AMERICAN ENCOUNTERS: ANGLO-AMERICAN
PORTRAITURE IN AN ERA OF REVOLUTION
SEPTEMBER 28, 2014–JANUARY 18, 2015
In this exhibition, students will get a close look at five
portraits that demonstrate how portraiture style evolved
in the late 18th and early 19th centuries as American
and European painters influenced each other. Be sure to
request to see American Encounters in conjunction with
your I See History or HIGHlights tour.

CÉZANNE AND THE MODERN: MASTERPIECES OF
EUROPEAN ART FROM THE PEARLMAN COLLECTION
OCTOBER 25, 2014–JANUARY 11, 2015
Experience masterpieces of modern art, including works
created by artists Cézanne, Toulouse-Lautrec, and Van
Gogh. Students will get a glimpse the world of European
art during a period of revolutionary change through
spectacular landscapes, portraits, and sculptures.

“MAKE A JOYFUL NOISE”: RENAISSANCE ART
AND MUSIC AT FLORENCE CATHEDRAL

This exhibition brings together art and music of Renaissance Florence. Students will have the opportunity to see
large handmade choir books and Luca della Robbia’s
stunning marble sculptures.

GORDON PARKS: THE SEGREGATION STORY
NOVEMBER 15, 2014–JUNE 7, 2015
This exhibition unveils a broad selection of images from
Parks’s powerful 1956 photo essay The Restraints: Open
and Hidden, which portrays the common humanity of
his fellow Americans going about daily life during the
era of segregation in the South. Originally commissioned for Life magazine and never before exhibited in
depth, the work represents one of Parks’s earliest social
documentary studies on color film.

In these one-hour tours, our trained guides,
or docents, will lead your students in an
interactive experience that supports twentyfirst-century learning, visual literacy, and
differentiated learning styles.

HIGHLIGHTS
HIGHlights tours offer students an overview
of the High’s collection by comparing and
contrasting select objects. Students will use
questions, observations, and discussion to discover meaning in works of art that date from
the fourteenth through twenty-first centuries.
Using their twenty-first-century thinking
skills, students can experience interactive tours
focused on architecture, women artists, narrative art, and more! Contact the School and

own idea for a tour.

CELEBRATE BLACK HISTORY
Celebrate black history throughout the school year, not just in February. On this tour,
students will examine works of art by African and African American artists as well as
depictions of African American life. Students will consider art as social commentary,
look at the influence of African art and culture, and learn about regional and national
black history.

I SEE LITERACY
I See Literacy offers an innovative cross-disciplinary approach for fourth-grade students
to construct meaning through the spectrum of literacy: reading, writing, listening, speaking, and viewing. Pre- and post-tour classroom materials encourage students to use
I See Literacy as a springboard for language arts and visual arts activities.
GRADE: 3 – 5 | CAPACITY: 120 students | VA ´ LA
Character Study: Students have the opportunity to extend their reading of a work of art in a hands-on drawing
activity where they will design and illustrate a page from a graphic novel based on characters found in the works of art.
COST: $2/student | Must be booked in conjunction with an I See Literacy tour.
I SEE HISTORY
Guided by the essential question “What can we learn about people from what they
made, owned, and used?” fifth-grade students will explore American history by connecting prior classroom experience and gallery activities with the High’s permanent
collection. I See History incorporates themes that include freedom and equality, courage
and leadership, creativity and ingenuity, and democracy.

DIKENGA: DISCOVER AFRICAN ART
Works from West African traditions will
guide students through the African art
gallery following the circular path of the
dikenga, the Kongo cosmogram that charts
birth, adulthood, elders, and ancestors along
the universal pathways of life.

Design thinking is the focus of this exciting
and interactive docent-led tour and hands-on
workshop.

TAKE A WALK ON THE WILD SIDE! ANIMALS IN ART
Using animals as an entry point to exploring art, students will learn how artists have
used different materials to depict animals across cultures and time periods. Students
will take a safari through the permanent collection as they find, discuss, and make
inferences about different types of animals and their various characteristics and habitats.
This walk on the wild side will also include a hands-on workshop where students
will be inspired to construct their own creative creatures.

PREVIEW
This tour is for budding artists in preschool, pre-K, Head Start, and homeschool programs. A teaching artist will guide children in an exploration of color, line, and shape
through story time, gallery activities, and art-making.
GRADES: 3–5 | COST: $75/class | CAPACITY: 24 students | VA
FIRST LOOK
The fundamental elements of art—line, color, shape, and texture—are the focus of
this introductory tour of the High’s permanent collection. Students will create their own
works of art and make connections between works they have viewed in the galleries and
various art-making processes.

SCHEDULING A TOUR
THERE ARE TWO WAYS YOU CAN SCHEDULE A TOUR:
Complete the school tour order form online at High.org/schooltours.
Call 404-733-4468 and speak to a scheduling coordinator.
A non-refundable $65 deposit is required at time of booking.
Docent-guided tours and workshops are based on availability and must be requested three or more weeks in advance. If
you must cancel your tour, notify the scheduling coordinator at least three weeks in advance. One adult chaperone per
seven students is required for audio-guided and docent-guided tours. Required chaperones enter free; additional
chaperones can come for an additional cost. Details about your tour logistics will be provided prior to your visit.
ART ACCESS: The High wants to help remove the barriers and obstacles for schools that otherwise would not be
able to visit the Museum. The Art Access program offers free admission and/or transportation to a limited number of
students in all grade levels from qualifying Title 1 public schools in the state of Georgia. For details and an application

Gordon Parks: The Segregation Story
VISUAL LITERACY WORKSHOP is a hands-on, arts-integrated workshop. Participants will learn
practical techniques for encouraging visual literacy in their classrooms.
TEACHING WITH PRIMARY AND SECONDARY SOURCES WORKSHOP takes a look at our permanent collection via object-based learning. Participants will receive tips and techniques on how to
use primary and secondary sources in their classrooms. Offered by appointment only.
