What does ergonomic
multi-width system actually mean?
Space becomes free space.
What might be too wide for some, is probably too narrow for others.
However, as you are at work most of the day, your feet should also feel
comfortable the whole day long. This unique MONDOPOINT system
offers you shoes where you not only choose the length but also the
individual width, because no foot is like the other.

Feet are as individual as people. Feet not only differ in length but
also in width. This problem has been a matter of research several
times and the results show that often shoes are worn which do not
fit properly:
• the shoe length fits the foot length of about 25 % of the wearers only
• about 70 % of the wearers buy shoes that are too large
• about 5 % of the wearers wear shoes that are too small

If the wearer is not offered different widths, he wears shoes that
are either too large or too small in Sizes. Shoes that do not fit
properly lead to accidents when in action at the scene, and they have
a considerable share in the accident frequency rates. So, to provide
the foot with a proper fitting shoe, the Sizes gradation in length
alone is not enough. This is why BALTES® manufactures its safety
shoes on specially-developed true-fitting lasts in accordance with the
MONDOPOINT multi-width system. This ergonomic measuring system
covers a largest possible part of individual foot shapes.

Multi-WidtH sYstEM
BALTES® - TruE-FiTTing LASTS
The last is a moulding made of plastic used to make a shoe. The shoe
obtains its final shape through the last. The last is a simplified copy
of a foot and responsible for the Sizes. The BALTES® true-fitting lasts
were developed in cooperation with orthopaedic specialists and experts in the last industry. These lasts take into account the anatomy of
the foot and can thus guarantee an ideal Sizes and foot health.

The BALTES® lasts cover all foot sizes (length, width, height, girth).
The last is then carefully matched to the exterior shape of the foot.
A BALTES® shoe last provides the foot with sufficient support and, at
the same time, enough room in the ball and toe areas.
To guarantee an optimum Sizes for the entire diversity of different
feet, BALTES® offers the mOndOpOinT multi-width system with truefitting lasts in up to 7 different widths. That is how one achieves a
perfect individual Sizes.

The Outlast®-System
THIS IS HOW Outlast® Hydroactive WORKS
With OUTLAST®, an innovative technology is finding its way
into daily life. It was originally developed for highly specialised
and extreme applications of NASA in space. There, OUTLAST®
provided the astronauts more protection and comfort during their
explorations where they were exposed
to extreme temperature fluctuations
between bitter cold and blazing heat.
By enhancing its fabric technology,
OUTLAST® is today the leader in products
that increase comfort with thermoregulating properties.
The OUTLAST® fabric consists of millions of microcapsules, so-called
ThermoculesTM, which are specially positioned and embedded in the
high-tech lining. About one thousand pieces fit on one pinhead.

OUTLAST® materials reduce temperature fluctuations around the foot. Through the
additional finish with HydroActive, the moisture is drawn away from the foot, keeping it
dryer. This minimizes discomfort, irritability,
tiredness and general indisposition.

Traditional insulation materials preserve the heat by closing in the
warm air. In comparison, the innovative technology of OUTLAST®
offers an active and constant comfort-management process that
absorbs the body heat through the micro-thermal material, stores
and distributes it and then releases it again. Thermodynamic laws
show how and why OUTLAST® must function. Surplus body heat is
absorbed and the cooler OUTLAST® material is “charged”.
In order to achieve a thermal balance (zone of ideal temperature),
the warmth is distributed within the OUTLAST® lining.
If the body temperature is lower than the temperature of the
OUTLAST® layer, the warmth circulates back to the foot to maintain
the thermal balance.

compromise. You can rely on BALTES® safety shoes with SYMPATEX®
High2Out – without compromise.
Together with the sealed seams through the special SYMPATEX®
tape, the poreless membrane keeps absolutely tight.
Not only water but also liquids with little surface tension, like e.g.
petrol or oil are kept from penetrating. Bacteria, viruses or many
kinds of chemicals have no chance, either, to penetrate the membrane.

Shoes with SYMPATEX® are tough on the outside, but extremely
comfortable. The poreless, hydrophilic membrane transports the
water vapour to the exterior in a physical-chemical process.
SYMPATEX® High2Out also gives climatic comfort. With the
SYMPATEX® High2Out membrane system, the drops of sweat do not
roll of the lining, as has been the case so far, but are absorbed and
spread extensively in the lining. The same amount of liquid can evaporate more quickly to the outside from a large area than from
a small one.
When doing heavy duty, SYMPATEX® High2Out transports the sweat
away quickly from the foot, keeping it dry. This clearly reduces the
risk of dermatological injuries, like blisters, etc.
PTFE-free: Unlike many other membranes, the Sympatex membrane
is free from PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene).
PTFE has been increasingly criticised in recent years as the production
process for PTFE uses fluorides which are suspected of being harmful
to health and even causing cancer.

Can a shoe be waterproof,
breathable and
temperature-regulating
at the same time?
The BOS system is a new
definition of comfort.
When you wear shoes, you want your feet to always stay dry. On the one
hand, moisture should not penetrate from the outside and, on the other hand,
you would like to keep the best possible climate inside your shoes. Optimum
temperature regulation is only possible through the BOS system.

With the BOS system, footwear with the best possible technical finish is offered for the first time by uniting the three outstanding brands
BALTES®, OUTLAST® and SYMPATEX®.
In a technologically matured BALTES® shoe, the BOS system unites a new combination lining made of a temperature-regulating
OUTLAST® lining and a waterproof and breathable SYMPATEX® membrane.
OUTLAST® has an effect on the microclimate of the skin
OUTLAST® is a so-called Phase-Change-Material (PCM) that is able to
absorb and store surplus body heat, and to release it again when the
body needs it. The result: you sweat and feel the cold less. The
microclimate on the skin is influenced positively, this increases comfort. The effect can be reduced to a common denominator:
not too warm, not too cold – just right.
44% less sweat formation in shoes
The OUTLAST® lining material, therefore, absorbs body heat when
too much of it is produced, and returns the surplus heat when the
body needs it. The agreeable “side effect”: the formation of sweat
is reduced considerably.
SYMPATEX® gives safety
Shoes with the BOS system containing the SYMPATEX® membrane
offer an absolutely safe barrier against the penetration of moisture
from outside. They are 100 % waterproof, and also liquids with little
surface tension, bacteria, viruses or many types of chemicals have
no chance to penetrate the membrane. When it is about one‘s own
safety, one should not accept any compromise.

SYMPATEX® is breathable
SYMPATEX® lets your feet breath. The water vapour that forms in the
shoe is transported reliably to the outside on a chemically-physical
path. The removal of water vapour has a positive effect on the

Why a shoe with microfibre?
Because it is kind to the
skin, breathable, easy to
clean and resilient.
One microfibre is only one-handredth the diameter of a human hair.
Since it has many more fine threads than in other materials, the fibre
surface is much larger as a result of tight weaving. Microfibre shoes
are very light, soft and keep their shape at the same time.

Microfibre material is a blend of very fine and thin fibres.
To get an idea of what it looks like, here is a comparison:
microfibres have only half the diameter of silk threads.
The microfibre is first of all characterised by its very soft structure.
At the same time, it retains its shape very well.
These properties of a microfibre are achieved through tight
weaving, which is necessary due to the fineness of the fibre.
BALTES® microfibre safety shoes are very light and yet robust.
BALTES® plastic toe cap
By incorporating the BALTES® plastic toe caps, which are made of an
innovative composite material, a weight reduction of about 60 g
per pair of shoes is reached compared to those with a steel toe cap.
The BALTES® plastic toe cap conforms to the valid standards DIN EN
ISO 20345 and EN 12568 and is tested with an impact of 200 joules.
The BALTES® plastic toe caps insulate against cold and heat and are
suitable for safety shoes free from metal.

Leather AND DRY BEST®
Leather
Leather is a valuable piece of nature you recognise in the grown
irregularities of its surface: characteristics of genuineness that the
expert values. In its distinctiveness, leather is like a brand item of
nature. You can confidently trample on the natural material leather.
That is what leather is there for. Leather is stretchable enough to
adapt to the individual shape of the foot. The volume of a foot
increases in the course of the day.
And leather does likewise. When they are resting, feet and shoes
return to their normal Sizes. Leather provides a good climate in the
shoe. The foot remains pleasantly cool in the summer. In the winter,
leather protects the foot against the cold and humidity. Leather
lining absorbs foot moisture during wearing and returns it again.

tanneries, and these select partners offer quality products that meet

BALTES® safety shoes are offered with the most modern sole technology. The outsoles are injected with the highest precision onto the
board last through direct inject technology. This type of production

Different variations of outsoles are manufactured at different stations.

BALTES® soles consist of two layers:
• The tread area is composed of a special, non-slip PU or Rubber
outsole. Our well-engineered tread designs protect against slipping

High-quality shoes also need looking after. We can give you some tips and advice on how to protect your shoes from dirt and moisture and make them last longer:
Water & Weatherproofing
care and colour reviving
• New shoes made of smooth or nubuck leather should by all means be treated with a
water-repellent spray (e.g. Gala Aquastop) before wearing. Waterproofed shoes are better
protected against moisture and can be cleaned easily.
• Waterproofing should be repeated regularly, especially during wet weather, to keep
up the effect.

• Very dirty shoes should be cleaned first before actually starting with the shoe care
procedure by using a rough brush (e.g. coconut bristle brush).
• Smooth leather shoes must be regularly polished either with colourless shoe polish or with
polish in a matching colour (e.g. Gala Shoe Polish). After leaving them to dry for a while,
buff the shoes with a soft brush (e.g. horsehair brush) or cloth.
Wet through outside influences
care for nubuck leather
• Never dry shoes near the heater, otherwise the leather will crack.
• Wet shoes should be brought into shape and allowed to dry naturally.
• Shoes stuffed with newspaper dry more quickly.
• Nonetheless, water or snow stains should be treated whilst still moist. Dirt and salt stains
can be washed off with water. Moistening the leather beyond the wet areas and drying it
carefully avoids stains.
• Once the shoe is dry, it is recommendable to waterproof and treat the leather again.
• Sanded leathers like nubuck need brushes and sponges to free their fibres gently from
dust and dirt. Usually, a rubber or brass brush is all that is needed to clean the shoes and
to roughen the fibres of nubuck leather.
• After cleaning, one can protect the nubuck leather with liquid shoe care and restore
the colour.
Wetness through moisture
• Feet sweat every day, so shoes need time to dry after wearing. That is why it is ideal
to have a second pair of shoes to rotate.

Very heavy loads have their continuous effect on feet, the skin of the
feet, joints and spine when walking and standing. For this, BALTES®
offers various types of insoles that bring about an improvement the
wearer can really feel. Comparing pressure distribution measurements with and without insoles has shown that shoes with insoles
clearly reduce the peak pressure. By using BALTES® health insoles,
the tread area of the foot is increased and the pressure is levelled
out. This better load distribution of the entire body weight on the
sole of the foot makes walking much more pleasant, healthier and
more comfortable. Next to relieving the heel zone, there is also relief
in the entire musculoskeletal system, especially in the knee joints and
spine. One also feels an improvement in the toe box compared to
shoes worn without insoles.

PermanentLY Antistatic shoe
BALTES® offers a collection of modern ESD
safety shoes that are suitable for all areas
where people work with electrostatic
discharge sensitive devices. If you work with
high-tech products, you need a special safety
shoe that protects the product. BALTES® ESD safety shoes
are antistatic in the range between 7.5 x 105 and 3.5 x
107 ohm. This prevents electrostatic charging through the
wearer.
Every BALTES® shoe with the PAS sign
is a “Permanently Antistatic Shoe”.
Antistatic shoes should be worn when
it is necessary to reduce an electrostatic
charge by deviating these charges. The danger of igniting e.g. inflammable substances and vapours through
sparks must be ruled out. This also applies when the
danger of an electric shock through an electric appliance
or through live parts cannot be completely ruled out.
Orthopaedic insole supply in
accordance with BGR 191
In the new BGR 191 regulations, it is required that
orthopaedic insoles may only be used in safety shoes
combined with a valid type approval test. This is to
avoid other insoles, which have not been tested, from
being inserted into safety shoes. In
cooperation with the PerpedesRöck
Group, BALTES® offers a typeapproved system of orthopaedic
insoles and safety shoes.
An orthopaedic shoe technician of your choice will be
able to supply you with the right insoles.
Apart from that, we recommend our safety shoes in the
special Sizes 13 and 14 when wearing thick orthopaedic
insoles.Their toe box provides more space for the toes.

In practice, the wearer, who must wear anti-static shoes,
is often confronted with the following questions:
• Which orthopedic insole is anti-static?
• Which insole sold in shops is anti-static?
• What are the consequences of an accident due
to false insoles?
The Problem:
By using insoles that are not supplied by the shoe
manufacturer, the prescribed antistatic protection is
usually lost for shoes. Depending on the danger zone,
this raises the wearer’s risk of injury enormously!
The Innovation:
In its range, BALTES® offers “Permanently Antistatic
Shoes”*. No matter where you buy your insoles, and no
matter whether they are antistatic or not, the BALTES®
shoes that are marked in this catalogue with the PAS
pictograph remain antistatic.
* Note:
The electric resistance of “PAS” shoes can change considerably through bending,
dirt or moisture. In order to achieve sufficient protection against electric shocks,
further measures have to be taken at the place of work in addition to wearing
antistatic shoes to avoid this danger. The shoe should be checked at regular intervals for its electrical resistance. To be on the safe side, a test on location should be
carried out to ensure the protective function for the wearer. We also refer to the
explanations on “Antistatic Shoes” in DIN EN ISO 20345.
