2016 FARMINGTON FESTIVAL
PARADE MARSHAL ANNOUNCED
The Farmington Festival
Committee is proud to announce
Judy Richards as the 2016 Farmington
Festival Parade Marshal. Judy was
born Aug. 8, 1941 in Meadville,
Pennsylvania. Her story with us
began when her family moved to
West Farmington in 1955. Four years
later Judy would be a graduate of
Farmington High School (Class of 59’).
In November of 1961 Judy married
a fellow by the name of Jim Richards.
Ten years later Jim became the mayor
of West Farmington, a position he
held for twelve years (1971-1983).
Jim and Judy have four children
and she is proud to say all four
graduated from the local school
system. Three of their children
graduated from Farmington and one
from Bristol. Judy was employed in
this same school system for 29 years.
Prior to her marriage with Jim,
she joined the West Farmington
United Methodist Church and has
been an active member ever since.
This same church rang the wedding
bells for Judy and Jim and in it, all
four of their children were baptized.
Judy went on to teach Sunday School
there for many years, VBS for more
than 20 years and headed up the
Kids Club for four years. Judy remains

active with the church by attending

If you are a voter, you have likely
received your voter card and sticker
from Judy as she always works during
Village elections.
Judy is active with the Women’s
Relief Corp and belongs to the
Cemetery Association in town.
She has resided in the Village and
Township for nearly 50 years. Judy
Richards certainly meets all of the
criteria to be our Parade Marshal
and we couldn’t be happier with our
selection.

2016 HONORARY COMMUNITY AWARD RECIPIENT
D
elores Stephens was born Dec.
29, 1941 to Eva and Frank Chokmay.
She is known to many as “Tootsie”, a
nickname given to her at birth by her
uncle.
In her early life, Delores enjoyed
bowling and dancing, collecting many
trophies doing both of these activities.
When Tootsie wasn’t dancing the night
away or knocking down pins, she could
be found at Johnson Rubber Company,
holding the position as HR for more
than 44 years. She is remembered by
many as the lady that hired them for
their first job.
Delores married in later years
and had two sons William David
Jr. and Jeffrey Stephens. From
David and his wife Kristina, she
has two grandsons (Matthew and
Jonathan Stephens) and she enjoyed
watching as many of their sports
activities that she was able to attend.
Spending quality time with them was
always important to her.
Supporting her community was
also a priority and she was very active in
local organizations in West Farmington.
She was a member of the VFW Ladies
Auxiliary, the United Methodist church
and is one of the original members of
the West Farmington Festival. She was
the one selling tickets in the festival
booth. One of her favorite festival
events was the Pie and Cake Auction.
Delores enjoyed trying out new
recipes, especially desserts. Her
family and friends looked forward to
her baking. She enjoyed making big
dinners and wanted to start a catering
business so everyone would be able to
enjoy her awesome cooking. Delores
enjoyed relaxing with a book and was
an avid reader of western romance
and many other stories. She watched
and followed her two favorite teams
the Cleveland Cavs and the Cleveland
Indians. She never missed a game of
either when they were on TV.
Our dear “Tootsie” was diagnosed
with breast cancer in 2009 and
underwent chemo and radiation
therapy until she went into remission.
The cancer returned however in late
2013. She fought her battle with cancer
until she passed away in her sleep Sept.
4, 2015 in the home of her son David.
She was a beautiful person with an
amazing soul and is missed by many
family and friends.
A TRUE LEADER AND PILLAR OF THE FESTIVAL COMMITTEE
I loved everything about Tootsie. She
was the definition of a true leader;
Tough when it was needed yet so
very supporting, well organized, well
informed, and most of all willing to
work just as hard as anyone. This year
has proven how extremely valuable
Tootsie was to the Festival Committee.
During the 2016 festival meetings,
as we were sorting out the changes
and updates from previous year, I
lost count of how many times I heard
someone reply “Tootsie handled that.”
It became strikingly obvious that she
was a pillar. To put it in perspective
the Festival Committee never had
“slouches” so for someone to be the
pillar of this committee was certainly
saying something!
In closing, I only knew Tootsie
from the Festival, but the time I did
spend with her was enough for me to
understand why she was so loved.
She is so very deserving of
the Honorary Community
Award. Thank you
Tootsie for being
such a wonderful
friend
and
t e a c h e r .
Although
a
challenge
without you,
I hope the
2016 Festival
has your seal
of approval.

2016 RECIPIENTS OF FESTIVAL SCHOLARSHIP ANNOUNCED
T
he Farmington Festival
Committee is proud to announce
the recipients of the 2016 Festival
Scholarships.
Hannah Kurtz from Bristolville,
seeking a major in Psychology,
wrote a compelling essay about
how to keep Farmington’s oldfashioned appeal while integrating
updated amenities to provide
appropriate growth. She was
active in several school activities
including but not limited to Beta
Club, NHS, Prom Committee, Office
Aid, Yearbook, Volleyball and
Softball. She was the recipient of
several area awards for leadership,
choir, track and volleyball records.
She served her community in
many ways including Mission
dinners sponsored by her church.
We congratulate Hannah for all
of her accomplishments and wish
her all the best with her future in
Psychology.
Have Fun
and Enjoy the
Festival!
Ashley Lamosek of Farmington,
another scholarship recipient

Thank you to all of the

an extremely difficult decision as
all entries were well written. Best
of luck to the recipients! We look

hen it comes to local history
it would be hard to surpass the
knowledge of local store owner
Kevin Bontrager. This coming
from a guy that studies the roots
of Farmington on a regular basis.
Thankfully many of our residents
and their families know of Kevin
and contact him with items of
historical value to Farmington
before anything happens to it.
Recently he acquired a collection
of Farmington history that would
have been devastating to lose if
it were to have gone to auction
or worse yet thrown away. Kevin
loves to talk about Farmington’s
past as well as display it so if
you are wondering about the
history of this little yet historically
significant Northwestern Trumbull
County town you should stop by
and chat with Kevin.
During the Festival Kevin will have
an area in the back suited to sit
at for a comfortable opportunity
to look at photos, postcards,
documents and other ephemera
so make sure to stop by.
Kevin and I both talk on occasion
about starting a historical society
but until that time comes we
will continue to share as much
knowledge as we can about
Farmington.

Solomon Bond owned a majority of Farmington Township.
First settlers (David Curtis and Capt. Lewis Wolcott) from Vienna Township.
First birth was Caroline Wolcott on Sept. 12th (became Mrs. Geo. Holmes).
First store (S.E. Farmington Centre) operated by Mr. Stewart of Vienna Township.
Farmington was known as Henshaw because of it’s “owner” Samuel Henshaw.
First school in Farmington was a log building built on the N.E. Corner of Farmington Centre.
First teacher was Miss Almia Hannah.
First school in West Farmington was a log building.
First teacher in West Farmington was Nancy Wolcott (known as Aunt Nancy).
First election was held on July 4th.
First prepatory school in northern Ohio (Farmington Academy) is built on the south side of Main St.
Farmington Post Office is established on State Rd. The Postmaster was Mr. Epaphroditus Fuller.
Farmington Academy building became the Globe Hotel (operated by Elizur Trunkey) when it was
decided that the Academy needed to be moved to a larger site.
Farmington Normal School campus is established by the Congregationalists, built on three acres
north of Main St. (later named College St.).
Erie Conference (Methodist Episcopal Church) takes control of Farmington Normal School. The name
is changed to the Farmington Academy for a short period then Western Reserve Seminary.
First principal was James A. Greer.
Notable teacher was Platt R. Spencer (Spencerian System of Writing).
Expansion begins on Western Reserve Seminary to increase accommodations to 400. The brick was
laid by Allen Groff aka “The Shouting Methodist”. Expansion included a larger hall above the chapel,
wings added to both sides of the college and a large wooden belfry was constructed. Classes included English, Literature, Science, Math, Latin and Languages, Commercial and Business Art, Instrumental and Vocal Music and more.
Grading begins for a proposed railroad (Clinton Air Line) just north of the village
but it never completed.
Methodist Church constructed. It was originally to be brick but the brick crumbled in the kiln.
Cory Hall constructed about 200 ft. east of the Western Reserve Seminary thanks to the donor
Dr. J.B. Cory and his wife from Cleveland (both members of the Farmington Academy). The hall was
three stories (84x30) and had 27 rooms including a teacher’s apartment, parlors, reading rooms, kitchen, dining room and Philomathean library. The third floor held the ladies dormitory. Tracks laid for the Narrow Gauge Railroad (Painesville & Youngstown RR) circa 1860s.
Thunder Castle built. It was a two story (70x34) Young Men’s Hall.
Charles Kennedy, future author of “The History of Cleveland” roomed at Thunder Castle. Apparently he was look out for a prank that occurred in the middle of the night when boys tied a rope to the belfry and rang the Seminary Bell, awaking everyone in town. The boys could have easily been the Hobart twins who were known as pranksters.
Professor Elisha Bates Webster and wife Delia move to the area and are credited with helping increase much needed attendance to over 300. Core group of teachers included:
Daniel and Sarah Branch, Grace P. Raymond, Mabel Webster Osmer (daughter of Elisha, wife of Lynn),
