WINTER 2016 Edition
Principal’s Message
Semester two is quickly upon us, and with that comes
much anticipation for the events to come. Drama
productions, music concerts, celebrations, student
union activities, and
graduation events for our
seniors. Of course, our focus will be our studies
throughout the next five months, but we have so
much to be thankful for at Archbishop O’Leary, and
the opportunity to share our journey together is the
greatest of those blessings.
On behalf of the entire Spartan community, I wish
each of you the very best as we look forward to the
gifts that semester two has for us.
Take care and God bless.

March 1 – Fr Richard Leonard will be spending the morning at O’Leary.
Rev Richard Leonard, SJ will be speaking to all of our students on March 1, 2016 in the
am. We will have grade level sessions with Rev Richard Leonard. This is a gift from
our Superintendent to our school. We are only one of two schools who will have Rev
Richard Leonard join them while he is here.
Some background information on Rev Richard Leonard, SJ:
Jesuit priest Fr. Richard Leonard is Director of the Catholic Office for Film and
Broadcasting, based in Sydney, Australia. He has been a Visiting Professor at the
Gregorian University in Rome and a Visiting Scholar at the University of California, Los
Angeles. A popular speaker at the Religious Education Congress, Fr. Leonard is author
of nine books, including, “What Are We Doing on Earth for Christ’s Sake?” and, his
latest, “What Are We Hoping For?”
Presentation will be on:
The story of Fr Richard Leonard’s sister becoming a
quadriplegic in a car accident and how we can hold on to faith in a God of love in the
face of terrible times. It is the basis of his book: Where the hell is God? People go
through or are having a tough time and have asked, or will ask: why do bad things
happen to good people?
"From Darkness into the Light: Holding to Faith through the Tough Times."
Our faith in God is easier when everything is going well. But what about the times in
our lives when it is challenged, undermined and threatened by the things that happens
to us, or those we love? This critical session will help out words around how we can
hold to a God who walks with us in the "valley of tears"?

The Students' Union celebrated November by
hosting a Zombie Run on Friday the 13th that
showcased the talents of our Cosmetology
students who masterfully showed off their

school and teams who found all of them were
awarded with Subway gift certificates.
The third week of November a sports week
challenged the teachers versus the students to
three days of lunch hour fun. Dodgeball,
Basketball bump, and a football jersey challenge
brought out many teachers from classrooms to
have
some

challenging
our
students. Donations to watch and participate
raised four hundred dollars for our fundraiser for an O'Leary family in need.
In December, a day to wear your comfy

O’LEARY GREEN TEAM
The O’Leary Green Team got our whole school community involved for the Clean-the
Air-Project (CAP), an initiative to purify the air inside our school in a natural way. Ms.
Alamo Santos and a group of students, brought to each of our classrooms some of the
most powerful air purifier plants: Snake Plants and Pothos. These plants have become
our best allies to remove harmful toxins from the air. These toxins can cause asthma,
allergies and other diseases, and these plants in our classes will help us to prevent
them. They will also help the ones who suffer these illnesses to feel much better.
O'Leary Green Team and the Braided Journeys Program offered a special presentation
on Medicinal Plants. Aboriginal Biology Instructor Darrell Langevin was our guest
presenter on this topic. He shared his
traditional and scientific knowledge of medicinal
plants found locally. The students were able to
make their own medicinal herbal tea with the
plants that Mr. Langevin brought to our school.
The
Green
Team
has
also learned about
biodiversity and
its
characteristics,
with the guidance
of our Assistant
Principal,
Mr.
Duncan Buchanan. The students created their own
tropical rainforest ecosystem with some soil, gravel,
moss, tiny tropical plants, small bamboo sticks, and a
fish bowl. With these small terrariums the students
were able to study and understand first hand the
importance
of
biodiversity
in
our
planet.
If you want to take part
in these and other
awesome environmental activities, come to the Green
Team sessions on Wednesdays during PDT in room
104.
We are building a more sustainable O’Leary together…
Come and join us! Everyone is welcome!

The Staff of Popped N’ Spun wants to send out a very special thank you for all the
support that the store has received since it’s opening on October 30th, 2015!
Popped N’ Spun is a special initiative that has been created to provide some of
O’Leary’s finest SASSI Spartans the opportunity to gain work experience skills, life
skills, numeracy skills and literacy skills.
Popped N’ Spun is a small store running out of Room 240. The students are
responsible for making the treats, bagging them in our unique Popped N’ Spun logo
bags and selling their product with pride.
As semester two gets going watch for Popped N’ Spun to ‘pop’ up in new locations
around the school during lunch time. We will be selling cotton candy, popcorn and
special treats to celebrate the holidays! Each treat sells for $1. If you are O’Leary
Staff, watch for Popped N’ Spun staff to stop by with a delicious treat for your
department once this term!!
MUSIC MATTERS
Thank you to all Choir members, Junior Band and Junior Jazz for participating and
performing at our Christmas Dinner and Concert entitled:
Christmas pipes
Over 200 parents, students and staff celebrated the season in Music and Song.
Thank you to all for continuing to make a difference in Music.

DRAMA NEWS
O’Leary Drama has wrapped up an amazing semester 1 with multiple productions and
performances. Congrats to all the Students that brought drama to the many audiences
from Elementary Schools to Parents and Peers. Performances included Drama 10s at
St. Francis of Assisi and
St. Matthews, Drama
20s
Performing
“12
Angry Men and Women”
and “Arsenic and Old
Lace”,
Drama
30s
“Evening of One Acts”
and “A Christmas Carol”
at Bishop Greschuk.
Semester 2 will be a busy time for Production Performance Academy as they will be
presenting “Airline”. The cheapest airline in world history is Go Bananas Airline, so
wretched that even the Bermuda Triangle
rejects its planes. The first act introduces us to
a bevy of lovely stewardesses whose boss,
Smiling Jack Pott, is using the flight as their
’final exam.’ A movie producer will do almost
anything to stop his leading lady from boarding
the flight, and the incredible Dragbottom family
is concerned that someone has been making
bombs in their cellar. Toss into this unlikely group of people a guy who thinks he’s
Superman, an eccentric billionaire, a rock star, hijackers, incense-selling mystics and a
dancer with three feet. March 1st and 2nd, our first attempt at a 1 month only
production.
With the loss of the Main Gym stage
this spring due to renovations,
Production Performance Academy has
booked the PCL stage at the Arts
Barns for this year’s Musical to run
during the last week of April.
In May, the pace doesn’t slow as select Academy students will be participating in the
Celebration of the Arts at the Jubilee Auditorium
May 4th, followed by Academy’s “Evening of 1
Acts” May 25th.
We thank you in advance for your support of our
program!!!

Curling
We have two Curling teams representing Archbishop O'Leary this year at the Ottewell
Curling Club in the Edmonton Metro League. Team #1 finished second in their pool with
4 wins and only 1 loss; Team #2 also finished second in Pool B with a 4 and 1 record
after a three way tie breaking procedure for first place was applied.
In the finals played at the Jasper Place Curling Club, a huge CONGRATULATIONS goes to
our O'Leary Team #2 as they went on to defeat Archbishop Macdonald by a convincing
score of 9 - 3 to win their division and capture another CITY CHAMPIONSHIP Banner to
hang in our gymnasium.
The Edmonton Metro Zone play downs for our curling teams occurs through the month
of February and we are extremely hopeful to be able to qualify both our Girls and our
Mixed teams to represent the Edmonton Zone for Provincials in Ponoka on March 3-4-5.

Swimming
Congratulations to our Spartan swim team who had another fantastic swim season.
We had a total of 49 swimmers with 31 qualifying for city finals which took place on
December 14. We had a great city championship meet with our girls placing forth,
boys sixth and our overall placing was also sixth. A special congratulations to our
medal winners, Zach Roote (silver 100 freestyle), Dakota Lacoursiere-Toma (silver 100
backstroke), Justina Chemello (gold 50 freestyle), and Jacob Warren (gold 100
breaststroke and silver 200 freestyle). We are very proud of you all. Thanks so much

Junior Boys Basketball
The 2015-16 edition of the O’Leary Junior Men’s Basketball team is a promising group
who have bonded in their first two months of competition. The team currently sits in
first place in Division 1 with a 6-0 record. The Spartans boast impressive wins over
basketball powerhouses JP, Ross Shep, and St. FX during the regular season. This
version of the junior team is known for its shooting prowess and its ferocity on
defense. The team has become incredibly close and have bought into the family first
mentality that has been passed along by returning players Ian Del Rosario, Josh
Itliong, and Isaiah Samuels. With only 3 returning grade 11’s, the team has gotten
contributions from a talented group of grade 10’s which include Tevin McCallum,
Garang Uguak, Peter Okumu, Simon Kashay, Noah Ngoie, Josh Pontrivida, Rico
Cuecaco, Chris Bacolod, Armann Singh, and Jordan Gizwoski. Together, this team will
look to make a strong push in the playoffs, chasing another banner to add to the gym
wall at the end of March.
Coach: Josh McJannet
Assistant Coaches: Juriy Gaborak, Jono Harkins

Junior Girls Basketball
This years edition of the Spartan Jr Girls Basketball team has had a fantastic start to
the season. They have won their first two tournaments, one at M.E.Lazerte and the
Ardrossan Stampede Classic, and won their first three season games, giving them a 9
-0 record at the halfway point in the season. Coach Croft wants to commend her girls
on their hard work so far and hopes to see the second half of the season as
successful. Please come out and cheer our girls on in the last half of the season with
home games on Feb.2 and Feb.9 at 5pm and at the St.FX tournament on February 12
and 13th. Keep up the great work ladies!

Senior Boys Basketball
This year’s Spartans Men’s Basketball team has kicked the season off with a bang. They
currently are undefeated in regular season play and are ranked 2 nd overall in the
province! Highlights from the season so far include winning the Mike Dea Invitational at
St. FX, as well as winning the final of the BRIT tournament (Saskatoon) in thrilling
overtime fashion! The team looks to continue to build on its successes in order to contend
for a city championship and a shot at provincials.
19
Senior Girls Basketball
The O'Leary Lady Spartans started the season off with the "Alumni Game" and with
a win against Bellerose. Late November saw the ladies go to the Mike Dea
tournament with a well fought loss against Bev Facey and then on to win the
consolation side with wins over Prince George and St. Joseph. League play has seen
some tough losses especially against Strathcona where the girls almost battled back
from a 24 point deficit to bring it within 3 points with a minute left. The second half
of the season in February looks promising with the team focused coming into the
last month of play.
The team has two remaining tournaments at Sir Winston Churchill in Calgary
(January 28-30th) and at Archbishop MacDonald (February 4-6th).
Come cheer the girls on at their two remaining home games, February 1st vs. St
Joes and February 10th vs Harry Ainlay!

February 2016
Dear Friends,
The end of the Christmas season has us taking down our Christmas trees and packing up
our decorations. I pray that this past Christmas was a time to encounter God’s love as we
celebrated the birth of our Saviour, Jesus Christ. I also wish each of you a blessed new
year 2016.
On Wednesday, February 10th the Church will enter the season of Lent. Lent, a time of
preparation for Easter, is marked by prayer, fasting and alms giving. This year we celebrate Lent during the Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy. Pope Francis has invited the
entire church on a pilgrimage to focus our attention on the Mercy of God. Jesus’ words in
the Gospel of St. Luke, “Be merciful, just as your father is merciful”, are a central theme
for this Year of Mercy.
A Jubilee Year in the church includes a pilgrimage and the passing through a Holy Door.
Pope Francis has opened the Holy Door at the four Major Basilicas in Rome. The Holy
Father asked that every diocese have a Holy Door that our parishioners may enter through.
The Holy Door for the Archdiocese of Edmonton is at St. Joseph’s Cathedral-Basilica
downtown. I invite you to come in pilgrimage to the Basilica and enter though the Holy
Door as we come to an ever deeper awareness of God’s mercy. I know that our schools
have each designated a door as a Holy Door and our students have a number of resources
that will enable them to enter this Year of Mercy in a meaningful way.
I pray that the season of Lent will be a time to once again deepen our relationship with
God, coming once again to know of his mercy and love.
