Fatal Crash Claims Life on
Christmas Eve in Barbour County

It is estimated that over 100 million Americans traveled our
roads surrounding the Christmas holiday. With the increased
traffic comes more auto crashes. Just like millions of others
on Christmas Eve, I was
on the roads traveling
from house to house
visiting family.
On
Thursday afternoon I
was leaving Elkins, WV
starting my 3 hour journey to visit family in
Princeton, WV via
Route 33 in Barbour County, WV.
Not long into my drive I arrive on the scene of a tragic crash
involving a single vehicle with 2 occupants. Both occupants
were ejected from the vehicle as it rolled several times on the
4-lane of Route 33. My years of previous emergency services work was put to the test in providing care for the injured.
I was not alone in providing aid to the injured, a swarm of
other drivers stopped to help the victims.

It wasn’t long before emergency crews from Belington, Junior,
and Coalton Volunteer Fire Departments arrived. Due to the
severity of the injuries to the female occupant, she was flown
by HealthNet to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, WV.
The male was pronounced dead at the
scene of the crash.
Investigators have
told Auto Guide

dropped off the left
side of the road and lost control of the GMC Sierra pickup
truck which flipped several times ejecting both passengers.
Preliminary reports say neither occupant of the truck were
wearing their seatbelts.

After leaving the accident the detour through the West Virginia
backroads gave me time to reflect on the families that lost a
loved one and who would be dealing with a critically injured family member over the holidays.
I also realized the world has many caring people who stopped
and rendered aid to the injured. My years in the emergency
services field makes me no stranger to these types of incidents,
but gives me a stronger appreciation for those who stop to help
others.

Tractor Trailer Crash Closes
I-64 in Institute, WV
Holiday travelers on I-64 in Institute, WV were delayed getting
to their destination due to a tractor trailer crash on Sunday December 27th. The driver of the 18-wheeler was carrying over
34,000 pounds of cake
mix when a tire blew
out and caused the
driver to crash into the
guardrail and then burst
into flames.
The driver, Army Veteran Rick Stevenson, was trapped in the cab of the burning rig
when a passing nurse stopped and pulled him from the cab.
The crash in Institute caused I-64 to be close for almost 9 hours
during the busy travel day.
The identity of the nurse is not known, but she is being called a
hero by the driver. If you have information about this crash or
