Notes on the Program
by Tad Hendrickson
Music and dancing have been intertwined
since primordial man first banged on things
and danced around the fire. These days,
this partnership continues in any number of
ways, but none more elegant, dramatic,
and beautiful than in flamenco.
Of course, guitar, dancing, and singing combined is the signature of this intensely passionate music, and Andalusian Gitano
guitarist, Tomatito, is one of the best flamenco
has to offer. He and his sextet perform at
Rose Theater as part of the New York
Flamenco Festival with noted dancer Paloma
Fantova on a program that honors flamenco’s
150-year-old tradition, while embracing
fresh ideas and new collaborations.
Tomatito (born José Fernández Torres) was
born in the Spanish city of Almería in 1958 to
a family who has lived in the Andul neighborhood for generations. His grandfather,
Miguel Fernandez Cortes (El Tomate), was a
well-known local musician at the turn of the
20th century. His father (also called El
Tomate) and uncles also carried on the
family’s musical tradition. Suffice it to say,
Tomatito was immersed in music, specifically flamenco, since taking his first breath.
By age ten, Tomatito had gotten his first big
break, booked as an accompanist under
the name Pepin Fernandez at the Pena El
Taranto flamenco club. The protégé
expanded his technique and refined his
fiery falsetas (solo interludes) at that club,
playing with a parade of singers and
dancers who came there to perform. The
family relocated to Malaga, where the guitarist continued to grow and perform in the
clubs for (and then alongside) such heroes
as Paco de Lucía, who took the young guitarist under his wing.
Because of his ability to gracefully navigate
de Lucía’s demanding music, by the age of
15, Tomatito was hired spur-of-themoment by famed singer Camaron de la
Isla for a special program. This led to a landmark 18-year partnership that ended in
1992 with the death of de la Isla.
Since then, Tomatito has worked with a
variety of collaborators, most notably
Spanish folk singer Carlos Cano and the
mighty Enrique Morente, who was one of
the few flamenco singers willing to perform
alongside Tomatito early on, after the death
of de la Isla. Such was Tomatito’s reputation
in Spain that he was specially chosen to
share bills with Frank Sinatra and Elton
John.
There has also been an acclaimed series of
Tomatito solo albums, starting with 1987’s
Rosas del Amor, and, most recently,
2013’s Soy Flamenco, which garnered him
an impressive fifth Latin GRAMMY® Award.
An innovator who continually challenges
expectations of where flamenco can go,
Tomatito wrote a theatrical score for
Antonio Onetti’s Madre Caballo in 1997 and
was a part of the award-winning soundtrack for the movie Vengo in 2000. He
recorded two albums with acclaimed jazz
pianist Michel Camilo in the 2000s and
dueted with George Benson on 2003’s
Passeo de los Castanos. He has worked
with such varied musicians as iconic
Turkish baglama player Arif Sag, tango guitarist Carles Trepat, and bachata
singer/songwriter Romeo Santos, as well
as new flamenco talent from his hometown of Almería.
While New York City is fortunate enough to
see more than its fair share of flamenco
music each year, one of the greatest guitarists of his generation and his group
promise to make this night a special one.

Meet the Artists
Tomatito
José Fernández Torres, known as Tomatito
(Guitar ), is best known as the guitarist who
accompanied Camarón de la Isla for the last
18 years of the great singer’s life, collaborating
with him on the seminal album La Leyenda
del Tiempo (The Legend of Time), and
many other essential flamenco recordings.
Since Camarón’s tragic death in 1992,
Tomatito has ensured the evolution of flamenco guitar, as well as securing his own
place as a leading flamenco guitarist of his
generation and of all time. He has recorded
six solo albums, winning a Latin GRAMMY®
Award for his 2004 album Aguadulce. In
addition to his renown as a concert flamenco
guitarist who has performed at international
venues from the Palais de Beaux Arts in
Brussels to London’s Royal Albert Hall, he
has continued to cross new frontiers in an
ongoing collaboration with Latin jazz pianist
Michel Camilo. Tomatito and Camilo’s 2000
GRAMMY® Award–winning album Spain
was followed by Spain Again (2006).
Tomatito was born in Almería in 1958 into a
family of great flamenco guitarists, including his father, Tomate, and uncle, Niño
Miguel. The family moved to Málaga when
Tomatito was 12, and there he began his
musical career, performing in flamenco
clubs such as the Taberna Gitana, where he
met Paco de Lucía among his audience,
and Camarón de la Isla.
Tomatito has performed with many other
great cantaores, including Enrique Morente,
La Susi, Vicente Soto, and José Menese.
His collaborations outside of the flamenco
world include performances with Elton
John and Frank Sinatra, John McLaughlin,
Irakere, and Chick Corea. He has written
film and theater scores and appeared in the
movie The Devil’s Advocate with Al Pacino.
In 2007 he paid homage to Camarón at
Malaga’s flamenco biennial, with a performance he called Camaroneando. Since
then, he has continued to tour the top
venues of the globe with his Sextet.
Tomatito’s major successes have made him
the mature, elegant guitarist that now brings
us Soy Flamenco, his latest recording. “Soy
Flamenco” defines the ultimate flamenco fan:
a person who pours his or her heart and soul
into promoting flamenco day after day. This
latest production features collaborations from
two exceptional guitarists; the late Paco de
Lucía joins him on “Corre por mis venas,” and
his good friend José Monge on “Camarón
de la Isla,” who discovered him years ago,
performs a flawless seguiriya on “El
Regalo.” Bulerías, Soleas, Tangos, Rondeñas,
Seguiriyas, and Rumbas are featured on the
CD’s ten tracks, all about flamenco guitars.

Dave Brubeck: Jazz Ambassador
Part of Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dave Brubeck Festival
On View Now – June 2014
Free and open to the public during scheduled performances
As part of Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dave Brubeck Festival, our current exhibit, Dave Brubeck:
Jazz Ambassador, documents the life and work of one of America’s most significant
musicians to emerge after the Swing Era. A pianist, bandleader, and composer, Californiaborn Brubeck (1920–2012) grew new audiences—particularly on college campuses
nationwide—with a sophisticated, swinging style. In 1958, a far-ranging U.S. Department of
State tour to countries in Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Southern Asia gave Brubeck
the opportunity to serve as a cultural ambassador. A socially engaged artist, Brubeck
consistently fought for racial integration and equality at home and abroad. Our exhibit, found
on the fifth floor of Frederick P. Rose Hall, features historical photographs, scores,
ephemera—including concert programs and correspondence—and videos. Please stop by,
learn more about one of the legends of jazz, and enjoy!

THE APPEL ROOM
Beyond Jobim: New Voices of Brazil
March 21–22 at 7pm & 9:30pm
Lead vocalists Luísa Maita and Clarice Assad present
their personal refractions of the various streams of
Brazilian musical expression. Named for the protagonist
of Tom Jobim’s iconic “Ana Luísa” and thoroughly
rooted in the Great Brazilian Songbook, Maita offers a
21st-century take on the tropes of samba and bossa
nova, and was recognized as Best New Artist at the
22nd annual Brazilian Music Awards. A visionary composer and virtuoso pianist who draws on Heitor VillaLobos and Hermeto Pascoal in equal measure, and an
overall practitioner of vocalese, Assad is as comfortable performing with a symphony orchestra as with
her ancient-to-future unit Off The Cliff, which, as she
puts it, “uses different combinations of instruments
from song to song so that it never sounds the same.”
musician, Dave Brubeck (1920–2012) studied with
the composer Darius Milhaud; served his country in
World War II; recorded nearly 100 albums as a leader,
including the two-million-selling record Time Out; and
wrote several hundred songs for a series of quartets.
Brubeck spread jazz’s message around the world
from the mid-1950s until not long before his death.
He experimented with unorthodox time signatures,
polytonality, and extended formats (composing
operas, oratorios, chorales, ballets, sacred music, and
suites) in a manner that bespoke continued artistic
growth, and performed frequently as a solo pianist,
showcasing his individualistic style. In 2000 Brubeck
founded the Brubeck Institute at the University of the
Pacific, his alma mater, to which he devoted much
loving care, and which now carries on his legacy as an
artist committed to impacting society through the arts
and catalyzing social change. The Jazz at Lincoln
Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis explores
Brubeck’s legacy with fresh arrangements that illuminate the maestro’s breadth and scope.

Hugh Masekela: Celebrating 75 Years
April 4-5 at 8pm
To celebrate his 75th birthday on April 4, the legendary South African trumpeter, flugelhornist, composer, and lyricist Hugh Masekela presents a
retrospective extravaganza. Joined by associates
from various stages of his career, he explores his
fascination with American jazz and his deep roots in
the Zulu folkloric strains that coalesced into the
mbaqanga township dance band music of his homeland, from which he was exiled between 1960 and
1990. As is Masekela’s custom, personal considerations will operate in the context of his ongoing quest
to document, as he puts it, “the amazing diversity
and unfathomable excellence of the African diaspora’s cultural heritage.”
Free pre-concert discussion nightly, 7pm.

April 11-12 at 7pm & 9:30pm
Towards the end of the 1950s, pianist-composer
Dave Brubeck and his wife Iola, in collaboration with
Louis Armstrong, drew on their experiences spreading American culture and music around the world at
the behest of the U.S. Department of State to create
a jazz musical titled The Real Ambassadors.
Brubeck’s and Armstrong’s groups coalesced to
record the soundtrack in 1961, and to perform at the
1962 Monterey Jazz Festival, their only performance.
Pianist Peter Martin leads a restaging of this still-topical masterwork, which addressed the civil rights
movement and includes Iola Brubeck’s classic lyrics
“They Say I Look Like God! Could God be black? My
God!” Also performing are music director and pianist
Peter Martin, bassist Robert Hurst, drummer Ulysses
Owens, vocalists Roberta Gambarini, Brian Owens,
Vivian Sessoms, Russell Graham, and Ty Stephens,
trumpeter James Zollar, and original member of the
1962 performance Yolande Bavan as narrator. This
will be the first ever New York performance of this
important work.
