Self Aligning Packing Gland, Bolt Type. 4b.If boat is fitted with a rigid type packing -gland with a threaded tube section, a packing nut, and a locking nut; a Stern Tube Adaptor (female thread at one extremity and hose barbs at the other) should be installed. Stern Tube Adaptors are available from LEMANIA COMPANY in a variety of pipe sizes. Consult us for your specific application. An alternate method if an adaptor is not available for your application is to coat the threads with a marine type sealant such as G.E. 5200 and let set before fitting of Bellow/Friction Ring Assembly. This will provide a smooth surface on which to install the Bellow/Friction Ring Assembly. First remove the packing nut, the locking nut and the packing (flax). *Go to step #6 at this point.* Rigid Type Packing Gland. Stern Tube Adaptor. • 4c.If boat is equipped with a rigid, bolt type, packing gland with 2 studs and a flanged piece that compresses the packing when it is tightened down over the studs; this flanged piece should be removed and then reinstalled in the following manner: *Proceed with step #6 of the instructions at this time, then return to #4c.* First, remove the flanged piece and all packing material. Next, coat the outside flat surface of the flanged piece with a marine type sealant. Now reinstall the flanged piece in the opposite direction from its original position (protruding cuff no longer inside of packing gland housing but on the contrary facing out). This should now provide a suitable section of pipe on which to clamp the Bellow/Friction Ring Assembly. *Skip ahead to #7 at this point.* Rigid, Bolt Type, Packing Gland. • P.O. Box 22491, Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33335-2491, (305) 584 6907 VICP 02/21/89 3. 5. Calculate misalignement between stern tube and shaft using the following procedure: Measure distance between shaft and top of stern tube, then measure distance between shaft and bottom of stern tube. The difference between these two measurements is the amount of vertical misalignement. Repeat this procedure for horizontal misalignement, measuring between shaft and left and right (port & starboard) sides of stern tube. If either the vertical or horizontal misalignement exceeds 3/16" (.1875"), then you must fit a Stern Tube Alignement Kit, available from LEMANIA COMPANY, before installing the LASDROP Shaft Seal as this excessive amount of misalignement would prevent the seal faces from seating properly and would cause the unit to leak. • WARNING: INSTALLATION OF SHAFT SEAL WITHOUT AN ALIGNMENT KIT ON A STERN TUBE MORE THAN 3/16" OUT OF ALIGNMENT, AS DETERMINED BY ABOVE PROCEDURE, WILL VOID THE WARRANTY. 6. Uncouple shaft from transmission. Disassemble and remove coupling from shaft Slide shaft away sufficiently to allow for removal of existing seal parts and installation of Bellow/Friction Ring Assembly and Shaft Ring Assembly. 7. Polish shaft with fine emery cloth to ease installation of Shaft Ring Assembly. Do not omit to polish section of shaft which has been pushed back into the stern tube. 8. CAUTION: Do not use any tools to handle either Friction Ring or Shaft Ring Assembly as the polished surfaces of these parts are very easily damaged. • Install Neoprene or Reinforced Hose Insert in stern tube end of Bellow if needed to act as a spacer between the Bellow and the tube. 10.Slide Bellow/Friction Ring Assembly over the shaft. Slip Bellow over stern tube being careful not to install it beyond clamping location. Adjust Bellow on stern tube if needed to make Friction Ring seal face PERPENDICULAR TO SHAFT. Hose Barb Fitting should be pointed straight up or at a maximum angle of 45 degrees from the top. Tighten Hose Clamps. 11.Make sure Hose Clamps securing Friction Ring to the Bellow are tight but DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN them as this might distort the Friction Ring and could prevent the seal faces from sealing properly. 12.Install 0-Ring, Compression Screws and Clamp Srew in Shaft Ring Assembly if they are not already in place. Coat 0-Ring in Shaft Ring Assembly and shaft with a light film of oil to facilitate installation of Shaft Ring Assembly. Slide Shaft Ring Assembly over the shaft, with Seal Ring (polished surface, no screws) facing the Bellow/Friction Ring Assembly, until it is just touching the Friction Ring. Trace a mark on the shaft at the end of the Shaft Ring Assembly (a pencil or fine felt tip marker works best for this). Slide Shaft Ring Assembly toward the Bellow/Friction Ring Assembly, compressing the Bellow, until the end of the Shaft Ring Assembly is 1/4" to 3/8" (.250" to .375") from the mark on the shaft. Tighten the Clamp Screw until the Shaft Ring Assembly can no longer be moved on the shaft. This should be approximately 1/2 turn past tight and should leave a small gap between the two sections of the clamp ring (this gap should be wide enough to slide a sheet of paper in). Tighten the compression screws. 411 13.Slide the Protective Cover over the Shaft Ring Assembly and press it on to the small recess on the end of the Friction Ring. 10131 N.W. 46th Street, Sunrise, Florida 33351, (305) 742 3873 VICP 02/21/89, 4. WARNING: DO NOT COMPRESS BELLOW MORE THAN 3/8" (.375") as this will cause accelerated wear of friction surfaces and could lead to seal failure. COMPRESSING BELLOW/FRICTION RING ASSEMBLY MORE THAN 3/8" AS DESCRIBED ABOVE WILL VOID THE WARRANTY. • 14.If the vessel on which this seal is being installed has a maximum hull speed under 12 knots (Displacement Hull), follow the procedure described in step # 15: Vent Line Installation. If the vessel on which this seal is being installed has a maximum hull speed over 12 knots (Planing Hull), follow the procedure described in step # 16: Water Injection Installation. 15.Vent Line Installation: The purpose of the Vent Line Intallation is to prevent the formation of potentially' damaging air pockets inside the shaft seal. Such air pockets could lead to seal failure if the seal faces are allowed to run without the benefit of water cooling and lubrication. The Vent Line will allow any air that finds its way into the shaft seal during manoeuvers or haulout to be immediately vented out. Using one of the Mini Clamps provided, connect the 1/4" I.D. Reinforced Water Hose to the Hose Barb Fitting on the Friction Ring. Be sure to fully slide the Hose over the Hose Barb Fitting, this will prevent the Hose from accidentally working loose during operation. Note: A soapy water solution can be helpful in sliding the Hose over the hose barbs. The Hose can then be routed to a safe and secure position WELL ABOVE THE HIGHEST POSSIBLE WATERLINE LEVEL. The Hose should be well secured with the Cable Ties supplied with the kit, and/or with cable clamps or any other type of fitting that will support and maintain the Hose in the desired location without crimping or otherwise restricting the opening of the Hose. • WARNING: If the Hose is not well secured and the open end should drop to a point below the waterline, this would cause a serious leak which if left unattended could present a problem to the flotation of the vessel. The open end of the Hose should be well protected so as not to allow any foreign matter (dirt or other) to plug the opening. This can best be achieved by shaping the open end of the Hose into a gooseneck with the opening facing down. 16.Water Injection Installation: The purpose of the Water Injection Intallation is to provide a source of supplementary water lubrication to the seal faces. This can be required should the water present in the shaft log and Bellow during normal operation drain out or be vacuumed out when the hull reaches a planing condition. 10131 N.W. 46th Street, Sunrise, Florida 33351, (305) 742 3873 • VICP 02/21/89 5. The Hose should then be connected to the raw water cooling discharge of the engine. This connection can be made at one of the clean out plugs on le,Nthe raw water jacket of the exhaust manifold. Use one of the Bronze 1/4.IReducing Bushings provided and one of the Heat Stabilized Nylon Hose Barb Fittings to make the connection. If you should need a different size Reducing Bushing contact LEMANIA COMPANY for a direct exchange. Be sure to securely clamp the Hose onto the Hose Barb Fitting using the second Mini Clamp provided. An Alternate method of connecting the Water Injection Hose is through a "T" fitting installed in the hose located between the raw water dicharge of the engine and the muffler (goose neck). "T" Fittings for different hose sizes are available directly from LEMANIA COMPANY. Be sure to leave enough slack in the Water Injection Hose at the Friction Ring connection to allow for movement of the Bellow/Friction Ring Assembly. 17.The LASDROP Shaft Seal may drip during the first few hours of operation until both friction parts have mated to one another. 18.REPLACEMENT PARTS: Order directly from LEMANIA COMPANY. A complete inventory of parts is maintained for Immediate Delivery. 19.IMPORTANT: The LASDROP Shaft Seal must be located in a protected and isolated condition. No foreign objects can interfere with its movement. If your LASDROP is not protected and isolated, consider some kind of shrouding. This will also serve to protect anyone from coming into contact with the moving parts of the shaft seal during operation. WORK ON OR AROUND THE LASDROP SHAFT SEAL WHEN THE SHAFT IS 4/1 WARNING:NEVER ROTATING. You could be seriously injured if you come into contact with the moving parts of the shaft seal, or if an item of your clothing should become entangled on these moving parts when the shaft is rotating! 10131 N.W. 46th Street, Sunrise, Florida 33351, (305) 742 3873 VICP 02/21/89 6. ADDENDUM TO 02/21/89 VICP INSTRUCTIONS FOR A & B MODEL LASDROPS ONLY This addendum is intended for LASDROP Installations on boats powered by small, flexibly mounted, diesel engines. ie: Yanmar, Volvo, BMW, etc... Or on boats where the driveline set up is such that the driveshaft is allowed to move axially (fore & aft) in excess of 1/16" and/or radially (side to side, runout, shaft whip, etc...) in excess of 0.010" (10/1000"). ie: Aqua Drive or Scatra instalations, shafts with 3' or more unsuported, etc... On any Installation as described above or in any case where the drive shaft might be subjected to noticeable vibration or movement, the distance that the bellow should be compressed, as outlined in step #12 & #14 of the Installation Instructions, will need to be increased in proportion to the severity of the shaft movement or vibration. In most cases where such an adjustment needs to be made, it is recommended to start with 3/8" to 1/2" compression and increase this value in 1/8" increments as needed. In no case, however, should the amount of bellow compression exceed the values as listed in the table below! LASDROP PART # Maximum Shaft R.P.M.
