Hay Takes Spring LOC Derby to School
Veterans Team Up to Win Summer LOC Grand Prize
By Bill Hilts, Jr.
By Bill Hilts, Jr.
For the fishing trio of Mike Hay of Lake Luzerne, Scott
Keeler of Lake Luzerne and Randy Savage of Queensbury, going to school proved to be the ticket to success as they combined
to collect the $15,000 Grand Prize check in the spring Lake Ontario Counties Trout and Salmon Derby held May 1-10, 2015. Hay was the angler reeling in the fish, a 24 pound, nine
ounce salmon caught the last Saturday of the derby for some
last-minute heroics. It was weighed in at Wilson after catching
the fish on the Niagara Bar and Hay was the one who collected
the check at the awards ceremony at Sodus Bay on May 10, but
it will be split three ways in the end.
The 2015 Summer Lake Ontario Counties Trout and
Salmon Derby is now over – held June 13 to July 26 – and it
was a team of three veteran anglers (literally) that produced the
Grand Prize catch while fishing out of Olcott in Niagara County
on July 17.
John Monroe of Rochester was fishing with Mark Eisenbach of Victor and Al Fernaays of Fairport during the Curt
Meddaugh Memorial fishing contest being run by the Lake
Ontario Trout and Salmon Assn. on July 17 for club members
(www.lotsa.org).

“We were fishing the Niagara Bar that Saturday morning
around 7:30 am when the fish hit,” said the retired UPS worker,
used to carrying around big packages. This one screamed out
over 400 feet of line like it was nothing and the fight was on. The
bait of choice was a white and green dot spin doctor and a ProAm fly, using a diver set at 125 feet back on a No. 2 setting. They
were fishing out of Keeler’s 19-foot Triumph boat named “Dirty
Hooker.” It took Hay a half hour to bring the fish in.
As far as credit, they pointed a finger at the Lake Ontario
Trout and Salmon Association’s Salmon School held during the
Greater Niagara Fishing and Outdoor Expo last January. They
attended the school and were so impressed with the area and the
school that they decided to fish on the Niagara Bar and give it a
go. The rest is history. “We love the Niagara Bar,” said Hay as he
accepted the cash and the trophy.
First place in the salmon division was Lee Beaton of
Clifton Springs with a 24 pound Niagara Bar king. He was fishing with Jim Skolny of Manchester and Gary Erb of Williamson
out of Skolny’s 22-foot Wellcraft named “Dodger,” which he
announced that it was for sale at the awards ceremony. “Fishing
was awesome all week for us and this is the biggest spring salmon
that I’ve ever caught,” said Beaton. They were using a Frostbite
pattern Michigan Stinger spoon on a downrigger, 55 feet down
over 70 feet of water when the bruiser hit. It took him about 20
minutes to bring it in before they headed to the weigh station
at Youngstown Harbor. “It was chaos when the fish hit and I’m
glad we were able to bring the big king to the boat.” Their catch
earned them $2,500.
Second place in the Salmon Division and the early leader
in the derby was Nicholas Glosser of Amherst while fishing with
Team Thrillseeker and Capt. Vince Pierleoni of Newfane. Also on
board were Stephanie Pierleoni and Tanner Niezgoda of Newfane. Fishing out of Pierleoni’s 35-foot Viking “Thrillseeker 2”
in the first King of the Lake Tournament of the Year out of St.
Catharines, Ontario, the team ran to the U.S. side of the Niagara Bar, starting first in the shallows with stickbaits off flat
lines on planer boards. They used the same program with a Live
Target black and white stickbait on the drop off to take the big
23 pound, 14 ounce king – the only fish that they caught on the
surface like that over 70 feet of water. It was still worth $1,500
in prize money. Glosser took 20 minutes to reel the fish in, help-

Eleven year old Logan Dubuque of Hagerstown, MD won the the

ing them to place third in the tournament as well. Of the top 21
salmon in the derby, 17 were caught out of Niagara County.
First place lake trout was Casey Prisco of Matamoras,
Pennsylvania with a 24 pound, one ounce fork tail taken out in
front of Wilson. The amazing thing for the “Dirty Goose” team
that consisted of Emily Prisco, Kevin Keller and Justin Borowitz
was that they were salmon fishing, focusing on the spring king
bite. “We hauled in over 150 salmon for the week but nothing
big enough to make the board,” said Prisco, who runs a 30-foot
Pursuit Offshore. “The same program produced 250 lake trout
during the week including the divisional winner.” The laker was
worth $1,200. It was caught on a green Dirty Goose spoon, something Prisco helped develop with Finger Lakes Tackle.
The team also took an 11th place lake trout when Rob

Ripka of Pulaski was on board mid-week. The spoon was an
orange Dirty Goose spoon. “Fishing was great this week,” said
Prisco. “We put our time in. We fished 98 hours this week.” It
was the biggest lake trout that he’s ever caught. It came off a
downrigger, 60 feet down over 140 feet of water.
Second place lake trout was a 23 pound, six ounces fish
reeled in by Charlie Eulitt of Oak Harbor, Ohio while fishing out
of Olcott. Fishing out of his 30-foot Baha “Good Time Charlie”
east of Olcott, they hooked into the runner-up money winner 65
feet down over 110 feet of water off the Microwave Tower around
10:30 am. It was the biggest lake trout of his life. He was fishing
with Chris Roff of Erie, Pennsylvania. The lucky lure was a UV
Michigan Stinger magnum blue dolphin spoon, caught off the rigger.
Top youth lake trout angler was Jacob Mehegan of Wolcott with a 20 pound, 8 ounce fish caught off Oswego while fishing
with his dad, Jim, and Capt. Andy Grisenthwaite of Liverpool
with Broad Horizons Charters. It was the biggest lake trout ever
for the 10 year old fifth grader. “I don’t know how long it took
me to bring it in but I remember it tired me out.” Dad said it was
about 20 minutes.
Big brown trout was a 16 pound, 10 ounce fish taken by
Mike Wichtowski of Rochester taken near Devil’s Nose near
Sandy Creek. He was fishing with Jeff Coyle of Hamlin aboard
his 20-foot Crestliner named “Reel Peace.” “We were in 70 feet
of water in front of Devil’s Nose using a flasher-fly behind our
wire diver 85-feet back on a No. 3 setting when the fish hit,” said
Wichtowski, who won the brown trout division four years ago. “I
thought it was a king it hit so hard.” He won $1,200 cash for the
trophy fish.
Second and third place brown trout were connected with
father and son. Arin Keegan of Sackets Harbor was fishing with
Peter Priest of Watertown off Point Peninsula near Chaumont
Bay when they hit a big 15 pound, six ounce brown. They motored in to weigh their catch at Henchen Marine and pick up
Arin’s dad, John. That’s when the father caught a 13 pound,
three ounce brown that ended up in third place. On the same trip,
they also caught a 19th place walleye that Priest weighed in. The
second place fish was caught on a Michigan Stinger spoon 150

39th Annual Greater Niagara Fish Odyssey
Derby Set for August 22-30
The Greater Niagara Fish Odyssey Derby – the derby
formally known as the “Fall Classic” – will be holding its 39th
Annual contest August 22-30, 2015. In what started out as the
Niagara County Fishing Derby, this competition is now opened
to three counties (Niagara, Erie and Orleans) in an attempt to
encourage more involvement in this family-oriented event. With
a big focus on the Junior Division, this move will give the kids
more opportunity to wet a line because of the fact that they are
out of school.
With the huge Lake Ontario Counties (LOC) Trout and
Salmon Fall Derby kicking off on Aug. 21, this will give contesthungry anglers an appetizer for the big bucks. While most everything is the same (except that charter captains and mates are
exempt from purchasing a ticket if they aren’t fishing the derby
themselves for prizes), there are a few new twists that could land
you a few extra dollars. First, a daily $100 prize for the biggest
salmon caught each day – taking a page out of the LOC event – is
being offered August 22-29. Second, the Lake Ontario Trout and
Salmon Association (LOTSA) is back again with a special $500
cash prize for the largest salmon caught by a LOTSA member
while competing in the derby. In addition to that, the witness
(which also has to be a LOTSA member) will also receive a check
for $200. When you register for the Fish Odyssey, toss in another
$10 for your LOTSA membership and you’ll be considered registered in that fine organization. You can also register online at
www.lotsa.org.
Species categories for the adults include salmon, smallmouth bass, walleye, carp, lake trout and brown/rainbow trout.
For the kids 15 years and under, categories will be salmon, trout,
bass, walleye, carp and panfish. Entry fee will stay the same at
$20 for the adults; free for the kids. A one day pass will also be
available for $10. It doesn’t get any easier than that. Kids can

Every year the derby remembers someone we lost previously that meant a lot to the fishery and this year it’s Ken
Sprenger of North Tonawanda who passed on in 2014. He was on
the original Derby Board, Niagara County Fisheries Board and
an outdoor writer in area papers. We are sad to see Ken go, but
his memory will live on in the Fish Odyssey. Once again, The Primate Sanctuary (thanks to Carmen and Christie Presti) will be
donating a new bike that will be drawn at the awards ceremony
for every kid that’s registered in the fun contest. Get those kids

LOC Derby News - Fall 2015
Summer Derby Continued from page 1
They are all veteran anglers with Eisenbach the senior
member as far as fishing derbies are concerned – fishing since the
first year of the first ESLO Derby back in 1976. The angling trio
are also service veterans – Monroe formerly with the Marines;
Eisenbach with the Navy; Fernaays with the Army. “It was a
team effort all the way around,” said Monroe, a retired airlines
pilot, at the awards ceremony in Sodus Point on July 26. “We
fished as a team and we should be recognized as a team. We will
split the $11,500 in winnings three ways.” The check included a
$500 prize from LOTSA for the biggest salmon caught by a club
member.
Using a spin doctor flasher and A-Tom-Mik green and
blue fly 80 feet down over 170 feet of water, the fish hit on the
downrigger and didn’t feel like much at first – until it decided
to take off nearly 400 feet of line without stopping. “It was the
strongest run I’ve ever felt on a rod! Fortunately it expended
most of its energy.”
Twenty five minutes later Monroe was holding his biggest
salmon ever, a 28 pound, 8 ounce fish – the largest fish he’s ever
weighed in during a derby. They were fishing out of Eisenbach’s
21-foot ThunderJet boat named “Black Jaw” and weighed their
catch at The Slippery Sinker in Olcott. “It was a miracle we were
able to get the fish into the boat,” said Monroe. “After the salmon
tangled up all of the other lines, we were able to finally get it up
next to the boat to net it. When Al reached for it, the hook was
caught on the inside of the net but the fish was on the outside! How we managed to beat the odds is beyond us. I guess it
was meant to be! And I’m really happy for Mark. It shows that if
you stick with something long enough you can be successful.”
In the Salmon Division it was Dave Colvin of Springwater
fishing out of Point Breeze in Orleans County to win the category
with a 28 pound, 5 ounce king. He was fishing in the King of the
Oak contest on July 18 with Matt Briggs and his son Ben from
Dansville aboard Matt’s 26.5 foot Penn Yan named “Reel Issues.” Also on board was Dave’s cousin, Jason Colvin of Victor
and Joe Dallas of Dansville. They hit the big king 12 miles to the
east of the Oak, using a 400-foot copper line over 220 feet of water. “I’m usually the driver,” said Colvin, “but I needed to stretch
my legs. The rod went off and I grabbed it. It’s my biggest king
ever and I will be getting it mounted.” It took him 35 minutes to
bring the fish to the boat.

weighed in at Narby’s in Oak Orchard.
Dave was fishing aboard the “Reel Issues” with Mathew Briggs
(left) and caught the fish on copper line and cut bait and won first
place in the Salmon Division in the Summer LOC Derby.
Second place salmon was a 27 pound, 15 ounce king reeled
in by Eric Rupprecht of Rochester while fishing with Steve Weiner of Fairport aboard Steve’s 19-foot Lund named “Triple S.”
Fishing out of Braddocks Bay on July 18, they had been targeting
browns early in the morning when they switched over to salmon. They were using a silver and black NBK Michigan Stinger
spoon 50 feet down over 110 feet of water at 9:45 am when the
salmon hit. “We were classmates at Fairport High School,” said
Rupprecht, “and we tried to get together fishing several times
over the years. We finally made that happen and it produced this
winning fish.”
Top Youth salmon was a 25 pound, four ounce king
checked in by Logan DuBuque of Hagerstown, Maryland. He was
using a spin doctor and fly while fishing out of Port Ontario on
July 19 aboard “Dapper Dan.”
First place lake trout was John Stanton III of Rochester
with a 23 pound, 14 ounce fish caught east of Sandy Creek. He
was using a Hammerhead attractor named crystalline watermelon with a homemade spin-n-glo that had been put together by
Brian Gambell of Hilton. They were using a downrigger on the
bottom of 125 feet of water.

LOC Derby News - Fall 2015
Lake Ontario Pro-Am Salmon
Team Tournament Series
And then there were two … counties left in the Series.
The Niagara tournament started off 31 years ago, the brainchild of Lowrance Electronics and the origin of the Great Lakes
Salmon Team Tournaments. It is still running strong, with Oswego jumping on board 21 years ago. To add to the excitement,
Niagara added a second event and created a special Niagara
Cup for the two Western Basin tournaments for its 30th Annual
celebration.
Niagara County, running out of the ports of Wilson and
Olcott, held one event May 30-31 and a second one June 6-7 –
the second year in a row that two back-to-back tournaments
were held. Weather played a huge role in the fishing action as a
hard northeast wind hampered both weekends. The first weekend saw only one day of fishing for the participating teams. In
the end, it was the Thrillseeker squad led by Capt. Vince Pierleoni of Newfane winning the Classic Division (12 fish) in the
one day contest. Winner of the Trophy Division (best 5 fish) was
Capt. Rich Hajecki and his Yankee Troller team out of Rochester, NY.
Pierleoni and team are a bit intimidating when it comes
to fishing tournaments. While they have fished every single ProAm event on the lake since its inception (including sanctioned
events that have fallen by the wayside in Point Breeze, Rochester and Sodus Bay), they have amassed an impressive seven wins
in Niagara and 14 tournaments overall in the Pro-Am series
alone. They have also won several lakewide cups for their mantel, symbolizing a model of consistency. That doesn’t even come
close to scratching the surface of top 10 finishes.
“We knew that catching a limit was going to make the
difference for being in the money,” said Pierleoni. “We fished
where most of the other boats were and used Dreamweaver
spoons to put us over the top, catching our limit of salmon and
trout.”
Enter David of David and Goliath fame. Okay, maybe
his name was Tony Chatt and his team was Five More Minutes.
Chatt’s squad was mostly fishing the amateur divisions that last
several years and this year opted to fish with the big boys – the
giants of the Lake Ontario fishing industry. His slingshot was
natural-colored spoons of black-silver, blue-silver and greensilver … once he found an area that was holding fish – and
he stayed on them until he caught as many fish as he possibly
could.
The water was all messed up again from the easterly
winds of the week. In fact, the morning of the first day in that
second weekend was a delay of four hours because of a northeast blow. They found fish to the east and worked them over as
best he could over 400 feet of water. “The fish were up high and
once we found them we tried to stay on them the best we could,”
said Chatt. “We caught 11 on Saturday and 12 on Sunday for a
limit. It was enough to give us the win for the weekend and tie
Thrillseeker for the Classic West Cup (two tournments combined).
In the Trophy Division, it was Oh Baby led by Matt
Laclair of West Chazy, NY winning the title – an encore from his
Wilson Harbor Invitiational win a few weeks before. In combining both weekends, though, Yankee Troller had the edge for the
West Trophy Cup. Big fish for both weekends was a 21 pound
king salmon reeled in by the Tough Duty team led by Capt. Tim
Sylvester. All told for the two weekends, more than $100,000 in
cash and prizes were handed out to Niagara’s tournament competitors.
Chatt and his Five More Minutes team wasn’t finished
yet, though. There was one more event in Oswego July 11-12.
They made the executive decision at that last minute to focus on
salmon rather than brown trout. That decision resulted in the
team’s first Professional win in Oswego and their first overall
Lake Ontario Challenge Cup utilizing a unique scoring system
involving the three Pro-Am events. “David” took home the cup!

feet back behind boards over 25 feet of water; the third place was
caught on a Thunderstick using the same program. It was Arin’s
birthday at the awards ceremony, a nice present for the Jefferson
County angler.
Big walleye for the derby was hauled in by Travis Parker
of Glen Park, a 12 pound, 13 ounce fish taken near Point Peninsula near the Black River. He was fishing with Skip LaVancha of
Dexter and Paul Erdner of Watertown on opening weekend out of
Erdner’s 18-foot Polarcraft. Placing a perch-colored Husky Jerk
130 feet back behind the planer boards did the trick for them. It
was 9 am and they were over 26 feet of water. The reason they
picked this particular spot was because they had caught a big
walleye there last fall and they had wished for a similar one. That
wish came true, resulting in Parker’s biggest walleye ever and
earning a check for $1,200.
Second place walleye went to Gene Bolton of Watertown
with an 11 pound, five ounce fish he took in the Henderson Har-
bor area on a Husky Jerk off a board. He moved into second
place when the previous second place angler failed to show at the
awards night.
Top youth was 13 year old Jared Difrancesco of Baldwinsville. His 10 pound walleye, the biggest he’s ever caught in his life,
placed in 16th overall. It came from Point Peninsula while fishing with his dad, Peter, Frank Spina of Solvay and Tony Chatt of
West Monroe. Peter also reeled in a 10 pound, nine ounce ‘eye to
take 9th place overall. The “secret” bait was a black and chrome
Bomber stickbait for both fish.

Sure Strike Wins Sodus Pro-Am
By Chris “Slash” Kenyon
It was blistery hot day…nothing unusual for the annual fishing
contest dubbed the Sodus Pro-Am. That has been the weather
pattern for the past 12 years. The good news for the competing
teams for the 2015 event was there were no waves challenging the
run to the finish line. It was a flat Lake Ontario for the July 18-19
tourney. Forty-seven teams were fishing the two day event and
the majority of the teams waited until the last minute before entering the Sodus Bay harbor. Teams are required to be between
the pier heads at exactly 2 pm. If you miss that deadline you are

disqualified for the day of fishing. How competitive is it?
Dave Antenori and his Screamer Team stopped near the finish
line with three minutes remaining. Antenori dropped a rigger ball
down and tried for the last fish of the day. It didn’t work, however the team captain said: “I still had time…you never know.”

The Screamer Team did manage to pull-out an impressive
6th place in the Sodus Pro-Am, only fifty points behind the leader
Team Sure Strike. Total scores are calculated by using 10 points
per fish and one point per pound.
GREAT FOR: SALMON,
None of the teams could catch Captain Randy Calus and
STEELHEAD, WALLEYE, PIKE, MUSKIE
his Sure Strike Team. Calus and team came to the weigh-in tent
on the first day with a box of browns… one hefty trout that regisSpecial

“The bottom line in our plan was to go for browns,” Calus

said. The strong wind on Wednesday forced the kings to scatter
and I knew I needed 12 fish to compete.”
The Sure Strike Team grabbed a couple of lake trout in
155 feet of water and then worked the shoreline between Pultneyville and the Ginna Power Plant in Ontario, Wayne County.
“We had our full box in two hours on the first day. We had our
team meeting (Bruce Stenglein, Ken Biemiller, Tom Widell and
Scott Grandjean) Saturday night and decided to continue the
brown trout program during Sunday’s final day.”
It only took Calus and team three hours to box-out and
they grabbed the top score on Sunday, winning the two day tournament with a total score of 479.10 points.
Calus complimented the tournament officials for a smooth
running event and added that “Sodus Bay is a great port to fish.”
Tony Chatt and his 5 Minutes More Team took first place in the
Amateur Division with a two day score of 265.20 points.
Chatt, from West Monroe, NY, was coming off a first place
win in the Oswego Pro-Am and the Lake Ontario Challenge Cup
titl. However, the captain didn’t travel east back to Oswego for
his brown trout catch. “We went west to the Ginna Plant and
fished two hours catching some kings and a steelhead,” Chatt said
during the weigh-in at Sodus Point. “Then we fished the shoreline
near Pultneyville. We picked-up a bunch of nice browns.”
On day two Chatt and team used the same plan. “We had
a full box of browns and one Atlantic Salmon,” Chatt said. “We

hook and line and retrieved and brought to net by rod and reel in a legal
manner as designated by New York State DEC or Province of Ontario
MNR. Derby waters are limited to those where lake regulations are in
effect. Niagar River boundaries are the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge for
shore anglers and Devils Hole for boat Anglers. Tributary and special
regulation waters are excluded.
2. Must officially register by 7:00 A.M. on the day you wish to fish and prior
to fishing and be in possession of his/her registration card at all times and
present the card to any official Derby personnel upon request.
3. Anyone between the ages of 10 and 16 at the time of registration will
be registered as a youth. Minimum age for entry into any LOC Derby
is 10. Anyone 16 or older must register as an adult. All registrants
compete for the same divisional prizes.
4. Agrees to abide by the LOC Official Rules and Regulations and agrees
that failure to comply with any of the rules will result in automatic
disqualification, forfeiture of all prizes, recognition as a prize winner and
the right to enter any future LOC Derby. LOC Derby reserves the right to
deny participation in a LOC Derby to anyone.
5. Anyone disqualified in another Lake Ontario fishing Derby or tournament
such as, but not limited to, the Lake Ontario Pro-Am, Niagara County Fish
Odyssey, Orleans County Derby, or Wayne County Derby will be ineligible
for any prize consideration in and LOC Derby.
6. Agrees that all persons aboard the same boat (private or charter) must
be registered in the Derby, including captain and mate. In the event that
there are any persons on board the boat who are not registered (whether
they are fishing or not), all fish caught during that particular outing may
not be offered or considered for any prizes. A supporting affidavit may be
required by all registered contestants aboard the same boat, affirming the
integrity of the catch and also that no unregistered person was aboard the
boat. EXCEPTION: Youths under the age of 10 are allowed on the
boat or charter as observers only! Numbers of rods and fish limits
are based solely on the number of registered participants.
7. Must be fishing with at least (1) other LOC Derby registered participant
(minimum of two (2) persons per boat). In the case of stream, pier, shore
fishing, etc. the witness must be in the immediate company of the person
who caught the fish. When entering their fish, must be accompanied by
their witness who signs an affidavit which corroborates the method, time
and location of the catch, which will not be official until signed by the
Weigh Master. The minimum age of a witness is 10 years old.
8. Official weigh-in will not take place until the entrant and their accompanying
witnesses present their official registration cards to the Weigh Master in
charge.
9. Agrees that each contestant who offers a prize winning fish and all
registered affirming witnesses will be subject to a polygraph (lie detector)
or voice stress test if so specified by the Derby Rules Committee. And
further agrees that failure to pass the test will result in disqualification.
Disqualification will result if an entrant refuses a polygraph or is determined
to be unfit for a polygraph due to drug or alcohol consumption. The official
LOC polygraphist shall make this determination. Polygraph tests will be
administered on the day of the awards ceremony.
10. Agrees that the Weigh Master must weigh in all fish entered in the LOC
Derby at an official LOC Weigh Station on the day caught. Agrees to these
weigh station hours for the Fall Derby. August 21st - Sept 6th, 9:00 a.m.
to 8 p.m. Sept 7th, 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Fall Derby Ends at 1:00 PM on
September 7th.
11. Must enter the fish whole, not gaffed, gutted or snagged and winners
will be determined by the weight of the fish only. Any fish containing
any foreign materials (including but not limited to water, ice, and
weights) will disqualify that fish from consideration for any prize.
Black salmon will not be eligible for entry in this Derby. Fish will be
examined for gill net marks, bleached or slimy gills, hook and/or gaff
marks, fin rot or fungus, freezer burn, clouded eyes, unresponsive
flesh – any of which can disqualify the fish.
12. Agrees that the Weigh Master prior to weighing will remove all bait fish
or ice visible in the mouth of any fish.
13. Agrees that fish weight is determined by full ounce only. No fractions
of an ounce will be recorded. Partial ounce weights will be rounded
down in all instances.
14. Agrees to submit, if required by a Derby official, their fish for
microscopic tissue examination, internal examination, entering the
cavity through an incision or through the use of a probe and not limited
to temperature probes.
15. Agrees that LOC entrant who enters the prize winning fish will be
the sole recipient of cash or merchandise awards. Dividing of prizes
will be handled by entrant, NOT the LOC Derby Committee. A prior
written agreement as to the division of prizes is recommended.
16. Agrees that all trout must weigh a minimum of ten (10) pounds and
salmon must weigh a minimum of twenty (20) pounds for entry in
the Spring and Summer Derbies. Minimum weight for Walleye in
the Spring Derby is (8) eight pounds. Lake Trout must be at least 30
inches long. Only initial measurement by Weigh Master is valid due to
imminent shrinkage. For the Fall Derby trout must weigh a minimum
of ten (10) pounds and Salmon twenty-five (25) pounds.
17. Agrees that all fish in contention, as determined by the sole discretion
of Derby officials, are property of the Derby until released by a Derby
official. All weighed fish must be gill punched by the Weigh master. It
is the sole responsibility of the entrant to retain any fish submitted
for prize consideration until the Derby results are declared official.
18. Is entitled to only one division cash prize. No participant may win
more than one of the division prizes, although contestants may enter
more than one fish. If the succeeding fish is larger, the smaller of the
fish with least weight will be withdrawn.
19. Agrees to submit all disputes to a designated Derby official within
eight hours after the fish is entered, and agrees that all disputes will
be submitted to the Derby Rules Committee, whose decision will be
final. The Derby Rules Committee shall consist of Derby Organizers.
20. Agrees that the decision of the judges will be final and not reviewable
in any form. In the event of a tie, the person who enters the first fish
according to the date and time recorded on the fish entry form will be the
winner. The second or subsequent fish, entered at the same weight, will
assume the next lowest division position, and so on until all positions
are filled. If two or more fish of identical weight should be entered on
the same date and time, a toss of the coin will determine the winner
and the loser will assume the next lower position in the division.
21. Agrees that award recipients are responsible for payment of all taxes
on prizes $600 and more. Refusal to submit proper Social Security
information will result in disqualification.
22. Agrees that the LOC Derby Employees and their families may enter
and fish in the Derby, but are not eligible for prizes.
23. Agrees to hold the Derby officials, sponsors, their agents, servants and/
or employees, harmless from any liability of any nature and kind for
injuries and/or damages suffered by the entrant during the period that
the Derby is held.
24. Agrees to use good judgment in regard to existing and projected
weather conditions. Listen to and heed the warnings of the U.S. Coast
Guard and local weather reports, before and during each day’s fishing
and, not to place in jeopardy themselves or others on the boat during
the Derby. To have personal floatation devices aboard and to operate
under Coast Guard regulations.

5 More Minutes Wins Oswego Pro-Am &
OSWEGO COUNTY
Challenge Cup for Lake Pro-Ams
The final Lake Ontario Pro-Am that is part of the Lakewide Challenge Cup was held in Oswego County July 11-12. In
the end, it as the Five More Minutes team led by Tony Chatt of
West Monroe, NY who walked away with not only the Professional Division title for the two day Oswego Tournament, but also
with the prestigious Lake Ontario Challenge Cup combining the
two Niagara contests with the Oswego tourney.
After tying Capt. Vince Pierleoni’s Team Thrillseeker
squad for Niagara’s West Cup – the first time there has ever been
a tie – the Five More Minutes anglers completed their lakewide
cup quest by winning the 21st Annual Oswego County Pro-Am. The tournament win (their first in Oswego) was enough
to put them over the top and beat Pierleoni (from Newfane and
chartering out of Olcott) and company. Thrillseeker finished
third in the tournament and second in the Cup points race.
“We won at Oswego in 2010 in the amateur division,” said
Chatt at the awards ceremony. “Last year we did fish the Amateur Division in Oswego because I could not find a 4th person for
the team. Two years ago we fished pro. We finally won the professional division here!”
Amateur Division winner in Oswego was the Goin’ Deep
team led by Brian Kegg.

LOC Derby News - Fall 2015
Summer Derby Continued from page 6
Also on board was Keith Tessier of Hilton. Gambell’s
name should sound familiar to LOC Derby contestants. He won
the lake trout division in 2005 and 2012 in the fall with some
impressive fish. It was the biggest lake trout that Stanton had
ever caught and the highest he’s ever place in the derby. Gambell
fininished in 14th place with a 19 pound, 10 ounce laker.
Second place lake trout was a 23 pound fish hauled in
by Richard Driscoll of Victor, while fishing with his son, Christopher. Lure of choice was a white crinkle A-Tom-Mik fly on a
white Pro-Chip flasher. They were fishing out of their 22-foot
Wellcraft named “Lined Out.” It was Richard’s biggest laker
ever, coming from 130-foot of water on the bottom 9 miles east of
Irondequoit Bay. Christopher ended up in 8th place in the lake
trout division with a 21 pound, three ounce fish caught a few days
later.
Top Youth lake trout was a 19 pound one ounce fish
caught by Noah Patton of Glen Park on a Spin-N-Glo out of Henderson Harbor on July 25 while fishing aboard “Ramblin’ Rose.”
Top steelhead was caught by Brian Gregson of Gasport with a
16 pound, 9 ounce fish he caught while fishing the LOTSA King
Salmon Club Tournament on July 18. He was using a downrigger
40 feet down over 368 feet of water straight out from Olcott with
a Sting Ray NBK spoon. After the fish hit, they thought they had
a mid-sized king – until they saw the white mouth. Then they got
excited! It only took them about six minutes to reel the fish in.
He was fishing with his wife, Jill and brother Adam. It was the
biggest steelhead that they have ever caught on the boat before –
coming at a great time.
Second place steelhead was a 15 pound, 15 ounce chrome
taken by David Bonnell of Rochester. He was fishing with Rich
Steubing of Brockport (who owns the boat, a 22.5-foot Thompson
named “Live Action”), Sarah Lauth of Hamlin, Tim Skript of
Rochester and Sheila Frank of Greece. They caught the fish July
12 at 7 am while fishing east of Sandy Creek. It was a green and
black Michigan Stinger spoon that did the trick, 40 feet down
over 120 feet of water on a downrigger. It was the biggest steelhead for all involved.
Top Youth Steelhead was a 12 pound, 7 ounce fish outfought by 10 year old Morgan Felluca of Hilton. She was fishing
with her dad, Capt. Jerry Felluca; her uncle, Larry Lapa; and
cousin Chad Lapa. They were fishing in the Sandy Creek Shootout on July 25, catching the fish around 1 pm on cut bait. She is a
fifth grader at St. Kateri in Irondequoit. The boat was “Runnin’
Rebel,” a 26-foot Pro Hunter.
First place brown trout was a 20 pound, four ounce fish
caught by Tom Duyssen of Ontario, NY while fishing east of Pultneyville with a black and purple Michigan Stinger spoon. He was
fishing with Mike Barringer and Chris Chimenti (both of Ontario, NY) aboard his 24-foot Trophy Bayliner named “Stripinline.”
They were fishing in the Wayne County Pro-Am in the Amateur
Division east of Pultneyville, 10 feet down over 38 feet of water
with their downrigger.
Second place brown trout went to Tom Widell of Webster
with an 18 pound, 3 ounce brownie. The captain of Reel Action
Charters was fishing with another captain, Randy Calas of Webster aboard his 10 Meter Trojan called “Sure Strike.” They, too,
were fishing the Wayne County Pro-Am and this fish came off a
100 foot copper line off a planer board over 45 feet of water at
8:30 am. It was Widell’s biggest brown personally. Also on board
were Bruce Stenglein of Webster; Ken Biemiller of Penfield; and
Scott Grandjean of Henderson. They placed first in the Professional Division of the Wayne County Pro-Am event, fishing near
the power plant to the west.
Youth brown trout winner was Joshua Hauman of Penfield with a 13 pound, five ounce fish caught out of Hughes Marina in Williamson. He was using a Northern King 28 spoon to take
his biggest brown ever on July 2, fishing out of “FLX Troller.”
For a complete list of LOC Summer
Derby winners, see page 18
Morgan Felluca (center)won the youth award in the steelhead division with a 12 lb 7 oz fish caught while fishing with her
father Captain Jerry Felluca (right) aboard the Runnin Rebel.
Morgan finished 11th in the rainbow/steelhead division.
Joseph Dolan (left) was also aboard and landed a 25 lb 12
oz King that put him on the leaderboard in 14th place. Great day
on the lake!
A great day was had fishing aboard the Escape on June
20th. John Stanton III (Top Left) of Rochester, NY won the Lake
Trout Division and $1250 with a 23 lb 14 oz beauty.
Top right is Keith Tessier of Hilton NY with a 17 lb 15 oz
Lake trout and in the foreground is Brian Gambell of Hilton,
NY with a 19 lb 10 oz Lake trout that finished 14th. All fish were
weighed in at Narby’s in Oak Orchard.
Jeffrey Kimball of Oriskany Falls NY weighed in the 3rd place
in the Brown Division with a 17 lbs 13 oz male weighed in at
Larry’s Oswego Salmon Shop. Jeff caught his fish on a Stinger
spoon while fishing aboard the Missfitt.
