Lifeline
to women who experienced
unplanned pregnancies.
When a feasibility study
showed the need for such a
ministry in the northern
Dauphin/western
Schuylkill/southern
Northumberland
county
area, they began seeing
clients at David’s Church in
1990.
After two moves, in 2002,
the ministry settled at its
current location, 403 Union
Street, Millersburg.
Tammy Briggs, who volunteers at Lifeline, called
the ministry the town’s bestkept secret. She said the
organization equips families
to be better parents and also
gives them resources to care
for their babies.
“You don’t have to lose
hope,” she said. “You don’t
have to feel you can’t care
for your baby. You have
someone to come alongside.”
And the community has
come alongside the organization after an employee
misappropriated funds in
2014.
With the exception of one
person, Lifeline has new
employees and a new eightmember board of directors.
The individual who mishandled funds resigned and is
repaying the ministry. So
far $10,000 of the $29,000
theft has been repaid.
According to Snyder, safeguards to prevent what
happened are now followed.
“I’ve been working real
hard to try and establish
trust,” Snyder said. “There’s
a lot of generosity. I’m
always blessed and touched
by the giving.”
While the ministry lost
contributors through the
incident,
others
have
stepped up to the plate.
“The giving is really up,”
Snyder said, referencing
the recent campaign.
Clients offered parenting
classes. Lifeline receives no
government funding.
Lifeline’s annual budget
is $93,805. Supporters –
individuals, groups, churches – are invited to “sponsor
a day” of operation at $257.
Most clients – men,
women and couples – participate in an “Earn-WhileYou-Learn” program. For
attending classes on childrearing and parenting, they
receive “baby bucks” to purchase anything from diapers to strollers.
Classes are taught by
trained volunteers who
work with parents one-onone. They cover a wide
range of topics of interest to
parents such as prenatal
care, understanding your
baby’s cry, infant temperament, bonding, potty training and caring for them-

selves as parents, to mention just a few.

alongside teachers.
“Baby bucks” are spent in
rooms full of “merchandise.”
A boutique offers brand new
children’s clothes and diapers for a couple “baby
bucks,” while new car seats,
pack-and-plays and other
larger items may require
nine or 10.
Other rooms at the center
offer gently-used clothes,
new cribs, baby food, formula, wipes, etc.
‘‘We help them choose
life.’’ Lifeline averages
meeting with 35 to 40
clients per month. Some
visit simply for pregnancy
tests. More than 3,900 people in the region have taken
advantage of the center’s
services, which are free.
First-time visitors to the
center are invited to choose
an adult book, and children
who accompany them may
choose a children’s book and
a toy.
“We help them choose
life,” Snyder said of clients,
“and we help them with
everything they need in
order to choose life.”
Beginning Wednesday,
April 6 at 7 p.m., Lifeline
will offer “Surrendering the
Secret,” an eight-week
Bible study series on healing from the trauma of
experiencing an abortion.
To register for the class,
contact Rachel Shetterly at
717-952-0201 or e-mail

“(We are) a group of people who love Jesus and love
others and just want to be
his hands and feet,” Snyder
said. “Passionately pro-life,
but passionately pro-mom,
pro-dad, pro-family.”
Lifeline employs only
Snyder “full time” for 32
hours weekly; three others
work part time from four to
16 hours weekly. Fifteen
volunteers, who sign confi-

dentiality agreements, support the ministry.
But more are needed so
that the center can offer
longer hours.
According to Snyder, volunteers offer their expertise
through “time, talent and
treasure.”
“Tammy (Briggs) is an
example of someone volunteering with talent – her
connection with the media,”
Snyder said. “When people
just step forward with what
they have to offer (it helps
the ministry).”
Briggs works as communications director at Camp
Hebron, Halifax.
Of course an increase in
clientele would mean an
increase in demand for
finances.
And Snyder has her own
dreams.
“Personally, I would like
to see us offer ultrasound at
some point in the future,”
she said.
‘‘Coming alongside’’ those
who are in need. Snyder
said Lifeline offers hope
and strength to the people
of the area because they
find someone to come alongside of them.
“I was only 14 when I got
pregnant with my son,” she
said, “so I know what it
feels like to be scared and
not know how to take care
of a baby.”
Lifeline also offers a sexual integrity program.
“We are seeing some
interest from an afterschool group that we may
go into next year,” Snyder
said. “We would like to do
the program in church
youth groups and public
schools.”
Male mentors are available to come alongside male
clients, and a pastor is
available for pastoral counseling.
With cozy meeting rooms,
private offices and a spacious third-floor conference
room with private entrance
to assure confidentiality,
Lifeline stands alongside
clients as a Christian ministry to meet physical,
social and spiritual needs.
The ministry invites and
depends on the community
to continue to stand alongside it to fulfill its mission
of defending life.
