Trumpeter extraordinaire with All-Star Sextet live at Nighttown!
Featuring: Wallace Roney-trumpet, Lenny White-drums, Anthony Wonsey-piano,
Ben Solomon-tenor sax, Mike Lee-tenor sax, and Marlene Rosenberg-bass.
Wallace Roney is from Philadelphia, born 1960. He began playing the trumpet at
age six. As a child prodigy, by the age of 12 Wallace became the youngest
member of the Philadelphia brass ensemble which was comprised of members of
the Philadelphia Orchestra.
During his affiliation with the brass ensemble Wallace met jazz great Clark Terry
who became a major influence, teacher, mentor and friend. Clark Terry taught him
more about the trumpet than previous classical trumpet teachers had. He taught
him technique, articulation and breath control. Clark Terry was the first of
Wallace's three greatest mentors.
Wallace's moved to Washington, DC where he attended the Duke Ellington School
of the Arts. Wallace sat in with Art Blakey's band at the age of 15 and was offered
the job to replace trumpeter Bill Hardman. A car accident that happened the day
after he was offered the gig caused Wallace's father not to let him take the job.
At the age of 16 he met another trumpet player who would become the second
greatest influence in his musical life, Dizzy Gillespie. Dizzy taught Wallace even
more advanced techniques that enhanced his ability to play intricate
improvisational phrases. During this time he also went to NY and sat in with the
great Philly Joe Jones which caused a stir. It wasn't long before he met the great
trumpet player Woody Shaw who also became a close friend and mentor. He also
played with Joe Henderson, Dollar Brand and then studied for a year at Berkele
School of Music before leaving there to rejoin Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers.
Since playing with the "Messengers" the list of people that Wallace has played with
is a veritable who's who of jazz. Too numerous to name, he likes to say that he has
played with everyone from Jay McShann to Herbie Hancock.
In 1983 he met the greatest influence in his life, the person that was his idol and
his greatest teacher, Mile Davis. Wallace's relationship with Mile was similar to
Louis Armstrong's relationship with Joe (King) Oliver. Being with Miles gave him
insight and tutelage on being a melodist, being on top of the most creative music,
and uncompromisingly taking it further.
At one point Wallace rejoined Art Blakey's Band and at the same time was invited
to play with Tony Williams' quintet.
All of the time spent studying under and hanging with Miles Davis led Miles to ask
Wallace to play with him on the Historic Miles at Montreux Concert. This was
historic because it was the first time Miles had played straight ahead jazz in 30
years. The concert was recorded and it received a Grammy. Wallace joined what
he considers to be the greatest group in history, VSOP, which included Herbie
Hancock, Ron Carter, Tony Williams, and Wayne Shorter. It is with VSOP that
Wallace won his second Grammy. In 1996 he joined Chick Corea's "Special
Wallace won his second Grammy. In 1996 he joined Chick Corea's "Special
Quintet".
Wallace formed his own group in 1993. Other than periodic special projects and
playing intermittently with other all-star groups, he has been leading his band and
is dedicated to continuing to add to the jazz music legacy.

South African Trumpet Legend Hugh Masekela joins forces with his old friend,
and colleague, pianist Larry Willis, in Duo performance Live at Nighttown!
Playing music from their 4 CD Collection "Friends".
This evening brings a grand reunion of old friends, as South African trumpet icon
Hugh Masekela and master jazz pianist Larry Willis perform in a rare duet setting.
When Masekela and Willis met as Manhattan School of Music students in the early
1960s they were both fish out of water seeking their own musical paths.
Encouraged by Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, and Harry Belafonte, Masekela
combined his homeland’s music with hard bop and R&B, creating a hugely popular
sound exemplified by his 1968 chart-topping hit “Grazing In the Grass.”
Willis was studying theory and classical voice until Masekela encouraged him to
focus on jazz (but not before making his recording debut in an Aaron Copland
opera directed by Leonard Bernstein). Willis became a first-call accompanist,
recording with everyone from Jackie McLean and Lee Morgan to Branford Marsalis
and Roy Hargrove, while also making numerous excellent albums of his own.
A few years ago they reunited in South Africa and ended up recording a four-disc
duo project, Friends, featuring Willis’s incisive piano and Masekela’s soulful
trumpet and vocals. Interpreting standards with warmth and boundless humanity,
they offer a timeless take on ageless music.
"The pair seemed to think as one as they alternated American jazz gems with African
influences. Their call-and-response interplay was filled with ear-catching surprises,
Masekela's horn style a contrast of fiery and earthy, as Willis created new configurations
of old melodies " — All About Jazz

He opened up for the late Tito Puente several times in Cleveland and New York City and was a

Cutting edge NYC saxophonist, and ECM recording artist leads All-Star Trio live
at Nighttown! Featuring: Scott Colley-acoustic bass, & Jonathan Blake-drums.
A world-class soloist, accomplished composer and formidable bandleader,
saxophonist Chris Potter has emerged as a leading light of his generation. Down
saxophonist Chris Potter has emerged as a leading light of his generation. Down
Beat called him "One of the most studied (and copied) saxophonists on the planet"
while Jazz Times identified him as "a figure of international renown." Jazz sax elder
statesman Dave Liebman called him simply, "one of the best musicians around," a
sentiment shared by the readers of Down Beat in voting him second only to tenor
sax great Sonny Rollins in the magazine's 2008 Readers Poll.
A potent improvisor and the youngest musician ever to win Denmark's Jazzpar
Prize, Potter's impressive discography includes 15 albums as a leader and sideman
appearances on over 100 albums. He was nominated for a Grammy Award for his
solo work on "In Vogue," a track from Joanne Brackeen’s 1999 album Pink Elephant
Magic, and was prominently featured on Steely Dan’s Grammy-winning album
from 2000, Two Against Nature. He has performed or recorded with many of the
leading names in jazz, such as Herbie Hancock, Dave Holland, John Scofield, the
Mingus Big Band, Jim Hall, Paul Motian, Dave Douglas, Ray Brown and many others.
Since bursting onto the New York scene in 1989 as an 18-year-old prodigy with
bebop icon Red Rodney (who himself had played as a young man alongside the
legendary Charlie Parker), Potter has steered a steady course of growth as an
instrumentalist and composer-arranger. Through the '90s, he continued to gain
invaluable bandstand experience as a sideman while also making strong
statements as a bandleader-composer-arranger.
Looking back over his 20 years since arriving in New York, Potter says, “I’ve had the
chance to learn a lot from all the leaders that I’ve worked with.
His initial gig with Red Rodney was an eye-opening and educational experience for
the 18-year-old saxophonist. “I wish I had had the perspective I have now to
appreciate what a larger-than-life character Red was.” Potter's years with Paul
Motian's Electric Bebop Band represented a wholly different approach from
Rodney’s old school bebop aesthetic on stage. “Motian has really had a big affect
on the way that I think about music,” says the saxophonist. “He approaches things
from such an anti-analytical way. It’s so different than so many of the other
musicians that I’ve had a chance to work with. Motian more relies on his aesthetic
sensibility and his instinct. He’s basically just trusting his gut and he’s so strong
about it that he can make it work. And it takes a lot of courage to do that.”
From bassist-bandleader Dave Holland he learned about the importance of focus
and willpower. "Dave is determined to make his music as strong as possible and
present it in the best way," says Potter, who has been a member of Holland's
groups for the past 10 years.
Now a respected veteran (as well as a new father), Potter continues to work as a
bandleader and featured sideman. Surely many interesting chapters await. As his
longtime colleague, alto saxophonist-composer Dave Binney, told Down Beat,
“Chris is open to anything now. From here on anything could happen.”

Legendary vocalist and pianist and brother of Nat "King" Cole leads Quartet for

Freddy Cole, the legacy of his brother Nat Cole, will stir up memories that will never
be forgotten. Now in his 50th year of performing, this great singer and pianist has
developed a huge following of his own. The instantly recognizable Cole voice and
a veteran quartet, play the classics as well as new compositions and
interpretations from a huge repertoire.
Lionel Frederick Cole was the youngest of five children. His three elder brothers,

Eddie, Ike and Nat (12 years Freddy’s senior) were all musicians. “Music was all
around me.” In the Chicago home of his youth, visitors included Duke Ellington,
Count Basie and Lionel Hampton. Cole moved to New York in 1951, where he
studied at the Juillard School of Music and found himself profoundly influenced by
John Lewis, Oscar Peterson and Teddy Wilson. He received a master’s degree from
the New England Conservatory of Music and then spent several months on the road
as a member of an Earl Bostic band that also included Johnny Coles and Benny
Golson.
It was back in New York that Cole successfully laid the groundwork for a career that
continues to flourish to this day. Cole doesn't apologize for sounding like his
brother, Nat Cole. There are certain unmistakable similarities. He plays piano and
sings, and performs live with guitar and upright bass, just like Nat. Yet his voice is
raspier, smokier, jazzier even. But he has emerged from the awesome shadow cast
by his elder brother. His vocals – suave, elegant, formidable and articulate - are
among the most respected in jazz.

Electric Bass Virtuoso leads All-Star Trio for night of Fusion at Nighttown.
Featuring: Stu Hamm-electric bass, Alex Skolnick-guitar, & Joel Taylor-drums.
STU HAMM
Through his innovative work as a solo artist and his contributions as a sideman to
Joe Satriani and Steve Vai, Stuart Hamm has firmly established himself as one of
the most influential electric bassists of the past half-century. Extending the nontraditional function of the electric bass previously revolutionized by Jaco Pastorius
and Stanley Clarke in the 1970s, Hamm helped to reshape the contemporary
concept of the bass guitar as an unaccompanied instrument with the utilization of
polyphonic, two-handed tapping, slapping and popping techniques, chords, and
harmonics. Hamm has released six critically acclaimed studio recordings and has
enjoyed recording and touring stints with guitar icons Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Greg
Howe, Carl Verheyen and Frank Gambale. Hamm has received an extensive list of
accolades such as being voted "Best Jazz Bassist" and "Best Rock Bassist" multiple
times in magazine polls conducted by several major print publications worldwide.
ALEX SKOLNICK
Alex Skolnick, born in 1968, grew up in Berkeley, California. At fourteen, he began
lessons with a local teacher with a serious reputation - his name was Joe Satriani.
At age sixteen, Alex tried out for a local band called Legacy. He found himself
recording his first album with the group, who had changed their name to
Testament. What followed were five albums and countless tours, ranking high in
many guitar magazine polls, often as ‘Best Thrash Guitarist’ and ‘Most Underrated
Guitarist.’
In 1988, while working on the second Testament album, nineteen year old Alex
happened to capture one of Miles Davis’ guitar driven electric bands on television.
This inspired an intense study of jazz, leading to, his eventual relocating to New
York City, where he earned a BFA from New School University’s jazz program (class
of 2001). It was at the New School where Alex Skolnick Trio was born. AST bends
the conviction of rock with the elegance and sophistication of jazz. Since their
debut, AST has had an entire Jazz notes column in honored with 4 ½ stars by
Downbeat, reviewed by Jazziz, The Village Voice and has charted on the JazzWeek
radio charts.
In 2005, after a hiatus of more than a dozen years, Alex rejoined Testament and
helped bring the band back to the forefront of metal. Their 2008 album, The
Formation of Damnation, was released on Nuclear Blast Records to critical
acclaim. It was named SiriusXM Liquid Metal's 'Album of the Year,’ Revolver
‘Golden God 'Album of the Year' and debuted at #59 on the Billboard Top 200.
Alex has been involved in numerous other musical projects, including the platinum
selling Trans-Siberian Orchestra.
JOEL TAYLOR
Since moving to Los Angeles in 1985, Joel Taylor has been in demand as one of the
most versatile drummers currently in the L.A. studio and touring scene. He has
performed and recorded with artists that span the whole stylistic spectrum of the
music world, such as Stanley Clarke, Allan Holdsworth, Al Dimeola, Frank Gambale,
Andy Summers, Robben Ford, Colin Hay(Men at Work), Brian Bromberg, Micky
Thomas (Starship), Bobby Kimball (Toto), and many more.

Jazz Piano Legend, and three-time Grammy Winner in rare club
appearance live at Nighttown!!!
Ramsey Lewis has been an iconic leader in the contemporary jazz movement for over 50
years with an unforgettable sound and outgoing personality that has allowed him to cross
over to the pop and R&B charts.
The Ramsey Lewis Trio, with bassist Eldee Young and percussionist Redd Holt, became a
fixture on the Chicago jazz scene, releasing their debut album, Ramsey Lewis & His
Gentlemen of Jazz, back in 1956. Lewis earned his first gold record, as well as a Grammy
award for Best Jazz Performance, for their swinging version of Dobie Gray’s hit “The In
Crowd.” He returned to the pop charts in 1966 with versions of “Hang On Sloopy” and
“Wade In The Water.” Throughout the years, Lewis’ trio has undergone membership
changes, all the while staying true to Lewis’ high musical standards.
After Young and Holt left Lewis’ trio to form their own group, the pianist hired a new
rhythm section with Cleveland Eaton on bass and Maurice White on drums. When White
left the band to form Earth, Wind & Fire, Morris Jennings signed on as the trio’s new
percussionist. White returned to produce Lewis’ 1974 smash album entitled Sun Goddess,
in which Lewis first experimented with electronic keyboards and featured Earth, Wind &
Fire on the album. In 1983, Lewis returned to the studio with Young and Holt for the
album Reunion.
album Reunion.
Throughout his illustrious career, Lewis who is a NEA Jazz Master, has also joined forces
with countless other artists to create new and innovative music. In 1984, he collaborated
with Nancy Wilson on The Two of Us; in 1988, he recorded with London’s Philharmonic
Orchestra for the album A Classic Encounter; and in 1989, Lewis and Dr. Billy Taylor cut a
set of piano duets in We Meet Again. In 1995, Lewis launched the side project Urban
Knights, in which he collaborated with a handful of successful crossover jazz stars,
including Grover Washington, Jr., Earl Klugh, and Dave Koz. In 1997, Lewis added disc
jockey to his resume, hosting a popular show on Chicago’s WNUA-FM that ran until 2009.
A new show was syndicated in 2006 under the name Legends of Jazz with Ramsey Lewis
and was broadcast on jazz radio stations across the country. In 2006, a well-received 13episode Legends of Jazz television series hosted by Lewis was broadcast by PBS. Lately
he has been touring with Philip Bailey (Earth, Wind & Fire), John Pizzarelli and Dee Dee
Bridgewater as well as doing dates in celebration of the 50th anniversary of "The 'In'
Crowd".
After having played mostly in an acoustic trio for the last fifteen years, Lewis’ latest
endeavor has him returning to his electric roots. The three time Grammy® winner will
release his new CD Taking Another Look – Deluxe Edition on July 24, 2015, featuring a
new electric quintet with Henry Johnson on guitar, Michael Logan on keys, Joshua Ramos
on bass and Charles Heath on drums. On the CD, Lewis rekindles his 1974 career-defining
album “Sun Goddess”.
The CD also features three bonus tracks. First, the legendary Dr. John serves up some
Cajun style funk with his rendition of “Jungle Strut”. Then up and comers and jazz fusion
funksters Kung Fu turn in a mesmerizing version of “Tambura”. Finally, TAUK delivers an
amazing take on “Sharing Her Journey” that clearly establishes them as a band to watch.
"I've recorded maybe 70-80 albums, and this album is definitely among the top five" said
Lewis.

Dynamic Trumpeter leads Quarter in holiday show at Nighttown.
Featuring: Curtis Taylor-trumpet; Phil Jones-piano; Dean Hulett-bass; Robert
Hubbard-drums
Grammy Award winning trumpeter Curtis Taylor’s lyrical and melodic
improvisational style displays a level of maturity far beyond his counterparts. His
unique blend of soulfulness, harmonic sensibilities and rhythm melt together for an
unforgettable sound that directly connects with the soul of the listener.
Taylor grew up in Bedford, Ohio, where his interest in music was piqued. At 10
years old, he took up the trumpet and got involved with the school’s band program.
Shawn Nichols, the school’s band director, took notice and encouraged him to get
involved in the jazz ensemble. In addition, Nichols also took Taylor to several
concerts around the city where he got his first real taste of jazz. One night after
seeing a great concert featuring trumpeters Jon Faddis and Steve Enos, Taylor was
so inspired that he decided then and there that he wanted a career in music.
Soon after that experience the accolades began piling up for the budding young
musician – no doubt it’s because the talented trumpeter has studied and
performed with some of the most renowned jazz musicians and educators. In 2007,
Taylor completed his B.A. in Jazz Studies at Michigan State University, where he
studied with Derrick Gardner, Wess Anderson and Rodney Whitaker. Two years
later he went on to attain his Master’s at Rutgers University where he studied with
the late William “Prof” Fielder. Fielder was a legendary educator who taught many
jazz notables such as Wynton Marsalis, Terence Blanchard, Sean Jones and Terrell
Stafford.
Taylor has shared the stage with jazz luminaries Winard Harper, Rodney Whitaker,
Antonio Hart and great gospel luminaries Karen Clark-Sheard, Kierra Sheard and
Antonio Hart and great gospel luminaries Karen Clark-Sheard, Kierra Sheard and
the Singletons. More extensively Taylor’s stint with jazz pianist Cyrus Chestnut
included a notable concert performance at Kennedy Center recorded for NPR’s
Jazzset, an appearance at the Spoleto Jazz Festival, and a week long engagement
at Dizzy’s Club in NYC. In addition, Taylor had the great opportunity to tour
internationally with virtuosic saxophonist James Carter’s Quintet, performing in:
Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Sweden, Canada, and Austria.
In more recent years, Taylor has had the wonderful opportunity to perform and
record with rising Jazz star Gregory Porter. Taylor’s trumpet can be heard on
Gregory Porter’s debut album Water and on his junior release (Blue Note records)
Liquid Spirit. Both albums were nominated for Grammys. Liquid Spirit won the
Grammy in the Best Jazz Vocal Album category for 2013.
Today, Taylor continues to perform nationally as band-leader and sideman. His
performing group is a quartet that features his original music and some
arrangements of standard Jazz, R&B and Neo-soul repertoire.

World Class vocalist and Cleveland Native present Holiday Shows with All-Star
Quartet at Nighttown!
Featuring: Vanessa Rubin-vocals, Bill Heid-Hammond B-3 organ, Perry Hughesguitar, & Jerome Jennings-drums.
Endowed with the kind of liquid phrasing and sheer wisdom that comes from depth
of experience on the jazz performance campaign trail, Vanessa Rubin is an everevolving classic singer in the making. The development of a true jazz singer is a
long-range prospect, laden with learning experiences that forge the voice into a
true instrument, rich with passion, deeply invested in living through life’s joys and
perils; such is the journey of Vanessa Rubin, jazz singer extraordinaire. Capable of
employing the gamut of emotions, the mature Ms. Rubin can range from whisper
to shout in the blink of an eye; from honey-laden ballads purring like a kitten, to up
tempo swinging and scatting like a fluent saxophone, she delivers the goods.
One of the surest tests of a jazz singer is her acceptance by skilled players; the
relationship between instrumentalist and vocalist is so often fraught with distrust.
Vanessa Rubin has never experienced such travails. From the time she joined the
New York jazz community in the early 80s, under the guidance of such
grandmasters as Barry Harris and Frank Foster, Rubin’s acceptance has been
universal. Instrumentalists have always been impressed by her way around a
song, her willingness to flow with their muse, and her innate ability to swing that
music.
The list of great musicians who have graced her recordings and bandstands is
quite impressive: Monty Alexander, Cecil Bridgewater, Kenny Burrell, Frank Foster,
Billy Higgins, Etta Jones, Lewis Nash, Houston Person, Patience Higgins, Don
Braden, Toots Thielemans, Steve Turre, Cedar Walton, Grover Washington, Jr., and
James Williams are just a few of the masters who’ve lent their skills to support Ms.
Rubin’s artistry. More recently she has completed auspicious global tours with
Herbie Hancock, the Woody Herman Orchestra, and the Jazz Crusaders.
