VHS Homecoming Candidates Elected
Allison Bean

Andrea Stepter
Allison Carole Bean was
nominated as one of this year’s
queen candidates.
Throughout her years at VHS,
Allison has participated in YFC,
pep club, Beta club, student council,
HOSA, Spanish club, Globetrotters,
golf, and basketball.
In Allison’s spare time, she
enjoys reading, shopping, spending
time with friends and family, church
activities and running.
After high school, Allison
plans to attend SIUE and get
her bachelor’s degree in nursing
Cara Lynn Otte was chosen as a
queen candidate for this year.
Cara has participated in band,
dance, Beta club, track, scholar
bowl, and choir.
In her spare time, Cara enjoys
reading, chatting on msn, dancing,
listening to music, shopping,
hanging out with friends, playing
guitar hero, and playing her flute.
After she graduates from high
school, Cara plans on attending
college, but she is unsure which
one she will attend.
Reagan Ross Summers was
nominated as one of this years
queen candidates.
Throughout her years at
VHS, Reagan has participated in
basketball, softball, YFC, Spanish
club, pep club, Beta club, and
HOSA.
In Reagan’s spare time, she
enjoys reading, shopping, church,
and hanging out with friends and
family.
After high school, Reagan plans
on going to college to become an
RN. After that, she may go to a

In her spare time, Andrea enjoys
hanging out with all her friends,
going out and doing crazy things
she has never done before, and

After she graduates from high
school, Andrea plans on going to
college, getting a good job, starting
a family, then going sky diving!

Austin Tal Adams has been
chosen as a king candidate for this
year.
While at VHS, Austin has
participated in pep club, Beta club,
and YFC.
In his spare time he enjoys
playing the drums.
After Austin graduates from
high school, he plans on attending
John A. Logan and studying
engineering.
When elected as a candidate,
Austin stated, “It feels great to have
the opportunity to represent Vienna
High School.”
Austin’s most memorable
moment at VHS was winning the
lip syncs last year.
Robert Lee Hoffmann III was
king candidates.
Throughout his years at VHS,
Bobby has participated in baseball,
golf, Spanish club, FFA, art,
Globetrotters, student council, Beta
club, junior leadership team, YFC,
prom committee, pep club, and
FCA.
In Bobby’s spare time, he
enjoys hunting, fishing, playing
baseball with his dad, and playing
his piano.
After he graduates from high
school Bobby plans on attending
college and staying around here
with a job.
Bobby’s first thought about
being elected as a homecoming
Daniel Kerley has been chosen
as a king candidate for this year.
While at VHS, Daniel has
participated in golf, band, choir,
cross country, track, and Beta club.
In his spare time, Daniel enjoys
running, playing frisbee, and
writing love sonnets.
After Daniel graduates from
high school he plans on going to
a university and studying clinical
psychology.
When elected as a candidate
Daniel stated, “I am surprised that
people like me that much. I’m
honored and glad that people think
that highly of me.”
Daniel’s favorite part of
homecoming week is acting silly in
front of the student body during
Clayton Tanner Stevens was
king candidates.
Throughout his years at VHS,
Clayton has participated in Spanish
club, Beta club, pep club and
basketball.
In Clayton’s spare time, he
enjoys lifting weights, playing
basketball, and riding fourwheelers.
His most memorable moment
at VHS is when Zach fell down
over and over during the dizzy bat
game.
After he graduates from high
school, Clayton plans on attending
Shawnee Community College for
two years and then attend a four
year university.

Junior class in the 2008
homecoming ceremony.
Colten participates in pep
club, football, and baseball.
In his spare time, Colten

hanging out with his buds.

Colten is the son of Trina

brother Austin, 11.
Laeytn Field
Laeytn Ray Field has been
chosen as a 2008 junior
homecoming attendant.
Laeytn participates in
basketball, dance, pep club,
Spanish club and HOSA.
In her spare time, Laeytn
enjoys spending time with
family and friends, and just
having fun!
Her favorite part of
homecoming week is the lip
syncs, but she enjoys all of
it.
Laeytn is excited about

stated, “I am very honored
to represent my class.”
Laeytn is the daughter of
Danny and Sherry Field, and
has one older brother Kelin,

In her spare time, Cassie

Sammi Morrisette and Jenna
Malone.

a member of the football
team, track team, and tennis
team.

Bryan Charles West is
one of this year’s freshman
homecoming atendants elected
by his class.
Bryan is a member of the
baseball team and basketball
team. He is also in pep club and
plans on joining the football
team next year.
In Bryan’s spare ime, he likes
to hunt, go ishing, and play XBox.
Bryan really appreciates
being an atendant this year.
He commented, “I’m honored
to represent my freshman class
and want to thank everyone for
voing for me.”
Bryan is looking forward
to having fun and supporing
his school and class during
homecoming week.
Bryan is the son of Roy and
Chrisie West of Cypress. He has
three brothers, Josh, who is 25,
Bruce, who is 18, and Bradley,
who is 9.
Kasyn Deshay Moore was
chosen to be a freshman
atendant for homecoming
2008.
Kasyn is a member of the
basketball team, student council,
and pep club.
In her spare ime, Kasyn
enjoys singing, dancing, ishing,
hanging out with friends, fourwheeler riding, and huning with
her dad.
Kasyn is very happy that
she was chosen to represent
her class. She said, “I was really
surprised that I was chosen. I am
honored, though, to represent
my class, and super excited!”
Kasyn is looking forward to
dressing up for the homecoming
ceremony and the dance. She is
also excited to see the skits and
lip syncs.
Kasyn is the daughter of
Rodney Moore and Sheila Lance.
She has a younger brother, Zach,
who is 10, and two younger
sisters, Jalyn, who is 6, and
Havyn, who is 2.
Kyle Andrew Loyd has been
chosen by his class to be one
of the freshman homecoming
atendants for 2008.
Kyle is a member of the
baseball team.
In his spare ime, Kyle enjoys
ishing, huning, camping or just
anything in the outdoors and
with his friends.
Kyle is happy he was elected
by his fellow classmates to be
an atendant. He commented, “I
am honored that my classmates
voted me in. Thanks guys!”
When asked what he
looks forward to most about
homecoming week, Kyle said,
“Well, as a freshman, I don’t
really know what to expect, but
it seems like it’s going to be a
blast!”
Kyle is the son of Travis and
Jerri Loyd. He has an older sister,
Kayla, who is 17.
Heather Paige Nance was
elected by her class to be a
freshman atendant.
Heather paricipates in
chorus and is a member of the
volleyball team.
In her spare ime, Heather
likes to draw, sing, paintball,
horse-back ride, read, listen to
music and play Halo 1, 2, and
3, and Gears of War with her
brother Kaleb. She also likes to
go mudding.
Heather is very excited to be
chosen to represent her class.
She commented, “I am very
proud and happy!”

Homecoming Master and Mistress of Ceremonies chosen

Mr. Kelin Field and Miss
Caroline Bremer were selected to
serve as the 2008-2009 Master and
Mistress of Ceremonies for the
homecoming coronation to be held
on December 12.
Kelin Field, Master of
ceremonies and a senior at Vienna
High School, said, “I’m looking
forward to representing our school
this year, and I am very excited
about finally getting to wear my
PINK dress to coronation.”
The Master and Mistress of
Ceremonies have the responsibility

of announcing all homecoming
attendants and candidates during
the coronation ceremony. They will
also highlight the extracurricular
activities, organizations, and
future plans of the king and queen
candidates.
Caroline Bremer, Mistress of
Ceremonies, said, “The opportunity
to take part in the homecoming
coronation is really exciting. And
to my fellow Viennians, I am so
honored to be co-announcing with
the maverick, Kelin Field.”

VHS
hosts the Vienna Classic basketball tournament

Vienna High School
hosted the Vienna Classic
Thanksgiving
basketball
tournament on November
24-29. On the opening
night of the tournament,
Vienna suffered a loss to
Carrier Mills High School,
with the final score totalling
56-47. On Wednesday, the
Eagles beat Caruthersville
High School with the score
of 74-66.
On Friday night, game
play continued, and Vienna
played against Hardin
County
High
School.
Unfortunately, the Eagles
lost by five points, with a
final score of 59-54.
Closing
out
the
tournament on Saturday,
VHS put up a good fight
to Meridian, but we did not
end up on the high side, as
Meridian won, 72-60.
As the team taking
home the first place trophy
was soon to be announced,
everyone was anticipating
the results. After all the
points were calculated,
Meridian High School was
the winner of the first place
trophy.
Following the first place
trophy’s presentation, the
All-Tournament Team was
announced. Players named
to the team were Cory
Belsher of VHS, Travis
Cowsert of Hardin County,
Isiah Jones and Randle Hite
of Meridian, and Wyatt
Kirkland and Ryan Nichols
of Carrier Mills.
Cory Belsher is a senior
and plays forward for the
Eagles. He stated, “I could
not have done this (being
on the All-Tourney Team)
without my teammates,
Coach Hill, and God. God
bless everyone!”
The Eagles Cheerleaders
placed second in the game
competition. The first place
winner was Carrier Mills,
who took it home proudly.
Paige Langston, a
sophomore
cheerleader,
was sad that the team did
not reach the first place
victory. She said, “It was
disappointing to only win
second, but it let the squad
know what we need to work
on to be a better team. We
need more pep to our steps!”
stated Paige.
This is the 10th year
that VHS has held this
tournament.
The Eagles
have won first place four of
the ten years, although they
were unsuccessful this year
in reaching that goal.
The
cheerleading
competition has also been
held every year to coordinate
with the tournament, and the
Eagles cheerleaders have
snagged first place four
times, as well as getting
second place for four years.

a much needed recycling
program that focuses on

start a recycling program,
benefiting both the school

The recycling program
will first focus on recycling
plastic bottles that are found
in our school’s vending
machines, in addition to
newspapers and used copy
paper. Plastic bins will be
purchased for the commons
area, administrative offices,
and classrooms.

Lady Eagles gear up to steal Black Diamond

Are diamonds really a girl’s
best friend? Well, our Lady Eagles
might not be too worried about the
diamonds they wear on their necks,
but the girl’s basketball team is
working extremely hard so they can
take the Black Diamond away this
year!

stay in shape for this season. Senior
Kassidy Shoemaker commented,
“Practices are hard but they get
better as you go.”

first game for the Lady Eagles.
They faced Eldorado, with a score
of 53 to 32, to easily take the win.
The Lady Eagles are hoping
to have a great impact in the

Kassidy Shoemaker added, “My
number one hope is to gradually
get better and better as the year
progresses.”

Allison Bean receives 2008 DAR Citizenship Award

Allison Bean receives the DAR Citizenship Award
Allison Bean is this year’s
recipient of the Daughters of the
American Revolution (DAR) Good
Citizen Award.
The DAR Good Citizen
Award is given to one female
high school Senior at each high
school. The Senior must portray
the characteristics of a good
citizen, including qualities such
as responsibility, leadership, and
patriotism.
The faculty of the school choose
one Senior girl from the class who
they believe has these qualities.
The student chosen competes
for scholarships by explaining in a
written essay why and how she has
shown these qualities throughout
her life, and why she deserves
further rewards, including college
scholarships.
The award recipient is also
honored at an awards ceremony,
where she is recognized along with
other winners from surrounding
schools.
“I am honored to be chosen. I
appreciate the fact that the teachers
see me as a role model for the DAR,
and I hope I can continue to be a
good role model. Thank you very
much!” Allison commented.
Prom committee starts preparations for the 2009 prom

The senior class prom committee
has began the preparations for this
year’s prom.
The group is being led by senior
class sponsors Mrs. Cochran and
Mr. Palmer. On December 4th,
the group met to discuss the theme.
Themes that were brought up were
Hollywood, Oriental, and Mardi
Gras. In the end the committee
decided to combine Oriental and
Hollywood to go with a Chinese
Theater theme.
Prom will be held at the The senior prom committee met on December 4th to discuss the theme of this year’s prom. The theme was decided to be Chinese
Carbondale Civic Center on May Theater.

Winter athletes introduced at Meet the Eagles

This year’s Meet the Eagles
took place on Nov 14th to introduce
the athletes participating in winter
sports, including boys and girls
basketball players, dancers, and
cheerleaders.
Boy’s Freshmen, Junior Varsity
and Varsity basketball teams were
introduced, followed by girls Junior
Varsity and Varsity, VHS dancers
and cheerleaders.
Pizza was served in the
commons before the event started
in honor of the athletes.
At around six o’ clock, the lights
went out as the athletes ran out
onto the floor with their respective
teams, then all of the senior athletes
ran out last.
After the introduction, the band
played the national anthem and
the cheerleaders cheered, as all the
basketball teams played scrimmage
games for the crowd.
In between games, the dancers
showed off their new routines.
Overall, Meet the Eagles was
a success. “It is a lot of work, but
it was well worth it,” says Mrs.
Palmer, coach of the girls team.
The event was coordinated by
Mrs. Palmer, Mr. Palmer, and the
pep club officers.

VHS WYSE team selected for 2008- 2009 school year
Jacob Lane, one of the new mascots,
entertained the crowd at Meet the Eagles.
The 2008-2009 WYSE team
was recently selected. WYSE stands
for World Wide Use for Science
and Engineering. It is a competition
put on by the University of Illinois
to challenge people in English,
Biology, Graphic design, computer
science, math, chemistry, and
physics.
To get chosen for the WYSE
team, you must sign up for it, be
passing your classes, have a good
discipline record, and take a try-out
test and hope you score better than
the other people trying - out.

VHS students participate in SCC’s 20th Annual Musical, “Wizard of Oz”

From November 5-8, five
Vienna High School students
participated
in
Shawnee
Community College’s 20th Annual
Fall Children’s Theatre production,
“The Wizard of Oz.” Four VHS
seniors, Brad Childress, Kelin
Field, Ashton Barger, and Caroline
Bremer, and VHS sophomore,
Kirsten Trambley, were all part of
the 90+ member cast.
Brad was cast as a member of
the Cyclone Ensemble, a Winkie,
and Zeke the farmhand on the
Gale’s family farm. Kelin was a
member of the Cyclone Ensemble, a
Winkie, and the farmhand Hickory
on the Gale’s estate. Ashton was
Tree number two in the scene where
Dorothy Gale meets the Tinman,
and additionally in the set titled
“The Dark Forest.” Caroline and
Kirsten were both members of the
Cyclone Ensemble and Citizens of
Emerald City in the Land of Oz.
“Wizard of Oz” was Brad
VHS students Brad Childress, Ashton Barger, Kelin Field, Caroline Bremer, and Kirsten Trambley were in “Wizard of Oz,” based
off of the beloved novel by L. Frank Baum.
Childress’ first SCC musical. He
said “It was fun talking like a hick
again,” referring to his role as
Yokel in our VHS play from last
spring, “The Bachelor King.”

in seven Shawnee musicals. She

On October 30, Mrs. Clayton’s
Information Processing 1 class
went to Murray State University
for the Cyber Cave, a hands-on
telecommunications
technology
program offered by the university for
high school students. The program
is run by the Telecommunications
System
Management
(TSM)
students in Murray.
The field trip to Cyber Cave
included lab activities, a lunch
provided by the Center for TSM,
a CD of pictures taken that day,
a drawing for a free t-shirt, and
another free gift for the class.
Multiple members of the class won
prizes that included a t-shirt and a
water bottle. The TSM provided a
lot of activities and prizes for the
students.
TSM students are involved in
programs dealing with the usage of
the Internet, wireless technology,
multimedia, and its uses. In the
multimedia module, the class
learned about making movies with
iMovie, using Photoshop to enhance
pictures, using LiveJournal for
blogging, and creating 3-D games.
The activities were very
interactive and the students were
able to do things on their own. The

On September 30, students from Mrs. Flesch’s class volunteered their time to the
Marion Regional Humane Society. Students worked hard to help clean cages, change
litter boxes, and sweep floors. They were assisted by Mrs. Loyd, Mrs. Langston, and
Ms. Debbie Jones. Students also donated needed supplies and money to the Humane
Society with the help of VHS’s own Beta Club and VHS faculty members. Pictured

JILG conducts I & I ceremony
The Jobs for Illinois Graduates
held the 10th annual Installation and
Initiation Ceremony on November
18th. JILG has been at VHS since
1996. The JILG class prepares
students for graduation and for
careers they will pursue after
graduation.
The class learns the 37 core
competencies of the Career
Association. JILG members must
learn how to get a job, keep a job,
and quit a job in the appropriate
manner.
The Initiation and
Installation Ceremony is the
process of the JILG members being
initiated and installed into the
Career Association.
The ceremony began with the
entrance of the members of the
JILG class. It continued with a
presentation of the highlights of
the achievements of its members.

University was the host of
the second annual Advanced
Technology
Showcase
on
November 7th. The VHS physics,
pre-calculus, and chemistry classes
were in attendance on that Friday.
The students witnessed many
technology and science-related
demonstrations that were displayed
by the IET department faculty and
students.
The students started off the
technology trip at 8:05 a.m. They
travelled by bus to the Cape
Girardeau campus.
Then they
spent the morning at the new Otto
and Delta Seabaugh Polytechnic
Building.
The students who attended
split into three separate groups to
attend the various presentations.
The three groups then attended
demonstrations.
They had the
chance to pick four of the many
presentations in the building, and
then attend each lecture.
Some of the lectures included
robotics,
photography,
laser
technology, and computer graphics
and animation. Cassie Martin, a
junior who attended the trip, said,
“My favorite session was the
computer graphics and animation.
We learned some interesting
Photoshop skills.”
Ms. Will-Henn, VHS physics
and pre-calculus instructor that
chaperoned the trip, said that
she was impressed with the IET
instructors and interested in the
way they involved science in their
presentations. “I hope that if
the classes attend the showcase
next year, that they have the
opportunity to do more hands on
demonstrations,” Ms. Will-Henn
stated.

The initiation of the members
took place soon after.
The
ceremony flowed smoothly and it
was interesting to see the time and
effort that JILG had put into their
activities.
Afterwards, there were many
refreshments served for the guests
and members that attended the
ceremony.
Student designs skateboard
Bryce Johnson a sophomore at VHS displays a skateboard that he constructed in Mr.
Sandfort’s wood shop class. Bryce decided to create the skateboard and painted
the board in school colors to show his school spirit. Mr. Sandfort teaches the many
different technics of lamination and bending of wood. Lamination allowed Bryce to
make his skateboard five layers, while at the same time the mold of a skateboard is
bending each layer to the skateboard shape.

Talon staff attends journalism seminar at Shawnee College
VHS Talon members attended
a journalism seminar on November
4th. It was held at Shawnee
Community College.
The conference was sponsored
by the college’s newspaper staff,
The Tempo.
The conference taught the Talon
students about copy editing, picture
taking skills, writing reviews, and
interviewing techniques. The Talon
staff learned many things that will
improve the paper.
Also, the Talon staff had
its newspaper critiqued. Sam
Blackwell from Southeast Missouri
University was the critic, and said
that the paper had several areas
that needed improvement, but that
overall The Talon was very good.
The conference came to a close
with a very informative keynote
presentation by Jak Tichenor, a
WSIU television producer. The
presentation was titled, “Why the
Media Matters.” The presentation
highlighted his media journalism
career, and told how others can
achieve greatness in the same way
he did.

FCCLA goes to SIUC for conference
On November 5th, the VHS
FCCLA chapter took part in their
annual district FCCLA conference
at SIU in Carbondale.
The group participated in many
small workshops, such as dating and
relationships, cosmetology, cake
decorating, drinking and driving,
STD’s, birth control awareness,
self defense, and culinary arts.
Each member paired up and took
part in two of the many workshops
offered.
Cassie Martin and Desiree Hill
participated in the cosmetology and
dating and relationship classes.
Desiree commented, “It was so
much fun! They had a lot to offer
and I learned a lot of interesting
facts that can make me a better
future leader.’’
Members had lunch at the
student center and nutritious snacks
were served.
The members later learned
many informative things from the
keynote speaker, Jeff Fritchnitch,
superintendent of Altamont High
School. He spoke about character
development and his bottom line
was, “Do what is right!”

Scholar Bowl buzzes in for their next season

This season
on Survivor, contestant Allison
Bean, whose love of traveling
brought her to Survivor, was
voted as a VHS queen candidate.
Allison Carole Bean is no bump on
a log! This girl participates in golf, basketball, pep club, student
council, Beta club, YFC, HOSA, Spanish club, Globetrotters, and
prom committee. This ambidextrous Harry Potter fan, who is
slightly obsessed with Disney (but not the channel), has a cat,
Bagherra, that looks like the panther from the Jungle Book, and a
dog named Lucy. This Survivor contestant has survived the island
so far, by chewing green Orbit gum, drinking Dr. Pepper, using
her amazing camping skills, and sleeping with her stuffed animal,
Floppy, that she has had since she was 3 years old. She has always
dreamed of being a queen candidate and believes that every little
girl dreams of being on the court at least once in her life. After
Allie successfully gets off the island she plans to go to SIUE, get a
Bachelor’s degree in nursing and then advance to become a nurse
practitioner. It may seem like Allie may love everything, but do
not let this girl fool you. She hates the J.G. Wentworth “It’s my
money and I need it now” commercials and dislikes the times in
the movie theaters when she has no room to prop her feet and
has to sit by strangers. So, even though this girl cannot do the
moon walk, cannot curl her tongue like a hot dog bun, and is
claustrophobic, she sounds like a worthy opponent.
Next Tuesday on Bob & Big, Bobby Hoffmann gets voted
as a homecoming king candidate for Vienna High School.
This nominee is no stick in the mud and stays busy with
baseball, golf, Spanish club, Globetrotters, FFA, Beta club,
student council, junior leadership, YFC, FCA, and pep
club, not to mention umpiring ball games and hunting. On
this all-new episode, viewers get to see Bob play a song for
Big using his piano skills. After the beautiful song from
Bob, they pack up their two dogs, Bluford and Maddie, a
pack of Wrigley Double mint gum, and a twelve-pack of
Coca-Cola for a good ole’ camping trip and head off to
the woods with the Faulkner “Hillbilly” Family and Mini
Horse, where Bobby comes face-to face-with his fear of
snakes.

Andrea Stepter is
one of four contestants
on this week’s all-new
episode of “NEXT-Our
Search for the Next
Homecoming Queen.” Andrea will be trying
to win us over as she condenses her stomach into the
hearts of millions.
Andrea didn’t get where she is
today by just watching the world pass by. This Queen
Candidate takes part in pep club, student council,
HOSA, leadership team, drama club, and if you can
believe it, the tennis team! What most of us don’t know
about our sassy contestant is she has a huge collection
of fuzzy boots, and stickers.
This talented singer has always dreamed of being
Homecoming Queen. In the future, Andrea plans to
go to college, get a good job, and have a family, but
not without dozens of long nights chewing strawberry
bubblicious, drinking gallons of grape soda, and of
course who could go one day without hearing the
dreaded “Head On” commercial. Spider hater, Andrea
Stepter is just hoping she won’t hear the word NEXT in
her search to become VHS’s next Homecoming Queen.
On this week’s episode of “Seinfeld”, our
guest star Daniel Kerley, who some of you may
know as DK, K-Dawgin, or even Dirty Dan The
Man Beast, will be nominated as a candidate
for King in this year’s VHS Homecoming. Even
though Daniel is a true salsa legend, he still
has time to participate in track, Beta club, and
cross country, not to mention meet such great
figures like John Shimkus, wear
his fedora hat proudly, and even write some
poetry in his spare time. DK even traveled to Belgium,
where he is planning to attend the local university to study
clinical psychology. You better believe he took his dog Todd,
his stuffed Meerkat Chandler Bing for that long plane ride
overseas. Sadly, Dirty Dan’s worst fear became a reality
when, in the plane’s rest room, he was sitting on the toilet
and when he stood up and flushed, the water overflowed
into his pants causing what some might say was a truly
“dirty” scene. Be sure to stay tuned for next week’s episode
when K-Dawgin shows off his singing talents when he tries
to out belt the singers from the J.G. Wentworth “opera”

Dr. Austin Adams lives up to his title of
being the champion of Ultimate Frisbee,
as well as ping pong, and driving the
coolest truck to work.

retired motocross racer also gets

King at VHS. Besides his special
talents at being a doctor, he
also specializes in Photoshop. Others
may know this nominee as A squared,

position because his worst fear is

Well I usually don’t read, but now I’m
reading Twilight. It’s great!
Last year, when I was in Jill’s skit, I had
to do the Superstar move in front of the
whole school. (I had to sniff my armpits
lol!)

Because we’re the top class!! lol
Babysitting! It’s always amazing.
