ST. JOHN’S AND AREA
St. John’s and Area
Being the most easterly point in North America has its advantages.
For starters, we have our very own time zone. In Canada, the sun rises first on
Newfoundland and Labrador.
We’re the closest province to Europe, which means St. John’s harbour is a
safe haven for transatlantic travellers and a bustling commercial port. We’re
the youngest – and coolest – province in Canada, home to the oldest street
in North America, and we’ve been welcoming adventurers from all corners of
the world for over 500 years. A city rich in culture, we honour tradition while
embracing eclectic sophistication.
When in St. John’s, you hear your fair share of tall tales and yarns, and that’s
not all. As you walk through the winding alleyways of our vibrant downtown,
you’ll encounter fashionistas, chefs, musicians, and more, all elements of a
colourful tapestry of experiences unfolding before your eyes.
Thirsting for adventure? It’s easily quenched by skirting the dramatic coastline
on foot, or enjoying a day on a boat on the bay having close encounters with
humpback whales, puffins, or icebergs (and maybe all three!).
Beautiful vistas, unique culinary pleasures, and unique architecture are just tiny
slices of an urban experience that will feel like no other. But it’s the colourful
characters who are most memorable, in a place where strangers quickly
become friends, and the local vernacular has you smiling and scratching your
head all at once. Performances abound: sing along. Toe tapping is welcome.
Colourful experiences. Colourful characters. Colourful encounters. Make your
destination St. John’s—you’ll be glad you did.

In August 1610, Bristol merchant
John Guy arrived at Cupers Cove
(now Cupids) in Conception Bay,
Newfoundland with a small group
of colonists. By 1613, the colonists
had built at least sixteen structures,
including a fort, a sawmill, gristmill,
and a brew house. Every summer,
archeologists working the dig site
at Cupids Cove Plantation reveal
more and more about the lives
of these colonists - Canada’s first
English settlers. Come and see
what they’ve found today. This site
is operated by The Baccalieu Trail
Heritage Corporation.
The Cupids Legacy Centre is a
museum, archives, gallery and
programming facility offering
interactive cultural and heritage
experiences. Our story begins in
1610, with the arrival of Canada’s
first English settlers (see the
neighbouring Cupids Cove
Plantation, the actual colony
site, now an archaeological dig).
Museum exhibits reveal the settlers’
challenges and accomplishments
and how their descendants helped
create our distinctive Newfoundland
culture. The Centre also features an
archaeology lab, a rooftop faerie
