Monday 11 November 8pm SUMMER IN FEBRUARY (15) – 101 mins Set against a backdrop of the beautiful Cornish coast, this is a moving tale of love and loss among a bohemian colony of artists. Taking place shortly before the outbreak of the First World War, this romantic period drama is adapted from Jonathan Smith’s much loved novel. Monday 18 November 8pm BEFORE MIDNIGHT (15) – 109 mins Whether or not you have been following Celine and Jesse’s previous romantic encounters in Before Sunrise and Before Sunset, you are sure to be captivated by this acclaimed film. Rarely has a relationship been portrayed as truthfully as by the excellent Julie Delphy and Ethan Hawke. Monday 25 November 8pm THE ACT OF KILLING (15) – 115 mins A totally unique and tremendously powerful documentary. Two former members of an Indonesian death squad, unpunished for their horrific crimes, are challenged to make a series of films recreating their past acts. Monday 2 December 8pm BLANCANIEVES (12A) – 102 mins In 1920s Seville, the daughter of a bullfighter runs away with a troupe of dwarves to escape her cruel step-mother. Much like The Artist, but with a more ambitious visual style, this is a contemporary silent film, a captivating and expertly crafted Spanish twist on the Snow White tale. A group of old friends get together to reattempt an epic pub crawl, but end up fighting for their lives and for the future of mankind. Smart and very funny, this is a thoroughly enjoyable romp. Monday 6 January 8pm ABOUT TIME (12A) – 123 mins This latest romantic comedy from Richard Curtis takes the director in a new direction with a fantastical twist. In this talk, Stephen Miller, Community Outreach Officer for the Wordsworth Trust, will explore the life and writing of Dorothy, looking at her letters, diaries and poetry which reveal the events of her life through her own words, including the tragic end to her early childhood in Cockermouth. 11:30am - 12:30pm DISCOVERING DERVENTIO Mark Graham of Grampus Heritage & Training Ltd. will describe the latest findings arising from the 2012 archaeological dig on Roman Papcastle (Derventia) and the plans for the 2013 dig. The 2012 dig revealed the remains of a ‘mansion’ and two bath houses, making this one of the most important discoveries in the North of England for many years. There were some surprises too, including the discovery of a skeleton beneath the floor of one of the bath houses. To find out more, come to the lecture. The Kirkgate Centre was originally converted from a derelict Victorian school building in 1995, through the efforts of local people. The centre is run almost entirely by volunteers and is supported by 300 members. SUPPORT THE KIRKGATE AND SAVE MONEY! For only £10 (single), £18 (joint) or £22 (family) per year, you can become a member, entitled to discount off all events marked with D in the programme, or donate an extra £10 & become a Benefactor. At present we are looking in particular for Front of House for Monday film nights and Duty Managers. Full training will be provided for all volunteers.
