Dear Prospective Drumline Member,
Welcome to the Independence High School percussion section! We are all very excited that you’ve chosen to be a
part of this inaugural season. Your efforts and contributions in the next several months will pave a path of
excellence. Enclosed with this letter is pertinent information regarding your involvement within the IHS Drumline. The
drumline functions as an integral part of the Independence HS Marching Band. When you join the drumline you are
joining a much larger organization.
This year’s audition process is a bit unique. Currently we do not have a completed facility, instruments, or the means
to meet as a full unit for a “formal audition camp”. However, beautiful facilities, world-class equipment, and OUR
drumline are well on their way. Listed below are the 2014 Pre-Screening details:
Who:
•
All enrolled Independence HS percussionists for the 2014-2015 school year
•
All those who wish to be considered for spots on; Snare Drum, Tenors, Bass Drum, or Keyboards
What:
•
Pre-Screening video prior to Drumline Camp/Auditions
•
2-4 minute video (YouTube, Vimeo, etc.) of you playing the listed musical excerpts
•
Assessment of your individual skill sets on one of the listed instruments
When:
•
Pre-Screening video must be submitted (via e-mail) on or before Friday, June 6, 2014.
Where:
•
You may record your video wherever you’d like. Regarding equipment usage, it would serve you best to
record at your current high school/middle school. Please make sure that the sound environment and lighting
is advantages to a good recording.
Why:
•
The Pre-Screening video submission will serve as an assessment of your individual playing ability and help
determine what instrument is best suited for you. This is NOT 100% of the audition process. Final instrument
placement will be delegated during the IHS Drumline Summer Camp (see band calendar).
•
The Pre-Screening also helps in establishing the complexity of the marching show music, cadences, etc.

Pre-Screening Video – Tips
•
Be relaxed, confident, and musically expressive
•
Record several takes until you are happy with the final product
•
Play with the technique in which you are most comfortable
•
Consult your current percussion director, private lesson instructor, or peers for guidance
•
Pay close attention to tempo markings, dynamics, time signatures, and stickings
ONLY submit a video for ONE of the four instruments listed above. It is crucial that you choose one of these
instruments and concentrate 100% of your time and effort towards that music. Based upon the pre-screen, if you
do not exhibit the skills needed for your chosen instrument, you will be contacted and consulted on how to proceed.
Second and third choices will then be strongly encouraged for the audition (see personal information sheet).

2014 Independence High School Drumline
What students make up the drumline?
The IHS Drumline is comprised of 9th-11th grade percussionists that are enrolled in the high school percussion
class/band. Outside students (those who are not enrolled in band) are not allowed to participate in the
drumline.
There are two primary components that make up the drumline:
Battery – instruments that are mobile marchers on the field (snare, tenors, bass drums, cymbals)
Front Ensemble – instruments that are stationary on the front sideline (keyboards, timpani, drum set, auxiliary)
Do I need to audition for the front ensemble?
Yes. There are two categories of audition material for the front ensemble – keyboards and auxiliary
percussion. If you wish to be in the front ensemble you must exhibit your abilities so we can place you on the
appropriate instrument. If you do not audition, you should not expect to receive a demanding or desired
part/instrument.
What if I want to play snare/quads but I don’t have sticks/mallets?
Not a problem. We can help facilitate those who do not own a pair of marching snare sticks or quad mallets at
the audition. However, if you plan to audition for one of those instruments we would recommend purchasing
your own pair in order to practice prior to the audition.
How many spots will be on the battery?
There is no solid answer to this question. The anticipated battery instrumentation for the 2014 Independence
HS Marching Band is 3 snares, 2 tenors, and 5 basses. All of these numbers are flexible, to an extent,
depending upon the performance level of those that auditioned. Example: If we have more than 3 qualified
snare drummers, then we will address that number at that time. Conversely, if we have less than 3 qualified
snare drummers, then an adjustment will be addressed in the opposite direction.
How many spots will be in the front ensemble?
There is no solid answer to this question either. The anticipated front ensemble instrumentation for the 2014
Independence HS Marching Band is 2-3 marimbas, 1-2 vibraphones, 1 xylophone, 1 synthesizer, and 2-3
auxiliary percussionists. This instrumentation will vary based on the demands of the music that we play. You
will be assigned either a keyboard part or an auxiliary percussion part. Details will be released after the music
is decided upon and arranged.
What if I don’t perform well in front of others and I have a bad audition?
Marching band is a performance art. Playing in front of other people is what we do. Developing and cultivating
the skill of performing in front of others is just as important as the rudimentary skills learned to play snare drum
or marimba. One way to combat these nerves, and develop this skill, is to practice performing in front of others
(friends, family members, other teachers/directors). These exercises will help you overcome your anxiety and
prepare you for the individual audition.
Admittedly, we all have a bad audition every once in a while. The safety net for this scenario is your effort and
improvement during the summer camp. Although these components are not part of the scoring rubric, their
presence will be noted and considered if an audition is obviously distorted by nerves.
Do we switch spots during the season, or does the audition determine what I’ll play all marching season?
This audition will determine the instrument that you will play for the entire 2014 marching season. Spots are
not rotated, challenged, or traded throughout the season. The only exception to this policy is if one was unable
to fulfill their responsibility on their assigned instrument. Mr. Crawford will address this unlikely, uncommon
circumstance on a case-by-case basis.
Does this audition determine what concert band I will be in?
No. Concert band placement auditions (percussion) will be held on a different day in the upcoming fall. The
audition material for this audition will be extracted from the 2014-2015 All State Audition Etudes (released in
July).
