2016 Furr’s Buffets
State Golf Championships
Silver wins A-4A Girls’ Golf Title
The Silver Fighting Colts claimed their first state golf championship at the 5,400-yard, par 71
Nancy Lopez Golf Course at Spring River with a two-round total of 169-over par, 737 (375-362)
at the 2016 Furr’s Buffet Girls’ A-4A State Golf Championships.
Last year, the Fighting Colts finished fourth with a team score of 319-over par. Silver was followed
by Texico (+223), Portales (+232), Kirtland Central (+259) and Ruidoso (+270).
Courtney Andersson of Mesilla Valley
Christian won the individual title with a
two-round score of 24-over par, 166, beating Kyla Jones (+25) of Kirtland Central by
one stroke. Andersson shot a 11-over par,
82, in round one and held a one stroke lead
over Jones going into the final round. Both
Andersson and Jones would card a 13-over,
84 in the final round.
Bailey Rowley of Portales finished third
with a two-day total of 32-over par, 174,
followed by Carisa Padilla of St. Michael’s
(+35), Rhiannon Jaramillo of Silver (+39)
and Chelsea Medina (Silver) at 41-over par.
Socorro Claims A-4A Boys’ Golf Championship
Socorro won their 14th blue trophy at the 2016 Furr’s Buffet Boys’ A-4A State Golf Championships at the 5,400-yard, par 71 Nancy Lopez Golf Course at Spring River. The Warriors shot a team
score of 47-over par, 615. It was the first title for the Warriors since 2006.
Socorro was followed by NMMI (+72), Hope Christian (+73) and St. Michael’s (+75).
Individually, Thomas Tulk of Portales carded a two-day score of 6-over par, 148. Tulk was behind
four strokes going into the final round of
play. He then carded a 2-over par, 73 to win
the individual state title by two strokes over
Sean Moore of Socorro. Moore finished the
championships at 8-over par, 150.
Brett Anaya and Ricky Silva of Socorro finished tied for third with a score of 9-over
par, 151, followed by Sergio Amieiro of
NMMI in fifth at 11-over par.
Artesia Wins 5A Girls’ Golf Crown
The Artesia Bulldogs girls’ golf team captured the blue trophy for the first time in school history
at the 2016 Furr’s Buffet Girls’ 5A State Golf Championships in Farmington, N.M., with a tworound score of 174-over par, 750. The Bulldogs shot a two-round score of 85-over par, 373, at the
5,450-yard, par 72 Piñon Hills Golf Course.
Artesia and St. Pius X finished the championships in a tie for first at 174-over par. The two teams
played a one hole playoff, with the Bulldogs coming out on top.
St. Pius X finished second with a team score of 174-over par, 750, followed by Lovington (+216),
Los Alamos (+245) and Goddard (+251).
Katie Allen of Albuquerque Academy won the individual title with a two-round score of 20-over
par, 164, carding the only round in the 70’s for the tournament, a 79 in round two. Josey Jackson
of Artesia placed second with a score of 23-over par, 167. Allen became the third player from
Albuquerque Academy to win the girls’ individual title in back-to-back years.
Allen’s teammate, Nicole Spence finished
third with a two-round score of 24-over
par, 168, followed by Ashlee Garrett (+25)
of St. Pius X, and Sara Cain (+31) of Goddard.
One of the highlights of the tournament
came in round two as Samantha Lefebre of
Los Lunas hit a hole-in-one on the par 3,
15th, the first of her career.
St. Pius X Hoists 5A Boys’ Golf Blue Trophy
St. Pius X captured the 2016 Furr’s Buffet Boys’ 5A Golf Championship with a two-round score of
88-over par, 664, at the 6,750-yard, par 72 Piñon Hills Golf Course. This was the first blue trophy
for the Sartans since 1981.
St. Pius held off Artesia, who carded a 92-over par, 668, followed by Piedra Vista (+101) and Santa
Teresa (+222).
Patrick McCarthy of St. Pius X, who finished third in 2015, carded a 3-over par, 147 for the tournament, capturing the individual title. McCarthy becomes the second Sartan to win
the individual title and the first since 2003
(Marcus Molina). Trey Diehl of Piedra Vista finished second with a two-day score of
5-over par, 149.
Zack Holesinger of Farmington finished
third at 10-over par, followed by Caleb
Morton of Artesia (+15) and Jake Andreis
(Roswell) and Nolan Gillihan (Centennial)
placed fifth (+16).
Cleveland Captures 6A Girls’ Golf Title
The Cleveland Storm captured their first blue trophy at the 2016 Furr’s Buffets Girls’ 6A Golf
Championships at the 5,600-yard, par 72 The Canyon Club in Four Hills. Cleveland carded a 113over par, 689, winning by 40 strokes.
La Cueva took second with a two-round team total of 153-over par, 729, followed by Clovis (+207),
Hobbs (+225) and Deming (+288).
Jacquelyn Galloway of Cleveland won the individual championship with a two-round score of
4-under par, 148, shooting back-to-back
rounds in 70’s. It was the fourth year in
a row that a Galloway sister had won the
state tournament, as her sister had won
the previous three years.
Dominique Galloway finished second with
a score of 12-over par, 156, followed by
Sarah Rippberger of La Cueva (+15), Summer Vigil of La Cueva (+25) and Sabrina
Galfano of Volcano Vista (+33).
La Cueva Wins 6A Boys’ Golf Title
The La Cueva bears took home the blue trophy for the ninth time and the first time since 2011
with a two-round team score of 29-over par, 605, at the 2016 Furr’s Buffets Boys’ 6A State Golf
6,700-yard, par 72, at the The Canyon Club at Four Hills.
The Bears outlasted a strong push from Cleveland in the final round to win by 10 strokes as the
Storm finished 39-over par, 615. Hobbs placed third at 53-over par, followed by Carlsbad at 79over par.
Kevin Kim of La Cueva became the first player from La Cueva since 2010 (Patrick Beyhan) to
win the individual title. Kim carded a two
round score of even par, 144. During his
two rounds of play, Kim recorded 10 birdies and only one double bogey.
Tyler Cox of Hobbs finished second at
5-over par, 149, followed by Justin Davis
(Cleveland) at 8-over par, while Alejandro Armijo (Cleveland), Andrew Daily (La
Cueva), Conner Allen (La Cueva) and Corey Haught (Cleveland) all finished tied for
fourth at 9-over par, 153.
