New Board Member
Welcome, Michelle Redmond!
Please welcome our newest Board Member, Michelle Redmond!
“Born
a Buckeye from a little town in Ohio. Grew up in Los Angeles and
Arizona. Now I call Virginia Beach home. I am currently working on a PhD in sport
management at Old Dominion University. I am proud to be a single parent to a ten
year old, who is the love of my life, who is also my motivation for everything. He is
the reason I walk into every IEP meeting with my head held high, shoulders up right
and my game face on. When my son was diagnosed, it was the loneliest feeling in
the world. One of my favorite quotes, “Be the change you want to see” ~ Gandhi.
This drives me to be a voice for those who do not have one. It drives me to become an active member in the
community. This drives me to be the best parent I can be. It is my hope to be able to contribute to a
community that inspires people, helps people and educates people about autism.”
Office Closed June 25-27th
The Autism Society, Tidewater Virginia’s office will be closed Wednesday, June 25-27th as staff will be
attending an outside multi-day conference. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
We will respond to any phone calls or emails received during that time by
Wednesday, June 30th, before the close of business.
Normal hours of operation are Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, 9:30AM-5:00PM.
5K Thank You From Canada
After the 5K event, we returned to the office to find an email from Canada!
5K participant, Paul Braun, wrote the following:
This message is for Angel and the gang putting on the Autism
Awareness 5km race:
I came down from Canada for a short vacation to Virginia
Beach last week. I always like to try to find a race to participate in
when I travel. I was happy to find yours.
The race crew were so helpful to me from signing up, to
getting a race shirt even though I might have been just past the cutoff, to directions to the race, to post race food volunteers, and
more. It was a perfect day for the run and all the runners were so positive for the cause and the enjoyment of
the event.
I was a little surprised that I ran well enough to place 1st overall.
I want to thank everyone who helped put on the superb event. If I can I
will definitely try to be back next year.
Thanks again for the awesome work that you do!
Paul Braun
Thank you, Paul, for choosing our race and for all the support!
Congratulations on your 1st place award! We look forward to seeing you
again next year!

DBHDS Announces Next DD/ID Waiver Grant Funding Cycle
Medicaid Waiver Update for the Individuals and Family Support Program (IFSP) Waiver
Update May 19, 2014.
In order to meet demand and process applications in a timelier manner, IFSP funding will now have
two funding periods. The first funding period will start September 15, 2014 (P1). Funding for this period
will cover funding for supports and services that are required by individuals and families for a one year
time period of September 15, 2014 through September 14, 2015. The second funding period will take
place March 15, 2015(P2). Funds for the second period will cover services and supports for March 15,
2015 through March 14, 2016. It is requested that those wishing to ask for funding for summer camps wait
until the second funding cycle to submit their requests. Funds for the program will be evenly split between
the two funding periods. The cap for IFSP funding remains at $3,000, so families may request funding during each cycle if the amounts for each period together do not exceed $3,000.
Additional guidance material will be posted on the DBHDS website shortly.
DBHDS website is http://www.dbhds.virginia.gov/
Event Opportunities & Participation
The Tidewater and Peninsula areas of Virginia are fortunate to have great resources available that
not only provide services and programs, but also provide educational and event opportunities, to local
individuals diagnosed with Autism. Many local colleges, hospitals, and therapy providers continually host
events such as trainings, workshops, and classes to benefit and further educate families, service providers,
and local organizations about special needs and Autism.
The Autism Society Tidewater Virginia highly encourages families and individuals affected by Autism
to look into these unique and important opportunities. We regularly highlight a small portion of the many
events in our newsletter section “Community Events”. These are services, events, and programs that are not
affiliated with the Autism Society Tidewater Virginia, but are hosted locally so that families will know about
the programs and events.
With these opportunities, we want families to understand there can be a level of responsibility that
comes with it. Services and classes are provided and we encourage families to attend. This helps to ensure
that there is an interest in the topics and can help ensure future events and presentations in our local area. If
families are able to utilize services and events locally, the more the providers and topic speakers will be
able to justify that they will be able to return to our local area due to the needs and amounts of interest
that is in the Tidewater area. When events and programs are underutilized, especially in times of
budgetary constraints becomes harder and harder to justify programs that are not being utilized to their
maximum potential.
With that, we encourage families to seek out and provide an interest in the locally-provided events,
be it a webinar, a conference, or even therapeutic and recreational programs. If you reserve space at an
event, please give the courtesy of changing your reservation or cancelling if you are not going to be able
to make it. This will help event coordinators plan for the event and ensure that they are not over or under
purchasing materials, food, and other event-related expenses.
If you need assistance in finding events, resources, and trainings, please contact our office and we
can help you to find events that are of interest to you in our local area. Remember, supporting local events
and activities can ensure that programs can continue locally as well as grow in the future!

Seeking “Parent Partners” for Remote Communities
The Autism Society, Tidewater Virginia is actively seeking volunteers who would like to help assist families in remote areas. Currently, the Autism Society’s largest population reside in areas such as Norfolk,
Chesapeake, Portsmouth, Virginia Beach, and Suffolk. With the recent addition of the Peninsula, we now are
able to assist families in and around Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, and Williamsburg.
However, we know there are many more areas locally that need assistance. We are seeking active
volunteers who would like to become “Parent Partners” in any of the following areas: Windsor, Isle of Wight,
Rescue, Smithfield, Carrolton, Carrsville, Boykins, Branchville, Capron, Courtland, Drewyville, Ivor, Franklin,
Newsoms, Sedley, and Zuni.
“Parent Partners” are an integral part of our organization as we work to assist and support families in
all of our local area. Parent Partners assist families in need who may not be able to travel to our office in
Virginia Beach to seek assistance. They also are able to connect families with local services in their
communities. The Autism Society, Tidewater Virginia will provide Parent Partners with training, supports, and
resources to help support both the volunteer and families they are assisting. Parent Partners will need to abide
by the Autism Society, Tidewater Virginia options policy, submit to background screening, attend training, and
confidentiality regulations.
If you are interested in becoming a Parent Partner in any of our remote locations or the Peninsula,
please contact Angel Barnhill, Resource Director at (757) 461-4474 or [email protected]

The Twice-Exceptional Child
Blog Entry by Susie Juhl, Autism Society Tidewater Virginia Board Member & Peninsula Coordinator
Raising a child who has exceptional abilities and talents and who also has some significant needs has
been at times humbling, confusing, exhilarating, profound and heartbreaking, sometimes all at the same
time. Before we had speech, we had intricately designed wooden block churches, with artful steeples,
symmetrical doors that opened, spiral staircases within that rose up off the living room floor. Airplanes of all
different make and period were created with internal engine components that moved, imitating the actual
mechanical processes. Visual art on magnetic drawing tools and later on paper followed, some of which are now
featured in public venue.
These creations were then and are today a window into our son’s inner world, which we feel extremely
privileged to be welcomed into frequently now. But, for a long time it was not that way, and we worked hard to
connect with our son in a way that would be meaningful to him. Sometimes it felt like we were losing the battle,
that we could not compete with his internal stimulation. He seemed to be walled off from us, entranced by that
which only he could sense and see.
Early on and for several years, severe behaviors resulting, we believe, from his inability to communicate
his needs, self-soothe once upset and mental rigidity that made the natural unpredictability of daily life so
overwhelmingly aversive to him, eclipsed our days and our family’s happiness. Our son would wake up in a
tantrum, unable to process the transition from dream into reality, meltdowns occurred at every turn; even a word
or phrase spoken out of the original context he had first heard it could cause a severe aggressive or self-injurious
behavior. It felt as if emotional land mines littered our home and at any moment, he would scream, then
completely unravel and take our day with him. There was a sense of paralysis and hopelessness during this time
that persisted for too long.
Over time and through intensive behavior training, both for him and for us as parents, we learned how to
develop interventions that taught a replacement behavior that would be more positive and effective in meeting
his needs. Slowly, over the course of years, we climbed out of that dark place.
There is a moment I remember so clearly that encapsulates the seemingly paradoxical experience of
perceiving the dual-exceptional features of your child…One year into implementing a potty training program
that Aiden was clearly not interested in, I sat with him for the thousandth time in the bathroom, ready to reward
him should he be successful. He was so far away, and in that moment I was so worried he might never develop
this skill and then more acutely concerned that his gazing off in a trance-like state might actually be a seizure.
I grabbed his shoulders, too intrusively I realize now, to get his attention and bring him back to me. I asked him
what he was thinking, not sure if he could respond or would understand. After several more moments, he said, as
if he had given this a lot of thought, “If the earth is always rotating, why does it feel like I’m sitting still?” He was
4 at the time, and four years later, I can no longer count the number of times I have had this breathless feeling of
awe as I watched or listened to Aiden stretch so far beyond my own comprehension, expectation, intellect and
imagination. Being his mother has been the ultimate gift, all the more for the challenges that have forced me to
rise to meet them.

Changes Coming to Military/Tricare Covered ABA Services
Information and comparison chart provided by Katja Kox-Fishe, Autism Society Tidewater Virginia Board Member and
Peninsula Group Coordinator and AMFAS Representative. Information provided from American Military Families Autism
Support (AMFAS).
Recently, the Defense Department submitted reports to Congress regarding the current Tricare ABA benefit
programs. The report announced the Defense Departments intention to consolidate all Tricare coverage of ABA services
into one new Demonstration Program entitled Comprehensive Autism Care Demonstration.
The report indicates the Autism Care Demonstration will provide all ABA services for all eligible beneficiaries
(active duty and retired) with a diagnosis of ASD. Services may be provided by BCaBA’s or Behavioral Technicians
under supervision of BCBA’s/BCBA-D’s.
Tricare will transition all beneficiaries to the new Consolidated Program in a phased approach between July
25 and December 31, 2014 to ensure continuity of care. The new Demonstration will be a temporary benefit in effect
until December 31, 2016. As a Demonstration Program, it’s goal is to provide flexibility, data, and recommendations in
order for Tricare to develop a permanent and appropriate program benefit to provide ABA therapy services to military families.
More information regarding this upcoming change can be found at the AMFAS website at:

What's in the Money!
Did you know that you do not have to wait for an event or
a certain time of the year to make a donation?
Donations are needed throughout the year to make sure the
Autism Society, Tidewater Virginia has suitable funding to
provide the many resources, events and services to families who
need them in our community. Donations can be mailed to our
office Autism Society, Tidewater Virginia , 5291Greenwich Rd.,
Suite 1, Virginia Beach, VA 23462 or you may donate online

Family Scholarship Program
On Monday, June 9th at 6pm the Autism Society, Tidewater
Virginia Scholarship committee met to select applicants for our
Quarter 1 and 2 Scholarship distribution. We missed the first
quarter with our big move and 5K so we combined them so we
could select more applicants. A total of $3,565 was awarded!
Did you know that you may be able to contribute to the
Autism Society through your employer? Many employers
have a payroll deduction program established where employees
can have a specified amount deducted from their pay at each
pay period or an alternative timeframe. And, you don’t have to
do a thing! Your employer makes sure your donated funds get
to the organization you have identified (Autism Society, Tidewater Virginia ). In most cases, you may have to renew the
process each annual or fiscal year. Many employers who support
charitable giving by their employees also match those funds
themselves; giving back to the communities in which their employees live. Please contact your Human Resources or Payroll
representative to learn more about your employer’s policy/
program and make the decision to support Autism Society,
Tidewater Virginia.

Did you know family, friends and organizations you are

identifying who the donation is in honor of and if you would
like them to be notified of the contribution. Don’t forget to
