invited to come in and used the facility for free. The centre will then be closed for the weekend, July 2 and 3, but will re-open on Monday, July 4 and Ride offers chance for city to shine The Great Victorian Bike Ride will pass through Maryborough this December, and council is seeking feedback from community groups that wish to be involved. Participants of the bike ride will arrive in Maryborough on Saturday, December 3 and will stay overnight, before cycling to the finish line in Castlemaine. Maryborough community groups and businesses will have a large captive audience and it is hoped many will be involved to show our guests how much the town has to offer. A community information meeting is planned for Sunday, June 26 at 6.30 pm at the Maryborough Community Hub. Those who attend the meeting will be given a brief presentation from Bicycle Victoria, and then learn about the various ways they can be involved. The meeting will then be open to questions. If you would like to be a part of the meeting or would like more information, contact Alisha Chadwick on 5461-0637. resume normal operating hours. Some of the changes that will commence almost immediately include the introduction of a cycle class. There is also new equipment to be introduced into the gym area during July and August. As well as onsite facilities, a new website is currently being developed and will provide customers with up to date information regarding the centre, as well as on line booking and payment facilities for programs and activities. UCSL will be working with council to significantly improve the fitness amenities and add additional equipment so that quality levels and customer experience are enhanced. A range of fitness memberships and options will be provided and members will be able to pay for a membership term or join using a direct debit facility. Survey on where the training is needed A new survey is circulating through the Maryborough business community to assist in identifying skills gaps. Neighbourhood Renewal, the Goldfields Local Learning and Employment Network and CVGT have collaborated on the survey in an effort to gather data that will help Maryborough residents make informed decisions about career opportunities open to them locally. It is hoped many businesses in Maryborough will participate, to enable researchers to get a thorough understanding of skills needs in the community. The survey will also help to determine the key traits employers are seeking in job applicants. This information will be shared with local employment and training services to better understand the local market. The information gathered will further assist local schools in placing work experience students, and prepare the students for what awaits them in the workplace. Neighbourhood Renewal plans to use the results of the survey to tap into Skills Victoria’s Victorian Training Guarantee, and set up courses to up-skill existing employee’s to better meet the needs of their work place. Further information about the survey, including a copy of the survey, can be obtained by contacting Matt Broad on 54612406.
