NEWSLETTER OF CAMP MANITO-WISH YMCA
SPRING 2016
COMMITTED TO TRANSFORMING LIVES
CAMP MANITO-WISH YMCA

DIRECTOR’S TRAIL
Anne Derber, Chief Executive
It seems that spring is
about transitions. Our snow
is quickly melting with bare
patches of ground and pine
needles already showing.
Seasonal staff is arriving
for our first Leadership
program, final information
packets for camp are being
delivered, birdsong rings
throughout the northwoods,
and daylight lasts longer.
Our staff is putting the final
touches on staff training
and programs. We have
much to celebrate as we
move into the 98th year of Camp Manito-wish YMCA. Summer
Camp enrollment is over 85%, Outpost programs have been
full since the fall, and our Leadership program continues to
grow and expand its reach.
We are committed to delivering a quality program with the
best seasonal staff we can hire, a year-round team striving
to provide excellent customer service, and a property team
working to manage numerous facilities, acres of land, and all
the “tools” needed to support program delivery.
Our staff team welcomes Paul Lovaas, our new Wilderness
Program Director, and Rudy Valadez, returning as our
Executive Chef. Dani Engmark, after two great years of
service, has accepted new challenges back in Colorado with
her husband Matt. Don O’Melia has retired after 13 years
of dedicated service to camp. We are grateful for all their
contributions.
This year we will also celebrate 75 years of providing Manitowish experiences for girls. The strength of our traditions,
guided by our mission and vision, has provided a framework
for girls to learn, play, grow and lead within their communities,
schools, and their professions. Manito-wish has empowered
generations of girls to be themselves, and to lead with dignity
and grace. We hope that you will attend the celebration on
August 5-7 this summer at camp.
Warmer and sunnier days are ahead!
We look forward to seeing you this summer. Thank you for
your continued support!
The Tripper is the newsletter for alumni, friends, staff and campers of Camp Manito-wish YMCA, Published bi-annually, spring and fall.
Circulation 15,000 households.
We mail only one Tripper to per household. Please update address information for Manito-wish alumni who have moved from your address. Thank you.

Howdy!
Hello friends,
As you read this, the Leadership
program will already be preparing to
welcome the first participants of spring
2016, from the Pass With Flying Colors
program out of Chicago. Our roster for
the spring and summer includes incamp and trail programming for youth
whom we’ve worked with before, from
Bruce Guadalupe, Carmen School and others; and those
who will be having their very first Manito-wish experience,
including students from Farmington High School and the
Goodman Center of Madison. As always, we’ll welcome
hundreds of new Schuler Scholars for ten days each
throughout the summer. We’ve begun partnering with
neighboring YMCA Camp Jorn to accommodate the growth
of that exceptional program.
For the last five months, we’ve been reflecting on our 2015
season, planning trainings for our soon-to-arrive seasonal
staff, and developing new programming modules. Among
these last is a project in conjunction with Prescott College
in Arizona to enhance our ability to teach environmental
awareness and stewardship. We couldn’t be more excited
to give each Leadership participant in 2016 a life-changing
experience here at Manito-wish!
Alex Black, Leadership Program Director
Yeah Summer Camp!
This winter was a season of dreaming,
forecasting, and organizing in
preparation for summer 2016. As
the snow now starts to melt and the
waterways reopen, a number of big
and small changes to our tripping
programs continue to be my focus
and my inspiration. Camp Manitowish is preparing to serve the largest cohort of Outpost
participants in the program’s history. When you combine
that fact with our growing Summer Camp, Leadership, and
adult-teacher program trips this summer, it is easy to see
the wide-ranging and powerful reach of Camp’s wilderness
programs. This summer will be pioneering in other ways
as we lead expeditions to new regions including Lake
Nipigon in Ontario, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore,
and sections of the North Country Trail in Upper Michigan.
Amidst all of this excitement and exploration, the
foundations of seasoned Manito-wish tripping, first-rate
staff training, and keen risk management continue to guide
everything we do. Thank you for your support and passion
ahead of another great summer. See you out there and
safe trails!
Paul Lovaas, Wilderness Program Director
Hello all!
In just a few months the Summer Camp
Programming will begin. Our team of
250 seasonal staff will be trained and
prepared to welcome 830 Summer
Camp campers to our Boys Camp and
Girls Camp sessions. Our Summer Camp
staff help create welcoming cabin
communities, facilitate and lead lifechanging trail experiences, develop
and teach new lessons in Program Areas, and strive to see
our campers laugh, learn and grow. This summer, as a result
of Camp’s Environmental Stewardship initiative, the Nature
and Outdoor Skills Program Areas have been infused with
new lessons, resources and, activities. With the celebration
of 75 years of Girls Camp, summer 2016 will be one for the
books! We can’t wait!
We have had many wonderful adventures
this winter as Staff Recruiters. Recruitment
and hiring of new staff members, camper
recruitment and creating “Winter in
the Pines” videos are just some of
the activities we take part in while at
Camp. We have also had opportunities
for professional development including
camping conferences and, along with the
program team, have had input on the design of staff training
and emergency procedures. All of the snow is starting to
melt, signaling that opening day isn’t that far away. We are
excited to build our community this summer and participate in
programs that make Manito-wish such a remarkable place for
both campers and staff. This summer Sara Post will be the Trips
Director and Ally Sheehan will serve as the Program Director.

FAMILY CAMP
A MANITO-WISH EXPERIENCE FOR ALL AGES!
Erik “Linus” & Hanna Brandt, Family Camp Directors
Family Camp is a true Summer Camp experience that allows all to grow closer to their family,
their friends and the great outdoors. Manito-wish Family Campers choose from activities
like sailing, crafts, swimming, biking, canoeing and kayaking, horseback riding and archery;
sleep in cabins; and enjoy great meals in Nash Lodge. The Manito-wish Family Camp staff
are excited about this coming summer….and we hope YOU will join us at Family Camp this
August! Reserve your spot now before the session fills up!

MANITO-WISH LEADERSHIP PROGRAM
Mark Zanoni, Leadership Program Outreach Director
This year our primary focus is on building connections and collaborations. We are doing this by
leveraging relationships with existing clients to make inroads with key educational organizations.
Over the last several months we have begun work on programs for Goodman Center (Madison,
WI), Farmington High School (Farmington, MN) and SQ Scholars (Highland Park, IL). All of these
connections began through existing relationships or alumni referrals. Another new client is St.
Monica’s Catholic School (Whitefish Bay, WI), and because of the unique nature of their specific
outcomes, we are starting work with the Marywood Franciscan Retreat Center on Trout Lake
(Arbor Vitae, WI). Marywood will assist us with reflection activities and add a service component
to the St. Monica’s program.
In November 2015 we were an exhibitor at the
Independent Schools Association of the Central
States (ISACS) Conference in St. Paul, MN.
Through our connections with existing clients
who are also members of ISACS, most notably
University School of Milwaukee (USM), we will
be collaborating with USM staff to present
a workshop for the 2016 ISACS conference.
USM has also invited us to present at the USM
SPARKS Educators Conference in June 2016.
These kinds of relationships have been very
helpful as we look to expand Manito-wish
connections beyond our existing network.
In March, Camp Manito-wish YMCA hosted the
3rd Annual Youth Leadership Summit (AYLS)
as a pre-conference prior to the Association
for Experiential Education Heartland Regional
Conference at Camp Pretty Lake near Kalamazoo, MI. This year’s theme was
“Fostering Resilience and Grit,” with keynote speaker Dr. Rich Rutschman from
the Chicago Teacher Center at Northeastern Illinois University. The AYLS is an
effort to bring educators from diverse backgrounds together to talk about best
practices, current research and new approaches, while generally expanding our
connections and experience. You can find more information on the Summit and
conference here: aee.org/heartland.
A new project now in its second year is Exploration-U. Exploration- U is a unique
educator’s institute that brings together a consortium of educators including
Manito-wish alum Carla Hacker and other partners. A principal partner, University
of WI-LaCrosse, will provide participating teachers (and others) the option of
graduate credit for the workshops, trips and classes the educator’s institute
will organize. This summer we will offer a Wyoming (Bighorn Mountains) trip
and a Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore trip. Go to exploration-u.org for more
information.
The Manito-wish Leadership Program uses experiential and adventure activities
to teach collaboration, personal and community awareness and social and
emotional skills to youth and adults. Our professional staff facilitates specific
activity sequences for groups that can include tools such as high and low
ropes course, wilderness skills and other unique games and activities. These
experiences are used as metaphors to transfer learning into other areas of life.

LOOKING FORWARD…..
Anne Derber, Chief Executive
As times change, the mission, values, philosophy and
essential spirit of Manito-wish remain the same. Those
same young men and women who once set out on trail are
now encouraging their own children and grandchildren to
join the legacy of friendship, stewardship and leadership
through their own Manito-wish experiences.
The old facility, in the center of Camp, will be removed
and its former site will be restored with native plants and
trees. In fall of 2016, through a generous gift from Dr. and
Mrs. James A. Groh, Norway cabin will be reconstructed
and enlarged to meet our cabin of excellence standards
and provide space for 10 campers and two staff.
Our board is passionate and engaged, both in our work
today and planning for our future, providing fiduciary,
strategic and generative guidance. These perspectives
guide us as we build to secure our future heading towards
the 75th anniversary of Girls Camp in 2016 and the 100th
anniversary of Camp Manito-wish YMCA in 2018.
As we prepare for our second century we are undertaking
several initiatives. We look forward to celebrating, over
Memorial Work Weekend, the dedication of our new
maintenance facility. Through the support of several
generous donors, we will have on the periphery of Camp a
facility able to support our current and future needs.
(Norway cabin)
We are also in the process of raising funds for a new, improved
Far North Washhouse and a new leadership cabin to support
our growth. These buildings, in addition to growing our
endowment, will help to lay our foundation for the future.
If you would like to learn more about these projects or
other opportunities to secure our future, please contact me
at [email protected] or call me direct at
(715) 385-2118.
Greetings!
Are you an educator in search of a professional
development opportunity in the outdoors? Exploration-U
is an educator’s institute based in Wisconsin that will
be running three adventure-based courses in the spring
and summer of 2016. We’re offering an outdoor living
skills course in the Madison area and backpacking trips
in the Bighorn Mountains in Wyoming and at Pictured
Rocks National Lakeshore in Michigan. No experience is
required and much of the gear will be provided.
We’re partnering with Camp Manito-wish YMCA to
implement a curriculum founded in experiential adventure
programming and designed to deepen participants’
6
understanding of social/emotional learning and group
process. Courses will be taught by educators with
master’s degrees in Education and extensive experience
leading groups in the backcountry.
Additionally, participants in our courses can earn
graduate credit through the University of WisconsinLaCrosse. Space is limited and registrations are accepted
on a first come, first serve basis, so to learn more and
reserve your spot, visit exploration-u.org.
Hope to see you out there!

families and groups who exhibit financial need. In 2015, 177 campers were able

FROM THE ARCHIVES:
Women who travel north are the found ones. They aim their canoes for The Star and paddle to a place
called Self. They visit islands named truth, respect, and inspiration. They wipe away rust, grime,
haze and fog, and find clarity between the waves. They find a function of life not previously there.
They find that life works, that they do run on a path. Life works for them because they work for life.
Fueled by adrenaline, sweat and determination, they move toward their goal like some wild bird seeking
its home in a whole new hemisphere. They move efficiently and instinctively.
Women who travel north are the lucky ones. They have definition and guidance. They wave good-bye,
turn their backs and go on to engineer their own city. They build structure but then take it down as
needed. They sing with the wind and let it carry them further or hold them aground. They walk on rocks
long since placed by history and never yet moved by man. They see with their eyes over distant miles
and know where their heart must take them. They live by a thing called muscle, and as they develop
this, so it develops them. They earn power and use this for their moving. They build a dynasty and
carry it on their shoulders. It goes with them, everywhere, and they have the right to name it.
Women who travel north are the rich ones. They own pride, resiliency and peace-of-mind. They buy
character in the morning, faith in the afternoon, and strength in the evening. They share a community
and together they manage it. They take their risks and pay their bills. They have invested in the
future. Their lives serve jointly as one, yet it is their independent nature that carries them forward.
They know one another, and through this they know their world.

2016 MANITO-WISH INFORMATION EVENT HOSTS
Thank you to these families for supporting Camp Manito-wish YMCA by opening their homes for friends, neighbors
and family to come and learn about Manito-wish programs. While it’s always helpful to get information on a place
or program you’re interested in, it’s even better to hear from people who have experienced it for themselves.
If you would like information about hosting an event in your area please contact Cindy Brill at (715) 385-2312 or
[email protected]. Thank you.
