She was greatly admired by her fellow students, Jascha Heifetz and Nathan Milstein, and Heifetz was supposedly in love with her. Her career was delayed by the outbreak of World 269 CECILIA HANSEN INSTRUMENTAL 78 rpm Discs War I. In 1916 she wed pianist Boris Zakharoff, who accompanied her only recordings, made for Victor in 1924-25. She appeared as a successful concert artist in Europe and Scandanavia but left Russia in 1921 because of the Revolution. She toured the U.S. in 1923-24. During a tour of the far East in 1928, her husband decided to remain in Shanghai as a teacher. The fact that she remained with him as long as she did would seem surprising, as he was considered, according to one source, to be “an uncontrolled, self-centered artist”. In the 1930s she married Hermann Friedmann, a Jewish lawyer, philosopher and polymath and lived in London, playing there during and after the War. One of her two daughters was killed during a 1940 German bombing raid on London. In 1950, her husband accepted a Professorship at the University of Heidelberg, where she joined him, teaching at the Heidelberg Conservatory until shortly before her death, when she returned to London to live with her surviving daughter. 4113. 12” Red EE Vla 6550. He had to serve in the military in 1912 and as a result of the First World War, beginning in 1914, remained in the army until released in 1919. In 1920 he wed an American actress and began a career for which he is remembered as being perhaps the foremost French cellist of his generation. His repertoire included much music of contemporary French composers as well as the more familiar cello repertoire. During World War II he supported the Resistance in France, seldom playing the cello. In attempting to continue his career after the War he became afflicted by a progressive muscular disease in his bowing arm. Only the roughest sketch can be provided here of this remarkable musician, who emigrated to the U.S. in 1907. He had been recommended by Joseph Hofmann in 1902 to the St. Petersburg Conservatory, where he studied with Alexander Glazounov. The family then fled Russia in 1907, and Leo continued his studies in New York. He made his recital debut in 1911 in conventional repertoire, but soon he was “dazzling New York audiences” with works of Schoenberg, Debussy, Ravel, Bartok and Scriabin. Soon his own music was also added to his repertoire, and he became one of the most discussed “American” composers of the 1910-25 period, known as the “enfant terrible” of modern music. In the later ‘20s he lost interest in keyboard performing and gave his last public appearance as a pianist around 1933. He continued composing and teaching but had little enthusiasm for publicizing his compositions (in this respect somewhat reminiscent of Charles Ives). He was rediscovered in the 1970s, and a number of LP records were then made of his music. His final work was his 8th Piano Sonata, written at the age of 97. Readers are referred to the Internet, where much information is available on Ornstein as well as recordings of his music (by others). There are only two issued discs of his playing, these recorded by Columbia on 10 May 1913. Through the kind services of his son, Severo, Leo Ornstein signed these for me, albeit in a somewhat shaky hand, as he was 105 at the time (1998) and living in a nursing home. 2077. 10” Blue Notes Columbia A1473 [38835-1/38836-1]. A child prodigy, Reuter went on to become a noted adult soloist and teacher, and a composer as well. In 1899 he began studies in Europe with Emile Sauret, Cesar Thompson and Henri Marteau and graduated from the Geneva Conservatory in 1901. He toured internationally and spent most of his time in Germany into the late 1940s, then returning to the U.S. (he had retained his citizenship even during W.W. II), where he taught in Waukesha into the early 1980s and served as concertmaster of the Waukesha Symphony. Through his mother and her supposed psychic powers, he became involved in channeling musicians of the past and writing on these experiences. He also wrote several books, including a novel entitled The Twilight of the Gods on Hitler’s Berlin “by one who was there.” 3238. 12” PW Blue elec. Polydor 95250 [589bi/590½bi]. She first was taught privately in London by Alexander Ewing. She subsequently studied at the Leipzig Conservatory for a year and then with Heinrich von Herzogenberg. Among her early musical successes was the opera Der Wald, performed in 1903 at the Met, where it remains as the first and only opera by a woman composer presented there. A later opera, The Wreckers, was considered her most effective stage work. Its premiere was in Leipzig, 1906, in German, and in 1909 under Beecham in England. Sporadic staged and concert performances have been given subsequently, including the American concert premiere in 2007 in New York. Smyth’s composing diminished with her loss of hearing, first noted in 1913, and then she developed an interest in writing, publishing ten books between 1919 and 1940. She was also a strong advocate of women’s sufferage and was even jailed for two months, as a member of the Women’s Social and Political Union, for breaking windows of politicians who opposed women voting. “Smyth had several passionate affairs in her life, most of them with women”. Los Angeles, 1900-1991. Warren had an abiding musical interest and manifested talent from her earliest years. She studied piano beginning at five with Olga Steeb and began theory and composition studies at the age of 14 with Gertrude Ross, alhough she had begun composing a decade earlier. By 18 she was a published composer (G. Schirmer). After a year at Mills College and piano master classes with Leopold Godowsky and Harold Bauer, she moved to New York and studied with Frank LaForge, Paul Gallico and Clarence Dickinson. She accompanied a number of artists, including Margarete Matzenauer (at a Carnegie Hall Concert and tour, 1921), Richard Crooks, Lawrence Tibbett, Lucrezia Bori and Florence Easton. Her songs were also featured on the concerts of these and other important singers. She evolved into being one of the leading women composers of her time. Several of her large scale works, in a neo-Romantic style, were performed by major orchestras and in important music festivals. She continued her musical studies for many years, including a period with Nadia Boulanger in Paris, 1959. She made a few rare recordings for Okeh around 1922. In a revival of interest in her music, CD recordings of some of her works have appeared fairly recently featuring Thomas Hampson and other important artists. 2166. 10” Maroon acous. The household was frequently visited by prominent cultural figures, among them the composers Johannes Brahms, Gustav Mahler, Josef Labor, and Richard Strauss, with whom the young Paul played duets. His grandmother, Fanny Wittgenstein, was a first cousin of the violinist Joseph Joachim, whom she adopted and took to Leipzig to study with Felix Mendelssohn. Less than a year after he made his concert debut in 1913, Wittgenstein 285 INSTRUMENTAL 78 rpm Discs / PERSONALITY, SPEECH & CURIO was in the military and leading a patrol in Poland when a sniper’s bullet shattered his right arm. He was taken prisoner by the Russians, and in a primitive field hospital his wounded right arm was amputated. Returning to Austria late in 1915 via a prisoner exchange program, he continued in the military by serving as a general’s aide on the Italian front until the end of World War I. Through remarkable determination, Wittgenstein subsequently resumed his career, commissioning works for left hand alone by a host of composers including Ravel, Hindemith and Prokofiev – Internet sources 1031. 10” acous.
