Jacksonville

mission is
to provide a
safe, loving,
forever
home for
endangered
big cats, and
to educate
the public
about their
plight in
the wild
and captivity. Their
primary focus is in the
rescue of cats from
serious situations.
Once an animal is
taken in at Catty
Shack Ranch, they
have a loving home
for life. Catty Shack
does not breed, sell
or trade any of their animals. Some
of the current residents include
tigers, lions, cougars, leopards,
bobcats, arctic foxes
and coatimundis (the
last two are “honorary
cats”).
It all started about
30 years ago with the
organization’s Executive
Director/Curator,
Curt LoGiudice. Curt
actually started out
training police dogs
and began working
with exotic animals in
1982. He acquired his
state license in 1984
and his federal license
in 1992. In 1994 “The
Florida Panther project”
asked him to be their representative
in Jacksonville for educational
presentations about endangered
panthers. His rescue mission had
begun. Curt has continued to

and attends
conferences
in The Exotic
Animal
Industry
and attends
meetings
with the Fish
and Game
Commission
in Florida.
Curt works
with the
USDA and
state officials
when
accepting
animals
from private owners
who can no longer care
for their animals. Most
importantly, he has
earned the respect of
the animals in his care,
and the mutual respect
is obvious to anyone
watching!
In 2000, the Catty
Shack Ranch Wildlife Sanctuary was
granted its nonprofit 501©3 status.
A board of directors was established
and has taken many
steps to help ensure the
best care possible for the
animals in need. The board
adopted a no breeding,
no selling, no trading and
no buying policy to help
ensure every animal that
is given refuge there will
not be jeopardized by
irresponsible growth. Some
of the cats were born at
Catty Shack in the past, but
they have stayed at
the sanctuary and they
have never sold, traded or

Last week, we had the great
pleasure of sitting in on a local jam
session that was like nothing we
have ever seen. This group was
not some up-and-coming rock band
or a powerful youth group from
one of our many churches, but the
residents at Frank Wells Nursing
Home. Led by music therapist,
Jan Barbour, the elder group found
their rhythm with a multitude of
percussion instruments. They
warmed up by singing songs like
“Glory, Glory Halleluiah” and
“God Bless America”. Then using
shakers, tambourines, maracas,
castanets and frame drums, they
began to create music while
singing old favorites. Ms. Barbour
occasionally played from her
keyboard, but mostly stood in the
middle of the group where she
could interact with each individual.
Staff members, including Activities
Director, Linda Moore, encouraged
their extended family members to
participate. They cheered as each
person showed off their talents and
answered questions correctly. At
one point, Ms. Barbour looked in
our direction in disbelief, “I almost
never get this far with my other

inabilities, but seems to have a real
heart for the special populations
groups. Art in general has been
proven to help with Alzheimer’s,
dementia, Parkinson’s disease and
depression to list a few. But music
plays a significant role, especially
when full participation is required.
A hand that is closing due to
arthritis or a recent stroke can be
manipulated around a shaker or
tambourine to help open it back up
and promote movement. A song
stored away in old memories can
be recalled with just a few notes on
the piano. One of the residents even
discovered the soprano voice she
had used for years in her church’s
choir. What was just as impressive
as the talents and songs that were
being rediscovered, was the growth
of the group that came to enjoy it.
People continued to flood into the
room, even at the very last song.
We guarantee all who showed up
were affected by this strange but
rhythmic group, and they will be
counting down the days until their
music teacher’s return. Music really
does make everything better. A
special thanks to the whole family
at Frank Wells Nursing Home and
a big shout out to Jan Barbour, the
leader of the band. Let us know
when ya’ll go on tour!

five species of black
bass: largemouth,
Suwannee, shoal,
Choctaw and spotted
bass. Largemouth bass
are the state freshwater
fish and are found
tthroughout Florida, while
the other species are only
found in rivers in the north
central and northwest regions.
A summary of the new black bass
regulations is below. Visit MyFWC.
com/fishing and click on “Freshwater”,
then “Regulations” for a copy of the
complete regulations.
• The previous three black bass
fishing zones and 40 areas with special
bass regulations have been eliminated.
• All species of black bass
are included in the five fish daily
aggregate black bass bag limit. This
is the same as the previous statewide
rule.
• Largemouth bass: Only one may
be 16 inches or longer in total length
per angler, per day, with no minimum
length limit.
• Suwannee, shoal, Choctaw and
spotted basses: 12-inch minimum size
limit, only one may be 16 inches or
longer in total length.
One of the primary goals of the
new regulations is to protect larger
trophy bass desired by most anglers.

DATA BUSTERS AT THE COA
For the last several years, the
Data Busters program has been
sending a few teenagers to the
Council on Aging to serve our
Northeast Florida
seniors and participate in some of
our activities. This year, we had two
gentlemen, Cautious Joseph, 14 and

have spent the last month
learning new skills.
Data Busters is a 6 week
summer job program for ages
14-16. It teaches life skills
and job skills, as well as
keeping kids out of trouble.
It offers part-time jobs for 2
days a week and classroom
instruction 2 days. Then
on Friday, they learn about
Professional Development.
Upon completion of the
program, each student will
enter high school with a full
credit and their first resume
including a cover letter
written by their instructor.

wins a laptop computer!

finished the eighth grade at
Baker County Middle School.
He moved here from Valdosta,
Georgia in December. When
he heard about the Data
Busters Program, he decided
to get involved to get money
for new school clothes. He will
be moving back to Valdosta soon

Peppered Shrimp Alfredo
• 12 ounces penne pasta
• 1/4 cup butter
• 2 tablespoons extra
virgin olive oil
• 1 onion, diced
• 2 cloves garlic, minced
• 1 red bell pepper,
diced
• 1/2 pound Portobello
mushrooms, diced
• 1 pound medium
shrimp, peeled and
deveined
• 1 (15 ounce) jar
Alfredo sauce
• 1/2 cup grated
Romano cheese
• 1/2 cup cream
• 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper,
or more to taste
• Salt and pepper to taste
• 1/4 cup chopped parsley
1. Bring a large pot of lightly
salted water to a boil. Add pasta and
cook for 8 to 10 minutes or until al
dente; drain.
2. Meanwhile, melt butter

saucepan over medium heat. Stir in
onion and cook until softened and
translucent, about 2 minutes. Stir in
garlic, red pepper and mushroom;
cook over medium-high heat until
soft, about 2 minutes more.
3. Stir in the shrimp and cook until
firm and pink, then pour in Alfredo
sauce, Romano cheese and cream;
bring to a simmer stirring constantly
until thickened, about 5 minutes.
Season with cayenne, salt and
pepper to taste. Stir drained pasta
into the sauce, and serve sprinkled
with chopped parsley.

road. In the case of Hunter
Burnsed, it is choosing
the road that leads him to
God’s great purpose in his
life.
Hunter, 18, was born
and raised in Baker
County and he is typical
in so many ways. He loves
to hunt and fish, like most
guys his age, and was
brought up in church his
whole life, like a large
percentage of our community. But
there are two particular milestones
that were uncovered over the last
several years that have both set
him apart and helped guide his
future. In the 8th grade, Hunter
joined the FFA program. He almost
immediately created a goal for
himself to become one of the State
Officers after graduation. This
well-mannered young man already
understood the value of the Future
Farmers of America as just a newbie
teenager. By his junior year, he was
elected President of the FFA and
was then re-elected for his senior
year. He graduated just a few short
weeks ago with Honors, was a
student at FGC through the dual
enrollment program, and had the
privilege of delivering the message
at the Baccalaureate Ceremony for
his graduating class. And if that
wasn’t enough, he achieved his goal
and became one of the eight State
Officers for Florida’s FFA program.
He is the ninth graduate from Baker
to be given this honor since the

of agriculture and encouragement to
current younger leaders in FFA.
His future would seem locked
into agriculture, but his second
milestone included a calling from
God. In the middle of his senior year
he felt a strong calling to go into the
ministry. He sought guidance from
his spiritual mentors and began
preaching at both local nursing
homes as well as in his own home
church. Hunter is not quite sure
which path he will pursue, but he
believes whole-heartedly that, “If
you let the Lord lead the way, He
will open the doors to His purpose
for your life.” Hunter, we know for
sure that whatever you choose it
will be with the favor of God. Thank
you for being obedient to your call!

Retha Dowling Cowart is one of
12 children born in 1899 to Aaron
and Julia Dowling of Taylor, Florida.
Her marriage to Zade Cowart in
1919 produced three children: Doris,
Faye and Zade. Mrs. “Retha” was a
wonderful pioneer cook and hostess.

2 cups self-rising flour
•
4 Tbsp. Crisco
•
1/2 cup buttermilk
Cut Crisco into flour and add
buttermilk until it is stiff. Grease
pan with lots of Crisco. Add a little
flour in baking dish and drop dough
(about 2 tablespoons of dough at the
time) onto the flour. Put some flour in
hands to keep dough from sticking to
hands and roll dough into biscuits.
Put in the baking pan and drop a pat
of butter on each biscuit. Bake in hot
oven, 475° until brown.

delicious, but the best part about it
is that proceeds are all donated to
our local Council on Aging for the

Meals on Wheels program. Last year
the event raised $6,000 to donate,
and this year the hope is to donate
even more. Each competing team
will cook 6-8 slabs of ribs and only
one is turned in for judging. The rest
of the BBQ is sold to spectators and
guests to raise the money for Meals
on Wheels.

Beliefs and Believing
When thinking about beliefs and
believing, the dictionary was a good
place to start. The word believe
means “to have confidence in the
truth, the existence, or the reliability
of something, although without
absolute proof that one is right in
doing so.” So if we say we believe in
someone, we are persuaded of the
truth or existence of that someone.
We have confidence or trust in;
we have a belief in and reliance
on the integrity, strength, ability,
surety, etc. of that person with a
confident expectation. The words
believe, believe in, faith, and trust
all intertwine with each other in
definitions.
There are four things in the Bible
that we are told to believe:
• “…Believe the gospel” (Mark
1:15)
• “…Believe that He is” (that
God exists) (Hebrews 11:6)
• “…Believe on the name of His
Son Jesus Christ” (I John 3:23)
• “…Believe …that He is a
rewarder of them that diligently
seek Him” (Hebrews 11:6)
One thing we are told not to
believe: “…Believe not every spirit”
(I John 4:1). Why? Satan is a spirit,
our adversary the devil, who as a
roaring lion, walks about seeking
whom he may devour (I Peter 5:8).
His purpose is to steal, to kill, and
to destroy (John 10:10a). He is the
enemy of God and against all that
God loves. Satan is the leader of a
group of fallen angels (demons) who
follow his commands with lies, for
there is no truth in them (John 8:44).
He has infiltrated the church with
false prophets and false teachers
who bring in damnable heresies
by speaking evil (II Peter 2:1-2). He
tricks, lies, and deceives. We must
be watchful and beware.
What are some of the things in
the Bible we should believe?
• God is in the fire with us.
• God made a covenant with
Abraham for all generations to come.
• God opened the Red Sea and
the River Jordan for Israelites to
cross over on dry land.
• God raised Jesus from death to
life.
• God knows all things, from
beginning to end, and reveals the
future.
• God heals us.
• God is our refuge, protection,
and deliverer.
• God convicts and not
condemns.
Anyone not saved? You can
be. Believe. Confess. Be saved!
Read Romans 10:9-13 for biblical
assistance. Actions reveal our
beliefs and believing.

HOOVER - Mirtie Leah Crews
Hoover, age 74 of Hilliard, passed
away Thursday, July 14, 2016. She was
preceded in death by her parents, Raiford
and Mirtie Crews of Sanderson, Florida;
brother, James Crews; and sister, Naomi
Roberson. She is survived by her devoted
husband of 52 years, Leo, and daughters
Kristi (Carlton) Guthrie of Jacksonville
Beach and Pamela (Jay) Coco of Hilliard;
sisters, Virginia Combs and Norma
(Jerry) Milton; two grandsons, Chad and
Brandon Guthrie; three granddaughters,
Morgan, Macey, and Miya Harris; three
step-grandsons Justin Guthrie and Ethan
and Jonas Coco; and many nieces and
nephews whom she loved dearly.
Mirtie fought a courageous battle
with cancer; but never allowed it to steal
her joy, her smile, or the devotion she
always showed to friends and family.
Leo and Mirtie enjoyed a full and fun
life together, golfing almost daily, and
spending quality time with family and
friends whom they greatly valued. She
enjoyed playing the piano for church as
long as she was able, as well as singing
with her sisters for so many celebrations
and church and family events. The
greatest desire of Mirtie’s heart was to
glorify her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
A celebration of her life was held
on Tuesday, July 19, 2016 at Christian
Fellowship Temple on Ohio Avenue in
Macclenny, Florida, with Pastor David
Thomas and Reverend Ricky Dyal
officiating. Burial followed at Taylor
Cemetery, Sanderson. The family
received friends one hour prior to the
service at the church. Arrangements are
entrusted to FORBES FUNERAL HOME,
904-259-4600.

Mrs. Mosley was born on January 8,
1933 in Maxville, Florida, daughter of the
late Ed Mosley and the former Kathleen
Nolan. She passed away on July 8, 2016
after an extended illness. In addition to
her husband of 69 years, Earl Mosley,
survivors include: daughter, Vicki (Jody)
Wallick; grandchildren, Cheyenne
(James) Brigman, Tammy Riggs and Dale
(Rachel) Mosley; sister, Carleen Manning;
numerous extended family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her son,

away
Thursday,
July 14, 2016.
A lifelong
Baker County
resident,
Mrs. Prevatt,
was a retired
food service
provider for
the Baker
County School
System. She
had a heart for people and never met a
stranger. Mrs. Prevatt enjoyed spending
time with her friends at the Baker County
Council on Aging. She loved traveling,
especially to the mountains, cooking
and crochet. She treasured time spent
with her family and grandchildren. She
is survived by her son: Larry (Wanda)
Prevatt of Macclenny; daughters:
Glenda (Don) Scallan of Macclenny,
Margie (Robert) Guy of Glen St. Mary,
and Annie Briner of Macclenny; sisterin-law: Mildred Prevatt of Macclenny;
eight grandchildren, thirteen great
grandchildren, and five great, great
grandchildren. She was preceded in
death by her husband: James Marvin
Prevatt; granddaughter: Misti Jones;

An old biker man is on an
afternoon outing, strolling through
the zoo in Washington, DC when
he sees a little girl leaning into
the lions cage. Suddenly, the lion
grabs her by the collar of her
jacket and tries to pull her inside
to slaughter her, under the eyes
of her screaming parents. The
man immediately jumps into action,
running to the cage and hitting
the lion square on the nose with a
powerful punch. Whimpering from
the pain, the lion jumps back letting
go of the girl, and the biker brings
the girl to her terried parents who
thank him endlessly. A reporter has
watched the whole event.
The reporter, addressing the
biker, says, “Sir that was the most
gallant and bravest thing Ive ever
seen a man do in my whole life.”
The Harley rider replies, “Why,
it was nothing, really. The lion was
behind bars – I just saw this little
kid in danger, and acted as I felt
right.”
The reporter says, “Well, Ill
make sure this wont go unnoticed.
Im a journalist, you know, and
tomorrows paper will have this
story on the front page! So, what do
you do for a living?”
The biker replies “Im a retired
U.S. Marine.”
The journalist then leaves.
The following morning the biker
man buys the paper to see if it
indeed brings news of his actions,
and reads, on the front page:
