What is Squamish all about?
Squamish is located at the northern tip of a glacially etched fjord on the
Pacific Ocean, surrounded by a spectacular mountain backdrop and nestled
within a temperate rainforest. A strong, vibrant and healthy community,
Squamish is recognized as the Outdoor Recreation Capital of Canada because
of the wide range of recreational activities available here. World class trails,
rock climbing parks, consistent wind patterns, a relatively mild year-round
climate, a healthy wildlife population, and proximity to ocean, mountains and
rivers make Squamish a sought-after destination for mountain bikers, hikers,
rock climbers, kite and wind surfers, kayakers, ski tourers, wildlife viewers
and backcountry enthusiasts alike. Add to that a long list of organized
sport associations such as Nordic skiing, soccer, ice hockey, figure skating,
horseback riding, BMX, gymnastics, lacrosse and football, to name a few, and
Squamish is second-to-none when it comes to recreation and physical fitness.
But recreation isn’t the only thing residents are passionate about. A diverse
arts and culture scene is growing here as Squamish is home to many
photographers, filmmakers and artisans of every genre, and local theatre
groups, dance companies, musicians and singers entertain on a regular basis.
A dedicated and passionate environmental movement is also at work in
Squamish, striving to protect and enhance the fragile ecosystem that is at the
heart of what characterizes our beautiful surroundings. A committed group
of social organizations provides support through programming and services
with the goal to ensure that every resident of Squamish has somewhere to
turn in their time of need.
A breathtaking location, combined with a population of 17,500 highly
productive people, has resulted in a centre of activity that embraces
continual evolution and development. As more people strive for a healthy,
safe and affordable lifestyle, Squamish saw an almost 15% population
increase between 2006 and 2011. Squamish hosts a variety of annual events
such as the Squamish Valley Music Festival, Squamish Mountain Festival,
Squamish Days Loggers Sports, Test of Metal, the Brackendale Fall Fair, the
Farmer’s Market and the GranFondo cycling event, which runs through the
community. Squamish also boasts the largest gathering of bald eagles in
North America and hosts an annual eagle count each January that draws
international attention.

With world famous rock climbing, bouldering and the Stawamus Chief (one of the
largest Granite monoliths near an urban centre in the world), Squamish is considered
one of the best rock climbing destinations in Canada.
2014 is Squamish’s centennial birthday and the community is undertaking
improvements to the Downtown. With the recent acquisition of a large property on
the waterfront across the street from Junction Park, Council has endorsed a concept
of an ‘Outdoor Recreation Playground’ in the municipal park areas Downtown.
The ‘Playground’ concept will develop activities and attractions that celebrate the
community’s love of outdoor recreation and family activity by bringing pieces of our
fantastic recreational opportunities into the heart of Downtown.
The District of Squamish is seeking sponsorship for a new climbing boulder that is
intended to help bring the climbing experience to anyone who visits Downtown.
The proposed location of the boulder is in Junction Park, located near the heart of
Downtown Squamish. Junction Park features the O’Syiam Pavilion, washrooms, art in
the park and hosts many community events including the Squamish Mountain Festival.
The location provides breathtaking views of the Stawamus Chief that will inspire the
most seasoned climbers, visitors who have never climbed and even kids who want to
give climbing a try.
