The Sum of a Summer
Approaching the mellow weeks of summer,
whether conscious or not, we all make a choice
concerning the investment of our time. Most of
us are programmed to choose “slackening of
pace” as normative for the ensuing months,
until Labor Day announces the end of the
surrealism that summer tends to become. Any
optional choice must be made against the grain
of established habit. That choice?
To choose growth.
In the natural order of things - crops,
trees, flowers - everything grows dramatically
during summer time. Notably absent from the
process is heavy demand - it’s simply the
creative order of development. In other words,
God’s program of summer-time growth isn’t
sweaty, it just happens. Beautifully. Abundantly.
But only when things are in alignment with His
order.
Flowers, for example must be in the
right environment to receive water and nutrients.
Too much shade, not enough water, neglect of
weeding - these factors must be guarded
against and then growth is natural, easy, and
beautiful.
In the spiritual order of things, I
believe it’s much the same. I don’t believe God
wants our summer to be less than fulfilling and
refreshing in its variety of experiences. But I do
believe He wants us all to grow up and go
forward, not accepting the slothful mode of
passive, slack-to-duty attitude a usual
summertime mentality can engender.
We’ve all heard and hummed
Gershwin’s “Summertime”: Summertime ... and
the livin’ is easy. The laid-back, lackadaisical
drawl of the song’s lyric and music form slides
you down in your hammock, plunks a lemonade
in your hand, and hypnotizes you. It seems to
induce a semi-comatose state, oozing the
syrupy indifference and lamely grinning from a
face dewy with humidity.
Wake up, saints! I don’t want to take
away summer’s fun, festivity, or recreation, but I
do want to issue a call against spiritual
drowsiness. Let’s move ahead in Christ with
three full months of living, as opposed to 90+
days of resignation to passivity.
Start TODAY. Pointedly pursue a
productive season. Can’t think of how to get
started? Here are a few suggestions:
1. Pick out at least two books to read.
I’ve selected five already, which span
the distance from Bible doctrine and current
theological issues to a biography of one of
history’s greatest political leaders. Plan on
growing through reading.
2. Share your life in a special way.
Plan on and pray toward at least one
distinct occasion where you will invite a person
you know who is not yet a believer to a
pleasant, enjoyable occasion of recreation or
dining. A picnic, round of golf, a trip to the lake,
a barbecue on your patio . . . the list goes on.
Don’t try to “blow ‘em away with hot gospel.”
Simply show friendship, and let the life and love
of Jesus Christ be manifest in your home, your
demeanor, and, to whatever degree the door
opens, with your words.
3. Make a fresh commitment to “the basics.”
Pray, read, and memorize: Get the
growth basics down pat, and don’t let up even
when you’re on vacation.
4. See the Holy Spirit’s plan for your
summer.
He has one, you know. Look for the
thread of His plan for you through the maze of
sunny days. With the growth, He has something
glorious as well; something specifically custommade for you and your personal fruitfulness. I’m
praying you’ll discover that “something” as we
begin in May and move through the summer
months.
By means of the Spirit’s leading, I
believe we can all come to the end of the
season and say,
“The sum of my
summer was
growth.”
