Round 12 - Westbrook
PRESIDENT’S REPORT – Round 12
Sunday 13th July 2014
A big week with the Rep carnival and luckily no home games to set up! Many teams had an extended holiday with
byes, but this weekend will see many teams returning to Mike Kenny. Anyway, this week’s newsletter is very much
about the huge week for the Westbrook Junior Football Club. We hosted the best Youth footballers in Sydney and
the eyes of the AFL world were upon us. It was a resounding success and we can be proud of way we go about things.
GSJ Representative Carnival 8th -11th July - Mike Kenny Oval
During the second week of the July school holidays, over 500 players and 2,000 supporters made their way to
Cherrybrook for the Sydney Harbour AFL Youth Representative Carnival.
Congratulations to all players representing the Northwest during the week and a big thankyou to all the helpers. We
had a very successful week and hopefully we get the opportunity to host again next year. It takes a lot of people to
get a game of footy going, and a rep carnival requires just a few more! Our club could not host these junior football
opportunities successfully without the hard work of many people. AFL GSJ, Regional Committee, Westbrook
Committee, umpires, clubs, parents and our local Hornsby Council made a terrific contribution.

It was fantastic to see both fields in operation for youth football and we were lucky enough to have had a visit from
our Mayor Steve Russell who now shares our vision that all of Greenway Park longer term should be a centre of
excellence for AFL.
From the chart below (number of games won), clearly something pretty good is happening with our North West
region. Interestingly, a different Sydney Harbour region claimed the honours on each day.

We saw some great action last week and it was expertly
captured by Leigh Gazzard who volunteered his services during
the event. Leigh has also taken photos this year for the AFL

Swans Visit – This Sunday!
As the top of the table Swans have a well-earned bye, we are lucky enough to have some of them visit us this Sunday
as part of their community clubs commitment.
Mike Kenny, Sunday 27th July, 9.30-12.00pm
The players will take autographs, help with drills and be team runners for the morning. Please make them feel
welcome.
Multicultural Round
THE Australian Football League launched the 2014 AFL Multicultural Round at the Many Cultures, One Game
breakfast held in Melbourne at MAIÀ.
The Multicultural round of the Toyota AFL Premiership season will celebrate 'Many Cultures, One Game', highlighting
the contribution multicultural communities make to Australia's Game at all levels, as well as the ongoing initiatives
across the AFL to engage with new communities and potential fans.
AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan said that a record number of activities across the round would include a national campaign
called My Passport to Australian Football to encourage potential new fans to enjoy the experience of attending an
AFL match.
"Australian Football has the extraordinary power to bring people together regardless of background," Mr McLachlan
said.
AFL 9s – 9 per side Spring/Summer Competition
In the off season, cricketers can play Indoor, budding Socceroos can play Futsal, and Rugby Joeys can play Touch.
Now AFL has an off season program to keep your skills and fitness up with AFL 9s!
AFL 9s is the AFL's newest game. It's a fast, free-flowing game that involves 9 players on
each team playing on a smaller field. Best of all, it's mixed 'touch football' with no tackling
or bumping, making it suitable for people of any age or skill level.
The initial comp formats being proposed will be:
7-10 year olds- (2014 season Under 9’s and 10’s or older age Auskickers)
10-12 year olds- (2014 season Under 11’s and 12’s)
The anticipated dates are from Monday 8th September 2014 - Monday 15th December
2014 with the exception of Monday 22nd September, Monday 29th September and Monday 7th October. We are
just waiting on confirmation for the venue which we should have shortly.
Registration details to follow, but for the meantime, talk to you teammates and start gaining some interest. You
don’t have to be playing currently to qualify, so recruit a mate as well.
This is not Westbrook run, so feel free to create your own teams. That said, Westbrook will support you with any
needs.
GIRLS AFL 2015 - Register your Interest
Although we didn’t get a Girls AFL team going in 2014, if we get enough interest before the season end, we will
commit to a team in 2015. How will this happen?

Newsletter Coordinator - Vacancy
To help some of the committee’s work load, we are hoping someone from our club can assist with collating the
newsletter each week. You don’t have to write anything! The newsletter features my introduction, adds the match
reports from each team, and the sponsor logos at the end. The main thing is making sure the formatting is
consistent. Let me know if you can contribute a little of your time. Email [email protected] for more

AUSKICK (5- 8 years)
Greenway 2
This week we hosted Hornsby to play in the Under 8s comp and 15 of the Westbrook Auskickers had the opportunity
to test their skills during 3 thirteen minute thirds. It was a very competitive game and great to have so many
Westbrook kids keen to get involved in the competition.
The Auskickers got warmed up with a game of cat and mouse or rather Swannies and Bombers chasing each other to
the opposite line. Then we tested our handball skills against a runner with the runner racing around the circle as the
kids passed the ball around. Moving onto some drills, the kids enjoyed kicking the ball from the cone getting used to
watching their boot connect with the ball. As confidence grew so did the run up to the ball, not necessarily
improving the kick. Luckily for the kids it was a dry morning as the next drill required them to run onto the ball, roll
on the ground, jump back up and handball to the coach. We then practiced taking a leap in the air as if taking a
mark, with some kids jumping way higher than others.
On to the game, and there was some outstanding play again this week, with lots of the kids showing a huge
improvement in their confidence to get in and have a go. They all moved through each of the zones giving them all
the opportunity to play various positions on the field. There were some great battles for the ball as the kids were
keen to get a kick and even a goal. There were some skilful goals this week and awards were given to Rhys, Parker,
Samuel, Cameron, Aiden, Lachlan and Jack for their determination, improvement and skills on the day.
This weekend we are playing Pennant Hills @ Westbrook with an 8:40 arrival for 9am kickoff. I currently have 5
places available so please let me know if your child would like to play. The Auskick session will be run as normal at
9am. Three Swannies players will be visiting this week so please stay around after the game and get an autograph or
three.
Next week, 27th July the U8s are playing at St Ives however we have club photos this weekend so I would appreciate
if the U8s could return to Westbrook after their game for 10:15 Auskick Photo. Every player will receive a team
photo and it will also be in the club yearbook. This is included in the fees that you have already paid.

UNDER 8s Auskick vs Hornsby
Greenway 2
Westbrook Auskickers hosted the Hornsby Football club on Sunday in warm, sunny conditions. The first quarter saw
our Westbrook team get off to a strong start with Andrew providing a target up forward. Harry took many marks and
was almost impossible to get pass in the centre of the ground. Louis and Hunter again played strong games and used
their long kicking to the team’s advantage. Eddie and Zac were good when the ball hit the ground. The second
quarter was an even affair with each team trading goals. Fin followed up last week’s good form with some strong
marking in the forward line. The last quarter saw the Bulldogs challenged by Hornsby but they defended really well.
Ryan, Thomas and Charlie led the defence and Lucas was providing plenty of drive out of the middle.
Again I would like to thank Zac, Fin and Hugh for volunteering to play a quarter each for Hornsby which enabled
everyone to play a full game.
Player of the Week was awarded to Andrew for his dashing runs through the forward line and a fantastic goal.

With clear skies at Rouse Hill, the wind prevailed with that chill factor only to be found at Perisher. The Westbrook
team was led onto the field by coach Simon. Lucas was excited to be chosen for team captain. Our boys were all
excited to be back grouped as one, the previous week being school holidays, we were a few players short.
The first quarter we saw great kicks and marks from Seth, Corey, Cade and Harry. Good tackling skills from Matthew,
Charlie, Harrison, and Henry. Ethan worked hard with his kicking skills.
Lucas, Jordan, Jake and James worked really hard in defence. Westbrook boys are really learning how to apply
pressure on their opponent when they don't have the ball, their tackling and defensive pressure today was
outstanding.
Westbrook have definitely progressed as a team and their tackling and kicking skills will only improve in the next
game.

UNDER 9 REDs vs Pennant Hills Demons U9
Ern Holmes Oval
A delayed start for the Westbrook U9 Reds with the First Aid officer being late for the start of the game. The boys
had a great round playing well as a team.
The game kicked off to a strong start with Callan scoring the opening goal. The majority of the first quarter was
played at the opposition’s goal end with the team working well together to defend the team’s position.
There was great work in offence with the majority of the boys having a go at scoring. Alex, Bailey and Oscar worked
well to keep the ball in play, taking some excellent marks and scoring a few goals.
Thomas, Malachi, Kalan, Miles and Fin showed great skill with a combination of running the ball up the field, taking
some excellent marks and tackling the opponents to win the ball for their team. Kyle and Raza worked well to
defend, tackle and facilitate some great plays for the team.
In the last quarter Joshua did well to stay on his feet despite a challenging tackle.
It was a great game for the Westbrook Reds with all the boys displaying great sportsmanship and team spirit!
A big thank you to Thomas for being the team captain and congratulations to Travis on receiving the player of the
match award!

After our opposition forfeited last week we were champing at the bit for a game of footy. We travelled to Kellyville
this week and although it was cold had perfect conditions for our game.
We had a team goal this week for the midfield to work really hard up and down the ground helping trap the ball in
the forward line to create scoring opportunities and run back to help the defence when we lost possession. Cooper,
Ben, Jack and Jasper put the plan into action applying plenty of pressure in the first quarter to give us forward
entries. We had a few chances and kicked inaccurately for a couple of points but eventually Jackson found his range
and kicked the only goal for the quarter. Our backline held firm with Damien sweeping across half back and Patrick
and new recruit Angus using their pace to run the ball back into the middle.
We seemed to pick up the pace in the second half with Angus and Jasper combining well in the forward line. Liam
and Patrick provided some bustling work around the contest and Jack and Damien provided run into the forward
line. Angus and Jasper zipped around centre half forward providing plenty of leads and managed to get on top of the
Kellyville back line. Their speed and long kicking was a particularly dangerous with Angus kicking one and Jasper two
goals for the quarter.
The boys really started to find their groove in the third quarter with some nice running support play. We had
practiced our running handball drills and kicking quickly out of contest at training and the boys really put it into
action. Popping handballs to team mates running past created lots of opportunities to get into space and keep
possession. The highlight of the quarter was Kieran and Jackson wrapping up Kellyville in a fierce tackle to force a
turnover, Jasper handballed out to Angus flying past on the wing and kicked long into the Ben who marked in the
pocket, Ben kicked into the pack where Patrick scooped the ball up twisted and turned to slot it through. Angus again
cut the forward line up with his second goal of the game.
The last quarter was an arm wrestle played mostly in our forward line. With the Powerhouse centreline of Jackson,
Jack and Jasper and Angus the ball was coming into the forward line with plenty of speed. However Kellyville were
not going to make it easy and defended well shutting down a lot of our scoring shots. Liam took a couple of
impressive marks during the quarter and Cooper threw himself into some tough contests. Eventually we pushed
Damien into the goal square to lead up to the ball, he got his chance running onto a ground ball and typically dodged
and weaved around the square to score our last goal of the game.
Although some of the team were missing today all of the boys played hard and competed well. It was fantastic to
have Angus in our team for the first time and look forward to having his explosive run and silky skills back in the team
next week. Jackson captained the side well with his usual polished performance around the ground and stirring
motivational speeches to the team. Jack won our player of the day imposing his customary Bulldog pressure on the
opposition and run around the ground.

This round the Doggies played against Baulkham Hills Hawks team at the Hawks' home ground. We were down a
player and were fortunate enough to borrow from the Hawks team.
Lucas was captain this week, supporting his team all the way.
We started in the first quarter playing well but, unfortunately, the other team kicked some great goals. The boys had
strong defense and their tackling was great.
By the second half the Doggies were really getting the game together and all boys were playing at their best.... And
we caught up to the Hawks!
Excellent kicking, defending and sportsmanship....
Well done to all the boys for another great game and good encouragement from this week's captain, Lucas....
Well done boys!

writing to say how impressed I was with the Westbrook U11 Reds' Captain. He busted a gut during the game and we
had to use a tagger on him for 3 quarters as a result. Despite losing he was graceful and sporting in congratulating

Westbrook 5.6-36 vs 14.6-90
It was great to be back into footy today after the two-week break for the holidays. The match with the so far
undefeated East Sydney at their home ground was going to be a tough assignment based on the earlier clash this
season. The stage was set at a dusty and dry Trumper Park for the battle and when the song ‘Who let the dogs out’
blasted on the PA we knew the boys were in for a real challenge.
Straight from the first bounce East Sydney showed they were going to contest the ball hard and move it wide. The
boys responded by manning up and were able to move the ball well down the park with Matt doing a pinpoint kick to
Jack who was able to finish it off for a goal. At the first change there was three points in the match.
The second and third quarters could best be described as a goal fest to East Sydney who blasted a number of
unanswered goals. A bright spot during this part of the match was the goal scored by Xander from broken play.
After a stirring talk at three quarter time by Senior Head Coach Wade and President Paul about the importance of
never giving up and respecting the jumper, the boys came out with renewed enthusiasm to finish the match strong.
The boys battled hard and there were casualties with Declan, Jarrod and Tom having to finish the match on the
sideline. Braeden put through two scorchers and was joined by Hayden with another goal to see Westbrook finish
the game on a positive note.
Boys, a tough game against quality opposition who we know are the benchmark for the competition. Let’s train hard
this week and hear the Westbrook song next weekend.

UNDER 15s vs Riverview Blue U15
Riverview No 4
Westbrook 9.14-68 vs 5.8-38
Riverview Blue had their normal issues around school holidays and getting the required numbers, but they kindly
informed us they had secured some rugby players so we could have a legitimate game (more of the rugby players
later).
The first quarter was tight, with each team securing loose ball and scoring limited goals. Our first goal started with
Bailey who kicked it long to Nathaniel, flicked it back to Max who put it through the big posts. Daniel demonstrated
the determination for the team when he chased and tacked a Riverview player and got the free for his ball and all
tackle. Rofey in attack mode, demonstrated great courage with eyes for the ball only, put his head over ball and beat
his opposition to secure it.
Back into defence Preston saves a certain goal, taking the ball at speed just before the line and deftly sends the ball
to the boundary line with no calls for a deliberate. From the ball up, we managed to move the ball forward with
Lawrence taking a mark right on the 50 m line, unfortunately it was touched on the line and it was a behind. In
defence again, Jack kicks to Lawrence, then to Bailey, then back to Lawrence, ably assisted with great shepherding
from Pravin who then sends the ball to Asees who kicks our second goal – a coast to coast goal!
In a magnificent demonstration of 2nd and 3rd efforts, Jacob completed his first tackle, got up and tackled another
player and got up again and completed his third tackle in a matter of a minute. As I mentioned above, Riverview had
some rugby players helping them out, Preston put so much pressure on a Riverview rugby that when the player went
to kick for goal, the player thought he kicked a goal when it was a behind.
During one attacking raid, a Riverview player kicked the ball straight to Bailey who happily returns the ball for a goal
whilst Asees is being treated for a saw ankle. The ball was being run by Riverview in the middle of the park with
Nathaniel steaming in to put on a big bump on the opposition. Unfortunately, he missed the Riverview player and
collected Max, who took a little while to remember the registration number of the truck that hit him. Max was back
into it with a great run over 60 metres, with superb shepherding from Daniel to clear a path for him to run,
unfortunately, the umpire pinged him for running too far just before he went to kick a goal. The team were in
defence mode, with Bailey in the backs kicks to Lawrence who has to contest the ball, with Nathaniel tackling the ball
carrier and Mitchell scoops up the ball on the run and slots a bending kick for a goal. Lawrence kicks to Jacob and
Nathaniel who literally runs right through his opposition then gets the ball back to Lawrence, then Tyler uses his
speed to take a great mark passes the ball to Chris who scores another goal.
At half time, Coach Greg asks the players to lift again, they are capable of so much more – he asks ‘do you a spray?’
to which Nathaniel asks what is a spray? Did our language change that much in a generation?
Another coast to coast goal starts with Pravin acting as goal keeper and saving a definite goal, he then kicks to a
contest with Max coming up with ball and he runs and dribbles a goal from around 40m. Quickly back in attack, Alex
takes a great mark 40m out from the line, he goes back and kicks…it’s long and high but a Riverview players leaps to
stop another goal being scored.
The last quarter saw our efforts lift markedly, the stand out being our backs who made sure any Riverview attacking
efforts came to nothing.
Goals: Max Mackenzie 4, Bailey Miedler 2, Mitchell Blow 1, Chris Rofe 1, Asees Rajput 1.
UNDER 17s Div 3 vs Mosman/Willoughby U17 Div 3
Middle Head Oval
Westbrook 15.7-97 vs 4.5-29
After a 3 week layoff due to holidays and a forfeit the Dogs (and their coaches ) were itching to play on a windy, dry
Middle Head Oval. Playing with the wind the boys got out of the starting blocks quickly with Justin bagging the first of
3 goals for the opening term from a tight angle in the left pocket. We welcomed Anthony from Hornsby who showed
his class early with strong hands and direct kicking to find Aussie on a strong lead that lead to another goal. Mikey
Fiedler was dominating the contested ball and when not racking up disposals was busy smothering the opposition
attempts to clear their 50. Recent coaching on the need to go back to go forward was exemplified by Matt Rofe,
whose handball gave Matt Rash the opportunity to snap just inside the goal post. At the back Stanton showed his
usual skill and desperation to clear our defence.
Heading back into the breeze in the second term, the boys kept their foot on the accelerator. Playing with a free
license at the back Cooper took a magnificent defensive mark in the goal square to deny the Swans. Typifying our
hard running style Liam’s long handpass released Aiden for a penetrating run down the right wing before he kicked
with intent to the hot spot for Justin to mark for his 4th goal. Showing strong hands and great anticipation across half
back Michael Pearson found Gunner on the attacking 50. Gunner went back and kicked truly into the wind for the
first of 3 goals for the day. Matt Rash was dominating the ruck, allowing Gunner, Aiden and Mikey F to take the ball
forward from the bounce almost at will. A long direct kick from Anthony then released Cooper who put the ball on
Nick’s chest whereby he was given a 50 metre penalty to goal from in front. Another goal soon followed for Nick
after a great switch from Justin from right pocket to left.
Rofey was switched into the ruck contest for the 3rd term and took no time to fire a quick hand ball to Gunner who
used great vision to square for Anthony to kick his first goal in the Bulldogs jumper. Pushing forward Rash then
hooked a kick into the hot spot for Nick to kick the 3rd of his 4 goal tally. The Swans lifted toward the end on the
term to put some pressure on our back line. Dominic showed good strong hands to diffuse a long kick in the back left
pocket before switching to Gunner and transition smoothly into attack. G Unit and Matt Morris were working hard at
ground level in defence and were justly rewarded with free kicks when putting their body over the ball.
After avoiding the mercy rule in the 3rd term the Swans came out hard in the last quarter to kick the first goal. Once
again Mikey F showed great courage in the contest to allow Gunner the space to goal on the run from distance and
settle the boys down. Playing in the forward right pocket the ball had avoided Hamish for much of the game as he
played for the team and dragged his opponent wide to create space. Finally he was rewarded for his efforts with a
remarkable goal from a tight angle, before Aiden and Gunner rounded off proceedings with a goal each. Despite the
layoff the boys showed that on a dry track they can burn their opponents off with an attractive, hard running game.
Goals: Justin Edwards 4, Nicholas Milroy 4, Michael Gunn 3, Matthew Rashleigh 1, Aidan Russell 1, Hamish Shaw 1,
Anthony Woodward 1.
