DECEMBER 2008, Page 1 Behind the Scenes The 2008 community tree lighting, the second annual Pantego 5K Run/Walk and Candy Train are another success story, thanks to a lot of work by a lot of people. Crime Watch and Park Boards, under the leadership of their respective Chairs, Barbara Spurgeon and Nancy York, combined efforts to produce a great day. The Runner worked on the 5K Run/Walk and Carolyn Surritt, with Fast Paws, coordinated the event. Public works has done an outstanding job of making our park a wonder land. I don’t know how they did so much in addition to all the other things they do. Also, Town Hall has been decorated, and in my driving around town, I notice you too have been working hard and decorating. Pantego is being transformed into a tribute to the season. Another hard working, behind the scenes , person is our Town Secretary, Norma Zenk. Norma came to us in 2006, from Bedford and has definitely added a ”touch of class” to our office. She is dedicated to Pantego, her job and council. Her little red car is often Santa and Mrs. Claus was there too!! So if you had your photo taken seen at Town Hall late at night, with Santa, Mrs. Claus and the Elf, please stop by Town Hall and weekends and on holidays. She is always busy, but never too busy to pick up you photos or give us a call and we’ll mail them to you. take your call, listen to your probTHANK YOU lem and try to find a solution. We would like to thank Maurine with Dog Training Club of Dallas County Inc. Her interest and wealth of information not to mention the great turnout of volunteers from the group, was a great asset and they put together a wonderful and educational event for pet owners. We would also like to thank Chris’ Rescue Angels and DFW Pug Rescue Club for attending. We appreciate the time they took to come out and hope that the next time you are looking for a pet, you’ll think of them. Curb and Gutters The 2008 curb and gutter repair project has been completed except for grass that needs to be replaced where curbs were removed. I am keeping a list of areas around town where I have received complaints about curbs still in need of repair and your request will be evaluated in the near future. 2008 Rainfall REPORT From Hank Merbler November 2.9” YEAR TO DATE 31.3” The Town of Pantego bids farewell to our weatherman as he retires from reporting our rainfall. He will be deeply missed, but we wish him a long and healthy retirement. God Bless and God’s Speed! The Fear of Falling Tom Griffith, Fire Chief As children we learn that falling down can be an unpleasant experience and soon after taking our first steps we take whatever steps me must to avoid falling. The risk of falling continues to be an everyday part of life for all of us. As we age falling becomes a very critical factor in our survivability and quality of life. Statistically, approximately 6,000 people die each year from falls and 75% of them are over the age of 65 years. In 2001, 1.6 million older adults were treated in Emergency Departments for injuries from falls and 373,000 were hospitalized. The economic impact of falls is predicted to reach $32.4 billion by 2020. Statistics also reveal that older adults are four times more likely to be hospitalized for a fall than for any other injury and women are two times more likely to be hospitalized than men. About 50% of older adults that are hospitalized do not return to independent living; often requiring long term care or nursing home admission. According to the 2000 United States Census the median age of the population of the Town of Pantego is 44.9 years; this number is higher than the average in the United States. In 2008 the Pantego Fire Department responded to 60 requests for Lift Assistance with 50 needing medical treatment. A Lift Assistance response is where an individual has fallen and cannot stand up without the aid of others. Because of the increasingly aging population and the increase in falls within the Pantego population, the Pantego Fire Department has initiated a program to evaluate the older population on their risk of falling. The program, known as HEROS©, was developed by several PhD nurses at Temple University in Philadelphia, PA. The program is designed to evaluate a persons balance abilities and assign a fall risk number. The program will also address ways that an individual can reduce their risk of falling. Many falls, approximately 31%, are due to environmental factors such as objects, loose rugs, incorrect shoes, and rough terrain. The HEROS© program will also provide citizens with recommendations on how to create a safe walking environment. The program will also address other fall risk factors such as balance instability, dizziness, confusion, and visual impairment. One of the goals of the Pantego HEROS program is to institute a safety inspection program for the home where about 60% of falls occur. The Pantego Fire Department will roll out this program soon with a pilot introduction at the Waterford independent living community. Once the pilot program has been completed the HEROS program will be offered to the citizens at large. Please refer back to the Town Newsletter for future information regarding the HEROS© program. Sparky Speaks Holidays mean a lot of yummy food, parties and lots of family and friends. Unfortunately it is also a time for a lot of home fires. That is where I come into the picture by creating a checklist for adults. That’s right kids, now it is your turn to make sure the adults are being safe. Help Sparky keep an eye on them. The checklist below will help them make sure everyone has a safe and happy holiday season. Checklist for Grownups, Remind Grown-ups to: * Unplug all holiday lights before they leave home or go to bed. Lights look pretty but they can also cause fires. If your lights have cracked or frayed cords, throw them away. If you buy a fake tree, be sure it is labeled “flame retardant.” If you have a real Christmas tree make sure you water it several times a day. Make sure it is not close to open flames and that it does not block an exit from the room. * Light candles carefully (make sure to trim wicks prior to lighting) Did you know that more candle fires start in living rooms, dens, dining rooms, and kitchens during the month of December than any other month of the year? * Blow candles out when they leave the room or got to bed. “When you go out, blow out.” Make sure candle holders are in a safe place and cannot be knocked over. Leave candles to the grown-ups. Make sure lighters and matches are out of kids sight and reach. * Turn out space heaters when they leave the room or go to bed. Keep portable and space heaters at least three feet from anything that can burn. * Never leave cooking unattended. All that holiday food is wonderful, but remember kids and pets should stay away from cooking areas. Declare a three-foot “kid free zone” around the stove. Remember to always place pot and pan handles facing in towards the wall when cooking. I hope everyone has a safe and happy Holiday Season.
