PPS members have always been happy to return to Las Vegas and this year is no exception. We are on track to break all attendance records this year! During this year of celebrating the Section’s first 60 years, I am struck by how many themes and challenges remain unchanged. What started in 1956 as “The Self-Employed Section” (later changed to Private Practice Section in 1975) has throughout its history looked at business practices (contractual agreements between physical therapists and hospitals was piquing interest in the 1960s), legislative advocacy (including a grassroots effort in 1981 to respond to new salary equivalency guidelines published in the Federal Register), and practice management (computer-enhanced office operations was a hot topic in the 1990s). “The more things change, the more they stay the same” has never felt more appropriate. In 1997, the Section’s bylaws were reorganized to expand the Section’s purpose to include “promotion of free enterprise as a method of satisfying the physical therapy needs of the public.” It’s not a big leap from that to the Section’s current mission to “Champion the success of the physical therapist in business.” As we gather this week to learn together and have fun together, I hope you will join me in reflecting on the members who have come before us to build and sustain this great Section. As President of PPS, it is my honor to represent the 4,200 proud members of the Private Practice Section and to join my colleagues on the PPS Board of the Directors, the PPS Staff, and the more than 100 member volunteers who work on Committees, Task Forces, and in other supporting roles to champion your success. Here’s to the next 60 years! Warmest wishes, THE BUSINESS OF THE SECTION Wednesday, October 19 8:00 am – 1:00 pm PPS Board of Directors Meeting 5:15 pm – 8:00 pm Awards Ceremony, PPS 60th Anniversary Celebration, and President’s Reception Thursday, October 20 7:30 am – 10:30 am Breakfast with Keynote, General Business Meeting, and Candidates’ Speeches Saturday, October 22 8:00 am – 10:30 am Breakfast and Closing Keynote Sponsors Special Thanks to our 2016 PRIVATE PRACTICE SECTION ANNUAL CONFERENCE & EXHIBITION TERRY C. The way we communicate, navigate, shop, share, research…and now, it’s changing how consumers choose to get healthy. GeiaFit™ is harnessing the power of mobile technology to help physical therapists deliver top quality care the way patients expect. Conveniently. Affordably. Effectively. Patients will not choose multiple office visits after a long commute, or pay excessive copays on top of childcare costs. But they will choose practical solutions for feeling better and getting healthy. GeiaFit™ meets patient needs with a solution that helps build your practice. With goal tracking, personal exercise prescription videos and communication tools, GeiaFit ensures quality care while delivering value for you and your patients. Because we believe in doing more than simply surviving the tidal wave of consumer choice, we intend to thrive in it. And we can help you thrive too. GeiaFit is ready for the revolution. Are you? www.geiafit.com Sponsor Presentation Thursday, 1:30pm Hosted Breakfast & Lunch, Main Stage Exhibit Friday, 9am - 2pm Lafite Ballroom/PPS Exhibit Hall LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Dear Annual Conference Attendees, Welcome to Las Vegas for the Private Practice Section’s 2016 Annual Conference and Exhibition! Every year this event grows larger and more exciting, and this year is no exception. From the programming to the social events, we offer you a schedule packed with education and networking designed to reignite your passion for business and reconnect you with the friends and colleagues so many of you see year after year. To mark the Private Practice Section’s 60th year, your PPS staff began reviewing the archives of photos and videos collected throughout the years and called on you, our members, to share your memories. It would be difficult to overlook the value so many of you place on the relationships you have formed within the Section and especially at this event, given how many of you mentioned these relationships as among the most important benefits you have received. While you’re busy catching up with old friends this week, I want to challenge you to meet someone new. There are at least 50 new PPS members attending this week, and I hope you will join your staff and Board of Directors to make them feel welcome. I want to express a special thank you to the Annual Conference Program Work Group, under the leadership of Ed Ramsey, PT, DPT, who reviewed nearly 120 proposals to determine the educational content that you would find most useful and relevant to running a successful practice. In addition to the exceptional programming you’ve come to expect—like the Pre-Conference Workshop on Payment Updates for Private Practice, the Administrators Certificate Program (now in its fifth year and attracting more practice administrators than ever), and provocative and inspiring Keynote speakers—you will find even more sessions on payment and billing, succession planning, alternative business models and services, branding and marketing your practice, and creating a healthy corporate culture. I would also like to express my gratitude to the exhibitors, sponsors, and PPS Industry Partners who are with us this week. The financial support they provide the Section and this event in particular has allowed PPS to keep your conference registration fees and membership dues unchanged for many years. Finally, my deepest thanks are to you, the members of the Private Practice Section, for your continued support of PPS and its programs. Your staff and I are here all week and would love to speak with you about getting involved as a volunteer or help you get the most out of your PPS membership. Let us hear from you! Have a great week! It is with great pleasure that I welcome you all to Las Vegas for the Private Practice Section 2016 Annual Conference and I would like to thank the Wynn for having us back. Every year, Annual Conference is a time for reconnecting with both new and old friends and this year we have the added pleasure of celebrating the Private Practice Section’s 60th anniversary. As always, it is through the hard work of the Annual Conference Program Work Group, your PPS staff, and hundreds of volunteers (assisting on work groups, committees, presenting, and working behind the scenes) that we continue to raise the bar on the quality education and networking opportunities at this conference. We hope the keynotes we have selected will challenge you to change your paradigm or consider a few new strategies before 2016 wraps up. We are very fortunate to have Ann Rhoades presenting our opening keynote, “Creating an Enviable Culture that Outperforms the Competition,” followed Saturday morning by a lively debate between two political heavyweights, Mike Murphy and Paul Begala. I understand it’s Vegas and there are so many options stealing your attention but set the alarm clock and attend the morning sessions. Murphy and Begala will bring wisdom and insight into the possible direction healthcare may go depending on who wins in November. Whether it’s Hillary or The Donald, we have both sides covered. So thank you again for making this conference so successful, because without you and all the networking that happens during and outside the conference, the Section and the Program Work Group would not be going into 2017 so strong and confident about the future of private practice. Before you pack your bags to leave Las Vegas with stories that may live forever but stay in Vegas, mark your calendar and book your flights for our 2017 Annual Conference in Chicago, November 1-4. We look forward to seeing you there! How will a Supreme Court appointment by either party affect the future of the Affordable Care Act? Join Paul Begala (Political Analyst and Commentator for CNN) and Mike Murphy (Political Strategist, Political Analyst for NBC News, and Contributing Editor to TIME) as they share differing viewpoints on the current state of politics, the media, and the messages and proposals coming from both candidates. In Memoriam It is with a sense of great admiration that our PPS family acknowledges the passing of Charles Magistro, PT, DPT (hon), DrSci (hon), FAPTA, a passionate physical therapy leader whose contributions spanned education, research, policy, and community involvement, who passed away in April of this year at age 91. Charles was a PPS pioneer and leader without whom none of us would have the opportunities that exist today. We celebrate his life and thank his family for sharing this great man. www.ppsapta.org | Celebrating 60 Years | PPS Annual Conference 2016 IN APP TWEET! DICUS AWARD David Qualls, PT Owner Qualls & Co. The Private Practice Section's Board of Directors is very pleased to announce that the 2016 Robert G. Dicus Award winner is David Qualls, PT. For the last four decades, David has exemplified the highest level of servant leadership, in both his professional and personal communities. As a PT, he has been actively involved in advocacy of this profession at the state and national levels through his ongoing participation in both the Louisiana Physical Therapy Association and the APTA. David has served in various capacities with both organizations, including as president and chief delegate of the LPTA and as a member of the PPS Board of Directors. He has indeed mastered the art of balancing patient care while advocating and protecting our profession. Moreover, his role as a servant leader has extended beyond the bounds of our professional arena and into David’s own personal community. If you know David, you are aware that his community involvement lights up his face; it is simply an extension of all that he sees as his responsibility to give back from what he calls his treasure trove of experiences. He inspires others by his quiet demeanor, steadfast faith in his abilities and those of others, and a sense of humor that keeps everyone reminded that life is good. Indeed, David is the definition of a “Southern Gentleman.” Yet, he is also a sharp and cunning PT who has stood firm in representing both the profession and our patients. In light of his many years of humble leadership and his continued advocacy of our profession, it is an honor of this organization to bestow the 2016 Robert G. Dicus Award to David Qualls. JAYNE L. SNYDER PRACTICE AWARD Daniel Rootenberg, PT, DPT, CSCS President SPEAR Physical Therapy Centers of New York City The Private Practice Section's Board of Directors is very happy to announce Daniel Rootenberg, PT, DPT, CSCS, and SPEAR Physical Therapy Centers of New York City as the recipient of the 2016 Jayne L. Snyder Practice Award. SPEAR PT has made a uniquely positive impact on the profession of physical therapy. They have elevated the reputation and exposure of the private practice physical therapist on a state, regional, and national level. SPEAR was the first physical therapy private practice to ring the bell at the New York Stock Exchange when on May 4, 2016, during small business week, they were featured live on MSNBC. This nationally covered event put private PT practice in the spotlight. In addition to leadership, SPEAR PT also has a very intense clinical focus and is a leader in the field. In 2013, Columbia University presented SPEAR with the Leadership in Clinical Education award. SPEAR prides itself on their clinical mentoring program, as well as their monthly manual therapy workshops. These group sessions allow therapists to hone their clinical skills through a collaborative learning approach, with an emphasis on striving toward growth and clinical excellence. Every team member at SPEAR lives and breathes their SPEAR-IT values and strives to provide a personalized experience with clinical excellence and 5-star customer service. As a group, they have been able to impact the lives of over 10,000 New Yorkers this year across their 9 Manhattan locations. Since its founding in 1999 by Dan Rootenberg and David Endres, SPEAR Physical Therapy has become one of the faster growing outpatient physical therapy providers in New York City. Our collective congratulations to Dan and the entire team at Spear PT. www.ppsapta.org | Celebrating 60 Years | PPS Annual Conference 2016 29 SPECIAL PROGRAMMING 2016 PPS Award Winners FRIEND OF PRIVATE PRACTICE AWARD James C. Hall Owner and General Manager Rehab Management Services, LLC The PPS Board of Directors is pleased to honor Jim Hall of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, as the recipient of the section’s 2016 Friend of Private Practice Award. Jim truly exemplifies advocacy and support of private practice across this country. Though an accountant by trade, Jim has supported our collective mission and vision for years. Jim first started contributing to the PT community on a national level through frequent postings on PT Manager.com, a website that began in 1998 and continues to be considered a “go to” resource for private practitioners. Through this contribution he began to develop relationships with clinicians, business owners, and other experts in the national physical therapy private practice arena. Jim’s contributions include serving on the PPS payment policy committee from 2012 until present. He is also the payment policy committee liaison to the PPS administrator counsel. This past spring, Jim joined the Iowa delegation at the APTA Government Affairs Forum in Washington, D.C., advocating for our causes to members of Congress. Despite the fact that Jim is not a physical therapist, he passionately advocates for the profession as though he is. His dedication to our profession has been demonstrated time and time again by the countless hours spent working to improve our future as private practice business owners. If you know Jim, you also know that he does this not to advance himself or his business but rather he does this because of the passion that he has for our profession. On behalf of our profession, thank you for your contribution. PRIVATE PRACTICE SECTION SERVICE AWARD Jim Morgan Owner/President Let’s Meet, Inc. 30 The PPS Board of Directors is pleased to present the 2016 Board Service Award to Jim Morgan. This award was established by the PPS Board of Directors to honor an individual who has made extraordinary contributions above and beyond the duties of their position. Jim’s service to the section over the past 15 years as our conference planner and director exemplifies the intent of this award. As the Owner/President of Let’s Meet, Inc., Jim and his Let’s Meet family are a staple of the PPS Annual Conference and have provided the foresight and leadership to make the meeting not only the best meeting in physical therapy but one of the finest professional meetings in the country. Under Jim’s stewardship, attendance at the PPS annual conference has grown 225%. He has endured three different PPS presidents and worked with multiple program chairs, driving us to always provide the best possible product. What comes off as a polished final product is largely due to Jim’s tireless behind-the-scenes manipulations. Jim’s professional expertise is unequaled, but it is his humor, compassion, and love for the section that makes him extraordinary. Jim’s career has spanned many fields—none of which included being a physical therapist—but over the years the knowledge he has gained about issues that face the successful physical therapist in private practice that have been useful in his own entrepreneurial career. Having worked with PPS is one of his proudest engagements. Jim is grateful to have had the opportunity to work with the very talented and dedicated PPS members and staff whose commitment to the section has shaped PPS and who continue to strive to make PPS viable and set the standard for all physical therapists, especially those in private practice. The Private Practice Section is honored to have Jim as our friend and colleague. Rob Worth, PT, DPT, MS, OCS, MTC, ATC/L President/CEO Advanced Physical Therapy & Sports Medicine Transitioning your practice to the next generation, new owners, or a new company will likely be one of the largest events in the life of your practice. This transition requires a great deal of thought and planning into what type of successor is best for you and your practice. Determination of the long term goals for your practice is integral. Are you building an entity to sell, are you creating a legacy practice, do you desire ongoing employment or are you looking to retire? The questions are ongoing. This presentation will include a brief overview of succession planning for your practice with a panel of owners who will share 4 different succession plans that have been instituted in their practices. The 4 strategies that will be discussed include: 1) practice sale to a larger PT corporation 2) transition from a PT owned practice to an employee owned practice (ESOP) 3) an internal succession strategy transitioning ownership to current therapists in the practice and 4) sale of the practice to / investment from a venture capital firm. Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to: 1.Describe 4 different business succession plans for PT private practice. 2.Outline specific succession plan ideas to pursue in the attendee’s own practice. 3.Explain how different ownership transitions have affected the practices profiled. #T02 – HOW EVERYONE WINS WHEN CUSTOMERS CAN BUY EQUIPMENT FROM THE PRIVATE PRACTICE: A GREAT WAY TO IMPROVE THE BOTTOM LINE! CEU = 1.5 LaFleur Advanced Keith Glasser, MSPT, Cert MDT Owner Optimal Results Physical Therapy PT private practices are looking for cash based ways to improve the bottom line. Over 11 years of private practice I have developed an almost fool proof way to sell great products that patients need and want. In 2015 my clinic (3 therapists) sold $24,000 of products for cash at a profit of approximately 40-50%. I can teach this because I do it every day, day in and day out from ordering products, negotiating prices to having satisfied lifetime customers. We even rent out products they can use while in care and then at the end of care either return them or purchase the product. This system and a number of other systems used will be presented. Let’s face it PT’s: we are a service based business that requires that customers buy our ideas, products, services and PT care. Customers who choose our clinics need these products to resolve their physical dysfunction(s). These products can sometimes be integral tools that will allow the consumer to get the results they want with less visits which is what quality based care is all about. The products we sell we maintain inventories. Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to: 1. Compare products to determine which ones customers will buy. 2. Decide which products to sell and which ones to rent. 3. Design a focused collaborative program where everyone wins. #T03 – DEAR MEDICARE CAN I.....? CEU = 1.5 Margaux 1 Intermediate Robbie B. Leonard, PT, MS Chief Operating Officer Medical Billing Center Medicare is in a constant state of change and owners of physical therapy practices MUST keep up with the latest rules in order to be successful in this increasingly difficult regulatory environment. This course will be targeted towards the more complex Medicare rules and regulations specific to outpatient therapy and will specifically deal with the most commonly misunderstood issues. Questions such as, Can a Medicare patient be self-pay or direct access? How can I cover services when I’m on vacation? Can I take referrals from all types of physicians and dentists for Medicare patients? What needs to happen if I have referrals from two different physicians for the same patient? When can I bill a re-evaluation? What counts as covered maintenance therapy? These are only a few of the questions that will be answered. Misunderstanding the Medicare regulations can lead to a non-compliant practice which can have great financial and legal risks. Attend this course to insure that you are up to date on the most frequently misunderstood Medicare rules for outpatient therapy. Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to: 1.Describe the referral requirements for Medicare including who is allowed to refer patients and options when a referral is not available. 2.Describe the Medicare nuances related to plans of care, signature requirements, maintenance, required documents and Medicare Cap Exceptions documentation. 3.Describe Medicare Rules pertaining to the supervision, billing and documentation of PTA services, students and other staff services specific to practice type and strategies for managing in the PT's absence. 34 PPS Annual Conference 2016 | Celebrating 60 years | www.ppsapta.org #T04 – MEDICARE, PAYMENT, AND LEGISLATIVE COMPLEXITIES: UPDATES ON PPS STRATEGIES AND IMPACTS CEU = 1.5 Latour Intermediate Helene M. This session will also provide participants an opportunity to provide input to the Section’s Lobbyists, Connolly Strategies & Initiatives, in the form of suggested priorities and actions to include in the Section’s legislative priorities for the 115th Congress. Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to: 1.Describe the most recent payment updates for physical therapists participating in the Medicare program. 2.Describe the impact on other payers’ policies and recent updates on PPS legislative initiatives and potential goals. 3.Discuss the impact that this year’s Presidential and other Federal elections will have on PPS efforts and concerns. Durham, PT Principal San Francisco Sport and Spine Physical Therapy Richard Zhao Consultant Wells Fargo Insurance The expenditures for low back pain in healthcare cannot be controlled by the traditional clinical pathways. We as physical therapists are all aware of the Virginia Mason study of 2007, so why has the pathway not changed? Dr. Julie fritz has shown us in 2015 that still only approximately 3% of LBP patients are using Physical Therapist as their entry point into Healthcare. Well, the greatest incentive lies within the 3rd party payer to “flip the funnel” and use Physical Therapist as Primary Care Providers for LBP. So, what are we missing? This talk will present a model from the perspective of the 3rd party payer. Richard Zhao is an independent healthcare consultant and Healthcare Economist. Most importantly he worked with United Healthcare looking at LBP and its clinical pathways. Richard will present the model and the mindset that will make us successful as the entry point for all patients with LBP. This is about Physical Therapist as solutions to Healthcare! Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to: 1.Describe the funnel for current management of Musculoskeletal patients and understand why it is not sustainable. 2.Describe how physical therapist are the correct entry point for all low back pain patients from a 3rd party payer perspective. 3.Describe how your practice can play a role in being a solution for LBP patients, with you serving as their entry point. www.ppsapta.org | Celebrating 60 Years | PPS Annual Conference 2016 35 THURSDAY, OCTOBER 20 Administrators Certificate Program 10:45 am – 12:15 pm #A03 – ADMINISTRATORS CERTIFICATE PROGRAM – BUSINESS OPERATIONS (MODULE 3) (Module 3 of 6 for the Administrators Certificate Program Qualification) CEU = 1.5 Montrachet Beginner Stephanie Nard, BS BA Financial Director Brantwood Children’s Home Module of Practice Administrator’s Certification Curriculum. The current estimate for incident fracture is over 2 million per year, costing over $19 billion. Those with osteoporosis and low bone mineral density are at increased risk of traumatic and non-traumatic fractures. By 2025, annual fractures are predicted to increase about 50% with an expected cost of $25.3 billion. Physical therapists have the opportunity to assess for risk of osteoporosis and increased risk of falls and can carry out interventions to prevent bone loss, falls, and fractures. A three-tiered approach to incorporating osteoporosis programming into your practice will be presented; from bare bones to big business. You may want to: 1) simply highlight osteoporosis management in your practice; 2) have it be a focus for programming; or 3) build your practice with this as a key component. Tests, exercise prescriptions, equipment, personnel needs, and marketing strategies will be discussed. Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to: 1.Describe the incidence and pathophysiology of osteoporosis and low bone mineral density and the relationship between osteoporosis and risk of fracture. 2.Describe tests and measures to examine the person with osteoporosis and appropriate, evidence-based exercise interventions to enhance bone density and decrease fall risk. 3.Define equipment, space, personnel, and marketing needs to promote successful programming for patients/ clients with osteoporosis and low bone mineral density. #T07 – UTILIZING ICD-10 AND PAYER GUIDANCE TO DOCUMENT EFFECTIVE CLINICAL OUTCOMES CEU = 1.5 Margaux 1 Intermediate John Wallace, PT, MS, OCS (ret) CEO BMS Practice Solutions The use of EMRs has resulted in therapists delegating the communication about PT patient episodes of care to software developers’ understanding of documentation requirements and regulations. Therapists should think of their EMR and Outcomes tools as ways to improve their clinical practice through effective communication about the patient. Their goals and effective measurement of patient outcomes. This session will accomplish this through improving understanding of how to use ICD-10, ICF and various payer documentation policies along with the accountability of the documentation process to reflect on and improve practice. Therapists and administrators will learn that effective documentation rehabilitation and maintenance therapy does not rely of reams of impairment data but accurately reflecting patient goals of treatment and effectively measuring and communication progress. Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to: 1.List diagnostic codes that describe the pathology requiring treatment. 2.Describe how ICF can be a useful frame work to organize clinical thinking and effectively select outcome measures that elect this uniqueness 3.Identify the discipline of the patient care documentation process to improve patient care and clinical outcomes. #T08 – PHYSICAL THERAPY CLAIMS DATA: WHAT DOES A FIVE-YEAR VIEW TELL US? CEU = 1.5 Margaux 2 In February 2016, HPSO and CNA will publish the results of the new PT Claim Report entitled, “Physical Therapy Professional Liability Exposure: 2016 Claim Report Update.” The report is an analysis of CNA professional liability and licensing/regulatory board closed claims over a five-year period, and it the third report published. The Report Intermediate presents claim data pertaining to physical therapists, physical therapist assistants, and physical therapy private practices, as well as claim scenarios, and a self-assessment checklist designed to help physical therapists mitigate Stephanie Lynn Pierce, BSN, RN, CPHRM their risk. More than $42 million was paid in physical therapists’ malpractice claims over the past five years, an Risk Control increase compared with the 2011 report, in which $44 million was paid over a 10-year period. Physical therapist CAN Healthcare claim costs increased nearly 25 percent to an average paid indemnity in excess of $99,000. Allegations of improper management over the course of treatment nearly doubled from 2011 to 2015. (continued on next page) 40 PPS Annual Conference 2016 | Celebrating 60 years | www.ppsapta.org (continued from previous page) These allegations encompassed the highest overall percentage of closed claims in the Allegations of Improper Management category at 22.2 percent, with an average paid indemnity of $104,636. Average payment for physical therapist license protection claims has risen to $4,909, an increase of 29.6 percent from the 2011 report. Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to: 1.List the leading allegations made against PTs, PTAs, and PT Practices in malpractice lawsuits. 2.Define the average cost to defend and the indemnity for PTs, PTAs, and PT Practices in malpractice lawsuits. 3.Identify key risk management tools that PTs, PTAs, and PT Practices can incorporate into their practice. #T09 – CPT CODING & BILLING FOR THE PHYSICAL THERAPIST AND PHYSICAL THERAPIST ASSISTANT CEU = 1.5 Chambertin Intermediate Rick A. Gawenda, PT President Gawenda Seminars & Consulting, Inc. The myth that billers and billing companies do the billing is just that, a myth. Physical therapists (PTs) and physical therapist assistants (PTAs) do the billing daily by completing a billing log, charge sheet, etc. and submitting it to their billing staff or billing company for them to submit the charges. Some PT’s and PTAs do electronic documentation and as they complete their documentation, they are also completing their billing. Because of this, PTs and PTAs need to have a solid understanding of the CPT codes, the description of each CPT code and what interventions and training are included within each CPT code. PTs and PTAs also need to have an understanding of the definition of substantial of time-based CPT codes and how the number of units billed may be different with private insurance carriers than it is with Medicare. This session will thoroughly review the most common CPT codes used by PTs and PTAs as well as Medicare’s “8-minute rule” and definition of substantial for non-Medicare payers. Billing scenarios will be used to teach participants how to bill the correct CPT codes and number of units to not only Medicare, but also private insurance carriers. Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to: 1.Demonstrate the ability to bill the correct CPT code based on interventions provided, intent of service provided, and documentation in the medical record. 2.Define the difference between Medicare’s “8-minute rule” and definition of substantial of a time-based CPT code per the American Medical Association. 3.Demonstrate the ability to bill correctly to Medicare and private insurance carriers based on the interventions provided and the time spent on each intervention and modality. #T10 – UNDERSTANDING PATIENT ENGAGEMENT, SATISFACTION, AND LOYALTY METRICS TO IMPROVE CLIENT RETENTION AND GENERATE NEW BUSINESS CEU = 1.5 Latour Intermediate Benjamin F. Barron, MSPT Director of Business Development Collectivity/ProEx Physical Therapy Ryan Klepps, DPT COO Strive Labs, Inc. In outpatient physical therapy, optimizing the patients’ experience and engagement in the care delivery process has long been considered key in achieving strong clinical outcomes. This course will explore how the same concepts & metrics, when measured consistently and objectively, can be made actionable at the business level to drive strategic growth. Participants will uncover a process for understanding, collecting, and improving upon key patient experience metrics to consistently and repeatedly decrease patient dropout, increase therapist efficiency, and drive patient-generated referrals. Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to: 1.Explain the impact of early patient dropout (patient churn) on clinic revenue. 2.Describe the scoring breakdown for the Net Promoter Score & how to calculate your Net Promoter Score. 3.Identify 3-4 specific ways to use patient experience data to drive new revenue to your practice. Scott Hebert, DPT CEO Strive Labs, Inc. www.ppsapta.org | Celebrating 60 Years | PPS Annual Conference 2016 41 FRIDAY, OCTOBER 21 8:00 am – 9:00 am Moderated Networking #F01 – THE MAJOR KEY TO YOUR BETTER FUTURE IS YOU! CEU = 1 Latour 5 Intermediate Stephen V. Rapposelli, PT, OCS CEO Performance Physical Therapy and Fitness As a private practice owner, one is faced with challenges and threats to success. These challenges include the overall economy, the national and local government, local and global competitors, business associates, and even the unknown future. Many of these challenges and potential threats cannot be controlled, often leaving the private practice owner with a feeling of helplessness and hopelessness. However, there is one CRITICAL factor that CAN be controlled. That is YOU! The purpose of this session is to give the participant a practical, user friendly framework to begin (or refine) a system for continuous personal development. The participant will leave the session with at least 5 practical ideas and skills to implement by the next morning of the conference. Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to: 1.Describe how to design a morning ritual into an “hour of power” that will facilitate future success for you according to personal goals, and able to be reproduced daily. 2.Explain how to participate and reproduce a meditation session for use as needed at any time or place. 3.List personal goals for 2017, categorized in a unique way, to allow focused attention on achieving those goals. #F02 – HOW TO ENHANCE YOUR CLINICAL VALUE AND BRAND THROUGH BLOG WRITING CEU = 1 Margaux 2 Intermediate Alanna Pokorski, DPT Owner / Vice President Practice Wellness Resources / Practice Wellness Resources, LLC/ Sports PT of NY Managing a successful social media presence is a key component to branding a physical therapy company. With rapid healthcare changes, patients have more choices in their healthcare provider than ever before. Patients are now educated consumers and they research their injuries on the internet often times before seeking out a healthcare provider. An effective way to educate the community, improve website search engine optimization, and demonstrate the value of physical therapy is through blogs. The average person spends 15 minutes of every hour on social sites, which is an educational opportunity as physical therapists on blog platforms. Creating a blog calendar that is relevant to trending topics and addresses the needs of the community can add value to physical therapy clinics. A blog strategy should be deliberate with the intention of value added health care and company branding. Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to: 1.Outline a blog calendar for a physical therapy practice. 2.Identify trending topics to your community through blog writing. 3.Describe how to develop an effective, relevant blog to a specific audience. #F03 – BUSINESS MODEL 2020: THE FUTURE IS NOW CEU = 1 Chambertin Intermediate Christopher Herrera, DTP, CSCS, USAW CEO/Head Therapist Jaguar Therapeutics, LLC This session is directly related to physical therapy business management, more specifically how private practice models are created, operated, and grown. The traditional model of owning and operating a physical therapy clinic is out of date and negatively affects the ability for a therapist owned clinic to grow and be financially successful. I will be presenting alternate models along with an improved clinic concept that is the future of private practice. As therapists we must learn to control our segment of the healthcare market, while utilizing our direct access role to grow the business. With the very successful Vision 2020 initiatives being implemented, we are fast approaching the time where therapists will have the ability to own and operate true multidisciplinary clinics that provide every type of rehabilitation medicine. Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to: 1.Describe how to create and implement a multidisciplinary healthcare management structure within your own clinic. 2.Define a true multidisciplinary rehab clinic. 3.Describe how to create a health care model with a management structure allowing for direct access of patients and direct referral status to other medical providers. 42 PPS Annual Conference 2016 | Celebrating 60 years | www.ppsapta.org #F04 – ARE YOU AN ID-10-T? STRATEGIES FOR STREAMLINING YOUR PRACTICE WITH TECHNOLOGY CEU = 1 LaFleur Intermediate Ross M. Nakaji, PT, OCS, SCS, ATC, CSCS Owner, President Los Gatos Orthopedic Sports Therapy Ben Keeton, PT, DPT, OCS Director of Clinical Operations The Jackson Clinics, LP Erik P. Meira, PT, DPT, SCS, CSCS Clinic Director Black Diamond Physical Therapy With rapid advances it can be hard to keep up with technology, but in a physical therapy setting, where time is of the essence both in treatment time and in the desire to help a patient return to function as quickly as possible, technology can be a great asset. It’s important to stay current with trends as much as possible. When setting up a clinic or growing an existing practice, there is a lot of equipment to purchase. A great deal of expense goes into setting up the clinic before a patient even walks in the door. It can be easy to get attached to old modes of technology, not just because of a familiarity, but out of a “well, if it isn’t broken, why replace it” mentality. But the truth is, technological advances are out there to make treatment of our physical therapy patients faster and better in addition to communicating our vision to our staff. This session will outline new ways to integrate technology into your clinic, whether small, single clinic or multiple sites. Some examples are computers, tablets, smart phones, home exercise apps, cloud based software, EMRs, FOTO for outcomes and data and exercise equipment. Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to: 1.Define the ever-changing technology sector and how it influences and can enhance clinical practice. 2.Identify available software programs for outcome measurement, marketing, research, meetings, surveys, case management, staff education and quality of care. 3.Describe how technology can be used to provide more valid and reliable assessments when returning athletes to play. #F05 – EMPLOYEES, CONTRACTORS, TEMPS, OR INTERNS: WHAT’S IN A NAME AND WHY SHOULD I CARE? CEU = 1 Margaux 1 Intermediate Gregory Grant, JD Chair Employment & Labor Practice, Shulman Rogers A physical therapy practice must provide high quality services at user/insurance-friendly rates. Faced with staff turnover, patient/demand fluctuations, and constant budgetary pressures—owners and managers may consider an array of options to fill their staffing needs. Each decision to use independent contractors, temps or even interns, in lieu of full-time, part-time, seasonal or short-term employees, creates a myriad of hidden legal and business concerns. So we’ll review the legal guidelines and corresponding obligations regarding the classification of your staff—especially the threshold determination of whether to use employees (i.e., W-2’d) versus contractors (i.e., 1099’d). In addition, we’ll expose the new liability for businesses who played it safe by using “temps.” In short, every owner and manager will learn the best practices to employ when adding staff - regardless if they are anticipated for the long run, or just to fill-in because of any unforeseen need. You will not only learn how to properly classify these individuals, but, also, will why this matters: (i) for legal/compliance purposes; (ii) to determine proper compensation and benefits; and (iii) to fully-appreciate the pros and cons of what each classification offers a business. Finally, we’ll discuss why non-academic “interns” may soon be instinct. Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to: 1.Recognize the factors critical to your practices’ proper classification of both current and future staff. 2.Evaluate if the new staff member you seek to add should be an employee, independent contractor, or temp. 3.Describe how to develop your own “best practices” for proper worker classifications, the appropriate use of contractors or temps; and, complying with the strict limitations governing the use of interns. www.ppsapta.org | Celebrating 60 Years | PPS Annual Conference 2016 43 FRIDAY, OCTOBER 21 8:00 am – 9:00 am Moderated Networking #F06 – HARNESS THE POWER OF YOUR MILLENNIAL PT: FACILITATE AND INSPIRE PRACTICE INNOVATION CEU = 1 Latour 6 Intermediate Thomas Janicky, PT, DPT Doctor of Physical Therapy Johns Hopkins Hospital Stephanie Weyrauch, PT, DPT, MSCI Physical Therapist Rehab Authority Craig Johnson, PT, MBA Director of Clinical Integration - Therapy Partners Therapy Partners Becoming in tune with the strengths of your millennial PT and tapping into their true potential, can inspire innovative practice models, better communication methods with your consumers, and create a healthy environment with the tools for growth that your millennial PT craves! Scott Kulstad, MBA, Med, ATC Special Assistant to the Board of Directors Fairview Health Services Jody Ruppert Chief Executive Officer OSI Physical Therapy The health care marketing is dramatically changing. Consolidation, ACOs, narrow networks, outcomes expectations, risk sharing payment models, downward pressure on reimbursement, and regulatory requirements are some of the changes that challenge independent physical therapy owners. The fragmented physical therapy industry is starting to consolidate as well. Many large corporate therapy organizations now exist, and they are rapidly growing. In spite of a desire to maintain ownership of their businesses and preservation of their culture, many physical therapy practice owners feel the mounting pressure on how to maintain their independence with all of these market changes. This session will help private PT practices answer the question of “How can I be part of an ACO and keep my autonomy?” Although traditional ACO models have included acquisition of private practices, one PT MSO joined a like-valued Pioneer ACO. Independent practices purchasing services through the MSO were able to maintain their independence and benefit from the network opportunities afforded through the larger scale ACO. The ACO benefited from an expanded market without needing to build clinics or purchase practices. This win-win model focuses on Triple Aim, Value, Relationships, and Autonomy. Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to: 1.List 8 big health care changes that will impact independent physical therapy practices. 2.Describe how each can have an impact on long term strength of your practice. 3.Describe how alignment under the Triple Aim can lead to strategic opportunities with an ACO. #F11 – RESONANT LEADERSHIP AND EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE: CAN WE REALLY END DRAMA IN ORGANIZATIONS? The course will then outline an employee compensation methodology that will not only combat this phenomenon, but will put practices in a position to thrive. Finally, the course will conclude with a compensation plan that any administrator can implement immediately. Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to: 1.Recognize the rising cost of PT labor and how it relates to profitability. 2.Develop a specific compensation plan that will expand the efficiency of your staff. 3.Describe how to maximize staff development and retention within the constructs of this compensation plan. Cyndi Hill, PT, DPT Director of Operations Kinetic Physical Therapy #F17 – COMPREHENSIVE CARE JOINT REPLACEMENT MODEL: EARLY LESSONS CEU = 1.5 Latour Intermediate Heather Smith, PT, MPH Director, Quality American Physical Therapy Association Roshunda Drummond-Dye, JD Director, Regulatory Affairs American Physical Therapy Association 50 Over 1 million total hip and total knee procedures were performed in the United States in 2014, approximately half of which were covered under Medicare. Physical therapists (PTs) are integrally involved in the care of these patients, providing postoperative care services to the vast majority of them. The Comprehensive Care for Joint Replacement Model (CJR) is a new mandatory Medicare bundling model focused on patients with lower extremity joint replacements that began on April 1, 2016 and will be tested over a 5-year period. Under the CJR model, hospitals are at financial risk for the care provided during the initial hospital stay plus 90 days after discharge from the hospital. PTs who practice in the affected metropolitan areas and see these patient populations will continue to be paid under their normal payment structure, but should consider whether to enter into formal collaborator agreements with local hospitals. Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to: 1.Explain the new CJR model and the potential impact on PT practice. 2.Describe key factors that may influence the decision to become a collaborator in the CJR model. 3.Define the changes to practice operations you need to make for the CJR model. Steffes, PT, DPT President/Consultant Steffes & Associates Consulting Group Rachel Theil, DPT, OCS Private Practice PT & BrainyEx Coach PT Plus & Steffes & Associates Russel Certo, PT, OCS PT, Founder, President MOG National Lifestyle medicine is underutilized in a majority of physical therapy practice settings! Why limit ourselves to a vision as Primary Care Musculoskeletal Providers when we SHOULD be positioning our practices as Primary Care Lifestyle Medicine Providers? According to experts at the American College of Lifestyle Medicine (ACLM): “...recognition that the health care system desperately needs an overhaul—and treating the causes of chronic disease using Lifestyle Medicine (LM) approaches is a key foundation to that revamp. Growth in LM is being driven by a demand for something different by patients and providers, LM is an important tool for decreasing spiraling healthcare costs.” Science continually adds that Lifestyle Medicine is the best medicine. Trends are emerging in healthcare specialties including a Lifestyle Medicine program at Harvard University. Many of the top 10 chronic health conditions can be positively influenced by prescribed and supervised exercise and activity via physical therapy and our exercise colleagues. PTs are educated and positioned to provide lifestyle medicine to multiple clients. This presentation will identify the top conditions and trends in the United States and the role of the physical therapist in identifying and promoting wellness. Experience an example of lifestyle medicine in action! Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to: 1.List 5 chronic health conditions that impact the U.S. population and health care economy. 2.Outline emerging models of Lifestyle Medicine & key opportunities to engage & build a program for employers, referrers, their community & patients. 3.Identify an exercise with lifestyle medicine coaching session that could be applied in their own practices. #F19 – AUDITS AND INVESTIGATIONS: THE TRUE HOLLYWOOD STORY CEU = 1.5 Chambertin Intermediate Nancy Beckley, MA, MBA, CHC President Nancy Beckley & Associates LLC Wade A. Meyer PT, DPT, MJ, CHC Deputy Compliance Officer ATI Physical Therapy Exclusive to PPS members in Vegas: Insider’s secrets to the physical therapy audit and investigation landscape. Federal regulatory and investigative authorities know that any review of a physical therapy private practice will likely guarantee an error rate. Error rates under $10,000 are extrapolated to $1.4 - $3.1 million. Whistleblowers are reporting that double booking/dovetailing patients and practice bills Medicare for 1:1 therapy. Known overpayments are not refunded as required in 60 days, PTs pending credentialing “borrow” Medicare numbers from someone in the practice. Worse yet, the OIG has refused to accept CMS manual guidance in audits, despite affidavits from the therapy expert that wrote the CMS rules for delayed certification and POC requirements. Even if you survive and audit or investigation you do not go unscathed, the cost of defending your practice to the ALJ could bankrupt your practice, and worse, as a practice owner could lead to your exclusion from Medicare for actions of your staff in violation of one of the 5 healthcare laws on fraud and abuse. Get the “True Hollywood Story” and walk away with a risk assessment tool to profile your practice and mitigate compliance risk. Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to: 1.Describe the difference between and audit and investigation and how they are different from medical review. 2.Explain why OIG in not accepting CMS manual guidance on therapy documentation rules despite expert attestation from the drafter of CMS policy and input from APTA. 3.Define how to conduct a practice risk assessment based upon regulations and guidance used by the OIG, Department of Justice and other regulators. www.ppsapta.org | Celebrating 60 Years | PPS Annual Conference 2016 51 FRIDAY, OCTOBER 21 Administrators Certificate Program 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm #A06 – ADMINISTRATORS CERTIFICATE PROGRAM – BILLING & CODING (MODULE 6) (Module 6 of 6 for the Administrators Certificate Program Qualification) CEU = 3 Montrachet Beginner Rick A. During PPS Annual Conference 2014, a group of collegial friends, peers and competitors met to discuss current OSHA regulations and the changing landscape of onsite services we provide. In May 2015 our contingent of PPS members met with OSHA in Washington DC. The outcome of that meeting provided substantive changes to OSHA current regulatory interpretations, set the stage for future changes and a construct for ongoing dialog. From a business perspective, Physical Therapists are in a strategic position to impact the safety culture of an employer’s workforce but need a proper understanding of OSHA’s regulations pertaining to treatment and first-aid interventions. Key to this discussion is understanding what constitutes a Recordable Injury and what OSHA will/will not allow within compliance boundaries. This presentation will cast a “Bright Light” on the OSHA guidelines, define where the compliance boundaries lie and to how an organization can maintain compliance while still achieving a safe work environment for workers. We will review recent OSHA interpretation letters for services, along with consideration of more global approaches to onsite services. Finally, we will discuss our Letters for Interpretation (submitted and pending), strategies behind them and our collaborative effort with APTA. Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to: 1.Describe the integration of Early Intervention programs into their existing business portfolio and how such programs can assist client partners to reduce and manage Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSD’s). 2.Describe services and the type of functions that can and cannot be performed under the guise of Early Intervention / Employee Triage programs. 3.Describe how Early Intervention can be leveraged into a broader offering of services, which have the end goal of reducing and managing MSD’s and their associated costs. #F21 – PRACTICE OWNER 2.0: HOW I HAVE USED TECHNOLOGY TO CLONE MYSELF AND CREATE A WINNING CULTURE THROUGHOUT MY PRACTICE! Does the therapist understand someone’s D.O.S. or the components of building lifelong relationships? Therapist don’t know what the components are and are not taught it in school. Do they make eye contact? Do they use the clients name three times and smile? Do they give the client their undivided attention? Do you really know what the client values? John will share how physical therapists can use a platform of standardization and consistency in the outpatient arena and revolutionize the perception of their value -- and drive lifelong relationships with clients by focusing on what really matters to them and begin the branding of out-patient physical therapy. Value is the ratio of outcomes achieved to the costs of care. Central to determining value is systematic collection of patient-centered outcomes as part of routine care provided to all patients. A large number of patient-reported outcome measures Intermediate (PROMs) have been developed and are used by physical therapists, however scores across different PROMs are not comparable, which interferes with the ability to systematically measure value. Recent advances in measurement James J. Irrgang, PT PhD ATC FAPTA have led to the development new patient-reported outcome tools that can more efficiently and precisely measure Professor and Vice Chair of Clinical Outcomes outcome on a common scale through a wider range of function and disability than is possible with existing PROMs. Research, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Other issues related to use of PROMs to measure value that need to be considered are the strategies to seamlessly University of Pittsburgh collect PROMs as part of routine clinical care and the methods to analyze the PROM data to demonstrate quality and value of care. The purpose of this symposium is to provide attendees with knowledge and strategies that they Stephen Hunter, DPT, PT, OCS Rehabilitation Agency Administrator, Rehabilitation can use to implement collection and use of PROMs to assess the value of care provided by physical therapists. Martin, MPT, CSCS, CBI, M&AMI President Martin Healthcare Advisors Tom P. Carden, BS Senior Director of M&A Services Martin Healthcare Advisors Nancy Beckley, MA, MBA, CHC President Nancy Beckley & Associates LLC The rehabilitation industry has gone through more consolidation in the last 2 years than in the last 20 years. In 2015 there were approximately 40 transactions of privately held rehabilitation businesses across the United States, up from 23 in 2014, and up from 9 in 2013. Owners of rehabilitation businesses need to be educated on how to properly prepare their business for a potential partnership in the future, whether that is in 1 year, 3 years, or 10+ years. Our presenting team has been directly involved in over 200 rehabilitation transactions, and has seen deals blow up or owners having to accept significantly less for their businesses. The primary reasons for this is due to the lack of a solid business and management structure, compliance program, and operation systems. This program will walk business owners through the key steps of developing a strong business and management structure, a compliance program, and operations systems. We will show attendees in detail what specific issues within each of these areas have caused deals to expire. This program will prepare companies for a potential partnership in their future or simply a stronger operating business model if they choose to remain independent. Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to: 1.Describe how to develop a compliance program. 2.Describe how to develop a strong business and management structure. 3.Describe how to develop an Operations System. www.ppsapta.org | Celebrating 60 Years | PPS Annual Conference 2016 55 SATURDAY, OCTOBER 22 8:00 am – 10:30 am Breakfast and Closing Keynote #S01 – CLOSING KEYNOTE CEU = 1 Latour Intermediate Paul Begala Political Analyst and Commentator, CNN Mike Murphy Political Strategist, Political Analyst for NBC News and Contributing Editor, Time Just two weeks before the most contentious and unpredictable Presidential race in memory, all eyes are focused on Election Day and the consequences of American voters’ momentous decision.
