We're trying to fill the Kingdom of God.
"..By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one for another." John 13:35
My Friend, Brother, and Mentor:
Ted K. Pressley
There was a line I heard in a movie once that
went something like this, “If wealth could be
measured in friends, you’d be the richest man
alive”… (The response was) “It is, and I am”. My
life has been “enriched” by my friend and brother,
Ted K. Pressley.
I first met Ted at the 1988 All American Quarter
Horse Congress. I noticed in the program that
Sunday church services were conducted by
Cowboys For Christ (CFC) and we (my wife, Debbie
and I and our friends, Bruce & Joan) went to check
things out. At the CFC Service that day, God
touched my heart, but I wasn’t quite sure what He
had called me into. Within a week I phoned the
CFC office in Fort Worth to complement Ted on
the service. I had no idea what would follow that
phone call in the coming years.
Ted encouraged me to pray about starting a
CFC chapter in our area. He told me how to go
about starting, what to expect and promised to pray
with us about it. I didn’t realize it at the time but he
had already taken on the role of a mentor with me.
By definition, a mentor is a person or friend who
guides a less experienced person by building trust
and modeling positive behaviors. An effective
mentor understands that his or her role is to be
dependable, engaged, authentic, and tuned into
the needs of the mentee.
God blessed our efforts so much in that first
year with West Keystone CFC, that Ted offered to
license me through CFC into “The Gospel Ministry”.
I know now that it was a “God thing”, when I was
offered my first trip to Texas with a friend in January
of 1990. On the 23rd of January, 1990, in Ted’s
office I was licensed by Cowboys For Christ. The
certificate still hangs on my office wall. For me this
was just the beginning of a very fruitful ministry. I
was blessed to serve CFC as a chapter president,
a member of the Board of Directors and as
Northeast Regional Director. Ted, as my “mentor”,
often encouraged me to reach higher and dream
bigger. Many times he had more confidence in me
than I had in myself, and his vision of what God
could do through me was always more optimistic
than mine. (By the way, that first visit also included
my first ride on “T-Bone”, Ted’s Longhorn steer.)
Ted was always an encourager. When
introducing me to someone, Ted always built me
up more than I thought I deserved, and he really
did enjoy introducing you to all the “champions”
and “celebrities” that he knew. Sometimes Ted’s
introductions displayed his sense of humor. Ted
had found out that I had fervently prayed for a sick
cat at one of the CFC church services. That was
before I realized that I was praying for a cat! The
following October at the Quarter Horse Congress,
he called me up to open the CFC Service in prayer.
Before I prayed, he announced that if anyone had
a sick dog or cat, that I was the one they should
call on for prayer. It took a while to live that one
down!
During the ensuing years, I would call Ted (or
he would call me) on a weekly basis, and our
Jan / Feb 2013
friendship grew. The dictionary defines a friend as,
a person whom one knows, likes, and trusts or a
person with whom one is allied in a struggle or
cause; a comrade. I especially like the second part
of that definition, where it mentions being allied in
a struggle or cause. Over the next twenty odd years
we were allies in the “Cause of Christ”, sharing the
good news of the Gospel at every opportunity. And,
we were also comrades in the struggles of life that
we each faced. As believers in Christ, we have
many promises in scripture. One that we don’t often
cling to is found in John 16:33 where Jesus
promised that we would have trouble in this world
(He also said that He overcame the world)! We
walked and prayed together through many of the
trials that we each experienced. Proverbs 18:24 in
the “Message” translation reads: Friends come and
friends go, but a true friend sticks by you like family.
Ted and I stuck by each other through many good

Please remember that the statements and
expressions are those of the witnesses, and not
necessarily those of the staff or officers of Cowboys
For Christ.
Supreme authority over this organization
and all its activities is vested in God's own Son,
the Lord Jesus Christ, and exercised by the
Holy Spirit. This must be recognized and
practiced as laid out for us in God's divinely
inspired Word, the Holy Bible.
Cowboys For Christ is not a substitute for
the local Church or Assembly, nor is it in
competition with any denominational group.
It seeks, rather, through God's enabling grace,
to be a helper to all local churches,
denominations and groups to the extent that
they are in harmony with the will of the
Almighty God. Its function is to proclaim the
Word of God. It is designed for outreach and
building up of the Body of Christ, God's bloodbought people, and in harmony with the work
of the Holy Spirit is an active force in the Lord's
program for the present day.
The message of The Christian Ranchman
is the saving grace of Jesus Christ. These
messages come to us in a variety of
expressions, including testimonies and Letters
to the Editor, and each is meaningful in its own
way. We pray that the Holy Spirit will minister
to each of you that bit of reassurance and
comfort your need today.

My Friend, Brother, and Mentor:
Ted K. Pressley
(Cont. from Pg 1)
times and bad.
Ted was not suited to cold weather. When he
came to our area in Western Pennsylvania or to
Central Ohio, he was cold, even in the fall. He
dressed, for the weather, and he liked good boots,
hats and clothes. I remember one night of “spiritual
testing” for my brother, Ted. In December at my
home church he was preaching a revival. After the
service we walked across the snowy parking lot to
get in my pick-up. Just as we opened the doors an
icy gust of wind took his Stetson (probably about a
24x quality beaver hat) off his head and it rolled
like a wheel across the parking lot right in front of a
friend’s car. You guessed it; my friend drove over
Ted’s hat. The hat was so well made that it retained
its shape and with a little brushing was clean.
Apparently not clean enough though, because
within the hour a waitress while walking behind Ted,
tripped and filled his hat with ice water. He handled
it well, and passed the test! Speaking of preaching,
Ted was the most animated preacher I have ever
seen. He preached the word from pulpit, choir loft,
standing on a chair, or sitting on the stage. I can
still see the veins in his neck standing out as he
emphasized, “TENACITY!” Oh, and I have seen
him keep up this pace for nearly three hours! He
loved to preach.
Ted rebuked me one time while he was going
through a physical challenge. You might remember
the time he shot himself in the foot. He didn’t mean
to shoot himself; it was what we refer to as a
“hunting accident”. Now, I have never been real
proud of my size 13A feet and have always tried to
keep them covered. When Ted told me that he had
blown a tennis ball sized hole in his foot, I said,
“Now you’re going to have an ugly foot too, just
like me.” I’ll never forget his response to me. He
said, “That’s not scriptural! Read Isaiah 52:7!”
Isaiah 52:7 (NKJV) reads: How beautiful upon the
mountains are the feet of him who brings good
news, who proclaims peace, who brings glad
tidings of good things, who proclaims salvation,
who says to Zion, “Your God reigns!” Ted told me,
“The bible says we’ve got pretty feet, because we’re
bringing the good news and proclaiming salvation!”
I stood rebuked! By the way, we agreed together
with a lot of you out there for healing, and God
touched Ted’s foot and healed it. He never even
limped. In fact, if he was in a hurry; I had a hard
time keeping up with his “brisk pace”.
In 2003, I was offered a part-time position at
our church with the option of working full time when
we sensed it was God’s will. This was an extremely
hard decision to make because I had no other plans
than to serve Christ through the Cowboys For Christ
ministry. I also did not want this to jeopardize the
Page 3 * THE CHRISTIAN RANCHMAN * Jan / Feb 2013
relationship that Ted and I had built over many
years. I had resisted the thought of ever becoming
a pastor because I felt that I was in the best possible
place for winning souls and making an impact that
I could ever be in. I finally asked Ted to pray with
me about this and was pleasantly surprised with
his response. He, once again, supported and
encouraged me and prayed with me just like a true
friend and brother would. Again, Ted was ready to
look at the bigger picture of what God might have
in store. I started January 1, 2004 as “Pastor Ron”
at New Life Baptist Church in New Wilmington,
Pennsylvania, and after eighteen months stepped
by faith into this position as a full time associate
pastor. God has been blessing our work here at
New Life Baptist Church and we have seen lives
changed, souls saved, chains broken and Christ
glorified. I am the Pastor of senior members and
the Ministry Leader for Celebrate Recovery at New
Life. I still sometimes miss the sights, sounds, and
even the smells of a horse show or rodeo arena,
but God has me where He wants me to serve for
now.
The last two years of our relationship had its
struggles; primarily because of distance. Ted had
shared some of his health issues with me more
than a year before his passing. We prayed through
the arthritis and cancer issues, but when he
suffered the stroke my heart was broken. I wanted
to be there with him and was comforted to know
how family and friends surrounded and supported
him in that time of need. I was extremely grateful
when his son, Russ was able to get Ted on the
phone for my last conversation with him. We were
able to express our gratitude for years of friendship
and ministry partnership and for the joy that lay
before us as followers of Jesus. When Ted passed
away, the church allowed me time to go to Ted’s
for his funeral. It was a blessing to spend time with
his family and stay at his home one last time. I was
honored when his family asked me to serve as a
pall bearer.
Recently, I had been grieving the loss of my
friend a lot when I realized that I was also grieving
the loss of my mentor. Ted always asked about my
family and ministry, and encouraged me to be a
better husband, father, and minister of the gospel.
This encouragement and his example have helped
me to become the man I am today. I miss his wise
counsel, his optimism, and his Texas accent while
saying, “finer ‘n split frog hair, not near as fuzzy” or
“amen, a-women, the rest of you just nod yer head”
or “if I get any better ‘n this, I’ll have to split up and
be twins”.
I thank God for the friend, brother, and mentor
that I had in Ted Pressley. I really miss him and I
fully expect him to introduce me to some of the
“champions” of the faith when I arrive in our eternal
home with Jesus.
In Christ, Ron Nagel

TESTIMONY OF LARRY “TREY”
TROUBLEFIELD
I’m a rough stock rider from Artesia, NM. I was
born to a life filled with drugs and alcohol, and I
had never accepted JESUS CHRIST as my LORD
and SAVIOR until I turned 16 years old. This was
after I was arrested and sentenced to 2 years in a
juvenile corrections facility in Las Cruces, NM.
When I was 12 years old I started to drink beer,
because I thought that’s what cowboys and outlaws
do. Well, I had never even thought of the word sin
or I never went to church, but I still wore a cross
necklace. But anyways, I’m locked up because I
had a drinking problem and also a drug abuse
problem and I also like to fight. I am a person that
was full of energy and all I wanted was to have
fun.
I was arrested on April 23, 2012 on charges of
drinking and fighting and I sat in a county jail for 6
months and then was sentenced to a 2 year term.
In jail is where I accepted JESUS, and I’m about to
be 17 and I will be locked up until the age of 18. In
my opinion this is a test from GOD, a test to see if
I can do right.
I fully accepted JESUS as LORD on 12-9-12
and at that time all my sins were washed away
and I was baptized on 12-16-12. I am seven and
one-half months clean and sober, and I have
improved my life and made my family proud of me
for doing good. I thank GOD every day for HIS
help and for throwing this test at me. If this test
had not changed my life, there is no telling where
I would be.
I believe in the scriptures and the verses that
highlighted my life and made me think is Galatians
5:16-26, and it reminds me every day to stay doing
good and always believe and trust in CHRIST. I
believe I have chosen the right way of life, and I
am proud to say I am a son of the LORD, for HE
has changed my life. Even though I am locked up
I feel good, happy and safe., all because I brought
JESUS into my life, and I’d like to thank you for
listening to my testimony.

Riding Point With Dave Harvey....
Brother Ted At Mid Alantic Rodeo
Remembering Brother Ted and some of the many ministry experiences we have shared over the years sure brings a smile to this
old cowboys face and stirs real spiritual joy in my heart. One of those times that come back really vividly right now was at the MidAtlantic Rodeo Finals at Raleigh, North Carolina way back in the early nineties. At that time the finals were held in conjunction with
the big Cowboy Christmas event the first weekend of December and it was wall to wall cowboys and cowgirls.
Scotty Fox had been ministering at a bunch of the Mid-Atlantic rodeos as president of the Carolina Chapter and had built up a
good relationship with the cowboys and cowgirls. He laid the ground work for a ministry that we were able to continue for a bunch
of years with major results for the KINGDOM. Anyway at that time just right before Christmas there was a lot of excitement with the
season, the holiday festivities with Cowboy Christmas and the rodeo finals. The rodeo contractor had booked a big time country
music singer to sing during the break in the finals and he was expecting a major turn out to hear her and see the rodeo.
Some of you folks may not know about the weather in North Carolina in December, but I’ll tell you about it anyway.
Because the weather that night
was typical December weather, it was cold, windy, half raining and half mist and just nasty. And to go along with the weather we had another problem,
the country music singer was setting up with sound checks in the arena so we couldn’t have the service there and because of the Cowboy Christmas
every other dry place was full, which meant we didn’t have a place to have “Cowboy Church.”
Cowboys and Cowgirls, you all know that Cowboys For Christ has had “Cowboy Church” for over forty years at just about any time and any place that
we could get a few to stand still long enough to hear the Gospel and the Mid-Atlantic Rodeo Finals were certainly no exception; but the big question was
where were we going to have it right now? Because of the weather we really needed a place that would give everyone some cover from the rain and the
cold, but every place that did have a little shelter was stuffed full of the Cowboy Christmas booths. We were not getting any help from the rodeo
contractor or the fairground management, but it’s hard to tell a couple ole cowboy preachers that you can’t have church because there is just no place to
have it.
Well, Cowboys and Cowgirls, you can be sure that Bother Ted and I went to praying and we knew that the LORD would provide a place to have church
even if it was cold and raining. Really it was just a real heavy mist, but if you stood out there long enough you would sure get wet. We doubled checked
out the whole area and still nothing suitable to hold the service, either they were filled with someone or something or on the other side of the fairgrounds,
which would mean we would be there by ourselves.
There were some Cowboys and Cowgirls hanging around the barn that was nearest to the arena, and all of the barns had an overhang over the
outside row of stalls. With nothing left to do we decided to get out the sound system and start playing some music and see how the LORD was going to
work out the situation, because we knew that HE would work something out. We set up the sound system under the overhang and I had a few favorite
Gospel music tapes (yeah, it was that long ago) and the song “Oh, the Blood of JESUS” started playing (I really love that song). I don’t remember who
was singing, in fact, I think it was one of those worship tapes with a praise team. I sure know that the HOLY SPIRIT can stir hearts with that song and
on that cold, wet night as the mist twinkled in the lights the Cowboys and Cowgirls started gathering around the end of that barn and no one seemed to
be aware of the cold or the rain.
I had the tape set up to play the same song over and over again, and within just a few minutes we had a bunch of Cowboys and Cowgirls with more
coming, and some of them were singing along with the music. Folks, you could feed the HOLY SPIRIT falling down on that group of Cowboys and
Cowgirls and HIS presence was much stronger then the rain or the cold. As more and more gathered then more and more started singing along and no
one seemed to mind the weather and no one seemed in a hurry to leave.
Brother Ted turned to me and said to keep that song playing and the microphone jumped into his hand (if there was a mic anywhere close to him, it
just seemed to jump into his hand). Anyway the mic jumped into his hand and, of course, Brother Ted started preaching and I turned the music down a
little and kept it playing. You could almost see the HOLY SPIRIT moving through the crowd as the words of Oh, the BLOOD of JESUS moved through
the mist with Brother Ted proclaiming the WORD. What a joy, what a blessing, what a movement of the HOLY SPIRIT as the cowboys and cowgirls
gathered closer to hear Brother Ted preaching, because we all know when he started preaching things started happening. While Brother Ted was
preaching you could almost see the HOLY SPIRIT move in the hearts and minds of those Cowboys and Cowgirls as the WORD OF GOD went forth from
his anointed lips. Truly it was a time appointed by the LORD with the low soft voice of the singers voicing “O, the BLOOD of JESUS” gently touching the
ears of those folks as the fine drops of mist glistened in the dim light while the mighty man of GOD proclaimed the saving GOSPEL of JESUS CHRIST,
as only Brother Ted could preach.
As he was preaching, I was counting and I counted over one hundred and twenty cowboys and cowgirls standing there in the damp chill to hear an
anointed cowboy preach the glorious WORD OF GOD and the HOLY SPIRIT started moving as the music massaged those hearts of stone. I could tell
that Brother Ted was winding up his message and I turned up the music a little, and those precious words, “O, the Blood of JESUS washes white as snow”
drifted through the crowd and the power of the HOLY SPIRIT sure filled that place. I mean, folks, you may not have felt the misty rain or cold but there
is no doubt that everyone there felt the presence of the HOLY SPIRIT.
For sure, seventeen cowboys and cowgirls felt the HOLY SPIRIT, because that is how many that raised their hands that night to accept the LORD
JESUS CHRIST as their SAVIOR and LORD. Like I have said many times, when Brother Ted starts preaching, things start happening. And happen they
did on that cold night at the Mid-Atlantic Rodeo Finals at the North Carolina State Fairgrounds in the early nineties. A cowboy that worked for the stock
contractor came walking around the end of the stables as I was packing up the sound system and he wanted to know where all of the cowboys and
cowgirls were. He said that there were only about ten in the arena listening to the Country Music singer, and that the contractor had paid her extra money
to sing for the contestants before the rodeo, but nobody showed up. I told him that it was OK, because the cowboys and cowgirls had heard the music
and I mean that they had really heard the music. This is just one of the many great ministry memories with my hero, Brother Ted Pressley; I sure wish you
could have been there.
In CHRIST, Dave

“One Special Moment”
“One Precious Memory”
My relationship with Ted Pressley goes back to
1980. I read The Christian Ranchman in a Cowboy
bunkhouse and got to know Ted shortly after. From
that beginning our relationship grew to a long
friendship.
Ted and I both had a passion for ranching, good
cattle, cowboy life, good horses, and a love for
Jesus.
After several Cowboys For Christ conventions in
Decatur Texas Ted came to Louisiana to preach
and assist us in forming a Chapter. Ted and the
Board of Directors licensed me to preach with
Cowboys For Christ in 1995. Shortly after this I
was asked to serve as a National Director with
Cowboys For Christ. This opened the way for Ted
and I to spend even more time together as we
served The Lord through Cowboys For Christ. I
would fly in to Fort Worth; Ted would pick me up
for the Board Meetings or trips to minister in other
towns or states. We drove many miles together
and I spent many nights in Ted’s home. We talked
horses, ranching, cowboy life, and always talked
about The Lord and the Word. One thing for sure
Ted loved The Lord and knew the Word. We
shared many good times and many happy hours
together. If I wrote everything of the special times
we shared the Christian Ranchman would be full
of just my writings. However, I will tell you of one
very special time Ted and I shared together.
Back in the 90’s, I think maybe 1996, after a
very large and successful convention in Decatur
Texas the Board decided to hold the first ever
Leadership Conference for Cowboy’s For Christ
leaders. Our site for this event became “Dry Gulch”
western town in Oklahoma owned by Willie George
Ministries. This is a complete ol’ western town that
is equipped with dormitories and cafeteria. It was
a great setting for a 3 day leadership conference.
Long time Board member Kitchell Collins did a great
job getting the conference location all set up. We
had many guest speakers and great music during
the 3 days at Dry Gulch. The Anointing from our
Lord Jesus was so strong during the 3 days no
one wanted to go home. We had a great turn out
of people from all over the United States. Some
came as far away as California. One of the first
things Kitchell and Ted felt lead to do was a “foot
washing”. Read John 13:3-15 Verse 5: American
Standard Version (ASV)5 Then he poureth water
into the basin, and began to wash the disciples’
feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he
was girded.
Verse 15 Jesus said: For I have given you an
example that ye also should do as I have done to
you.
We brought in the towels and bowls needed to
divide into pairs of 2 for the “foot washing”. As it
turned out Ted and I paired up to wash each other’s
feet. Friend, if you have never been humbled you
need to attend a foot washing. As Ted and I took
off our boots and socks and took a turn at washing
each other’s feet we prayed for each other. What
a blessed humble time in the life of 2 ol’ hard
cowboys! Our hearts were touched by the love of
God as we washed and prayed for each other. I’ll
never forget that special night in mine and Ted’s
life. Everyone at the Leadership Conference was
humbled under the mighty hand of God and Jesus
anointing begin to flow in a great and powerful way
through the whole conference.
As I stood looking at my ol’ friend’s tired body
as he lay before me at his funeral last January I
remembered many good times, but I will always
remember when I washed the feet of this great
man of God and he washed mine.
God bless you all, In Christ Love,
Rick LeDoux
Lay Down in Peace
By Rocky O. Simmons
I will lay me down in peace, and
sleep: for thou, Lord, only makest me dwell
in safety.
Psalm 4:8 KJV
The nighttime was made for peaceful rest, with
the moonlight as if it were a nightlight, ever so soft
on our eyes. As we lay down to rest we can spend
that time in reflection and diligent prayer. This is a
prime opportunity for us to draw ever more closely
to Christ. As we draw close to God, He draws close
to us.
We shall lie in our beds singing praises to the
Lord with our hearts for He will give us heavenly
rest and divine peace. As long as we do as Jesus
said “fear not, only believe” and trust in Him and
His promises we have nothing to fear and He shall
keep us safe. He will sustain us and we can lay
down in peace letting our hearts rejoice in the Lord,
the best sleep aide since the creation of the
heavens and earth.
When we drift off to sleep while keeping our
mind on the Lord, this is when we can meditate on
what is pure, what is good, what is righteous, and
what is holy as He holds us close to Him. It is then
that we can find peaceful rest, and He will keep us
with His Spirit of peace, love, and of sound mind.
“If you find it hard to sleep, stop
counting sheep and talk to the shepherd.”

Hello Brothers and Sisters
From No Bull About Jesus CFC chapter; December
was a great month in the ministry as we were blessed to
be a part of the Christmas give away at J E Hamilton
prison in Oklahoma. We were able to hand out over
700 gift bags with soap, shampoo and other hygiene
products, along with cookies and candy. The small things
we take for granted in the free world are a real blessing
when you are locked up. I hear a lot of people say people
in prison are getting what they deserve, but they are
some one daughter, son, dad, mom or family member
and everyone deserves to be loved. I am so thankful
for my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ who died on the
cross for my sins, so I did not get what I deserved.
We also got to go into Sebastian county jail on
Christmas morning at 6:30 to hand out gift bags with a
pair of socks, two soups and a bag of candy, and we
also sang Christmas carols. I know that this does not
seem like much, but when you have been locked up for
a while with no socks in the winter or one wore out pair,
then it is a lot. The things we take for granted can sure
be special to certain folks. When I was a kid I hated to
get sock for Christmas, but to see a grown man cry and
hug your neck for a pair of socks, it is a humbling
experience that I thank the Lord for. So remember we
need to show the love of Christ to all people regardless
of their situation in life. What if that was your son or
daughter, remember Jesus came to set the captives free.
We also got to do “Santa and the Bull” for the kids
for three days before Christmas. We took pictures of
kids on the bull with Sparky and handed out toys and
candy and passed out over three hundred cowboy Bibles
and prayed for people’s needs, with everything being
free of charge. We serve an awesome God who meets
all our needs so our chapter would like to encourage
people to step out and spread the love of Jesus Christ.
All of our chapter members have been drunks, drug
addicts and in jails, prisons or rehabs and if God can
use Santa, a bull and a bunch like us then He can use
any body. We want to ask you to pray for us as we go
behind enemy lines helping people to be free through
the blood of Jesus. And if you want a blessing step out
in faith and love someone today and show them the
love of Jesus and my prayer for you or a loved one today
that satan is holding captive, is for that stronghold to be
broken in the name of Jesus Christ and they be washed
in the blood and set free and that God will do for them
what he has done for me in Jesus’ Name. Amen. So if
we can be of help to you or your ministry, or if you, a
friend or loved one is locked up and would like to receive
our No Bull About JESUS prison newsletter which is
spreading faith, hope and love through Jesus Christ then
send us the address and we will add it to the mailing
list, feel free to
contact us, Kane

Pens, Lots, Chutes and Corrals
The first question that may come to your mind is, “What kind of title is Pens, Lots, Chutes and Corrals?” And
furthermore, what connection do they have? The answer to your question is, “It has intrigued you to read this article.
And, the connection between all the words in the title is, they are all forms of confinement, restriction, restrains – in
other words, bondage for animals.
I went to pick up one of my longhorn cows I had left at a neighbor’s for breeding. He has a brand new set of pens.
He called all the cattle in, bulls, cows and calves. They all went in except one. You got it, my cow! She didn’t want
any part of those pens, food or not.
You see, we have had to work on this cow so much she has spent lots of time in pens. Now, she has sense
enough to not get herself into bondage again. And we call cattle dumb animals! Yet, many humans who have the God-given ability to reason and think
continue to find themselves in bondage – all penned up not able to do anything.
The Rule Book (New King James Version, NKJV) says in Romans 6:16, “Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you
are that one’s slaves who you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness?”
There are many who will read this who have set themselves to be slaves to some sin, bad habit or wrong activity. Most of them have been set free
before, but unlike that old longhorn cow of mine, they don’t have enough smarts to not get caught in that pen of bondage again.
A close friend of mine owns a large feedlot in the Texas panhandle. While visiting him, he was telling me about the cattle in each lot. He explained
how many would go here and there. The next stop for these cattle is the butcher’s block. Not that is bondage unto death, as the verse we have just read
explains.
But, the last part of the verse says, “...or of obedience leading to righteousness”. Unlike the cattle in my friend’s feedlot, we have the chance to be
obedient children to Father God and be set free from death, hell and the grave. Now friend, that is really freedom from bondage.
The apostle Paul gives instructions to the young Timothy in The Rule Book that should be spoken to everyone “…everyone who names the name of
Christ.” (2 Timothy 2:19). In verse 26 he says, “…and that they may come to their senses and escape the snare of the devil, having been taken captive
by him to do his will.”
The idea here is that all those who are in bondage would come to t heir senses and escape. Neighbor, if you feel you are so bound in the devil’s
bondage that you can’t get out – you are wrong!! Through the knowledge of Jesus Christ, you can come to your senses and by the power of Jesus Christ
you are set free from bondage! Have you ever watched animals in the chute at a rodeo? Massive bulls, with all their strength, are caught in bondage,
not able to get out unless someone frees them. I have seen bucking horses just stand in their chute sweating and trembling, but when the gate man lets
them out, they come out of that bondage.
I wonder why we, as educated, learned, reasoning humans, don’t know what to do when God opens the door of our chute (bondage)? Some just stay
there wallowing in their bondage simply because someone has told them falsely they had too. In 2 Peter, The Rule Book speaks of false teachers who
tell others they must stay in their situation. They declare to stay in bondage is liberty. The Bible says that’s a lie. Second Peter 19 (NKJV) plainly states,
“While they promise them liberty, they themselves are slaves to corruption; for by whom a person is overcome, by him also he is brought into bondage”.
Neighbor, if someone is telling you that you must stay in your chute of bondage and you can’t get out; you are doomed; and, there’s no use in
trying…let me tell you this from The Rule Book. Galatians 5:1 (NKJV) “Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not
be entangled again with the yoke of bondage”.
I know a man whose corrals are in such bad shape, it’s pitiful. He has sticks, string, old pieces of furniture, and rotten boards put together keeping his
horses in. All they would have to do is lean against the corral to make it fall and they’d be free. But, those horses, like so many of us, have accepted the
bondage they are in, and they will stay there. Folks, what type of pens, lots, chutes and/or corrals are keeping you bound?
Let me leave you with t his freedom fact found in John 8:32-36 of The Rule Book, “And you shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free.
Therefore, if the Son (Jesus Christ) makes you free, you shall be free indeed.”
Do you know Jesus Christ as Savior? Do you know His freedom?

Letter from Dwight E. Cochran,
DVM
Dear Dave,
For some time I’ve wanted to write to share
with you the impact of Faith and your sweet
daughter, Suzy (has had) in my life.
I count it “divine” guidance when it came time
to go to college that I didn’t take the offers from
Dartmouth, Princeton and Johns Hopkins, but
elected to attend Baylor University in Waco, TX.
At that time I was directed toward a career in
medicine and worked through a degree in biology.
As you may or may not know, Baylor required
attendance in Chapel, taking of Old and New
Testament coursework as well as swimming. What
was probably most unusual was that I had been
raised Presbyterian in my home state of Indiana
and saved by the grace of God at the age of 16. I
can vividly remember my cohorts living in Brooks
Hall yelling at me down the stairwell, “hey, Cochran,
you…almost a Catholic” and being amused at
some of these “dyed in the wool Southern Baptist”
young people, a number of whom I learned were
PKs (also a new term to me for Preacher’s Kids.).
I tried the local PCUS church and found it to be
conducted as the classically described “frozen
chosen”. After searching for a “home church” I
settled on Columbus Avenue Baptist, which was
a good “fit”. Between my senior roommate, who
was a ministerial student ordained Baptist minister
and the only 21 year old asking me to explain “the
bird and bees” to him before he wedded his lovely
fiancée, and a swim coach, who was at the time
the Southwest Conference gymnastics champion
and lived his life as an example of a Christian man
to all his students, I had excellent Christian
mentoring – even though I didn’t recognize it at
the time. I owe the members of the theology
school, who enlightened me to the gifts within “the
Good Book” and how to study God’s Word, a real
debt of gratitude. In any assessment, going to a
godly college with folks who were not foreign to
words and phrases like “saved”, “blessings”, “our
Lord”, “Scripture”, and the general benefits of living
a Christian life, was a life blessing to me.
I also remember a morning when a nonuniformed U.S. Navy Captain knocked on my door
to discuss my service and leadership role in a
special warfare role in what we call today a “black
ops” project during the turbulent Vietnam War era.
You have to understand that my Dad, a very quiet
and unassuming man, who lived a non-assuming,
Christian life as a science teacher, and had served
the country in the U.S. Navy, He skippered a trio
of landing craft in the South Pacific during WWII
and was later awarded the Forrestal Trophy by
the Secretary of the Navy for the best reserve
surface division in the U.S. The duty, as explained
to me, would utilize special skills that I never had
thought of as “special”. I had grown up hunting and
handling firearms in the conservative Midwest and
had been taught Morse Code by my Dad as part of
becoming a licensed ham radio operator and
licensed pilot through the auspices of the Baylor
Flying Club. I had always been a leader in whatever
organization I had participated. As an aside, during
this time I had met a seasoned general practitioner
of veterinary medicine who practiced on the outskirts
of Waco, where I had thus been exposed to a career
of caring for God’s creatures. Caring for those over
who He had given us dominion was more my style
than the would-be physicians I studied and lived with
who were pursuing a career for its plethora of worldly
rewards.
As fate would have it, veterinary medical college
acceptance was more difficult than human medical
school (to which I’d already been accepted) and
required that I return to my native Indiana and apply
to Purdue University as the veterinary college in a
state where I had “academic residence”. While I
accumulated the agricultural coursework necessary
for admission, I led our naval team on missions
throughout the U.S. dealing with the agitators who
moved from campus to campus instigating anti-war
riots as wells as other notable figures of the same
ilk and era. Some of these folks are still alive today
and continuing to conduct subversive activities and
can therefore not be mentioned, As this was a totally
covert mission, all our team members had “cover”
assignments or employment. A local law
enforcement agency took me on and after basic
training, provided a “job” via which I could be
compensated without drawing any undue attention.
Interestingly, I was very good at that role and it gave
me “a front row seat on the stage of life” where I
interacted with the best of humankind and the worst.
Our operations were so covert that, to the best of
my knowledge, it’s not possible to locate our team,
team members or a record of our activities. The
Captain I mentioned was my only contact of the
duration. All this time, my faith and foundation kept
me moving ahead and “doing the right thing” in
situations that could easily have led to a life in the
world of “sex, drugs and rock’n’roll”. All this time I
was developing only as God could have developed
me – recognizing the good in mankind and learning
to love those who needed direction and care,
because they knew nothing of a life of faith.
After graduation from veterinary medical college,
I accepted an offer in a small town where the
veterinarian could have been just as easily James
Herriot himself. We saw 5-6 different species per
day and in a variety that most new graduates would
find unbelievable. Yes, this was a kinder, gentler
time, but the economy was shaken to its core in the
recession of the 70s and I would have to consider
buying the practice from this man who gave me two
week’s notice that he was leaving to join the USDA
- I could buy the practice or leave!
Well, let’s see, I had been married for about 6
months, didn’t have the proverbial “pot or window”
and was a regular member of and about to assume
leadership of the Senior High church school class
at the small local Presbyterian church in the county
seat. So, again, I stepped out in faith and
purchased the practice. During the course of those
20 years I was blessed to return to Texas as a
member of the Academy of Veterinary Consultants
whose members served the feedlots of the Texas
Panhandle, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska and
Colorado. The doctors with whom I had become
friends during that association were “good men”
and had a faith that they didn’t wear on their shirt
sleeves but in their hearts. We would have some
of the most interesting and sharing discussions
that restated to nothing medical but were entirely
spiritual. We shared how the Holy Spirit had
impacted our lives and given them genuine
“direction” during our time after official meetings.
Some members of the Christian fellowship might
decry this, but I joined the Masonic Lodge in my
home town. My Dad had been a Mason and I found
that virtually every officer in our lodge was a
member of our church, and they were a spiritual
and God-loving group which quietly served the
needy members of the community. As such, I was
challenged by the uninitiated as to how a Christian
could be a Mason, but that’s another story.
So, after leaving practice in the 90’s I
experienced a junket of directing the technical
services department at the world’s largest animal
health company located in Athens, Georgia, which
had necessitated a move to northeast Georgia and
membership in Central Presbyterian Church. Yes,
I became an Elder there and fought some of the
”new mores” of the church, later to remove myself
from that congregation whose leadership took an
anti-biblical turn that again challenged my faith.
My faith was strong and I left that church for a
small PCA church in an Athens suburb where I
found a church home, I then worked for a number
of good people who needed help in their practices
around Northeast Georgia. I was again blessed
by participation in a small group and later a larger
church in Georgia. Faith and dedication seem to
have made a long circuit from Baylor University
and Waco, Texas.
If I have not bored you too much already, I have
to admit to serving my home county in Indiana as
a Police Commissioner for the county sheriff’s
department, taking a respite to serve a four year
term as the county coroner. Wow, life had taken
some terrific twists and turns, but the Lord has
been my constant Companion in every venue/role
in which I served. It was only through the Lord’s
strength and guidance that I could have delivered

Perfect Love Casts Out Fear!
By R.J. Cox
I hav e suff ered f rom anxiety, f ear, worry,
apprehension, and doubt most of my life. But I really
didn’t know it. I feared rejection, abandonment, ridicule,
criticism, making a mistake, getting hurt, not getting
enough love, not having enough money, getting cheated,
being accused, illnesses, being betrayed, hurting
someone’s f eelings, breaking something, being
unsuccessful, fear of the unknown, what others will think,
and on and on. I tried being a perfectionist to solve these
fears for many years, but that didn’t work out so good –
just ask some of the people who knew me or had to
work with me. It was the “my way or the highway” thing.
Now, when I got born-again and studied the Scriptures
for myself, met with Bible-believing Christians and went
to a Word preaching church, I was not afraid to speak
the Word and the Name of Jesus and plead the Blood of
Jesus and tell the adversary to “shut up” and “go back to
hell” by the authority of Jesus, His death and resurrection.
I kept on living the life God gave me. I saw great triumph
and miracles all around and was living the overcoming
victorious life Jesus bought with His death, blood and
resurrection. But in the midst of all that, I discovered I
was afraid when I was riding my horse. Nifty was my
son’s horse and was well-trained and gentle, a pleasure
to ride. Well, I shared with family and friends I “felt afraid”
to ride and they prayed, and I believe I was delivered
and went on riding and living a spirit-filled life. I had to
address that thought or feeling a few more times in the
Name of Jesus and the fear would disappear.
I learned some new people skills and managed work
better and that helped me let go and stop trying to control
every little thing. But I could tell I sometimes had anxiety,
doubt or worry – like there was a little fear left. But, I had
faith not fear, and I would address it in the Name of
Jesus and go on. Fear would try to rear its ugly head if
someone or something intimidated me or overwhelmed
me or threatened me. I would lose sleep, toss and turn,
break out in some kind of rash, get sweaty on the back
of my neck, think “what if” or “should of” scenarios over
and over. It was sometimes a struggle to vanquish the
thing. One time a friend of mine was going to teach a
small group on Faith and presented FEAR in great big
letters over 20 times in a short time and cited Scriptures,
and the group began talking about all the catastrophes
and diseases and accidents that could happen. I had to
slip out of the room before the teaching was over and
skedaddle to my truck to get back home where it was
safe. I was afraid of FEAR! I kept thinking all the way
home: I have great faith in God and His Word and I
have dealt with fear in the Name of Jesus and I don’t
want to hear any teaching where fear is mentioned more
than faith.
We all get busy doing life and I got so busy in the
last few years that I didn’t take time to ride my horses.
But I enjoyed them all the same – they sure looked pretty
from the house. I fondly called them my “living lawn
ornaments”. They were better than a plastic deer or pink
flamingo in the yard, but a lot more expensive. Anyway,
I had a long commute to work, a career that took a lot of
my time, the internet was pretty interesting plus emails,
Facebook, and satellite television with all those channels!
Going out to eat was an important activity too. I wasn’t
sure my horses were broke anymore and wasn’t about
to find out. I talked to them, brushed them, fed them,
took pictures of them and watched them from the porch
or window. But after awhile, I thought about giving them
away and getting a smaller place.
Then, life slowed down a little, maybe it was the
economy slowing down or me just winding down after
years of go-go-go! Those horses were starting to look
real good and I figured it wouldn’t take much to tune
them up and get them ready to ride. The more I thought
about it, the more excited I got, and I would talk it up to
anybody who would listen. Yeah, it sounded real good
until the time came when I could see me riding in the
very near future. That’s when I thought, “now wait a
minute” and I could feel anxiety, apprehension and fear
take hold of me. It was the last straw when I realized I
again felt the “fear of riding a horse”. Instead of just
speaking to it and going on, this time I stopped and knew
I needed to get to the root of it.
I went to the Scriptures and located 1 John 4:18 There
is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear:
because fear hath torment. I like the King James Version
because I felt like I was being tormented by this
reoccurring fear. I realized I had not allowed perfect love
to flood in and serve an eviction notice on fear – I just
hadn’t made the connection. I opened up my spirit and
asked God to pour His perfect love in me because He
was the f irst to love me, and I asked Jesus to
demonstrate what perf ect lov e is because He
demonstrated His love by laying down His life for me
and so many others, and I asked the Holy Spirit to instruct
me in perfect love that casts out fear and torment so I
could learn, mature and have wisdom in that area. And
in an instant, it happened. Fear, anxiety, worry left me, I
just knew it had. I thought I would have to fight and
stand against it again, but the Holy Spirit assured me it
was gone for good. I immediately had thoughts that went
back to when I didn’t fear riding horses and I could
actually tell how it felt to not have fear in different
situations through the week. I had a serious crisis occur
soon after and I realized the knot in my stomach, the
lightheadedness, and the tingling from my scalp to my
teeth to my feet was not present. That’s also when I
realized I had suffered from this for a pretty long time.
Fear was gone, and remains gone as more situations
present themselves in my life. Now I can look forward to
riding again with excitement and a peace that passes all
understanding (Phil 4:7).
I truly understand the “power” of love like never before
- His love for us and His love working in us and through
us. I am including 1 John 4:17-19 in several versions so
others can be encouraged and fill those places in their
hearts, souls, minds, bodies and spirits with God’s perfect
love so that fear and torment will be permanently cast
out never to return again, in Jesus’ Mighty Name!
1 John 4:17-19
King James Version (KJV)
Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have
boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so
are we in this world. There is no fear in love; but perfect
love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He
that feareth is not made perfect in love. We love him,
because he first loved us.
The Message
God is love. When we take up permanent residence
in a life of love, we live in God and God lives in us. This
way, love has the run of the house, becomes at home
and matures in us, so that we’re free of worry on
Judgment Day—our standing in the world is identical
with Christ’s. There is no room in love for fear. Wellformed love banishes fear. Since fear is crippling, a
fearful life—fear of death, fear of judgment—is one not
yet fully formed in love. We, though, are going to love—
love and be loved. First we were loved, now we love.
He loved us first.
Easy-to-Read Version (ERV)
If God’s love is made perfect in us, we can be without
fear on the day when God judges the world. We will be
without fear, because in this world we are like Jesus.
Where God’s love is, there is no fear, because God’s
perfect love takes away fear. It is his punishment that
makes a person fear. So his love is not made perfect in
the one who has fear. We love because God first loved
us.
Amplified Bible (AMP)
In this [union and communion with Him] love is brought
to completion and attains perfection with us, that we
may have confidence for the day of judgment [with
assurance and boldness to face Him], because as He
is, so are we in this world. There is no fear in love [dread
does not exist], but full-grown (complete, perfect) love
turns fear out of doors and expels every trace of terror!
For fear brings with it the thought of punishment, and
[so] he who is afraid has not reached the full maturity of
love [is not yet grown into love’s complete perfection].
We love Him, because He first loved us.
New International Version (NIV)
This is how love is made complete among us so that
we will have confidence on the day of judgment: In this
world we are like Jesus. There is no fear in love. But
perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with
punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in
love. We love because he first loved us.

DECISIONS—DECISIONS—
DECISIONS
There is one very, very important
decision that each and every person
must make some time in their life. That
decision is to accept JESUS CHRIST
as their SAVIOR and LORD or not to
accept HIM. No one knows when their life will end,
so it is very important to make that decision before
it is too late. I am not trying to scare anyone, cause
any worry or alarm, but I am telling the truth.
It isn’t hard, painful or difficult, in fact, it is very
easy. The Bible very plainly tells us in Romans
3:23, “For all have sinned”. Also, in Romans 6:23
we are told, “For the wages of sin is death”. This
death actually is referring to eternal death. But the
last part of Romans 6:23 reads, “But the gift if GOD
is eternal life through JESUS CHRIST our LORD.
John 3:16 “For GOD so loved the world that HE
gave HIS only begotten SON, that whosoever
believeth in HIM should not perish, but have
everlasting life”.
Romans 10:9 & 10 explains how, “That if thou
shall confess with thy mouth the LORD JESUS,
and shall believe in thy heart that GOD has raised
HIM from the dead, you will be saved. For with the
heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with
the mouth confession is made unto salvation”. And
Romans 10:13 includes everyone, “For whosoever
shall call upon the name of the LORD shall be
saved”. Right now, this very minute you need to
make that decision for eternal life and by praying
this prayer and truly believing you can accept the
LORD JESUS CHRIST as your LORD and SAVIOR.
The late great D.L. Moody once said, “GOD has
put salvation within the reach of everyone, because
all you have to do is believe”.
Please pray this prayer,
DEAR HEAVENLY FATHER,
I come to you a sinner and I am sorry for those
sins, please forgive me. I know that your SON,
JESUS CHRIST, died on the cross and rose from
the dead to save me from eternal death and I
believe that in my heart. Please, Dear JESUS,
come into my heart as SAVIOR and LORD. And
FATHER please help me to be your child. In
JESUS’ NAME, Amen.
If you prayed that prayer, please let us know so
we can add you to our prayer list. Also, we will
send you information on Cowboys For Christ and
a New Testament to help you in your new life with
JESUS CHRIST as your TRAIL BOSS. Contact

HIGHLIGHTS OF 2012
WE RIDE MINISTRY & COWBOYS FOR CHRIST NORTH IOWA
Submitted by Mike Reicherts
We Will Ride Ministry and Cowboys for Christ of North Iowa have had a busy summer promoting the good news
of Jesus Christ. Our journey began by going to a state park that has equestrian trails to ride. While there we visit
and invite the people camping there to a nondenominational church service that would take place on Sunday
morning. We cooked a breakfast for anyone who wanted to come with the service immediately following. Fifteen
people came, ate and attended the service. A salvation call was given after the service along with an offer for
anyone to be baptized in the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues. Immediately following the service
we had one person who rededicated their life to Jesus and was baptized in the lake at the park. Wow what a great
God!!
Two weeks later we journeyed to a park in Forestville Minnesota. Once again we passed out flyers inviting
everyone at the park to a nondenominational church service on Sunday morning. This takes at least 2 hours to
contact all the campsites (horse people and non horse people) at the park. While at the park we fellowshipped with
a group of people from Youth for Christ. Leaders from their group and our group led worship at the service. Praise
the Lord for a kindred spirit in the body of Christ and allowing us to work together for the purpose of furthering His
Kingdom. About 35 people attended the service with once again a salvation prayer was prayed with everyone
repeating the prayer and an offer to pray with anyone who would like prayer. I am not sure what work God did in
people’s lives, but I trust He did some because His word won’t return void and will accomplish what it was sent to
do. A few months later a worship leader felt like God wants her to help our ministry. Praise the Lord for the help and
I trust God will provide and bless them richly.
We Will Ride Ministry was also were invited to a three state mule show, held in New Hampton, IA. God allowed
us to open the show with prayer. The leader of the show carried the Cowboys for Christ flag in the opening ceremony,
with prayer following. There was an accident with a runaway team which rolled the cart with three people on it, in
which God got glorified because He kept them all safe. In the opening prayer the next day we thanked God for
keeping those people safe. We set up a display table for Cowboys for Christ with all free literature to anyone who
wanted it. In cooperation with Cowboys for Christ North Iowa we built part of the props used for the mule show as
shown in a picture above. On Sunday morning God allowed us to put on a church service with about 20 attending.
Mike & Sara (our trick mule) shared Jesus with all attending. A altar call for salvation followed by an offer to pray
with anyone who wanted prayer. I trust that God did a great work in people’s lives. God sure is good and powerful.
Next we got the opportunity to promote Jesus at parades in numerous towns in cooperation with Cowboys for
Christ North Iowa. From there we go to more equestrian campgrounds in hopes of reaching a few more lost souls
for Jesus who is the reason for everything we do. Go into all the world, how can they know unless a preacher be
sent. Jesus is walking by faith believing that we will do what He told us to do, to preach, to teach, to believe, to be
a doer of His word, to be not ashamed of the Gospel, to be the minister of reconciliation, to love God with your
whole heart, soul, body, and mind. We are really looking forward to 2013 to see God glorified in all that we do.

Hello Dave & a Happy New Year to you also!!!!!
You will be happy to know that Ed & I actually sat
down tonight & filled out our paperwork on becoming an
“official” Cowboys for Christ chapter!!!! I will be mailing
that out to you in the morning. I am also attaching a
picture of Ed & myself at the ‘Double B Arena in Monrovia
Indiana sharing our table, our ministries & our love of
God!!! We have been going to the Double B every other
week now for the last couple of months & have been
Blessed beyond belief with the interest that the spectators
& the contestants have shown us. We have passed out
approx. 35 Bibles, many “Christian Ranchman”
newspapers & daily devotionals. People (young & old
alike) ask if we are coming back!!! The way we feel
about it is “as long as there are souls to win, we will be
there!!!” At the last rodeo Ed led the prayer after the
Star Spangled Banner & our son Joshua (who is also the
bullfighter) led the prayer for the bull riders behind the
chutes just before “game time”
Thank you for believing in us & for helping us figure
out how we could work both ministries “Cowboys for
Christ” & Hearts & Hooves Equine Ministry” together at
the same time. It has been a perfect fit!
God Bless

Death, as Christians understand it, is a
change in the form of life; it is not a
cessation of life. Those who have been
given eternal life in Christ Jesus will spend
a few fleeting moments here on this earth.
The rest of eternity is spent in the presence
of God.
Service in the name of Christ can also
live on, even though the servant has gone
to his heavenly reward.
