Bad Gögging –
a 2000-year-old spa resort on the banks of the Danube
As long as 2000 years ago, Bad Gögging was the site of one of the largest Roman public baths north of the Alps.
Even then, sulphur springs were well known to be highly therapeutic in the treatment of joints. And even after
Roman times the tradition of spa and baths in Bad Gögging never completely disappeared. It is documented
that Bavarian Duke Ludwig ‘the Rich’ profited greatly from his visits to the spa in 1470. In 1919 the towns
people of Gögging were officially awarded the title ‘Bad’.
Today, the pleasant spa and holiday resort in Lower Bavaria is popular for those who want to experience typical
Bavarian traditions and savour the culinary delicacies of the region and at the same time enjoy the beauties of
nature. Set in the ‘Hallertau’, famous for hop-growing and at the edge of the Altmühltal Nature Park, Bad Gögging is able to offer a wide variety of sport and leisure activities as well as relaxation and recreation.
Organized excursions on bike or on foot as well as numerous evening events, concerts, colourful festivals and
celebrations provide for conviviality and entertainment. And you will be able to enjoy Bavaria’s warm and
friendly hospitality in the many restaurants, inns and traditional and rustic beer-gardens.

Bad Gögging – we have everything you need for your well-being
Of course a great deal has changed in Bad Gögging since the ancient Romans were here:
Bad Gögging is the only spa resort in Bavaria boasting three efficient natural therapeutic remedies – highly
concentrated sulphur springs, precious thermal mud and rich mineral thermal springs. The focal point of Bad
Gögging is the Limes-Therme, with its recreational pool, Roman-styled sauna, health centre, beauty oasis and
comprehensive wellness programme. For many years, visitors have benefited from its combination of both the
traditional and the modern in the areas of skin and body care and the culture of spa bathing.
But the Limes-Therme is not the only place where everything revolves around your well-being. The PASSAUER
WOLF Reha-Centre Bad Gögging, specializing in neurology, orthopaedics, geriatrics and ENT-phoniatrics has
a reputation for approved medical rehabilitation, excellent professional competence and friendly personal care.
Here medical excellence runs hand in hand with an inviting atmosphere of wellness.
The family-owned Römerbad Clinics (special clinics for orthopaedics, physical and rehabilitative medicine) and
the clinic and health resort ‘Kaiser Trajan’ (special clinic for orthopaedics and metabolic disorders) with their
up-to-date holistic concepts, comprehensive spectrum of medical and therapeutic services and highly qualified
staff are able to meet all special requirements.
In addition there are numerous facilities and therapeutic programmes available offering a wealth of opportunities to meet your desire for relaxation and regeneration.

Three ways to better health: Medicinal cures and benefits
Bad Gögging is the only spa resort in Bavaria to have
three recognized local therapeutic natural remedies:
The sulphur springs with their high sulphur content have been providing relief for ailments of the joints and spine in particular for 2000 years.
And with such great success that the Roman occupying forces at the Limes
built here their largest thermal baths north of the Alps. To heal their aching limbs and of course to luxuriate in the Roman high culture of bathing.
Today, a state-of-the-art motion laboratory is in operation, which can detect
potential damage depicting it two-dimensionally by computer.
The natural thermal mud with its high capacity of heat storage is the
second natural remedy which has enhanced the good reputation of spa treatments in Bad Gögging. It stimulates the blood circulation and improves the
body’s heat regulation system. The greatest benefit is achieved when the mud
is freshly gathered and mixed to a soft paste with sulphur or thermal water
and allowed to unfold its full potential in a bathtub or as a wrap.
The mineral thermal water is the third and the newest natural
remedy of the spa resort. It is pumped from a depth of 600 metres and
can then develop its beneficial effects in the 15 different warm baths in
the Limes-Therme. It completes the spectrum of the natural ‘fountain of
health’ and makes Bad Gögging a spa resort with a very wide therapeutic
basis. Wherever your aches and pains – a spa treatment in Bad Gögging will
soothe and is a great boost to your health.

Our springs – from the depths of Bavaria
The Andreas and Sebastiani springs in Bad Gögging were opened up in 1976 through borehole drilling in the
border regions between the South Frankenalb and the Bavarian Molasse basin. To this day these officially accredited mineral springs form the basis of our modern health spa and medicinal cures.
The thermal springs ‘Sebastiani Spring’
and ‘Laurentius Spring’ (650 m)
The Andreas Spring sulphur well (120 m)
Since the boreholes were drilled, thermal mineral water has been extracted from the sandstone keuper through
two 650 m deep wells. The water is screened through stainless steel pipes and sealed off from the higher strata
by means of well-construction technological measures. The water emerges from the spring at a temperature of
21° C or 26° C. For the recreational and therapeutic pools, the water is extracted at an average of 3.5 l/s and it is
then heated to the required temperature for the baths.
(fluoride and sulphur-rich spring)
Water containing hydrogen sulphide was tapped at a depth of 120 m out of the Malm. The extraction temperature from this sulphur spring is ca. 14° C. The mineral quantities extracted from the spring for the sulphur baths
and for the drinking well amount to an average of 0.7 l/s.

The Limes-Therme – a world of wellness
The Limes-Therme
Long ago the
ancient Romans took great pleasure in bathing
here in the various warm baths. Partly for health
reasons, but really the main focus was on social
life and entertainment. With its state-of-the-art
facilities the Limes-Therme is able to carry on
this ancient bathing tradition and boasts
15 pools with Jacuzzi, water flumes, steam
sauna, relaxation rooms and lots of other enticing opportunities. A healthy and relaxing water
experience.
Training in TerraVitalis
There are two unique
training methods available in TerraVitalis in the LimesTherme. With the help of modern technology, Alpine
Altitude Training creates conditions similar to those at an
altitude of 2500 metres where physical exertion goes hand
in hand with reduced oxygen intake. This ideal training for
mountaineers and competitive athletes is beneficial to others
too by improving condition and strengthening the body’s
own immune system. And Aqua Cycling too, soon brings
a marked improvement in condition. The buoyancy of the
water reduces the weight load and makes for a low-impact training which boosts endurance, strength and mobility. An increased lipometabolism can have a positive effect on body weight.
The Römer-Sauna
A sauna world with all that we expect
today from a health-giving and regenerating sauna but with a truly
Roman ambience, housed in a reconstruction of a Roman watchtower
and with a Mediterranean garden for relaxation. You will be amazed
to discover just how much sophisticated luxury the Romans allowed
themselves.
16
17
TerraVitalis in the Limes-Therme
The Salt Grotto
Bizarre salt formations on the walls and the
ceilings, ankle deep salt on the ground, magical lighting and comfortable sun loungers to relax and breathe in the air. That is the Dead Sea
salt grotto in the Limes-Therme where the salty air clears the airways.
It can also help by many skin diseases such as neurodermitis or psoriasis. In the saline mist room too, natural Himalayan salt is nebulized
allowing the saturated air to purify the respiratory tracts and the skin.
Deep heat
For those who find the classical Römer-Sauna too hot,
we recommend infra-red deep-heat. The body almost completely absorbs the heat, stimulating the circulation and so giving it important
health-giving and beneficial properties. For example it can relieve pain
in the muscles and joints and help with inflammation in the areas of
the ear, nose and throat. And of course it can ward off cumbersome
symptoms of colds and influenza. In the colour sanarium the temperatures are mild, making for healthy perspiration while the four-coloured
light therapy has a positive effect on the mental well-being.
Beauty and Relaxationg
The oriental rasul bath is purely for
the purpose of beauty. Mineral muds and healing earths are applied to
the skin and are allowed to soak deep into the skin in the warm damp
atmosphere and then gently washed away. The ‘Bavarian’ hop-aromatherapy bath is a reliable relief for nervous and stress symptoms and
also the Dead Sea aromatherapy salt bath, scented with orange oil is
good for relaxation. The sulphur bath is effective on the skin. Mud
baths provide intensive warmth and are mainly used in physiotherapy.
Mud and chalk peelings are beneficially beautifying for the skin.
Perfectly relaxed after these treatments, you can abandon yourself to one of the comprehensive spectrum of
massages on offer in TerraVitalis in the Limes-Therme. You have the choice, either wellness orientated or rather
more sportive.

Entertainment, enjoyment and relaxation in the Kurhaus
The Kurhaus, built in Roman style and with the large public square is a
genuine work of art. In the colonnade, busts of many famous Roman figures
across four centuries can be admired.
Health and fitness facilities and a gymnastics room are all here, as well as a
well-stocked library with books, magazines and newspapers and a comfortable reading corner where you can browse to your heart’s content.
In the ‘Café im Kurhaus’ you can meet friends for a chat over coffee with
delicious coffee specialities and a large selection of pastries.
Focal point in the Kurhaus is the concert hall with a view over the rose
garden, and where numerous events take place, such as concerts, theatre,
cabaret and lectures. The Kurhaus is also popular for conferences, seminars,
small exhibitions and fairs. A few smaller rooms are also available.
Adjoining you will find the idyllic parks where a variety of exhibits from a
wide range of artists will certainly make you want to set off on a discovery
tour. (KunstparKur Bad Gögging)

Bad Gögging –
for the adventurous
Your discovery tour starts right on the doorstep. Some
will want to test their skill at AdventureMiniGolf while
the professionals will be improving their handicap on the
9-hole-golf course with its driving range, chipping, pitching and putting greens.
For walkers and ramblers the magnificent landscape has
a wide variety of trails to offer. The Bad Gögging walking
map alone describes 14 routes with approximately 90 km.
Cycling in and around Bad Gögging makes it possible to
combine the pleasures of both the countryside and culture. On the Via Danubia, cyclists travel directly into
the centre of Roman history. A display of baroque splendour is awaiting up-river along the Danube cycle path at
Kloster Weltenburg.
Bad Gögging’s gastronomy is richly varied and draws
from the wide range of agricultural products in the area.
In spring, all around Bad Gögging the renowned Abensberg asparagus is harvested. And the hop poles of the famous Hallertau reach to the skies right at the edge of the
town. Many local breweries brew ‘hoppy’ beers which go
down very well as an accompaniment to the many specialities of Lower Bavaria being served in inns, restaurants
and beer gardens. Even the most demanding palate cannot
fail to be contented here.
Numerous events to suit every taste take place in and
around Bad Gögging over the whole year.

in the historic church of St. Andreas

Emperor Trajan (98 – 119 AD) built probably the largest public baths north of the Alps here in Bad Gögging.
Archaeological excavations have revealed that this complex measured approx. 60 x 30 m. and was equipped
with all the refinements of Roman bathing culture. At
this time there was already a caldarium (hot room), a
sudatorium (sweating room) and a frigidarium (cold
room). The Romanic Church of St. Andreas war erected
over the site of one of the Roman bathing pools and now houses the ‘Roman
Museum of Spas and Bathing Rituals’. The excavated remains and finds
from the Roman sulphur medical baths are on display here. A guided tour
will give you interesting information about the bathing facilities, Roman
bathing rituals and also information about the Church of St. Andreas from
the 12th century.

A window into the Roman past at the Limes
Originally the Kastell Abusina in Eining was built to
guard the Roman border along the Danube. The wall
of the Rhaetian Limes (a World Heritage Site) met
the Danube in neighbouring Hienheim and so later
the soldiers were to monitor the junction between
the river and the dry Limes. The excavations of the
cohort castle are catalogued according to so-called
‘time-frames’ offering information in two languages
and drawing your attention to the significant parts of
the castle. A Roman festival is to take place in August
under the motto ‘Salve Abusina’, where the Roman
times will be re-awakened. Roman legionnaires and artisans will populate the
former military camp and provide visitors with an insight into everyday and
military life as it was 2000 years ago. In addition to various performances in
the show arenas, visitors will be able to gain a realistic close-up experience in
the camps of the cohorts and artisans.
