Abe’s Amble International Visitors
ive Runners from Ashikaga,
Japan took
may take the prize for
“Longest Distance Traveled to
Participate” in Abe’s Amble on August
18th. Ashikaga has been a Springfield
Japanese Sister City since 1990. SRRC
member and Sister Cities Association
of Springfield (SCAS) Board Member,
Cindy Cannamela has
confirmed
arranged
for the
registration of Ashikaga runners,
Iwasa, Shimuzu, Yoshida, Nakajima
and Tabei for the 10k race. Cindy said
the registrations are a result of ground
work laid during a planning visit to
Ashikaga last fall.
SCAS was one of seven Sister Cities
associations in the United States to
receive exchange funding from Sister
Cities International (SCI) to extend
the scope of their partnerships. The
Leading Asia exchange funding
Project Coordinator is Carol Zerkle,
also a SCAS Board Member. Through
Leading Asia SCAS identified common
interests of citizens in Springfield
and Ashikaga, and addressed those
not being served. One major area
of interest was a healthy lifestyle,
including fitness routines. As a runner,
Cindy was the fitness representative on
SRRC - FootTrails - Page 4
the Leading Asia delegation that visited
Ashikaga last October. Not only did
she experience the sights and sounds of
Japanese culture, she also had a hands
on tutorial on the Japanese approach to
fitness as part of a healthy lifestyle.
Photos from Cindy Cannamela’s trip to Ashikaga, Japan
Now SCAS is proud to offer SRRC
members the opportunity to explore the
healthy Japanese lifestyle by traveling
to Ashikaga to participate in a 5k/10k
run on November 3, 2013. In addition
to participating in the run, delegation
members would tour historic and
cultural sites in the Ashikaga area meet
local officials, and attend a local festival.
Members may decide to immerse
themselves in the Japanese culture by
choosing a homestay with an Ashikaga
family. Of course, shopping is a national
pastime in Japan, so members will have
ample opportunity to shop.
If you are interested in becoming a
member of our running delegation to
Ashikaga this fall, please contact Cindy
Cannamela, at [email protected]. We
hope to see you at Abe’s Amble with
Iwasa, Shimuzu, Yoshida, Nakajima,
and Tabei.

T
he running season is in full swing
and it’s been yet another year for
weather. What started off as a very
wet and rainy Spring has now turned in
to what seems like an extended Spring or
Fall. I kept waiting for the hot and humid
weather and aside from about a week in
there we have been pretty lucky.
Abe’s Army has had almost perfect weather
this year and everyone has been doing a
great job with their training. It’s hard to
miss all those runners and walkers out
there with their bright shirts on!! Good
luck to everyone that has been training
for Abe’s, you will all do awesome in the
race! Also, a big thank you to the leaders
and volunteers that make up Abe’s Army,
without you we couldn’t put together such
a great program to motivate and encourage

THE ASSAULT - DAY 4 Thursday,

The Running Mission
I
by Mark Hopping
turned 55 in June and I have really been
just plodding along the past year or so
since I ran a 3:16 at St. Louis Rock n Roll
Marathon in October, 2011. I have been FLAT
mentally and physically. January thru June of
this year I averaged 34 miles a week. Plus, lately
I have watched how many runners complicate
this sport and, quite frankly, take the fun out
of it. The first week of July I ran only 13 miles
because of my California trip and only 36
the next week. THEN, I got this brainstorm
of “hey, I am gonna run 100 miles in a week
before I go back to school”!!!! I chronicled
each day and some of my running buddies
are part of the ‘team’ now showing up to run
when they can. I have done 13 marathons in
the past, but I never ran over 75 in a week
ever. I was successful on low mileage. BUT
THIS LITTLE PROJECT has woken me up
to how much running means in my life AND
not racing OR going fast, just running and the
thoughts and beauty that come from doing
just that. For some reason, I decided to do it all
on a track, be it the high school or Blackburn
College and a large percent has been on the
old cinders at BLACKBURN COLLEGE.
I HAVE BROKEN A LOT OF RUNNING
GUIDELINES BY GOING FROM JUST
AVERAGING 34 a WEEK TO 100, but that is
part of the fun!
THE ASSAULT IS UNDERWAY -DAY 1
Monday, July 29th, 2013. 8 miles completed
Monday morning.....71:35 (8:57 ave) ------92 to go! 8 miles completed Monday
afternoon....71:18 (8:55 ave)-------84 to go!
Good evening fellow fellows. I wanted to tell
you “THE ASSAULT ON 100 MILES IN ONE
WEEK” is in full swing. Today, I started off
with a 1 mile walk with my dogs, then ran/
walked 1 mile with a 5th grader that I run with
3 days a week. AND THEN, 8 miles were put
in the bank at the old cinder Blackburn track.
It went well, although my legs are NOT ready
to attack this goal since there is literally no
recovery from the 132 miles run the past 2
weeks. In fact, since I did take yesterday off, I
felt probably the best I will feel all week. There
was a time or two where I witnessed a fight
between my head and my legs as my head
would say “LET’S PICK UP THE PACE AS
THIS IS EASY “ and my legs would look up
and say “ EASY FOR YOU TO SAY AS YOU
ARE JUST ALONG FOR THE RIDE”......I
finally intervened and said, “LOOK, WE
HAVE 100 OF THESE MILES TO DO THIS
WEEK, LET’S ALL GET ALONG AND JUST
GET IT DONE” and that was that.
After a terrible night of sleep, I walked the dogs
2 miles and proceeded to drive to the old college
cinder track for the days first 8 miles. On my
way, I noticed a butterfly in the road, fluttering,
but unable to fly. I stopped, and grabbed the
butterfly. I took him to the track and put him
by my water bottle and took of to attack the
first miles of the day. OH BOY......the energy
tank was below empty and I was resigned to
do 10 minute miles and cut it short if I had to.
Another 9 minute mile took me to the assaults
CONTINENTAL DIVIDE - THE 50 mile
mark !!!!! The butterfly had moved some, but
was still around the area, so I started on mile 3.
My pace for the next 3 miles picked up as I felt
more comfortable. I stopped for my last water
break at mile 6. The butterfly was still moving,
but not very much. I finished the 8 miles and
was surprised I had increased my speed and felt
good about the effort. My comrade butterfly
was no longer moving and must have departed
between the 6-8th mile. AT LEAST HE
DIDN’T DIE ON THE ROADS. Perhaps he
was sent to help me get through the run, and
by me running at that time of day, I was able to
make sure he didn’t die a senseless death on the
road. The afternoon was actually a surprise as
my legs felt pretty good. I had my good friend
Nolan with me and was joined my Mike at mile
5. I told Mike we were doing 8:45 pace and after
a mile or so, he looked at his GARMIN and
said we were more like 8-8:15! I dialed back the
last mile and we finished nicely.
THE ASSAULT - DAY 2 Tuesday,
July 30th, 2013. 8 miles completed
Tuesday morning.....71:58 (9:00 ave) ------76 to go! 8 miles completed Tuesday
afternoon....69:57 (8:45 ave)-------84 to go!
I will not bore you with a lot of details about
today’s efforts. The mornings run was in a
fine mist at the Blackburn track and was
tough because of fatigue, both body and lack
of sleep. This afternoon, I ran with Josh and
Nolan AND WE HAD A GREAT RUN! I felt
more energetic and had more power. The 8
miles melted away.
THE ASSAULT - DAY 3 Tuesday, July
31st, 2013. 8 miles completed Wednesday
morning.....68:34 (8:34 ave) ----60
to go! 8 miles completed wednesday
afternoon....68:10 (8:45 ave)-------52 to go!
Well, day 3 is in the books and, except
for the last 2 miles of the day, I felt pretty
good, like I have finally adapted to the
fatigue and pain. In fact, the pace was faster
than it has been and felt more comfortable
UNTIL mile 15 & 16. During those 2 miles,
I felt my energy drain quickly AND the
pain in my legs increased greatly. I actually
went out on my afternoon run with the
thought of running 9 or 10 and putting
more miles in ‘the bank’ in case the next 3
days were rough, but that didn’t happen.
ALL 16 miles today were run on the
Blackburn College cinder track. In fact, all
of my miles have been on a track making
it a total of 192 laps that I have done in
3 days!
THE ASSAULT -DAY 5 Friday,
August 2nd, 2013. 7 miles completed
Thursday morning.....64:31 (9:13 ave).....29
to go! 5 miles completed Thursday
afternoon....42:16 (8:27 ave)-------24 to go!
I arose this morning like a brick, slammed 2
cups of coffee, walked the dogs 2 miles, ate a
quick bowl of cereal and headed out. I planned
on getting at least 6 and then see how I felt for
the afternoon run. My first mile was a speedy
9:12 and it was not going to get much better.
I was really feeling out of gas today! I was at
the college cinder track and they were mowing
the soccer field that the track surrounds, so I
had a little nice distraction. When I started, I
actually felt pretty good. In fact, the first mile
was 8:10. I decided then that I would do 5 miles
to get to 12 for the day, which was on target.
I kept a pretty good pace and decided that I
would try to be under an 8:30 average, which
would be good considering my morning pace.
ALSO, this weekly total is the most I have ever
run in a week in my life! So all in all, it was a
good day. Mentally, I am in this. In fact, I think
I am going to have a hard time getting out of
it when the 7 days is up. I find I am looking
forward to the fatigue and pain each day. It is a
different fatigue and pain from the repeat miles
or tempo’s we do.
THE ASSAULT - DAY 6 Saturday,
August 3rd, 2013. 10 miles completed
Saturday morning...91:58 (9:12 ave).....86
down 14 to go! 6 miles completed Saturday
afternoon.....53:51 (8:59 ave).....92 down - 8
to go!
368 laps have been run on the track this
week!!!!!
Prior to bed last night, I had an Achilles
tendon give me a little hint that you do not go
from averaging 34 miles a week running for
the first 6 months of the year TO RUNNING
100 IN A WEEK. I walked the dogs 1 mile
and headed to the high school track. Russ
was sitting in his truck waiting for me and
Josh was on the track. Russ said he came out
to show support for this ASSAULT which is
something that Russ does. Russ is an example
of JUST KEEP GOING NO MATTER
WHAT, as he has had 1 knee replaced and the
other replacement is 2 weeks away, YET here
he is walking today to help show support.
Josh had just done a very respectable repeat
mile workout, getting under 6 minutes. Josh
and I took off running and Russ proceeded
to walk around the track. I have found the
past several years that you do not have to be
side by side to get the energy from the other
person, you just need to be on the track at
the same time. THIS was true with Russ
being there today as I could feel his energy.
Josh left AND HE WAS A HUGE HELP
ON THE EARLY MILES and Mike stayed
for the final 3 miles WHICH WAS A HUGE
HELP because I am not sure I would have
gotten to the 10 mile mark without him. The
afternoon run was a solo one on the cinders
at the college. It ended up being a 6 mile run
basically because I was in that ‘I FEEL LIKE
A MACHINE’! mode and I didn’t want to
stop. The only thing that wanted to stop was
my right quad, so I left it at mile 4!
THE ASSAULT -DAY 7
Sunday,
August 4th, 2013. 12 miles completed Sunday
morning .....1h 46m 37s (8:54 ave).....104
miles run - MISSION COMPLETED - all
on a track 416 LAPS RUN ON A TRACK
Today, I completed the task I set for myself last
week of running 100 miles in a week, in fact, I
concluded with 104 miles for the week. I had
a nice, quiet sense of accomplishment, but
nothing over the top as, in the grand scheme
of what’s going on in the world, this was an
insignificant event. I thought about what this
week had done for me. FIRST, it brought back
the pure love of running. ECOND, it reminded
me of how running has brought some great
people into my life that are now LIFE LONG
friends. Running brought us together, but
we stay together now because of our great
relationships. THIRD , if you focus totally on
racing, as I did for so many years, the beauty of
the sport can dull. I want to run good times in
races, but if I don’t OR even if I don’t race much,
it does not matter. What matters is that I get out
there AND ENJOY IT, be it running solo or
with my ‘pack’. FOURTH, there is a spiritual
aspect to running. Running and life parallel
each other in ways that become more apparent
the older I get. WHEN I RUN, I RECHARGE
MY SOUL!!!!!!!

Where Are They Now?
Debbie Rolf
2009 Scholarship Recipient
After graduating from Springfield High
School in 2009, I attended the University
of Miami, Coral Gables, Florida, where
I double-majored in motion picture
production and international studies, with
a minor in marketing. I graduated this May
with honors, having been on the Dean’s List
every semester. I spent the spring semester
of 2011 in England and stayed that summer
to study film in Prague. I moved to New
York in June of this year and am currently
freelancing with multiple film production
companies, including College Humor
Media, where I interned last summer.
While I competed in volleyball and
track in high school, I did not compete
competitively in college. I did, however,
participate in intramurals, and was on an
Ultimate Frisbee team, which traveled to
tournaments throughout Florida. I also

2009 Scholarship Recipient
After graduating from Springfield High
School in 2009, having competed in track
and volleyball for four years, I enrolled at
the University of North Carolina at Chapel
Hill. I double majored in mathematics
and economics with a business minor. I
graduated this May with honors, having been
admitted to the Honor’s Program as well as
having been on the Dean’s List for seven
semesters. As part of my undergraduate
course of study, I spent one summer in Italy,
thinking there would be no better place to
knock out my humanities credits by studying
art and architecture in Italy. Throw in a noncredit course on wine and that experience
became even more valuable. I am currently
enrolled in the Masters of Accounting
Valuation program at Vanderbilt University
in Nashville, which I will complete in
May, 2014.
While I was not involved in competitive
athletics at the University of North Carolina,
I did participate in intramural sports of all
kinds, including flag football, volleyball,
and softball, among others. I was also
involved in numerous campus activities,
obtained my scuba certification – after all,
I was in Miami for four years. Running
continued to be a part of my everyday life
and exercise routine. I found it interesting
to run various unique courses, including
the Biscayne Bridge across Miami Bay. This
spring, while interning for an accounting
firm producing its training and marketing
videos, I participated in the Miami
Chamber of Commerce Corporate Run for
the accounting firm. As it turns out, I ran
a PR in the 5K race that day representing
Kaufman, Rossin & Co. well and surprising
some of those on staff. Since moving to
New York, I have joined a road running
club named North Brooklyn Runners, and
go on a few runs a week with them, as well
as regularly running on my own.
I again want to thank the Roadrunner’s
Club for its scholarship.
particularly Lutheran Campus Ministry,
where I ultimately served as President of
the organization. Through LCM, I went on
mission trips each spring break, including
trips to Immokalee, Florida, Germany,
the Gulf Coast, and Panama. I was also a
volunteer coach for the local Girls on the
Run organization for the last four years. It is
a great organization with a unique approach
which has been one of the most rewarding
aspects of my life thus far.
Although I did not run competitively in
college, running has continued to be a part
of my life. I generally ran at least four days
a week throughout my college career. I
completed two half marathons, one in the
fall of 2010 and one in the fall of 2012. One
thing I learned is that there are a lot of hills
in North Carolina. I also participated in
numerous 5K’s and other fundraising races,
the most unique of these being the Krispy
Kreme Challenge which I ran every year and
successfully completed in less than the hour
given to challengers.
I remain thankful for the Roadrunner’s
Club scholarship. As I said in my essay I
submitted four years ago, I anticipated that
I would continue my running and have
enjoyed doing so.

“Just move your legs. Because if you don’t think you were born to run,
you’re not only denying history; you’re denying who you are.”
Dr. Dennis Bramble, University of Utah biologist, quoted in Born to Run
Bob Goldman Memorial Scholastic Challenge
