The company currently operates two production facilities in Western Canada that service The Overwaitea Food Group (owned by the Jim Pattison Group), Canada Safeway Limited, and the North West Company. Canadian Blast Freezers - Expansion February – Canadian Blast Freezers announced its plans to expand its Trenton location facility by 40,000 square feet and has partnered with the province to help "strengthen" Quinte West's economy with 150 new jobs. Belletile Featured in the Globe and Mail Report on Business When Atlanta-based Interface Inc. closed its Belleville, Ont., plant in 2009, Rahumathulla Marikkar and his colleagues saw hope for a different kind of manufacturing. At a time when thousands of manufacturing jobs were disappearing every month across the country and factories sat idled and shuttered by the recession that felled Interface’s plant, Mr. Marikkar put together the funding to launch his own business. He took a big risk and started Belletile, a carpet tile maker. Two years on, he’s hiring and expanding. - Source Globe and Mail—Sat Jun 11 2011 Visit www.quintedevelopment.com today for links to the entire article and a video tour of the Belletile facility! Aerospace Sector and Food Processing Sector Lead Generation Projects Recognizing the opportunities in food processing and aerospace in the Bay of Quinte Region the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada provided funding to the QEDC through the Invest Canada Community Initiative (ICCI) to enhance the capability and effectiveness of the Bay of Quinte Region to attract employment-creating foreign direct investment (FDI) by providing them assistance in developing foreign direct investment attraction, retention and expansion initiatives. ICCI funding for Quinte supported the utilization of lead generation services to identify and target companies in the food processing and aerospace sector. 1. Food Processing Sector Background: The QEDC continues to focus on the food processing sector as a priority for both retention and investment attraction. Nestle, Parmalat Canada, Saputo Foods Ltd., Kellogg, as well as small niche food companies operate in Bay of Quinte. They are members of a food processing cluster that offers fullservice customer support. Companies here meet industry requirements for safe quality food, refrigeration, frozen storage logistics, customized training including HACCP, stainless fabrication—and more. 2. Aerospace Sector Background: The Bay of Quinte region hosts dynamic and growing aerospace companies as diverse as Canadian Airborne Systems, Lockheed Martin and L3 Communications. These companies and other aviation related businesses benefit from their close proximity to 8 Wing/CFB Trenton, Canada’s largest air force base which is undergoing approximately $1 billion in infrastructure spending and has new aircraft fleets at the base. Available, highly skilled military trained workers provide opportunities for private sector companies to access a vast talent pool in the aerospace sectors. Opportunities exist for parts, components, subassemblies, engineering support etc. Private sector / non-military related MRO opportunities are not currently available at the base. www.quintedevelopment.com 2011 6 Bay of Quinte - Special 2011 Edition QEDC Funding T-AMI - April 1 2010 - March 31 2011 The four economic development organizations of the City of Kawartha Lakes, Greater Peterborough Area Economic Development Corporation, Northumberland County Economic Development and Quinte Economic Development Commission received Federal Community Adjustment Funding in the amount of $1.55 million dollars to deliver the Tri-Association Manufacturers’ Initiative (T-AMI). Now it will be recognized as a separate entity. Housed under one roof in the Pioneer building at Loyalist College are eight distinct agencies, all sharing the same objective -- improve Quinte's local economic landscape and create jobs within the communities of Belleville, Quinte West and Picton. The Business Development Bank of Canada, Loyalist Training & Knowledge Centre, Manufacturing Resource Centre, Ministry of Agriculture -Food & Rural Affairs, National Research Council, Quinte Economic Development Commission, Small Business Centre, and Trenval Business Development Corporation all were present to officially launch the QBDC brand to the general public. The QBDC is now an entity where individuals and businesses both large and small can come to address issues related to their business needs. With all partners being located all at the same place it's cost effective for the agencies and more importantly it’s much more convenient for the folks who are starting new businesses or (expect to hire) people. Chris King, CEO, QEDC The QBDC's goals is to help people who are looking to start new businesses, get access to skills training and research and development, as well as helping business managers to benefiting from provincial government assistance programs. www.qbdc.ca Manufacturing Resource Centre In 2011, the QEDC’s Manufacturing Resource Centre (MRC) continued to provide the local manufacturing community with excellent services as the “go to” resource to can assist them with operating their businesses. Many organizations are stretched to the maximum running their day-to-day business. They have little or no time or resources for issues such as investigating government funding programs, keeping abreast of government legislation or coordinating training with other companies. Since inception MRC has assisted local companies on a wide range of issues and has helped local companies access approximately $22 million in funding leveraging over $148 million in total project investment. In addition the MRC has helped deliver a range programs and initiatives focused on improving productivity and innovation in the local manufacturing sector. www.manufacturingrc.ca Mike Hewitt, Coordinator Manufacturing Resource Centre www.quintedevelopment.com 2011 Bay of Quinte - Special 2011 Edition 10 Manufacturing Events Ontario Aerospace Council—Meeting at Air Force Museum The QEDC hosted the Ontario Aerospace Council Presentation & Networking Event “Opportunities in Aerospace” Over 75 people attended the successful event which featured Rod Jones, Executive Director of the Ontario Aerospace Council.
