WHAT IF YOUR BIG FISH
MIGHT BE A NEW PA STATE
RECORD? (PART 1 OF 2)
Just about all the fishermen I know are eternal
optimists. Every time they head out on the water, they eagerly anticipate catching the biggest
fish inhabiting that particular body of water. The
vast majority of the time, their wishful thinking
is just a dream. But what about that one time?
That once in a lifetime experience when you do
connect with a really big one and after you finally land the behemoth, you truly believe you
may have a potential PA state record fish of that
particular species in your hands. For the many
men, women, and youths from our area who
enjoy fishing, that possibility could become a
reality at some point in the future. What if it
happened to you? Would you know what constitutes a potential PA state record fish and how to
go about properly documenting your catch? It’s
worth exploring before that memorable event
arrives.
The State-Record Fish Program listing, rules,
and application are found on the PA Fish &
Boat Commission’s website (www.fish.state.
pa.us) and by following the links (Fish > Fishes). The rules are rather extensive and must
be followed in order for a catch to receive consideration. The PF&BC currently maintains
records for 32 different species and will not accept applications on any species not currently
on their listing. Some of the basic parameters
include the fish must be caught by legal means
on PA waters open to the public by a licensed
resident or nonresident angler. (Fish caught in
farm ponds on private property are not eligible
for consideration.) Applications submitted by
anglers under 18 require the signature of a parent or guardian.
If you do catch an exceptional fish worth consideration as a potential state record, the most
important thing after landing it is to have it
weighed as soon as possible on a scale certified for trade that provides a print-out or sticker. These scales are typically found at grocery
stores and markets that sell items by weight
and prominently display a county certification
label. Dead fish begin drying out and losing
weight soon after expiring, so keeping the fish
on ice and moist, or possibly alive in a live well,
until the official weigh-in is vital. At this time,
there is no provision in the PF&BC’s state record system for catch-and-release. The official
weigh-in must be witnessed by a non-bias third
party, someone other than the angler, his or
her fishing partners, or the scale operator; and
that witness must sign the application form.
Any potential record must exceed the current
PA state record fish by 2 or more ounces to be
considered a new record.
Remember to take several photos for documentation! Additionally, the fish must be officially certified for length and girth by an authorized PF&BC employee or an official measuring
station. There are currently only 43 certified locations across PA and unfortunately there are
no official measuring stations in Lawrence or
Beaver Counties. However, the closest ones are
in Butler County: O’Donnell’s Sport Shop (Portersville) and Appalachian Trails (Prospect),
and in Mercer County: R and L Bait & Tackle
(Greenville). Since a PF&BC employee must
verify the identification of the fish in a fresh or
frozen state, you may want to consider making
a trip to the PF&BC’s Northwest Regional office in Meadville during their business hours,
Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 4 PM, to have
the identification, length, and girth all done at
the same time.
Catching a potential new PA state record fish
is a significant accomplishment and while the
documentation and verification may seem like a
bureaucratic bother, it is critical to maintain the
integrity of the program. Those who follow the
rules on the application will be duly recognized
for their exceptional feat. Next week, we’ll take
a look at some existing PA state records and
make a few predictions on which ones could

The signs are there. Summer is coming to an
end. Just when we get to the point that it feels like
Summertime weather... it’s over. One hot week in
July and then we turn the calendar over to reveal
the month of August and the telltale sign of Back-ToSchool advertising.
The generation before mine has been trumpeting
the news that Summer is over since July 4th. It’s always puzzled me that folks focus on the end of Summer when the Summer Solstice, the first official day
of Summer, happened only a couple of weeks previous. To give them a little credit, this same group of
people are out planting flowers as soon as it thaws
enough to sink a spade into the ground. Are they optimists? It is far too early to avoid a killing frost, but
they plant anyway. If their Summer arrives in early
May it will last for about 60 days. That’s a whole
month shorter than what the calendar allows. I like
the early start but I want that extra month so It’s not
a deal I want to make.
I knew a man who made a living in the golfing
industry. He told me that golfing season peaks out
on July 4th. That sounds like a pretty short season
to me, but die-hard golfers like to get an early start
too. As soon as the weather is favorable, sometime
in May, they like to get out on the links even if it will
require a jacket and an umbrella. Optimistic souls?
That makes their Summer to be about 50 days long
which isn’t as short as I first thought, but I’m still not
buying in.
Schools are pushing to start earlier and end later.
If they finish during the first week of June and start
up again during the last week of August the Summer
is 80 days, give or take. The calendar gives us an additional week and a half. Since I want to keep those
extra days I’m not jumping on that deal either.
Summer for vacation spots and swimming pools
commences around the Memorial Day holiday in
late May. Business tails off drastically when Labor Day rolls around. This year it leaves 105 days.
Though neither the beginning date or the ending
date is official, it makes for a longer Summer than
the 90 days between the Summer solstice in June
and the official end of Summer in September. The vacation people are giving us an extra couple of weeks,
though I think it’s more about getting things off to
an early start and encouraging us to end with a bang.
Whatever the reason, it’s a good deal that I might be
agreeable to.
This year we couldn’t rely on the weather to give
us a beginning date for Summer. Though it wasn’t
warm, we had our dry midsummer weather in April.
Our April showers didn’t arrive until June. Well, I
guess we can’t call what we got in the way of rainfall in June anything that resembled showers. It was
more like monsoon season.
If Summer lasted from the end of school until the
beginning of the back-to-school sales, it was a little
longer than what golfers are willing to settle for. If
June had no Summer weather and the optimists were
allowed to wrap up Summer on July 4th, then Summer only lasted 4 days. That has to be some kind of
record, and a depressing one at that.
As for me, I’ll stick with what the Julian Calendar
says. Summer began in late June which means we
only lost about a week to the rains. Hey, I still have a
month and a half of Summer left. But I’m choosing to
ignore that there are some leaves falling on the patio

Envelopes, “a flat paper container, as for a letter or thin
package,
usually having a
gummed flap or
other means of
closure.” Everyone knows what they are but
here are some very cool uses
for them in your scrapbook.
• Envelope Collage: Take a few envelopes (as
many as you can fit) of different sizes, shapes,
and colors. Create a seemingly random arrangement of them making
sure to be able to still use them.
Now you can place pictures, art
work, trinkets, party mementos
and more into the envelopes
and still be able to take them
out for showing off.
• Envelope Card Holder: Use envelopes to
hold special cards inside a scrapbook. You
can place 1 or 2 envelopes on a page and then
place 4-5 cards inside the envelopes. It is a
great way to keep many cards in your scrapbook without taking up a lot of space gluing
them to a page.
• Envelope Scrapbook: Using envelopes with
brad style closures you can join many envelopes using metal rings, ribbons, or string on
the opposite end from the opening. Then you
can decorate the outside of the envelopes and
place mementos inside.
• Embellishments: They make
small envelopes that you can
use for little embellishments as
well. You can add your own spin
to the mini envelopes to make
them fit your theme.

Is Somebody Singing?

From 200 miles above Earth, Chris Hadfield,
Canadian astronaut and commander of the International Space Station, joined in song with a group
of students in a studio on Earth. Together they
performed “Is Somebody Singing,” co-written by
Hadfield and Ed Robertson.
One phrase of the song caught my attention: “You
can’t make out borders from up here.” Although we
humans draw many lines to separate ourselves from
one another—national, ethnic, ideological—the
song reminded me that God doesn’t see such
distinctions. The important thing to God is that we
love Him and each other (Mark 12:30-31).
Like a loving father, God wants His family united.
We cannot accomplish what God has for us to do if
we refuse to be reconciled with one another. In His
most impassioned prayer, on the night before He
was crucified, Jesus pleaded with God to unite His
followers: “That they all may be one, as You, Father,
are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in
Us” (John 17:21).
Singing illustrates unity as we agree on the lyrics,
chords, and rhythms. Singing can also promote
unity as it binds us together in peace, proclaims
God’s power through praise, and demonstrates
God’s glory to the world.

Recipe Corner
3 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
Zucchini
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 cup egg substitute
1/3 cup canola oil
1 teaspoon grated lemon rind
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 large egg, lightly beaten
1 1/2 cups sugar
3 cups shredded zucchini (12 ounces)
1/4 cup coarsely chopped walnuts, toasted
Cooking spray
Preheat oven to 350°. Lightly spoon flour into dry
measuring cups; level with a knife. Combine flour
and next 4 ingredients (through baking soda) in a
large bowl. Combine egg substitute and next 4 ingredients (through egg) in a large bowl; add sugar,
stirring until combined. Add zucchini; stir until well
combined. Add flour mixture; stir just until combined. Stir in walnuts. Divide batter evenly between
2 (8”x4”) loaf pans coated with cooking spray. Bake
for 1 hour or until a wooden pick inserted in center
comes out clean. Cool 10 minutes in pans on a wire
rack; remove from pans. Cool completely on wire
rack. Yield: 2 loaves

many of my hedges and
trees in several years,
and some of them have
grown wild and raggedlooking. If they’re past
the blooming stage, is it
safe to trim them? Also,
any tips to make this

A: Trying to tackle all
of the shrubbery and
trees in your yard can
be daunting, even when
it hasn’t been several
years since their last
pruning. The best thing
to do is take an initial
tour of your yard with
notebook in hand. Mentally split the yard into
several sections, and
then note what needs to
be done in each: trimming, pruning or even
removal of foliage. Next,
tackle each section one
at a time. Depending on
your schedule, you may
need to do one section
each day. A particularly
foliage heavy section
may take an entire
weekend. You might
need help from friends
or relatives to take care
of large or excessively
high hedges, meaning
you’ll need to plan a
time for them to come
over. And if a tree needs
complex trimming — for
example, its branches
are encroaching on the
roof or on power lines
— you’ll need to arrange
for a professional tree
trimmer to inspect it,
provide an estimate and
do the work. Pruning
Since 1905
on your own takes a
little practice, but don’t
worry too much about
mistakes, as they will
eventually grow out.
Plants that have already
bloomed can be pruned
without a problem, and
plants or trees that are
still blooming are, by
this time of year, safe to
trim. As you’ll likely be
piling up a lot of branches and limbs, check with
your local government
about proper disposal of
yard waste. Most have
programs in place, such
as scheduled pickup
dates during the growing season, and guidelines for containers or
bags that the trimmed
branches should be
placed in. If you hire a
tree trimmer, be sure
to ask how branches will
be disposed of, and if
that cost is included in
the estimate.
