Spring LOC Derby Winners Have Amazing Stories
Brace Yourself – Female Angler
Wins LOC Derby … Again
By Bill Hilts, Jr.
By Bill Hilts, Jr.
The Spring Lake Ontario Counties (LOC) Trout and
Salmon Derby, held May 2-11, 2014, was filled with unique, humorous and inspiring stories this year when the awards ceremony
was held on Mother’s Day at Captain Jack’s in Sodus Point.
While most sane anglers were honoring their mothers during this
special holiday, the LOC Derby winners were recapping their
fishing adventures on Lake Ontario during an extremely unusual
spring after one of the most severe winters on record.
The $15,000 Grand Prize fish – which must now be a salmon after new rules were enacted in 2013 to headline New York’s
big money fish, the “king” – went to John Tustin of Canonsburg,
Penn. Just one ounce separated the Grand Prize and second place
The Summer Lake Ontario Counties (LOC) Trout and
Salmon Derby was held June 14-July 27, 2014 and once again
some very impressive catches came to the scales for this popular
lakewide competition. After some seesaw action that saw West
battle East in most of the species categories, it was the middle
of the lake that came through with the Grand Prize catch – a 31
pound, 11 ounce Chinook salmon that was hauled in by Stephanie Brace of Oswego while pre-fishing the Sodus Pro-Am out of
Wayne County. She collected the $10,000 Grand Prize (plus the
$100 daily salmon prize in July) at the awards ceremony held at
Captain Jack’s in Sodus Point on July 27.
While more and more women have been enjoying out-

LOTSA Salmon School, Expo Set
The Lake Ontario Trout and Salmon Association (LOTSA) has announced its plans moving forward for 2015 on its
popular Salmon School and Lake Ontario Marketplace Expo.
The group has secured the instructors for its Salmon School on
Saturday January 24, 2015. The Marketplace Expo will be held
January 25. Both will coincide with the Second Annual Greater
Niagara Fishing and Outdoor Expo to be held Jan. 23-25 at the
Conference and Events Center of Niagara Falls.
Based upon experiences from past Salmon Schools, President Joe Yaeger of Amherst knew what he was looking for. He
knew they needed 2 to 3 instructors to effectively teach the 6 hour
class. The angling group wanted them to be expert fishermen who
have fished out of many different ports and been successful wherever they fished.
They wanted them to be experienced in catching a lot of
fish (running charters) and with catching large Kings (tournament fishermen). They wanted people who spend the majority of
their season fishing the Western end of Lake Ontario and someone who spends the majority of their year fishing the Eastern end

of Lake Ontario. They also wanted someone who knows the Lake
Michigan fishery very well but also has experience fishing Lake
Ontario.
They wanted guys that would openly share their knowledge with them and were comfortable giving fishing seminars.
Yaeger believes that they found these guys in a group headed up
by Capt. Paul Czarnecki of Waterford, PA (“Freespirit” out of
Oak Orchard); Capt. Greg Gehrig of Oswego (“Top Gun” out of
Oswego); and Mark McClutchey (“Diabolical” out of Lake Michigan). Yaeger thinks that these 3 guys working together will give
them another excellent class and are diversified enough to give
attendees some new things to think about over the winter. Continued on page 3

LOTSA Salmon School continued from page 2
LOTSA is keeping the fee for the class the same as it
was last year ($75) and the group will provide more info on it in
September when they open up registrations. Every School they’ve
offered in the past has sold out and they expect this one to do the
same. Mark your calanders and be ready to make a decision in
September so that you don’t end up on the “waiting list” to get a
seat. Follow the progress at www.lotsa.org.
The Marketplace Expo should be even bigger and better
in 2015, including over 50 tables of Great Lakes-related salmon,
trout and walleye gear for sale at bargain pricing. The Expo is
free with your admission into the overall Show, giving attendees
a bigger bang for their buck. This show will once again have a
huge focus on education with quality seminars being given on all
aspects of Great Lakes fishing.

Reel Excitement, Screamer Win Tourney;
Maverick and Screamer Win Cups
By Bill Hilts, Jr.
What a difference a week can make, especially as it relates
to fishing. In the first weekend of the Niagara USA version of the
30th Annual Lake Ontario Pro-Am Salmon Team Tournament
out of the ports of Olcott and Wilson, tournament limit catches
were the norm. In the final weekend of the two-tournament contest held May 31-June 1, only one team had a 12-fish limit both
days – and they won the tournament, held in memory of Walter
“Skip” Hartman.
In the Classic Division of the two-day tournament, Reel
Excitement led by Capt. Bob Songin of Rochester was the top
dog by putting together two consistent days of fishing for a total
score of 360.2 points (based on 10 points per fish and a point per
pound for the contest). They were in fifth place after the first
day, more than 37 points behind leader Ace Charters and Capt.
Jimmy Samia of Massachusetts. They won a check for $6,000.
“We started at the Niagara Bar and picked up some salmon and trout there the first day, then picked up to look for some
bigger fish off Wilson,” said Songin at the awards ceremony in
Krull Park, Olcott. “The second day we focused most of our day
on the Bar, thinking it would give us our best chance for numbers. It did.” After three days of east wind, fishing went south for
most of the trollers, including Ace. After a limit catch the first
day, they could only muster seven fish for day two to score 103
for the day and a two day total of 328.08 points and fall short of
Songin’s efforts. They earned a check for $3,100.
Rounding out the Top 7 in the money were Oh Baby led
by Matt LeClair of Plattsburgh with 302.48 points; Capt. Chris
LoPresti and his Maverick team from Spencerport with 295.02;
Capt. Bob Stevens of Medina and his Sunrise II team with 282.76
points; Screamer led by Dave Antenori of Pennsylvania with
278.70; and Todd Pavlik’s Pacific Time team with 248.21 points. NIAGARA COUNTY

Capt. Rob Taddeo and his Hideout team caught the big
fish, a 23.73 pound king salmon for this tournament.
This took us to the Niagara USA Classic Cup, awarded
for consistency over the two weekends. Using a unique scoring
system, top team over the two weekends was LoPresti’s Maverick
with a final score of 533 – earning a check for $20,000. Second
place was Screamer with a score of 518, good for $10,000. Third
place was White Mule led by Capt. Bob Cinelli of Newfane with a
score of 488. The team won $5,000.
In the Trophy Division of the tournament, which represents the best five fish each day, Screamer moved in from eighth
place after the first day to nip Day One leader Ace by less than
three points – 198.05 to 195.10. They earned a check for $3,000.
Third place was Maverick with 177.62 points, followed by Top
Gun/Free Spirit led by Capt. Greg Gehrig of Oswego with 176.39;
Reel Excitement with 176.11; Pacific Time with 172.25; and
Tomahawk and Jonathan Ross with 172.18 points – five places
separated by five points.
In the Niagara USA Trophy Cup, Antenori scored 538
overall to win the $5,000 check based on the two Niagara tournaments. Second place was LoPresti’s Maverick squad with 518,
good for $3,000. Third place honors went to Top Gun/Free Spirit
with a score of 294. They received a $2,000 check.
In the Recreational Open Division, a more relaxed category with fewer rules based on a three fish catch, Renegade led
by Anthony LaRock of Burt won top honors with a score of 85.55
points which included a big fish of 22.27 points. They won $725
for first place, $200 for big fish and a $500 gift Certificate for Fish
Hawk. Second place was Balls Deep and Bob Woods of Pennsylvania with 67.01; third was Mean Machine and Kyle Hovak of
North Tonawanda with 63.86; and Balls Deep 3 was fourth with a
score of 62.02 points, led by Brandon Poole of Newfane.
For the Sunday Recreational Open contest, Tri-Lakes,
led by Matthew Briggs of Arkport was the leading scorer with a
total of 75.84 points. They also weighed in big fish for the day, a
22.79 pound king salmon. Second place was Renegade with 73.90
points. Third place went to Just One More and Bryan Lukehart
of Pennsylvania with a score of 66.20. Fourth place was Ray
Pacuilli and his Double R team from North Tonawanda with a
score of 40.00 points.

38th Annual Greater Niagara Fish Odyssey Derby
Set for August 17-25
The Greater Niagara Fish Odyssey Derby – the derby
formally known as the “Fall Classic” – will be holding its 38th
Annual contest August 16-24, 2014. In what started out as the
Niagara County Fishing Derby, this competition is now opened
to three counties (Niagara, Erie and Orleans) in an attempt to
encourage more involvement in this family-oriented event. With
a big focus on the Junior Division, this move will give the kids
more opportunity to wet a line because of the fact that they are
out of school.
With the huge Lake Ontario Counties (LOC) Trout and
Salmon Fall Derby kicking off on Aug. 15, this will give contesthungry anglers an appetizer to the big bucks. While most everything else is the same, there are a few new twists that could
land you a few extra dollars. First, a daily $100 prize for the
biggest salmon caught each day – taking a page out of the LOC
event – is being offered August 16-23. Second, the Lake Ontario
Trout and Salmon Association (LOTSA) is back again with a
special $500 cash prize for the largest salmon caught by a LOTSA member while competing in the derby. In addition to that,
the witness (which also has to be a LOTSA member) will also
receive a check for $200. When you register for the Fish Odyssey, toss in another $10 for your LOTSA membership and you’ll
be considered registered in that fine organization. You can also
register online at www.lotsa.org.
Species categories for the adults include salmon, smallmouth bass, walleye, carp, lake trout and brown/rainbow trout.
For the kids 15 years and under, categories will be salmon, trout,
bass, walleye, carp and panfish. Entry fee will stay the same at
$20 for the adults; free for the kids. A one day pass will also be
available for $10. It doesn’t get any easier than that. Kids can
register online at www.fishodyssey.net. The adults can, too!
Changes to the Odyssey website should be in place very
soon thanks to Karen Evarts at The Boat Doctors. Check out
www.fishodyssey.net regularly. Registrations should be out by
Aug. 1 wherever LOC registrations are available in Erie, Niagara and Orleans counties.
Every year the derby remembers someone we lost previously that meant a lot to the fishery and this year it’s Charlie the
Chimp who passed on late in 2013. He was honorary chairchimp
since 2002, giving kids a special challenge to try and beat his
marks to win a special prize. He also enjoyed fishing and was
the recipient of quite a bit of media coverage when he competed
in the big 2001: A Fish Odyssey. We are sad to see Charlie go,
but his memory will live on in the Fish Odyssey. Once again,
The Primate Sanctuary (thanks to Carmen and Christie Presti)
will be donating a new bike that will be drawn at the awards
ceremony for every kid that’s registered in the fun contest. Get
those kids out fishing!!

on the Grand Prize LOC fish by two ounces – and also cash in
on the Wilson event. It still earned $1,000 in the LOC. And then
they topped it all off with winning the Wilson Harbor Invitational tournament on Saturday – all from Campanella’s new 27-foot
Sport Craft bearing the name “Eyecrosser.”
“We had a little honey hole east of Olcott around the 30
Mile Point area,” said Downey. “We were pulling a black dot
spin doctor and a Pro-Am fly behind a slide diver 60 feet back
on monofilament line over 35 feet of water then the fish hit. We
were trolling north on an east wind and it took us 15 minutes to
bring in.” In case Campanella’s name sounds familiar, he won
the Grand Prize in the Fall LOC in 2012 – also while fishing out
of Olcott.
In the Brown Trout Division, it was 17 year old Tanner
Niezgoda of Newfane hauling in a 16 pound, 10 ounce brown
trout east of Olcott – also fishing around the 30 Mile Point area
– to take the top prize of $1,100. Of course, there’s more to the
story.
Fishing with Team Thrillseeker out of Capt. Vince Pierleoni’s 22-foot Crestliner with his team partner Nick Glosser
of Amherst, the three were trying to pound out fish. “We were
scouting for salmon when the fish hit,” said Niezgoda, fishing in
his first derby ever. “It screamed out line and we thought it was a
salmon, but it stayed down and Capt. Vince thought it was a big
brown. He was right.” They caught the fish at 7:30 am pulling a
Live Target plug in 14 feet of water off boards – 60 feet back. It
took him 20 minutes to reel in the big brown.
Second place brown trout should have been a first place
if you hear Steve Gerloff of Douglasville, Penn tell the story. The
fish weighed in at 16 pounds, 8 ounces at the end of the day – but
the team of Mike Geiger of Wellsboro, Penn., Harold Hess of
Sinking Spring, Penn. and James Salter of Mechanicsburg, Penn.
all wanted to stay out and fish for kings aboard Geiger’s 26-foot
Baha named “This is It.”
“If we would have weighed the fish in right away we would
have won,” insisted Gerloff. “It sat in the cooler losing weight
and at one point spit out a big goby!” They were trolling east of
Olcott in 21 feet of water on the final Saturday when the fish hit
a charteuse Bomber with an orange belly. They were fishing it off
a planer board 125 feet back, using a ¼ ounce keel weight to get
the bait down a little. It was his biggest brown ever. They had just
changed baits five minutes before it hit.
The Lake Trout Division was also filled with good story
material, starting with the first place catch hauled in by Michael
Ehrhardt of Brockport – a 25 pound, 7 ounce fork tail he hauled
in while fishing with his wife Dawn and Capt. Matt Yablonsky of
Youngstown, the skipper on Wet Net Charters and no stranger to
the winner’s circle. They won $1,100.
“We actually caught one bigger that same day,” said Ehrhardt, a licensed captain and guide himself. “Dawn hooked into
a big fish that she fought to the boat, a lake trout that bounced
between 28 and 29 pounds on our hand scale. The problem was it
was foul hooked! After a little discussion, we knew it wasn’t legal
and we released the fish back into the lake. Twenty minutes later
we caught the winner.” Using a chartreuse gator spin doctor and
a green glow fly 225-feet back behind a slide diver, they wanted
their baits as close to the bottom as possible in 85 feet of water.
They caught the fish at 1 pm. Yablonsky’s boat? Get the Net Wet,
a 21-foot Lund Baron that is a fish catching machine. And the
spin doctor had teeth marks on it!
Second place lake trout was a 24 pound, 11 ounce fish
reeled in by Clair Lawson of Dalton, NY. Fishing with Jerry
Gibson of Dalton aboard his 18.5 foot Sea Ray called “Gibby II,”
they were trolling between the Niagara Bar and Wilson when a
lake trout hit. It turned out to be a 19 pounder that they hauled
in, losing their net in the process. They headed into port to weigh
the fish and look for a net. The only net they could find was a
small bass net with a hole in it. That same day, back at the same
GPS coordinates, another fish hit only this one was bigger – and
bigger than any net they had! They were trolling a blue and green
Pirate spoon on the bottom in 65 feet of water when the big fish
hit the rigger along with two dipsy divers. They grabbed the
dipsy divers first and reeled those fish in before they grabbed the
rigger rod. They immediately realized it was a much bigger fish.
The rest is history. Some catches are just meant to be. Every lake
trout came from Niagara County. Twenty pounds, 14 ounces was
20th place.
In the Walleye Division, Tim Queior of Dexter managed
to catch a 10 pound, 15 ounce fish from the Henderson harbor
area on opening day of walleye season to take the top prize. He
was fishing with Aaron LaFlair of Watertown, who also had a
fish that placed ninth overall with a nine pound, 10 ounce marble
eye. They were trolling out of a 25 foot Sport Craft named “Reel
Time” with a gold Husky Jerk bait to win the division. The bait
was 120-foot back off a planer board over 44 feet of water near
Point Peninsula. First place was worth $1,100.
Second place was also 10 pounds, 15 ounces, weighed in by

door sports like fishing and hunting, the female contingent are
still in the minority. That’s hasn’t stopped them from cashing in
time and time again in the LOC derbies, which proves an important point: Anyone can win the LOC Derby! However, like the
state lottery, you have to be in it to win it!
“We didn’t think it was as big as it was,” said Brace who
was tournament fishing out of Sodus Bay at the time of her catch
on July 18. Fishing out of her boyfriend’s 29-foot Penn Yan name
CB II – who just happens to be Tom Allen of Oswego – she was
alternating reeling in fish with teammate Kelly Burger of Baldwinsville. Kelly’s husband Eric made up the fourth team member.
It took Brace 25 minutes to bring the fish in, the biggest fish she
has ever caught. “We were fishing in 400 feet of water in front
of Port Bay, using a wire dipsy on a two and a half setting,” said
Brace. It was 250 feet back when the fish hit and it took out about
400 more feet of line before they finally got the fish in.
“Stephanie can reel fish in as good if not better than the
guys,” said Allen, who was leading the derby for a short time
with a 28 pound, three ounce king himself. For the Grand Prize
catch, they were using an A-Tom-Mik B fly (what else, Allen owns
the company) trailing behind a Mountain Dew E-Chip Pro Troll
flasher. “The girls reel in 95 percent of all the fish we catch.” The
team also managed to win Big Fish Friday during the weekend
contest thanks to Stephanie’s timely fish-catching heroics. “No
one is allowed on the boat without a derby ticket.”
Runner up and first place in the Salmon Division was
James Foltz of Kingsley, Penn. with a 30 pound, 3 ounce king
caught during the Oswego Pro-Am tournament July 12. He was
fishing with Capt. Greg Gehrig of Oswego aboard his 40-foot
Jersey named “Top Gun,” with a full crew of teammates – Mike
Areola of Oswego; Mike and Joe Leen of Philadelphia, Penn.;
and Dennis Cameron of Philadelphia. “We were fishing west of
Oswego, 85 feet down over 170 feet of water with a green-yellowsilver R&R spoon when the fish hit,” said Foltz at the awards
gathering. He caught the fish around 11 am and it took him 20
minutes to bring in the salmon. While it’s not his biggest king
ever it is his highest-ranking derby fish ever. Timing is everything.
Second place in the Salmon Division went to Charles
Gambino of North Rose with a 29 pound, seven ounce caught at 6
am in 150 feet of water north of the Channel at Sodus.
Fishing with Jack Zimmerman of Muncy, Penn. they had just set
up a wire diver 220 feet back on a No. 3 setting – pulling a white

Capt. Roger Young of Torrington, Conn. earned top
honors in the Brown Trout Division with the catch of his 28-year
career on Lake Ontario – a 21 pound, four ounce brown trout
caught between Wilson and Olcott while derby fishing with angling partner Joe Waseleski of Erving, Mass. They had started to
troll out of Wilson early in the morning for browns in the shallows but then opted to head out to 300 foot depths to see what
they could pick up. Almost immediately the duo hit a dandy king
they estimated to be over 30 pounds that Waseleski reeled all the
way to the back of the boat. As Young lunged with the net, he
pulled the hooks out of the mouth of the fish by accident. They
will never know how much that fish weighed. In the meantime,
as they turned the 27-foot Sea Ray named “Papa Smurf” around,
the other dipsy diver went off at 130 feet back on a one-and-ahalf setting. By this time they were over 338 feet of water and
Young grabbed the rod. After giving him the battle of his life, 30
minutes later they stood in awe looking at a 21 pound, four ounce
first place fish … after Waseleski successfully netted it, of course.
“We were using a green skirt Silver Streak spoon to catch that
fish, the biggest brown I have ever seen in my life,” said Young.
He noted that they went back to the same spot in the afternoon
and had some of his best salmon and steelhead fishing ever, limiting out in two hours with customers.

Second place brown trout went to Kay Boeckel of West
Henrietta with a 17 pound, 12 ounce fish while fishing out of
Sandy Creek in Monroe County. Trolling with her husband John
aboard their 28-foot Sea Ray, it was “Game On” for the lady
angler as she selected a Michigan Stinger in blue alewife because
“it looked pretty.” They had gone out in the afternoon out of
Sandy Creek, focusing their attention in 65 feet of water with a
wire diver set at two-and-a-half and 150 feet back. “It’s the biggest brown trout I’ve ever caught,” said Kay at Captain Jack’s.
“We always fish the derbies and this is why.”
The Lake Trout Division turned out to be the “Battle on
the Bar” as three duos slugged it out until the final weekend of
the contest. In the end, it was Robert Turton of Sanborn, fishing
with his dad, Roger, weighing in a 24 pound, 10 ounce Niagara
Bar fish on the final weekend to take top honors. “We were
working a K9 Kwikfish lure with orange-green holographic
colors when the fish hit our downrigger set at 78 feet on the
bottom,” said the younger Turton. Fishing out of their 19-foot
Monarch named “RT & Son,” it took them 10 minutes to bring
the fish in, catching it at 9 am. The funny thing is that they were
fishing alongside the second place lake trout holders … it’s just
that they didn’t know it yet.
“You are fishing in our spot,” the Killer B’s shouted over
to the Turtons in jest after the first place fish was reeled in. They
brought that up at the awards ceremony, too. The Killer B’s are
none other than Richard and Patrick Barber of Niagara Falls.

Excitement at the Point
The Sodus Point Pro-Am Comes to Town
WAYNE COUNTY
It is 1:15 pm at the pier heads of Sodus Bay. A few boats
are on the horizon…mere specks against the blue sky. At 1:30
it appears they have multiplied and are coming from the east,
west and north. Its 1:45 and they are coming fast. Is this some
sort of modern day attack of Sodus Point?
“What’s going on,” a few spectators on the pier asked.
“Is there a boat race?
No…its Pro-Am time at Sodus Point at the big boats are
charging the channel because they need to be in the pier heads
by 2 pm or be disqualified from the tournament. And they wait
till the last second.
Sunday, July 20th was the final day of the Sodus Point
Pro-Am and the boats were heading for the scales to weigh
their catches of trout and salmon.
Captain Jack’s Tavern, which was headquarters for the
two day competition, was crowded with a large Sunday crowd
and more than once you heard “What’s going on?”
Dave Antenori and his Screamer A-Tom-Mik Team were also
asking the same question, however their interest was on the
scoreboard. Would they take first place on the second day of
the two day tourney?
“We boxed-out with our limit of 12 fish on day one,”
Antenori said during the awards ceremony held at Captain
Jack’s on Sunday afternoon. “We ran to Oswego and fished the
east side and set-up for kings in 180 to 250 feet of water. We
took five fish with cut bait and then it died so we went in for
browns.”
The Screamer A-Tom-Mik Team, whose home port is
Oswego, took their final brown at 11 am…then ran back to
Sodus Point. “It’s a one and a half hour trip from Sodus to Oswego and we made the pier heads by 1:45 pm, Antenori said.
Day one’s top dog was the Screamer Team with 234.70.
The scoring system is 10 points per fish and one point per
pound.
Antenori took his team back to Oswego on day two.
“We boated three kings in two hours and lost two,” he said.
“We also boated a steelhead, however we did move closer to

Sodus Pro AM continued from page 10
First place in the Amateur Division was won by Tony
Chatt and his 5-More Minutes Team. Chatt, from West Monroe,
New York left the chute and went east to fish the Fair Haven area.
“We saw some action on the screen when we left the Oswego ProAm to head to Sodus so that’s where we started.” Chatt said. “When we got there I liked what I saw.
“We worked the same area all day in 150 to 170 feet of
water. The fish came on flasher- flies rigs. We were six for seven.”
On day two Chatt and team decided to return to the Fair Haven
area. “The big fish were gone. The screen did not look good,” he
said. We were two for three and gave it an hour and half then
went west to Hughes’ Marina. It was now 10:30 am and we only
had three hours to fish.”
They worked 75 to 90 feet of water and pick-up four
browns and one lake trout. “We were using Michigan Stingers,”
Chatt said. They boxed-out, picked up and again headed east to
make the Sodus Point pier head by 2pm. “We used a lot of gas to
catch these fish.”

Rapala Down Deep Husky Jerk Lures
With an oversized deep diving lip and wide-range of fish attracting colors, Rapala’s Down Deep Husky Jerk has become a
favorite lure of the Great Lakes angler. The Deep Husky Jerk is hand-tuned and tank-tested to swim perfectly right out of the package and performs well when running fast and deep. The lures neutral buoyancy allows lure to suspend in the strike zone while the
tuned internal rattle chamber creates a loud, rhythmic attraction. The premium black nickel VMC treble hooks are sticky sharp and
durable, and will take the abuse of anything that swims.
Try the Down Deep Husky Jerk next time you are targeting big water walleye, salmon, trout, bass, and pike. FishUSA.com
offers these lures in 8 natural colors, 7 glass finishes, and 5 FishUSA.com custom colors. These custom color schemes have been meticulously chosen by our own Great Lakes tournament anglers and charter captains.
The 4 in. version (Model DHJ10) dives 7-16 ft. when trolled, weighs 3/8 oz. and features two size 5 treble hooks. The 4 ¾ in. version
(Model DHJ12) dives 8-19 ft. when trolled, weighs 1/2 oz. and features three size 5 treble hooks.

Rules and
Regulations
EACH PARTICIPANT IN THE DERBY:
1. May enter fish caught in the U.S. and Canadian waters of Lake Ontario by
hook and line and retrieved and brought to net by rod and reel in a legal
manner as designated by New York State DEC or Province of Ontario
MNR. Derby waters are limited to those where lake regulations are in
effect. Niagar River boundaries are the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge for
shore anglers and Devils Hole for boat Anglers. Tributary and special
regulation waters are excluded.
2. Must officially register by 7:00 A.M. on the day you wish to fish and prior
to fishing and be in possession of his/her registration card at all times and
present the card to any official Derby personnel upon request.
3. Anyone between the ages of 10 and 16 at the time of registration will
be registered as a youth. Minimum age for entry into any LOC Derby
is 10. Anyone 16 or older must register as an adult. All registrants
compete for the same divisional prizes.
4. Agrees to abide by the LOC Official Rules and Regulations and agrees
that failure to comply with any of the rules will result in automatic
disqualification, forfeiture of all prizes, recognition as a prize winner and
the right to enter any future LOC Derby. LOC Derby reserves the right to
deny participation in a LOC Derby to anyone.
5. Anyone disqualified in another Lake Ontario fishing Derby or tournament
such as, but not limited to, the Lake Ontario Pro-Am, Niagara County Fish
Odyssey, Orleans County Derby, or Wayne County Derby will be ineligible
for any prize consideration in and LOC Derby.
6. Agrees that all persons aboard the same boat (private or charter) must
be registered in the Derby, including captain and mate. In the event that
there are any persons on board the boat who are not registered (whether
they are fishing or not), all fish caught during that particular outing may
not be offered or considered for any prizes. A supporting affidavit may be
required by all registered contestants aboard the same boat, affirming the
integrity of the catch and also that no unregistered person was aboard the
boat. EXCEPTION: Youths under the age of 10 are allowed on the
boat or charter as observers only! Numbers of rods and fish limits
are based solely on the number of registered participants.
7. Must be fishing with at least (1) other LOC Derby registered participant
(minimum of two (2) persons per boat). In the case of stream, pier, shore
fishing, etc. the witness must be in the immediate company of the person
who caught the fish. When entering their fish, must be accompanied by
their witness who signs an affidavit which corroborates the method, time
and location of the catch, which will not be official until signed by the
Weigh Master. The minimum age of a witness is 10 years old.
8. Official weigh-in will not take place until the entrant and their accompanying
witnesses present their official registration cards to the Weigh Master in
charge.
9. Agrees that each contestant who offers a prize winning fish and all
registered affirming witnesses will be subject to a polygraph (lie detector)
or voice stress test if so specified by the Derby Rules Committee. And
further agrees that failure to pass the test will result in disqualification.
Disqualification will result if an entrant refuses a polygraph or is determined
to be unfit for a polygraph due to drug or alcohol consumption. The official
LOC polygraphist shall make this determination. Polygraph tests will be
administered on the day of the awards ceremony.
10. Agrees that the Weigh Master must weigh in all fish entered in the LOC
Derby at an official LOC Weigh Station on the day caught. Agrees to these
weigh station hours for the Spring Derby. May 3rd to the 11th 2013, 9:00
a.m. to 8 p.m. May 12th, 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Spring Derby Ends at 1:00
PM on May 12th. Summer hours, check with your weigh in station.
11. Must enter the fish whole, not gaffed, gutted or snagged and winners
will be determined by the weight of the fish only. Any fish containing
any foreign materials (including but not limited to water, ice, and
weights) will disqualify that fish from consideration for any prize.
Black salmon will not be eligible for entry in this Derby. Fish will be
examined for gill net marks, bleached or slimy gills, hook and/or gaff
marks, fin rot or fungus, freezer burn, clouded eyes, unresponsive
flesh – any of which can disqualify the fish.
12. Agrees that the Weigh Master prior to weighing will remove all bait fish

of an ounce will be recorded. Partial ounce weights will be rounded
down in all instances.

microscopic tissue examination, internal examination, entering the
cavity through an incision or through the use of a probe and not limited
to temperature probes.
15. Agrees that LOC entrant who enters the prize winning fish will be
the sole recipient of cash or merchandise awards. Dividing of prizes
will be handled by entrant, NOT the LOC Derby Committee. A prior
written agreement as to the division of prizes is recommended.
16. Agrees that all trout must weigh a minimum of ten (10) pounds and
salmon must weigh a minimum of twenty (20) pounds for entry in the
Spring Derby. Minimum weight for Walleye in the Spring Derby is (8)
eight pounds. Lake Trout must be at least 30 inches long. Only initial
measurement by Weigh Master is valid due to imminent shrinkage.
For the Summer and Fall Derbies trout must weigh a minimum of ten
(10) pounds and Salmon twenty-five (25)
17. Agrees that all fish in contention, as determined by the sole discretion
of Derby officials, are property of the Derby until released by a Derby
official. All weighed fish must be gill punched by the Weigh master. It
is the sole responsibility of the entrant to retain any fish submitted
for prize consideration until the Derby results are declared official.
18. Is entitled to only one division cash prize. No participant may win
more than one of the division prizes, although contestants may enter
more than one fish. If the succeeding fish is larger, the smaller of the
fish with least weight will be withdrawn.
19. Agrees to submit all disputes to a designated Derby official within
eight hours after the fish is entered, and agrees that all disputes will
be submitted to the Derby Rules Committee, whose decision will be
final. The Derby Rules Committee shall consist of Derby Organizers.
20. Agrees that the decision of the judges will be final and not reviewable
in any form. In the event of a tie, the person who enters the first fish
according to the date and time recorded on the fish entry form will be the
winner. The second or subsequent fish, entered at the same weight, will
assume the next lowest division position, and so on until all positions
are filled. If two or more fish of identical weight should be entered on
the same date and time, a toss of the coin will determine the winner
and the loser will assume the next lower position in the division.
21. Agrees that award recipients are responsible for payment of all taxes
on prizes $600 and more. Refusal to submit proper Social Security
information will result in disqualification.
22. Agrees that the LOC Derby Employees and their families may enter
and fish in the Derby, but are not eligible for prizes.

or employees, harmless from any liability of any nature and kind for
injuries and/or damages suffered by the entrant during the period that
the Derby is held.

weather conditions. Listen to and heed the warnings of the U.S. Coast
Guard and local weather reports, before and during each day’s fishing
and, not to place in jeopardy themselves or others on the boat during
the Derby. To have personal floatation devices aboard and to operate

Summer Derby continued from page 9
Both had fish on the board but they were trying to improve their
ranking, fishing out of their 17.5-foot Crestliner named “Killer
B’s.” On the final morning of the derby, again on the Niagara
Bar, they were working a homemade spin-n-glow spreader behind cowbells to target lake trout in 105 feet of water. At 8:30 am
they hit a double header and Richard’s catch took precedence
because of its size, a 24 pound, eight ounce fish that was the biggest of his life. The last weekend heroics knocked Steve Klejdys
of North Tonawanda to third after leading for more than a month
with a 22 pound, six ounce Niagara Bar fish. He fishes with his
father, Ed.
In the Rainbow-Steelhead Division, it was Mike Sabo of
Flemington, NJ winning the top slot with a 16 pound, eight ounce
fish reeled in during the Sodus Pro-Am event July 19. Fishing out
of Sabo’s 22-foot Chris Craft “Roll With It,” the team (consisting of Rich and Ryan Raidline of Pen Argyl, Penn. and Kyle and
Rick Ueberroth of Lancaster, Penn.) needed some fish in the boat
to help improve their ranking in the Amateur Division. At 12:55
pm, the team hit a double while fishing nine miles east of Sodus.
For the steelhead, they were 92 feet down over 350 feet of water,
trolling a Finger Lakes Tackle blue alewife spoon on a free floating cheater set-up (putting the spoon roughly 46 feet down). “We
saw the fish come out of the water before we even knew we had
the fish on,” said Sabo. “We had it to the boat in less than a minute.” It was the biggest steelhead of Sabo’s life, coming at a great
time for the derby and the tournament. They finished in third
place for the day in the tournament; fourth overall.
Second place in the LOC Derby Rainbow-Steelhead
Division went to Rich Steubing of Brockport with a 15 pound,
12 ounce fish caught the last weekend of the derby out of Sandy
Creek. He was fishing with Nick Bazinet of Brockport aboard
Steubing’s 22.5-foot Thompson called “Live Action.” Fishing in
the Sandy Creek Shootout, they were working the area around
Devil’s Nose when they hit the steelie 63 feet down over 150 feet
of water while trolling a Finger Lakes Tackle “Problem Child”
spoon. They, too, were fighting a double at the time they caught
the second place fish. It was the first time that Steubing has ever
finished in the top two, while it was Bazinet’s first derby. Yes, timing is everything.
Youth award winners were: Hunter Peterson of Home,
Penn. with a 28 pound, 15 ounce salmon caught out of Olcott;
Ashton Mickatavage of Ashland, Penn. with a 12 pound, eight
ounce rainbow trout while fishing out of Sodus; Tyler Rawlins of
Hilton with an 18 pound, one ounce lake trout fishing out of Point
Breeze; and Daniel Zeek of Rockaway, NJ with a 12 pound, two
ounce brownie caught out of Sodus.
