Siwanoy Country Club
Siwanoy Country Club Written by BRUNO Siwanoy Country Club in Eastchester/Bronxville N.Y is steeped with history, it hosted the first ever PGA Championship in 1916, which was won by James Barnes.Walter Hagen and Gene Sarazen were regulars here in their hey day, and Siwanoy was the site of Harry Vardon and Ted Ray's return to America in 1920. After Francis Ouimet triumphed over the two englishmen at the 1913 U.S Open at The Country Club in Brookline, the english duo did not return to the states until 1 / 14 Siwanoy Country Club Written by BRUNO 1920, where they embarked on a lengthy escapade (many months) playing exhibition matches . . . Siwanoy was their first stop, and they defeated all challengers at this Donald Ross gem. The course itself is a 1901 Donald Ross design, and tests your game throughout. At only 6,500 yards from the tips, it makes up for its lack of length in its design variety and character. 2 / 14 Siwanoy Country Club Written by BRUNO The routing brings you back up the hill to the clubhouse at the turn, and finishes along the entry road on the other side of the clubhouse. There is no particular shot shape that is favored here, work your shots in the direction Mr.Ross dictates, or find yourself in the lush rough that will challenge even the strongest of players. This task is magnified by the fact that many of Siwanoy's greens are elevated. I was feelin it on the range on this particular day, the dispersion pattern with my driver wasn't more then a yard or two . . . so internally I was thinking this could be a good day (performance wise). 3 / 14 Siwanoy Country Club Written by BRUNO The course starts off with a short par 4, that flows downhill off the tee, your approach is to an elevated and very undulating green well protected by a cavernous front bunker. The view from behind the 1st green Number 2 is a fantastic golf hole, this par 4 moves left to right and will leave 4 / 14 Siwanoy Country Club Written by BRUNO you with a side hill lie to another uphill putting surface.I'm already in love with the place at this point. The 4th & 5th holes are back to back par 5's, the 4th is a classic right to left dogleg and the 5th is a rollercoaster (downhill tee shot/uphill approach) that is visually exciting. (photo below) par 5 - 520 yard fifth 5 / 14 Siwanoy Country Club Written by BRUNO The 6th hole is classic Ross. My playing partner Steve Cunnion, made an "all world" par save from the front bunker. Par 3 sixth at Siwanoy 6 / 14 Siwanoy Country Club Written by BRUNO Par 4 - Eighth at Siwanoy The 8th is one of my favorite short par 4's, an uphill tee shot that finds the fairway 7 / 14 Siwanoy Country Club Written by BRUNO will leave a downhill approach to a well guarded putting surface. The 9th plays straight up the hill, so much so, that the only visible target is the flagstick itself (located right in line with the chimney). uphill approach at the Ninth 8 / 14 Siwanoy Country Club Written by BRUNO At the turn, I was really admiring the Ross design, and getting the course history throughout the round from my host Mike Mulhearn ("Spike"), really gave me an appreciation for the origins of this beautiful place. par 4 - tenth 9 / 14 Siwanoy Country Club Written by BRUNO The holes on the inward nine did not disappoint, especially the closing holes 15 thru 18.Fifteen is the toughest on the property, 458 yd par 4 that played into a crosswind . . . it was driver/4 iron on this day, a tough par indeed. The 16th is a relatively short par 4, but the drive requires accuracy with tall fescue left and a creek down the right. The drive that finds position "A" will leave a wedge approach to another well guarded elevated green. The 17th runs parallel to the previous, but sits higher on the property and plays a little longer, this was perhaps my favorite view at Siwanoy. The long wispy fescue and rock formation that bisected the two holes just made these 10 / 14 Siwanoy Country Club Written by BRUNO two holes something special. The 17th at Siwanoy The home hole is a great finishing par 5, that moves left to right off the tee. Ignorance was bliss here, as Spike pointed me to a target from the tee box, and I nailed it . . . after gettin to the ball, I realized the fairway was about 11 / 14 Siwanoy Country Club Written by BRUNO 12 yards wide where my ball sat in the short grass.Another green hit, and another missed birdie putt, on a day where fourteen greens were hit in regulation, 71 didn't seem just (but I wasn't complaining). par 5 eighteenth 12 / 14 Siwanoy Country Club Written by BRUNO After finishing a swift 3 hour round with playing partner Steve Cunnion and (Tour Guide) Spike, we spent some social time outside on the porch just outside the grill room, just soaking it all in. Siwnanoy as a golf club is as timeless as any I've experienced, what more could you want, a vintage 1901 Ross design, great membership and a helpful staff. Thanks to Mike Mulhearn for a great day, and cheers to Grant Turner and his amazing staff for allowing us to experience the beauty and charm of Siwanoy CC. 13 / 14 Siwanoy Country Club Written by BRUNO 14 / 14
