Championship in St. Louis. (Photo courtesy of Todd Alkire)
Hoover’s high school robotics team
won the Buckeye FIRST Robotics
Regional Competition at Cleveland
State University. As regional winners,
the team represented Ohio in the
FIRST World Robotics Championship
in St. Louis, MO April 27-30. Over
20,000 students from up to 900 teams,
representing 39 different countries,
competed.
The FIRST (For Inspiration and
Recognition of Science & Technology)
Robotics Competition consisted of over
6000 teams from around the world.
Under strict rules, limited resources,
and the guidance of volunteer mentors,
Hoover’s team of 34 students led by Mr.
Todd Alkire had just six weeks to build
and program a robot.
Although the team didn’t find the
same success at worlds, they’re holding
their heads up and preparing for next
year.
“They are already making plans of
getting back to the ‘show’ next year!”
Alkire said.
Congratulations Class of 2016!
Graduation Ceremonies will be held
Saturday, May 21, 2015, at 4:00 P.M.
in the Canton Memorial Civic Center
North Canton City Schools salutes our graduating seniors. We wish you
all the best as you continue on to college, careers or military service.

A Calculated Success
BY TRENT CASH
With brains prepared and calculators
charged, the North Canton Middle
School Math Team, Math Counts,
achieved great success this season,
placing first in the region and 12th
overall in Ohio.
“Students in Math Counts practice
twice a week starting in the fall,” Coach
Daphne Pavlik said. “A qualifying exam
is taken to see who will compete at
the regional competition. The team is
comprised of only 4 students so it is a
very elite and prestigious responsibility.”
The four students chosen to compete
this year were Ricky Park, Pasindu
Wanigarathne, Tresor Nshimiye, and
John Waterhouse.

VISION
Jeff Wendorf
SUPERINTENDENT
NORTH CANTON CITY SCHOOLS
Many people have asked why I
came to North Canton. The short
answer is, because this is a great
community and I wanted to be a part
of it!
My passion is continuous growth
and improvement, and my style is
that of a servant leader. Together,
we will determine where we need to
go, and my role is to empower the
NCCS team to be successful in the
pursuit of organizational excellence.
How do we begin? The last time
this district completed a strategic
planning initiative was in 2008.
It is time for us to come together
once more and determine what is
important to us and who we want to
be; what are our mission, vision and
values. This will take place in four
stages, starting immediately.
I have been a part of successful
strategic planning initiatives in the
past and have seen the fruits of this
labor bloom into amazing support,
accomplishment and advancement
for students, staff and community
alike.
I am excited to begin this journey
with you and am committed to doing
all I can do to ensure the success of
this team – which includes all of you.
I have an open door policy and you
are welcome in my office any time.
Together, we are Viking Strong!

Stage 1: Gather Input (late Spring/Summer 2016)
We will be conducting focus groups and surveys of our staff, parents, community and
students to gather as much input and feedback as possible. These are our stakeholders,
and all have an important say in our school district’s future.
Stage 2: Strategic Plan (Fall, 2016)
We will combine the input we gather with the district’s financial information,
achievement results and performance evidence. Through large group discussion
with stakeholder representatives, we will complete an analysis of our district’s strengths,
weaknesses, opportunities and threats. From this, we will determine our improvement
areas, or strategic objectives, and our mission, vision and values.
Each year school districts throughout Ohio
participate in an effort to identify, locate and
evaluate all children with disabilities, birth through
21. A disability means there are conditions such
as a multi-handicap, hearing, visual, orthopedic
and/or other health handicap, severe behavior
disorder and/or speech/language handicap.
Many times children with disabilities are not
visible because they do not function in the
mainstream of a community. Parents are not
always aware that there are programs and
services available for these children.
Stage 3: “Futures” Conference (Winter, 2016-17)
If you know of a child who may have one
or more of the above suspected disabilities,
including preschool age children, please contact
the Special Services Office at (330) 497-5665.
Currently, the district’s expenses are higher than our revenue. To safeguard our ability
to finance the district’s future, our immediate finance plan is to reduce expenses
by $2.6M over the next three years. Once we’ve completed our strategic planning
process, our finance plan will be revised and presented to the community to ensure
we are able to support our collective vision moving forward.
**Informational brochures are available at all
North Canton Schools, area preschools,
and the North Canton Public Library.
We will hold a series of stakeholder meetings to consider the future of education and its
current state, and then deliberate what our community desires for the future of
our district. Marrying our strategic objectives with a clear understanding of where we
see ourselves in the future, together we will craft a specific plan on how to get there.
This plan will guide our academic services, the development of our facilities, and
the finances we will need to support both.

Viking Victory Run Raises Over $18,000 for NCCS
BY ANNIE MALLAMACI
THANK YOU! The annual Viking Victory Run, held on April 17, consisted of a 5K Run and Competitive Walk, 1 Mile Fun Run, and 1 Lap Little Vikes Run. This year’s
event had 1,149 participants and raised over $18,000 that will be donated to the PTOs of North Canton City Schools. Over the past five years, the Viking Victory
Run has raised a total of just under $100,000. Thank you to all the organizers, sponsors and participants of this event and for supporting North Canton City Schools!

Second Graders Perform Musicals

Clearmount first grade teacher
Mrs. Ward re-invented her math
class using an NEA Foundation
grant she applied for and received.
Using her Everyday Math
materials as well as new items
purchased with the grant, Ward
set up individualized stations with
different games and group work to
get students excited about math.
Results? Recently, they had
a substitute teacher - when they
returned, there was a note from
the sub stating, “They are MATH
WIZARDS!”
STAFF WRITER
Last month, Northwood second
grade students performed in “Seussical,”
a musical tribute to the legendary
children’s author Dr. Seuss.
The students performed in front of a
full house at Hoover High School with
songs like “Oh, the Thinks You Can
Think,” “It’s Possible,” and “Green Eggs
and Ham.” The second grade students
were directed by Melanie Mesmer,
Northwood Music Teacher.
Clearmount second graders also
performed to a packed Hoover Hall
last month. Directed by Clearmount
music teacher Kim Jacoby, the students
performed the musical “Let’s Eat!”
The musical features six original
songs and dialogue celebrating food.
The students sang and danced to
numbers like “The Fast Food Tango,”
“My Banana Split,” and “Grandma’s
Pretty Good Chicken Pot Pie,” during
which “Grandma” chased a “chicken”
through the audience, with the intent to
serve him up!
Overall, the second graders enjoyed
the experience of performing on the
stage at Hoover Hall. Mesmer and Jacoby
view the musicals as opportunities for
the students to express their creativity
and showcase the hard work they do in
music class each day.

NCMS TomTod Project: Kids Keeping Kids Healthy
STORY AND PHOTO BY REGAN WORSTELL
It isn’t every day two seventh grade
boys work so diligently to keep kids
healthier at their school.
Kyle Kopp and Nic Landy, now eighth
graders, took advantage of TomTod
Ideas to implement filtered water bottle
refilling stations in the middle school.
Kopp and Landy heard about
TomTod through their seventh grade
Discover teacher, Mrs. Lisa Ile, who
encouraged them to apply for some of
the available projects.
The TomTod organization’s mission
is to empower Stark County middle
school students to launch out-of-the-box
ideas that promote the common good.
“She told us about the program

refilling station. The
station was installed at
NCMS this year as part of
their “Nutrition Mission”
project work with TomTod

in class,” Kopp said. “I went home
and applied right away for Nutrition
Mission.”
Kopp felt students were not staying
hydrated throughout the day. His
solution was to implement a water bottle
refilling station that provided easy access
to water throughout the day.
Implementing this idea was not as
easy they thought.
“The biggest obstacle in getting the
stations was raising the money,” Kopp
said. “The NCMS Parent Group and the
Hoover Sideliners helped tremendously
with this problem and we were able to
raise enough to buy the stations.”
Staff and students are grateful for
the students’ tenacity and for TomTod’s
help in making this project a reality.
“Students love the stations for after
school sports as well as staying hydrated
throughout the day,” Kopp explained.
“Teachers use the stations as well, and
they are always in use!”

Groovy Success
BY REGAN WORSTELL
As if Fridays are not great already,
Greentown Elementary has found a
way to make them even better. On the
second Friday of each month, families
are encouraged to send in photos of their
weekend activities to share, whether it is
eating a slice of pizza, playing a board
game or competing in sports.
Principal Ryan Kumpf believes that
families impact schools in numerous
ways. “We believe that strong families
make strong schools and we continually
talk about how Greentown is an
extension of the family,” Kumpf said.
Utilizing social media’s power of
connecting people, Kumpf’s goal is to
have Greentown families feel like they
are a part of something much bigger.
Once families send in their photos,
Kumpf posts all of the photos he
received on Greentown’s social media
tagged with #familyfocusfriday.
Over 79 volunteers, made up of staff,
family and students, made Northwood’s
Right-to-Read Week and Scholastic Book
Fair a huge success this year.
This year’s theme was “Feelin’
Groovy~Peace, Love, Books!” and special
activities throughout the week included
Mellow Yellow Monday, Tie Dye Groovy
Tuesday, Peaceful Pajama Thursday and
Character Parade Day.
Special guest readers included North
Canton Mayor David Held and athletes
from Walsh University.

The Hoover Art Department was
chosen to compete in the annual Vans
Custom Culture art contest. Hoover
students designed one pair of Vans
shoes for the following categories: action
sports, art, music, and local flavor.
Junior Art 3 student Caiya SanchezStrauss designed a pair of Vans for the
contest.
“I designed the local flavor pair,”
Sachez-Strauss said. “My idea was based
on the Rust Belt because Canton is
kind of an old industrialized city and I
thought that accurately represented this
area.”
Hoover’s artwork is currently being
judged by the Vans Company, and is
in the running to win $50,000 for the
school’s Art Department.
An Alternate Avenue for Graduates
STORY & PHOTO BY TRENT CASH
While some high school students see
college as a mandatory next step in the
education process, it may not be right
for all students. With this in mind,
Hoover High School math teacher Mrs.
Malissa Dalton invited a series of local
employers to speak to her Algebra II
Survey classes.
Students heard presentations from
various branches of the military, First
Energy Contact Center, Cintas, and
many more. These companies all offer
entry-level positions to students directly
out of high school. Job opportunities
range from meter readers to warehouse
employees to call center representatives
and beyond.
Dalton sees these opportunities as
quality career options for her students
that pay above the minimum wage paid
by many jobs offered to teenagers.
“These career opportunities benefit
our students by providing them with
different options for their future,”
Dalton said. “My goal is to make them
aware of some of the opportunities that
are available for them.”

“I was so proud when the team
worked together to achieve the highest
standing in the competition,” Pavlik
said. “I have never seen a group of
more dedicated students work together
so efficiently and achieve the level of
success that they did.”
Amid the competition, however, the
students truly enjoy the work that they
do, seeing it as an opportunity to spend
beneficial to the companies as well.
Alan Michel, the general manager from
First Energy, the second speaker in the
series, sees hiring local students as a way
to keep his company from outsourcing.
“We’re doing the right thing to
keep local jobs in the Akron-Canton
area,” Michel said when speaking to the
students. “I’m not trying to discourage
college, but if college isn’t for you, then
this might be something to consider.”
Dalton added, “If the students make
good choices with these employers they
can go far and exceed even their own
expectations.”

Hoover Choirs Compete in NYC
In April, the Hoover Symphonic
Choir and Women’s Chorale, under the
direction of Patricia Grewell, traveled
to New York City to sing in the World
Strides Heritage Festival, earning silver
ratings on the national scale.
Not only did the students compete,
but they also got to explore New York.
They saw The Today Show, toured Radio
City Musical Hall and the 9/11 Museum
and Memorial, set sail on a dinner
cruise, and saw two Broadway musicals,
“On Your Feet!” and “Waitress.”
Symphonic Choir member Kristin
Reynolds commented, “My favorite part

“You can improve your math skills
but you can also have fun with your
friends,” said Park, who also placed 15th
in the state individually. “You have to
work with your team to finish all the
questions.”
“[My favorite part is how] you
take kids who are already excelling in
mathematics and challenge them a step
further, provoking implementation of
quick reasoning and more complex
ideas,” Nshimiye agreed. “That is what I
think is special about Math Club.
Pavlik said, “I was so pleased to
see them challenging each other and
pushing each other to the limit in
preparation for the competition.”

Orchard Hill received a grant from
Arts in Stark to incorporate graphic
design instruction into the intermediate
level standards at Orchard Hill.
Fifth grade students were asked to
sketch an animal first on paper, then
uploaded the sketch to their Google
Chromebooks. Arts in Stark Artist,
Dillon Sedar, taught the students how to
utilize various tools from the graphic art
program called Pixlr Express to redesign
their original sketch.
“This was a wonderful opportunity

Around the District
District Finance Plan Reduces Spending
Todd Tolson
TREASURER, NCCS
The primary goal I
have for our district is to
provide the maximum services to
our students, staff and community
within the resources available.
We constantly monitor revenues
received from the State of Ohio based
on our enrollment, our community
from levies based on property values
and a small amount from the federal
government in the form of grants.
Typically, the only way we receive
additional resources is either from
increased student enrollment, or
from passage of a local levy.
The majority of our expenses are
our staff because we are a people
business. Our “little” people are
the students we educate every day
in our district. The “big” people
are the chauffeurs of our big yellow
limousines who safely get our students
to and from school, our master chefs
who provide nutritious meals daily,
our educators who are pouring
knowledge into our students, our
managers who create vision for how
to prepare our students, as well as all
of the other support staff who make
our students the best they can be.
Our current plan is to reduce $2.6
million over the next three years to
maintain the educational process
of our district. With this plan, we
believe we will continue to offer
maximum services to our students,
staff and community within the
resources available.
Hats off to Teaching Excellence
STAFF WRITER
Each year, North Canton City Schools honors one veteran teacher and one
“rookie” (less than five years as a teacher), as NCCS Teacher and Rookie of the Year.
These teachers also represent our district at the Education Celebration, hosted by
the Stark County Educational Service Center.
This year, the tribute went to Mrs. Tamara Ledgerwood, in her fourteenth year
with the district, and Miss Sara Snyder, a second-year teacher. Both teachers are from
Orchard Hill and were recommended by Principal Renee Manse.
“Those who have been fortunate enough to have had Mrs. Ledgerwood know
she is not just a teacher, she is a hero to many,” said Manse. “She explains, she
demonstrates, she inspires. Most importantly, Mrs. Ledgerwood’s students know
how much she truly cares about them.”
Manse went on to praise Snyder. “Miss Snyder has gone above and beyond to
volunteer for countless programs that help enrich the lives of our students. Her
educational journey has just begun and I am excited to watch her grow to be an
outstanding educational leader.”

Summertime District Improvements
Todd Henne
DIRECTOR OF BUSINESS, NCCS
Summer break signals
the time for much
needed summer maintenance and
improvements across the district’s
seven school buildings, totaling
680,000 square feet of indoor space.
Many of the improvements will
be behind the scenes, but these are
just as important to serve our over
4,600 students and staff. At Hoover
High School, a domestic 4” cold
water main line will be replaced.
This main line is original to the 1976
construction, and is a total length of
over 600 feet. Other improvements at
Hoover include new security cameras
and DVR’s to replace those installed
in 1997 that are inoperable now.
The North Canton Middle
School will have the gymnasium
bleachers replaced. The new
bleachers will meet current ADA
code and provide a much safer
environment for our students,
parents
and
grandparents
attending events there throughout
the year.
Other summer jobs are still
in the bid process and will be
approved pending available funds.
Each year, effort is made to make
asphalt repairs and replace carpet
in select areas in the district.
Also, a few employees are given
a summer contract each year to
paint classrooms and outside
spaces to keep the schools looking
sharp each year for our students.
Congratulations 2016 District Retirees

What inspired you to become a teacher?
2016 - 2017 District Calendar
“I actually started my college studies as a communication major. Although, I
liked the classes, I just did not feel a connection in that field. After the first
semester, I changed my major to education, and never looked back. I have
always enjoyed working with children and helping them learn.”
August
What is one of your favorite teaching moments?
“I have the opportunity to witness my favorite teaching moment every day. My
favorite teaching moment is when students suddenly understand a concept
they had previously struggled to grasp. I love seeing that “aha” moment, and
the excitement on their faces! It’s priceless!”
In your opinion, what is the secret to being a good teacher?
“1. Be your best every day!
2. Inspire students to do their best every day!
3. Build a rapport with your students.
