What is this project all about?
This week will be all about the Middle Ages. In the previous weeks, you studied the Middle
Ages in your history lessons and you talked about crusades in religious education classes.
This week we will cover the Middle Ages in various ways.
We will spend one day on several assignments about the book “Kruistocht in Spijkerbroek”
by Thea Beckman and the movie “Crusade in Jeans”. The other days will be devoted to the
arts, we will walk through Zutphen searching for medieval remains and “visit” some Holy
Places of the Dark Ages.
On Thursday, there will be a Sports Day.
Keep all your assignments in a portfolio!
Your mentor will give you an assessment form to keep track of all your assignments. You
have to put this form in a folder (snelhechter), and bring it with you every day. Whenever you
finish an assignment, you ask your teacher to judge your work.

Assignment 3
In the part of the book you have just read a boy from the Middle Ages travels to our modern
times. Imagine what will happen if he arrives in the lab of the two scientists. Describe this in a
story of 300 words, which you hand to your group members after you have finished your part.
The story should fit into the events you have read about.
It works like this:
1 member of the group writes the first two sentences and passes the paper to the next
member of the group. He or she reds the lines and adds two lines and passes it on until the
story is finished.

Assignment 4
Read the following text. This is on the rear side of the book.
The rear side of the book has two purposes. You get a first impression of the contents of the
book and it makes you curious after the whole book. The text at the rear side of Crusade in
jeans does tell something about the contents but does not really make you curious. It also
involves information which is not that important to know in the beginning. Besides that the
text is not very easy to read.
Your assignment is to re write the rear side of the book in a way the reader gets to know the
contents and gets curious.
Discuss in your group want should be in the text. Then every group member writes his or her
own text. When you are all finished you put the results together and mix them into one text.
Assignment 5
To make the book into a movie
You have read how Dolf ended up in the Middle Ages. When books are made into a movie
the story often changes a bit. This can have all kind of reasons. For example to make it
more exciting or because the story is too long. Sometimes there are too many events in the
book to use in the movie.

Watch the piece of the movie in which Dolf is travelling into the past. After that you
have to answer the questions.
1. The piece of the movie that you have watched is to promote the movie. It is called a
trailer. It is used to give you a first impression of the movie and it makes you curious
after the rest.
a. What is your first impression of the movie? Explain your answer
b. Which different situations have your seen?
c. Are you curious after the rest of the movie after seeing this trailer.
2. You have read extracts from the book. While reading you get all kinds of images in
your head. Does the film in your head look a it the same as the parts of the movie you
have seen just now?
3. Compare the events in the texts of assignment 2 with the events in the movie.
a. What are the similarities?
b. What are the differences?
4. What do you prefer: the parts of the assignment 2 or the parts of the movie? Explain
your answer.

zoek naar figuranten in de leeftijd 12 tot 15 jaar die mee willen spelen in deel 2 van de film
“Kruistocht in spijkerbroek”. Het verdient aanbeveling als je al enige ervaring hebt met

Imagine a new ending of the film………..
You watched the film “Crusade in jeans”. The film has a happy ending, but it can also end in
a different way. Imagine you are a film director and you may decide how it will end. Write in
about 500 words your version of the end of the film. Everything is possible, but you have to
be sure that it has to be different from the real film.

alles betekende en dat hijzelf aan invloed had verloren door nicolaas
de kans te geven zich met koninklijke eretekenen te behangen

Middelnederlands – de taal van de middeleeuwen
In de middeleeuwen had men behalve veel andere, mindere gebruiksvoorwerpen, manier
van leven, werken, enz. natuurlijk ook een andere taal dan de taal die wij nu spreken, het
Nederlands. Het Nederlands is voortgekomen uit het Middelnederlands (Diets, denk aan
Deutsch en Dutch). In de middeleeuwen konden niet alle mensen deze taal spreken,
schrijven en lezen, maar alleen de adelen (mensen uit de hoge stand). Om jullie eens kennis
te laten maken met deze taal, staan hieronder een aantal woorden in het Middelnederlands
met hun betekenis in het Nederlands zoals wij dat nu kennen.

Holy Places
Today you will be working together on the project ‘Holy Places.’ The
groups have already been formed in your Religious Education classes. It
would be a good idea to sit in your groups right from the beginning today.
Do your best to work well together. Cooperation is just as important as the
finished result. If you have any problems in your group, speak to the
teacher who is helping you with this project today.
Now…what will you be doing today? Your group will be working on several different tasks
which have to do with your holy place. In order to complete the tasks, each group will have
access to a computer. Also, each group will receive information packages with clippings of
articles about your holy place. In your presentation at the end of the day, you need to have
used at least one clipping and one book as a source of information….not just internet sites!
Here are the tasks for today:
1. POWERPOINT PRESENTATION
You will create a presentation using PowerPoint, about your holy place. Information about
where it is, how many people lived there in the Middle Ages, what holy and/or important
buildings are there, why it was – and is – important, what makes it holy and what takes place
there (processions, rituals, celebrations) should be included in your presentation. Remember
to make a separate Word document with your sources (where you found your documents
and pictures.) Please send your ppt to your RE teacher as well.
2. MAP
What did your holy city look like in the Middle Ages? Try and make a true-to-life drawing of
the roads and street plan of the city and its surroundings, showing important buildings and
places of interest.
3. SHORT PLAY
You will create and act out the story of your holy city. What and/or who made it holy? This is
the subject of your short drama piece or role play. Start out by giving everyone a role. You
may decide to choose one person as a story-teller while the others act or, you can give
everyone a role. Work out your roles, ideas and text on paper before practicing. Your
audience is made up of Christians in the Middle Ages.
4. FINALE
PUT IT TOGETHER. After having worked on 1, 2, and 3 above, now you will have a chance
to present your results to the class! GOOD LUCK AND HAVE FUN!!!
