A few words from the PREZ
Well I finally made it and NEVER thought that it would come, but on Feb 8 2008 I turned (70) seventy. It didn’t hurt a
bit. Ann and I went out to a very nice restaurant and had a wonderful meal. Ate too much but it was sure good. The
owner got wiped out in New Orleans during Katrina and came up here and opened a restaurant and he sure can cook.
Even comes out and greets his patrons.
Ann is recovering from her (4th) fourth operation on her feet. Hopefully this will finally fix the problems she has been
having for the last (4) four years. We both know that some of you have much worse problems than we have been facing and we keep all of you in our prayers.
Stan is ready for us to start sending in the reservations for your tours and to make reservations at the Hotel. Stan needs
to start compiling the lists and arranging transportation for the tours. Go ahead and make the move, he said if you must
cancel later, he can handle it with no problems. Ann and I are well aware that a lot of spouses will probably like to go
shopping instead of going to the Budweiser Brewery, All I can say is have fun.
We are looking forward to meeting all of you again, we always have a great time when our group gets together. We
have never stopped off in St. Louis, just passed through going somewhere else.
Please remember the raffle items, something that represents your home town, state or something that you make with
your own hands. The monies raised goes to keep “your association” viable. Incidentally, even with all her problems,
Ann is in the process of making the quilt again this year, just running a little behind.
GOD BLESS YOU ALL, AND GOD BLESS AMERICA
Mike Williams, President, USS Yosemite Assn.

Charles Metcalfe***58/62
Hello Jerry, What a fast past year. Hope you folks survived ok.
I thought I had until my credit card bill arrived. I said WOW.
Did I do all that. Best regards, please note Life Membership.
CF Chuck Vaitiskis***63/64
Hello Jerry, Here’s my 2008 dues money. Next December I
plan to become a life member as long as the big C doesn’t get
me again. Me and the wife had a nice time in Baltimore. I just
hope I’m up to going to St Louis this spring. I’ll close for now
and hope to see you when I see you.
George Perrault***76/78
Will always have a special place for the USS Yosemite. Made
SKC while ship was in Tampa, FL. Then became a part of a
very special fraternity along with SKCM Gibson and SKCS
Reese. Like a lot of Vietnam vets (65/67) cancer, diabetes etc
but life goes on. Wife Lois in remission with her cancer(1/03)
but fell on ice and broke wrist pretty bad.
Don Buonomo***58/60
Hi Jerry, I am forwarding 1 copy of a photo (Post Card) of the
Yosemite that was used for Christmas of 1958 and 1959. The
photo was taken in 58 as we berthed starboard side to the pier.
In 59 we were in dry-dock in Boston for the Fram 2 overhaul.
I also included a copy of the complimentary season’s greeting
cigarette pack they gave us at dinner. I wish you and your
family and all our fellow Yosemite shipmates and their families a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
John Bardes***50/52
Hi James, Just to let you know Big Bad John is still around at
83. Last year I went and burned 30% of my body and spent 65
days in a burn unit. I am finally getting back to usual again and
hope to get back to my favorite hobbies. My wife is okay and
that is about it, as ever Big Bad John.
Robert L. Gibbs
Dear Jerry, Just when I figured I’de covered all the bases someone hits another ball. Enclosed please find Bob’s obit. He was
looking forward to the upcoming reunion in St. Louis. In
March-April of 2006 we found he had non-hodkins lymphoma.
He had 10 chemos and thought the battle was won. He started
radiation in March 2007 and it cam back with a vengeance.
Surgery in June for blockage and just never recovered he went
into hospice on August 25 and passed on September 22, 2007.
Some days are not so good, but mostly we are doing just fine.
Nancy M. Gibbs.
Pete Kittelhut***
Jerry, This story sounds familiar-don’t know if you have seen it
or not. How about a brief history in the newsletter about the
post 1994 career of AD19. Apparently the homeless shelter was
not successful and the ship was sent to the James River Reserve
Fleet. There really has never been much detail in the newsletter- would appreciate more information.
John Riley***46/49
Dear Jerry, Enclosed find my 08 dues. I’m sending $32.00 for a
Life Time Membership.
I turned 80 last Oct. Hope you had a joyous Christmas and a
healthy new year.
