Newsletter 12 2015 - Avenel Primary School
Avenel Primary School promotes a nut and latex free school environment Email: [email protected] IMPORTANT DATES COMING UP Thursday 7th – Mother’s Day stall at school – 9.00am Monday 11th May – ESC evening 7-8pm Wednesday 13th May – School Library Bus Friday 15th May – Avenel Cross Country In the Junior Room we have been making ANZAC wreaths … investigating Avenel’s history ... and learning about procedural text. We followed instructions to make these paper lanterns. The next number of weeks will be a flurry of activity for our school. Between NAPLAN assessments, Cross Country events, excursions and camps there will be hardly a “down” moment between now and the end of the term. It is a great thing that we have such a vibrant school and I am looking forward to the rich learning that the remainder of the term will bring. Learning Is Infectious! Now that the weather has gotten a little bit colder, many of our students are spending the time before our first bell inside. Each morning as I wander around chatting to students, I marvel at the number of students who have begun their learning day well before our 9am bell. Very many of our 3 to 6 students are using the time after arrival to read a book or begin literacy activities. Our Preps are practising their newly acquired literacy skills with great gusto, running little group sessions to share their love of writing. What a great thing to see! Anne’s Long Service Leave Anne Tranter will be taking some well-earned Long Service Leave from May 11th to June 5th. We wish Anne all the best on leave; we have been lucky to secure the services of Fiona McCarthy (former Principal of Seymour Primary School) for the duration of Anne’s leave and welcome her skills and experience to our school. Football trials Congratulations to Gus Garner and Baxter Reid on being selected for the Seymour District football team. The boys will now go on and represent the Seymour District in upcoming inter-district matches. Well done also to Scott McMaster who also represented our school at the initial selection process. Once again, our school has punched well above its weight. Auskick Putting on my Auskick hat for a moment, it was my great pleasure to take 12 Avenel Primary School children to the MCG last Sunday to play a half-time game. The game was a wonderful experience for everyone involved and once again the behaviour of our students was exemplary. I have included some photos to give you a sense of the spirit of the day – let me tell you, I got quite a surprise when I was told that I had to wear the full AFL umpire’s kit! Grade 6 Transition: Euroa Secondary College Family Forum & Seymour College Open Day While we are not even half-way through Term 2, the transition processes for our Grade 6 students are already in the works. Euroa Secondary College will be running a family forum at our school on Monday 11th May from 7-8pm. While the forum is primarily aimed at students and families transitioning to high school, there is an open invitation to all members of the Avenel School community. Scott Watson (Principal) and the Euroa Secondary College Year 7 co-ordinator will be running the night. On Wednesday 20th May, Seymour College is holding an open day from 2pm to 7pm. Again, the open day is aimed at all members of our school community and is an opportunity to meet staff, view facilities and find out about the learning program at Seymour College. I highly recommend these events and applaud the high-schools for the work they are putting into their transition programs. Vandalism Unfortunately last weekend we had some unwelcome visitors to our school who took the opportunity to damage school property and cause disruption to our electrical and plumbing systems. It is disappointing that we have such anti-social behaviour within our community and as a result I need to issue the reminder that Government schools are not public places and that there is no general right for the public to enter school premises. Community vigilance on this issue would be of benefit to the wider school community. Cross Country Event –Parent Volunteers We are just over a week away from our Cross Country event to be held at Stewart Park on May 15th at 10am. The Stewart Park course has been a major success over the last two years and we are all looking forward to a great run amongst the gum trees. As always, there will be ample opportunity for parent involvement and we require quite a few volunteers to marshal runners along the course. If you can spare 2 hours on May 15th, we would greatly appreciate your help. Please contact the office if you are able to help out. NAPLAN On Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of next week, our Grade 3 and 5 students will be completing their NAPLAN assessments. NAPLAN assesses the literacy and numeracy skills of students and the assessments equate to a 50 minute assessment period on each day. At Avenel Primary School, we neither under-emphasise nor over-emphasise the importance of the NAPLAN assessments. NAPLAN data forms one component of the broad student data picture which we gather for each student.. In preparing our students for NAPLAN, we encourage them to focus on doing their best, trying hard and retaining perspective. If you would like further information on dealing with assessment nerves, there is a very useful article by parenting educator Michael Grosse at http://www.parentingideas.com.au/Blog/May-2011/Prepare-your-child-for-the-NAPLAN-tests All the best, Neil OTHER INFO YOU NEED TO KNOW …… LOST PROPERTY – Please take the opportunity to come in and check out the lost property box as it is OVERFLOWING!!!!
