Part 1
I. Planning for curriculum renewal
The existing curriculum of S.4 to S.7 is examination oriented. With
the NSS curriculum, the language arts materials should be
inserted into the curriculum. Though the public examination is
important, we should strike a balance between examination and
language arts learning. Language arts learning can be useful
for learning English and life-long learning.
II.
Creating a vision
Through Language arts, students should be able to learn English
language effectively and in a fun way. With the use of
authentic English materials, students will equip themselves in a
life-long learning.
III.
Analyzing the existing program
As language arts teaching has been introduced in lower
secondary, students well receive the use of language arts
materials. However, few language arts materials are in use for
the upper forms as examination is considered the priority. In our
curriculum of upper forms, we do use films and short stories to
teach English, but few poems. Through SBA, students should
read four different texts for two years. Speaking skills and
reading skills are enhanced. With the introduction to more
language arts learning, listening, reading, speaking and writing
should be further enhanced.
The existing scheme of work is
textbook-based. Language arts learning should be introduced
to cater for the needs of students.
IV. Planning for action
Multi-literacies should be promoted through language arts
learning. Students are exposed to authentic text to promote
lifelong learning. Our language arts curriculum would include
Learning English through poems and songs, short stories and
popular culture.
V.
Revising the programme

More student-oriented programmes will be introduced.
Teachers should instill Creativity and collaborative learning into
students. Inter-class competition, developing student portfolio,
inter-school competition should be encouraged.
VI. Implementating
Formative assessment should be introduced.
Continuous
assessment marks would be a part of the assessment of students’
effort. Assessment rubrics should be used to comment students’
assignment both in class or at home. Learner’s diversity would
be observed and extra-lessons would be given to academic low
achievers students.
VII. Programme Evaluation
Panel meetings will be held regularly to monitor the programme
implementation. Questionnaires to students will be collected
after each term to see the attitude of students. Teachers’
observation will be also very important to oversee effectiveness
of the new curriculum.

Toy Story – You’ve Got A Friend In Me Lyrics
You've got a friend in me
You've got a friend in me
When the road looks rough ahead
And you're miles and miles
From your nice warm bed
You just remember what your old pal said
Boy, you've got a friend in me
Yeah, you've got a friend in me
You've got a friend in me
You've got a friend in me
If you've got troubles, I've got 'em too
There isn't anything I wouldn't do for you
We stick together and can see it through
Cause you've got a friend in me
You've got a friend in me
Some other folks might be
A little bit smarter than I am
Bigger and stronger too
Maybe
But none of them will ever love you
The way I do, it's me and you
Boy, and as the years go by
Our friendship will never die
You're gonna see it's our destiny
You've got a friend in me
You've got a friend in me
You've got a friend in me

"R-E-C-Y-C-L-E recycle, C-O-N-S-E-R-V-E conserve, don't you P-O-L-L-U-T-E,

The Doggie In the Window
Patti Page
Words and Music by Bob Merrill
Peaked at # 1 in 1953
CHORUS
How much is that doggie in the window? *(arf! arf!)*
The one with the waggley tail
How much is that doggie in the window? *(arf! arf!)*
I do hope that doggie's for sale
I must take a trip to California
And leave my poor sweetheart alone
If he has a dog, he won't be lonesome
And the doggie will have a good home
CHORUS
I read in the paper there are robbers **(roof! roof!)**
With flashlights that shine in the dark
My love needs a doggie to protect him
And scare them away with one bark
I don't want a bunny or a kitty

Rationale for choosing the short story, The Song of Spring
The story of Spring is a simple story from “The Teddy Bears’ Picnic and other
stories” published by Parragon Book, UK in 2002. As this story is simple and easy to
understand, it is suitable for the students with shaky foundation in English. The
story is a fable about a little bird rearing her chicks and a cuckoo. One day, she
found that the cuckoo was hatched in her nest and she warned the cuckoo not to hurt
her chicks before feeding the cuckoo. At last, all her chicks flew away but the
cuckoo stayed.
The genre of the story is love and fable Although the cuckoo is an ‘adopted
child’, the little bird was proud of his stay with her in the nest. Actually, the little
bird was out of her expectation that she did not look for any repayment of the cuckoo.
The cuckoo kept his promise not to hurt any chicks in the nest and loved the little bird
as natural mother.
This teaching package is for Secondary 4 students in a band three CMI school.
Most of them are weak in English foundation. There will be eight lessons for the
learning activities which are divided into three stages, including Pre-reading activities,
While-reading activities and Post-reading activities
The objectives of the activities are as follows:
Pre-reading activities:
1. Arouse the students to read the story through brainstorming.
2. Arouse the interest in the theme of the students
While-reading activities
1. Students fill in the character maps to analysis the characters.
2. Students would understand the genre of the story;
3. Students demonstrate a more critical understanding of the story
Post-reading activities
Students need to reflect on the main theme of love of the story by drawing comic strip,
discussing with their classmates, individual presention, write personal responses to the
story and do a radio drama.

(Rationale: Therefore, students have a general idea about the setting of a
kindergarten.)
Task 2: Role of the wall.
Teachers stick the big posters of the main characters on the blackboard. Ask the
students to think about the personalities of the characters. They should describe both
the positive and negative sides of each character. They feel free to raise any

Task 3 Freeze –frame
Student-actors are asked to role-play the following scene.
Bernard Bear: I’m a great favourite in the nursery. All the children loved to play
with me, and best of all they liked to make me talk. If you shook, poked and patted
me in the right way, you could have quite a long conversation with me. It was
lovely for the children.
Narrator: Bernard Bear was not content with the sounds he could do better. One
day, a little girl brought a musical box to the nursery. When the children opened
the lid a little dancer inside turned round and round, and music played. It was quite
soft and tinkling, but everyone could hear that the musical box played “Twinkle,
twinkle, little star.”
Bernard: If a silly thing like that can sing a tune, then surely a clever bear like me
can do it. It’s time I started to practice. Grrrrr. Grrrrr. Grrrrr. Hmmmm. Hmmm.

Hmmm. I want to be able to sing to the children who played with me.
Toy train: You should think yourself lucky. I can only whistle to humans. At
least you can say a few words.
Toy duck: Yes, I agree with you. If you squeeze me very hard, I sometimes squeak
but even that doesn’t work if I’ve been left in the bath for a long time.
Bernard: I don’t agree with you. I ‘m not being content with what I can do
already, but I am an ambitious bear. I want to impress everyone I meet. I want
people to say “Oh, yes, we know Bernard Bear. Isn’t he amazing?” That’s want I
want.
Toy train: You should be careful, Bernard. You might make matters worse, not
better, with all your practicing.
( Rationale: While role-playing, students will be stopped at any time by the
teacher and be asked their feelings and thoughts of the characters in the
freeze-frame. It will help students to understand the characters and the plot in
details.)
Task 4 Vocal Characterization
Students will read through the radio drama “The Singing Bear”.
(Rationale: Each of them will pay attention to the Pronunciation, stress,
intonation and rhythm of the speeches of characters.)
Task 5 Perform a play
Students are asked to discuss how to perform a drama with props, sound effects and
background music so as to create the environment and atmosphere of the play.
(Rationale: After the preparation, they will make good use of the opportunity to
perform a play)

The narrator says at the end of the play,” Perhaps Bernard will get his voice back after
all. I hope so, don’t you?” Working in your group, develop a new ending of the
play with 10 or more exchanges.
(Rationale: After the play, students have full understanding of the play and may
have more ideas about the new development of the play.)

Narrator: Once upon a time, there was a teddy bear who made a deep, growling
sound. When you poked his tummy he made a friendly, humming sound. And
when you patted him firmly on the back, he said quite distinctly, “Hello! I’m Bernard
Bear!”
Bernard Bear: I’m a great favourite in the nursery. All the children loved to play

Narrator: Poor Bernard! It didn’t matter what he did or how hard he tried, he could
only make the noises he had always been able to make. He wanted to be able to sing
to the children who played with him.

songs! So Bernard listened even harder to what the teacher had to say.
Miss Tammy: Now children, life up your heads and take deep breaths. I’m going to
open the window so that you can breathe in all that lovely fresh air. Then we’ll sing
this song as loudly as we can.
Children: Yes, Miss Tammy
Miss Tammy: Let’s see if we can’t wake up Bernard Bear over there and make him
growl?
Bernard Bear: I’m not asleep, actually.
Narrator: When the children had gone home at night, Bernard thought about what
Miss tammy had said.
Bernard: I must fill myself up with more fresh air.
(Bernard hopped over to the window and open it with his paw.)
Bernard: Now, the way to get most fresh air will be to sit on the windowsill. Let’s
see. If I put one leg this side and the other leg this side, I can just balance.

escape.

Bernard: If only I hadn’t tried to sing, I had a lovely voice before, but now I’m just
as silent as most other teddy bears. I should have been happy with who I was.
Narrator: Bernard certainly had learnt his lesson, and a few days later, when one of
the children gave him a little shake, he found himself making a tiny noise. He said,
Grrr. Grrr. Grrr.
Perhaps Bernard will get his voice back after all, I hope so, don’t you?
