After searching online for
“historical society meeting minutes”, it appears
there are a number of
historical societies that
post the minutes of their
meetings online. It seems
a good way for members/donors to find how
what’s happening with
their support. Check out
www.gilletthistorical.com
and on the Home Page
and click on “MEETING
MINUTES PAGE”.

NEWS FROM THE PAST
Oconto Falls Herald
January 11 1901
From:
wiocgs.org/digitizeoconto
Jacob Spies’ home was the former
Lilac Plantation on St Hwy 22 east of
Gillett.
August Zippel, his son-in-law, donated
the land for Zippel Park to Gillett for
use as a ball grounds and park. The
development of this area became a
major project of the Advancement
Association.
After the ball park was leveled and
completed, Mr. Zipple arrived to see
a game. He was stopped at the gate
and charged an entrance fee. The
next day he showed up with a team of
horses and plowed up the ball field. It
took a great deal of psychology and
skill to mollify Mr. Zippel and get the
park back for the people. To this day
no admission is charged to the park.

and used the first time for the Fireman’s Annual

~ “Name of store across from Catholic Church
(Downtown ) Deeringer . According to Ann
Horick. It was a chicken coop and they sold eggs
and chickens. Then it was converted into living
quarters and they sold groceries also”.
~”Fred Ludeman (Bob and Fred Jr’s Dad) came

boiler at Merry-Go-Round - also corner of Pine

~ “ George Baldwin – Kept his 12 cylinder Lincoln

would come to work in the morning and then take
the car to George’s house. George would take John
to the garage. After work he would come and get

~"..........In 1873 farmers from Shawano and Oconto
counties got together and formed an agricultural
association. The first fair was held at the Rodney
Gillett farm in Oconto County. The fair apparently
was not too successful from the Shawano standpoint, for the following year 15 acres of the John Wians farm (now River Heights) were leased for $50 a
year." - From: “Grandmas Footprints—A History of
Shawano”.
~ “Mom's [Mrs Ernest Henry] mother and father, Mr. and Mrs. M. G. Colson owned the
house and station while my dad worked
there. They lived upstairs in the house, so we
kids would go up there every night via the inside stairway to have Grandpa Colson read
Uncle Wiggly and Old Mother West Wind stories to us before bed. He was an avid reader
and was always going to see what 'new' books
Mrs. Larson had gotten in at the Gillett Public
Library. It was upstairs at the City Hall / Fire
House / Jail. Old Toodles (Otto Helmke)
never had to put any of us in the jail, though. :)
