Tift Regional Health System serves 12 counties in South Central
Georgia as a not-for-profit, community centered, and locally governed
organization of hospitals and outpatient centers. We have become the

Located in Tifton, Tift Regional Medical Center is a 191bed, not-for-profit referral center that serves as the flagship
for Tift Regional Health System. TRMC offers signature
services in surgery, oncology, cardiovascular care, women’s
health, neurology, medical imaging, and more.
The TRMC West Campus is an outpatient center housing
physician clinics and diagnostic services. Cook Medical
Center in Adel offers a 60-bed acute care facility, including
a 12-bed geriatric psychiatric unit and 95-bed nursing
home. Tift Regional Physician Group includes hospitalowned outpatient clinics in Tifton, Ashburn, Adel, Sylvester,
Abbeville, Ocilla, and Nashville.
Tift Regional Health System is under the direction of the
Hospital Authority of Tift County and provides for the
community’s charitable care without a financial subsidy
from county government.

Highlights
TRMC NAMED A TOP-10 GEORGIA HOSPITAL
HEART AND VASCULAR CENTER EXPANSION
For the second year in a row, Georgia Trend magazine
named Tift Regional Medical Center a top-10 Georgia
hospital. In the December 2013 issue, TRMC, a part of
Tift Regional Health System, was ranked sixth in the
Top Medium-sized Hospital category. Georgia Trend
used available state and federal quality outcome
data for its determination.
With three cardiologists and two vascular surgeons on
staff, the TRMC cardiovascular program continues to
grow. In 2013, the TRMC Heart and Vascular Center
completed renovation of 23,606 square feet of the
facility and constructed 1,400 square feet of additional
space. This project improves access and enhances the
capabilities
of cardiac
catheterization,
angiography,
cardiac
rehabilitation,
nuclear medicine,
and stress-testing
services.
INTRODUCING STRATUS HEALTHCARE
In July 2013, Tift Regional Health System—along
with several other healthcare institutions from South
and Central Georgia—announced its partnership in
one of the nation’s largest collaborations of hospitals,
healthcare systems, and physicians aligned to develop
a clinically
integrated
network. The
alliance, called
Stratus Healthcare,
consists of
29 hospitals,
14 health systems,
and approximately
2,000 physicians.
Each hospital
and system remains independent but is able to
take advantage of the shared services model. The
goal of Stratus Healthcare is to enhance the health
and wellness of residents in their communities by
improving the regional coordination of medical
services for patients, employers, and payors.
LAP-BAND® WEIGHT-LOSS SURGERY
TRHS began offering LAP-BAND weight-loss surgery
with bariatric surgeon Chris Smith, MD, in 2013.
LAP-BAND surgery is a minimally invasive, adjustable
gastric banding procedure to make the stomach smaller
and limit the amount of food the stomach can hold.
It helps people eat less and feel full sooner, leading
to weight loss. It is meant for patients who have
struggled with obesity and have been unsuccessful with
traditional weight-loss methods. Dr. Smith is holding
a clinic for evaluations and post-operative visits at the
Tift Regional Weight Loss Center, located at the Tift
Regional Medical Center–West Campus, 2225 U.S.
Highway 41 North in Tifton. LAP-BAND procedures
are being performed at the TRMC Surgery Center.

HOSPITAL MEDICINE Like most hospitals around the
country, TRMC has implemented a hospital medicine
program. A hospital medicine provider is a primary
care physician, nurse practitioner, or physician assistant
devoted solely to caring for hospitalized patients. This
allows primary care physicians on the TRMC medical
staff to focus on outpatient care, making their practices
more efficient. The hospital medicine service at TRMC
is managed by Affinity Hospital Medicine, part of the
Tift Regional Physician Group. In 2013, Affinity Hospital
Medicine welcomed new physician Kamran Lateef, MD.
YMCA COLLABORATION/NEW COMMUNITY
EVENTS CENTER The grand opening of the new Tiftarea
YMCA and Tift Regional Community Events Center was
held in August 2013. TRHS owns the 16,652-square-foot
building located at 1657 S. Carpenter Road in Tifton and
provided a grant to the Tiftarea YMCA to renovate 9,172 square feet of the facility, which consolidates health,
exercise, and wellness functions. The remaining 7,480
square feet of the building was renovated by TRHS and
is operated by the hospital for community seminars,
screenings, and other community events. The YMCA’s
aquatic pool and outdoor sports complex remain at the
1823 Westover Road location.
ROBOTIC SURGERY The TRMC Robotics Center
provides advanced da Vinci® robotic gynecological
procedures not offered by other area hospitals with robotic
surgery programs. With the surgeon most experienced
in GYN robotic surgery south of Atlanta, women can
find less-invasive relief for conditions such as uterine
fibroids, endometriosis, uterine prolapse, vaginal
prolapse, or excessive menstrual bleeding. The TRMC
Robotics Center also has two of only three surgeons in
the region offering single-site gallbladder removal and
one of only two surgeons in the area providing precision
colorectal procedures. The da Vinci Surgical System is a
sophisticated robotic platform that expands capabilities
for surgeons and offers patients smaller incisions, less
discomfort, and a quicker return to normal activities.

Regional Physician
Group, can now be

39 Kent Road, Suite 5 (in the medical office plaza near
Tift County High School). Four new pediatricians joined
the practice in 2013: Anandamadhuri Chunduri, MD;
Minaleshoa Abye, MD; Noreen Mian, MD; and Flavia

TRHS WELCOMES NEW SPECIALISTS Tift Regional
Health System added the following specialists to its medical
staff in 2013: Andrea Irwin Choate, MD, anesthesiology;
Peter Jonathan Gambino, DO, anesthesiology; Christopher
Smith, MD, bariatric surgery; Ajay Ravi, MD, interventional
radiology; Melissa Rampal, MD, nephrology and
transplant nephrology; Wes Ross, MD, ophthalmology;
Richard Beasley, DO, pulmonary medicine/critical care;
Michael Garbee, MD, neurology; Wilson DuMornay, MD,
otolaryngology; and George Yared, MD, gastroenterology
and nutritional medicine.
WOMEN’S HEALTH SERVICES TRHS welcomed two
new obstetrician/gynecologists in 2013: Geri Justice, MD,
with South Georgia Physicians for Women, and Albert
Handal, MD, with The Howard Center for Women’s Health.
Both practices are located in Tifton. Dr. Justice, along with
fellow obstetrician/gynecologists Darrell Jordan, MD, and
Lee Edmondson, MD, with South Georgia Physicians for
Women, began holding a clinic in Adel at Cook Primary Care
in 2013. Obstetrician/gynecologists Bridgett Asbury, MD,
and Sandra Brickman, MD, with Tifton Woman’s Center,
continue to hold outreach clinics at the HealthPlus centers in
Nashville and Sylvester. The TRMC Elene Dorminy Women’s
Pavilion is also finishing an extensive renovation to modernize
maternity suites and inpatient rooms.
NEW CT OFFERS HIGHER DEFINITION, LOWER
RADIATION Tift Regional Medical Center upgraded
its computed tomography (CT) scanner capabilities in
October 2013 with the introduction of the cutting-edge
GE Discovery CT750D unit. CT combines a series of
medical imaging views taken from many different angles
(or slices) and computer processing to create cross-sectional
images of the bones and soft tissues inside a patient’s
body. With 128 slices, the Discovery CT is the world’s first
high-definition CT scanner, providing unprecedented
image quality that allows
physicians sharper detail
for a more confident
diagnosis. In addition,
radiation exposure is
reduced by 50 percent,
compared with other
CT scanners.
NEW FAMILY PHYSICIAN JOINS ABBEVILLE
PRIMARY CARE Abbeville Primary Care, part of the
Tift Regional Physician Group, welcomed family physician
Betty Walker-Richardson, MD, in 2013. Dr. WalkerRichardson works alongside nurse practitioner Cindy
Meadows, NP-C, to offer primary care for family members
of all ages. A weight-loss clinic is also available. Abbeville
Primary Care is located in Abbeville at 417 S. Broad Street.

HELPING PATIENTS “CEASE SMOKING TODAY”
A group of physicians in South Central Georgia affiliated
with TRHS have teamed for a special initiative called
“CS2day” (Cease Smoking Today) to provide health
professionals with effective, evidence-based stop-smoking
clinical strategies developed by a national group of nine
academic health partners. TRHS conducted a community
health assessment using state and federal data as well as its
own survey of local residents and physicians and found that
many medical issues affecting the health and wellness of local
residents point to smoking. For more information about the
