Machine Starting Tips
There are a number of things that have to be in place
for the machine to start. These are safety related
checks which ensure that the operator is in the correct position and in full control of the machine once
the mower is running.
C
A
4. Operator should be in full control of the vehicle
(C).
D
1. Fuel shut-off valve (A) must be open.
B
2. Park Brake (B) locked.
3. Control levers in neutral position.
5. PTO (D) off.
6. If the engine is cold, engage the choke for the
first few seconds of running.
Note: Avoid low idle when possible. Whenever
machine is moving the engine should be at high idle.
7. Run engine half throttle 2-3 minutes for warmup. Avoid unnecessary idling.
8. Park brake (B) must be disengaged before moving handles or the machine will stall.
9. When parking machine, always park on a level
surface and make a habit out of activating the park
brake before stepping of the operator platform.
Note: Keep engine at mid to high idle when turning
engine off to avoid the possibility of backfire.

Introduction - Controls
Standing on the operator platform facing the front of
the machine the right control drives the right wheel
and the left drives control the left wheel. So, if you
want to make a left turn, you want the right hand
wheel to drive faster than the left (i.e. right control
lever pushed ahead of left).
Note: Keep your stance wide on the platform for
better balance and ease using the controls.

• Never operate with the PTO shield, or other
guards, not securely in place. Be sure all
interlocks are attached, adjusted properly, and
functioning properly.
• Slow down and use extra care on hillsides. Be
sure to travel in the recommended direction
on hillsides. For this machine, drive across
hillsides, not up and down. Turf conditions
can affect the machine’s stability. Use
caution while operating near drop-offs. (See
recommendations for hillside mowing in

Operating Tips – Safe Operation
on Slopes
Operate machine with extreme caution on hills,
slopes, and rough terrain to avoid losing traction and
minimize rollover risk. Mowing sites should be carefully surveyed to assure slopes are safe for machine
operation. Consider moisture and turf conditions.
Wet slopes present significantly higher risk even
though they may have been mowed successfully
before. Look for dips and holes along the slope that
could change the angle of vehicle operation.
Determining Safe Slope Angles:
1. Lay straight piece of sturdy lumber 4 ft (1.2 m)
long on slope.
2. Measure slope angle with angle indicator or
protractor level.
3. Repeat procedure at several points on same
slope.
• Never mow or operate machine on slope angles
greater than 25°.
• Exceeding the maximum recommended slope
angle of 25° increases the risk of rollover accidents that can result in serious injury or death.
Machine Optimization
Document
• Always consider potential turf conditions and
slope angles when determining the risk of lossof-control and tip-over accidents.
• On slope angles of 15° or less the risk of rollover
is low, but as the slope angle increases to the
John Deere recommended maximum of 25° the
risk increases to a moderate level.
When Operating on Slope
• Carefully review all cautions included in
machine Operators Manual.
• Always wear seat belt when operating
machine, regardless of slope condition.
• Make sure that tires are properly inflated.
Too low or too high tire pressure will cause
the tires to lose traction.
• Whenever possible, mow up and down the
slope rather than across it.
• Use lower speeds when mowing and
operating on slopes.
• Use caution when making turns or changing
directions on slopes.
• Decrease speed as the slope angle increases.
• Do not mow near drop-offs, ditches,
embankments, or bodies of water. Machine
could suddenly roll over if wheel goes over
edge or edge caves in. Leave a safe margin
between the machine and any hazard.
• Avoid areas where turf is wet or loose.
• Leave rotary decks lowered on slopes to
maximize stability. Never lift rotary decks on
steep slopes. Raising rotary decks on a slope
can cause the machine to become unstable.
• Use caution when operating machine on
wet or loose turf. Tires may lose traction. If
it begins to rain, discontinue operation on
slope.

Consequences of Improper Setup and/or Operation
Symptoms
Tire sidewalls bubbled or failed
Poor cut quality
Turf scuffing
Steering
Engine will not start or stalls intermittently while mowing
Loss of traction while mowing or
traveling across slope
Deck leaves uneven and/or
uncut grass
Tracking complaint and/or loss of
drive in forward/reverse
Possible Causes
□□ Tires run at too low pressure
□□ Blades are dull
□□ Engine speed not set to wide open throttle when mowing
(3650 +/- @ 100 rpm no load)
□□ HOC set too low for turf height and conditions; not following “1/3” rule:
No more than one-third of the grass blade should be cut off at one time.
This allows more efficient mulching and will promote the continued good
health of the grass. If the desired cut height can’t be achieved by cutting off
one-third, or there is clumping of the clippings, it may be required to cut
higher; wait a day, then lower the mower and make a second pass
□□ Mow speed too fast for turf conditions and amount of grass being removed
□□ Mow speed too fast in turns or on slopes; tires skidding or slipping
□□ Machine steers to the left or right while the steering levers are full forward
□□ Steering levers are not even when in the neutral position
□□ Fuel filter plugged. May visually look clean, but can still be partially plugged.
□□ Mowing speed too high – Operator may be bounced off of platform
intermittently while mowing shutting the engine and/or the deck OFF.
□□ Tires not inflated to correct pressure
□□ Ground/mow speed too fast for turf conditions
□□ Slope angle too steep for turf conditions
□□ Factory does not recommend foam filling tires for side hill traction
and overall ride
□□ Blades are dull
□□ HOC set too low for turf height and conditions
□□ Mow speed too fast for turf conditions
□□ Stepped or uneven cut from deck not being level, spindle pocket bent
from impacts, or mower blades bent.
□□ Worn or loose linkages
□□ Plugged hydraulic filter restricting flow to charge pump
