The History and the Present
Digital Cinema Research Institute (DCRI) is founded in 2006
as a department of University
From the beginning DCRI supports investigation in Digital
Cinema Domain provided in groups of teachers and students
working together
Peculiarity of our works is collaboration of representatives of
“creative” and “engineering” persons
In 2010 our groups put more attention to 3D content both at
technical and creative aspects
Our previous experience in Digital Cinema was found very
useful as we understand that 3D content may be created
only in digital domain

Creativity and Technology
CG & Design Department of the University is one of the
active promoter of 3D content creation
The background is artistic tradition of Soviet and Russian
animation supported by teachers
Stereo animation technologies in experimental use are
Mesh modeling
3D compositing
Clay stop motion

3D compositing of 2D CG graphic layers
Research of the potential stylistic alternatives to traditional mesh modeled
or stop motion stereo animation
Students are experimenting with compositing of “flat” graphic elements in
a 3D scene.

3D compositing of 2D drawn layers
When viewed in stereo version, the film is provided with a specific
“popper book” or “cardboard theatre” look
This effect allows an animator to experiment with alternative stylistic
solutions for his film

To make characters appear as having volume…
Camera circle them, flat layers rotate so as to remain parallel to the
camera’s film plane
Each layer contains frame
frame--by
by--frame animation of a rotating character
Illusion of a character having “volume” is quite persuading
It allows to retain the characteristic “hand
“hand--drawn” style of animation

as to doubt that tomorrow will ever come !“
