The Lions are looking to “climb” the ladder of success as the season unfolds. When you see an oak ladder on the sidelines during the season you will understand what it signifies. The Lions are hoping to make the climb one rung at a time. “We have a lot of experienced players back this season,” said secondyear Head Coach T.J. Daniel. “Some of our players gained valuable experience throughout last season and we are hoping that pays off this year. “Our slogan is ‘Climb,’ and that’s what we hope to do.” The Lions kick off the 2014 season against Middle Tennessee Christian at Schwartz Field Friday (Aug. 22). It is the first of four home games in the first six contests. In fact, Cannon County will play five of its first eight games at home. “The early season is key for us,” said senior Ethan Smith. “We have worked hard throughout the offseason and we have had a good preseason. We have to protect our home. Three of the first four games are at home so hopefully that will work to our advantage.” After opening against Middle Tennessee Christian, Cannon County travels to Jackson County before playing host to Red Boiling Springs and rival DeKalb County. Cannon County’s offense has been non-existent the last two years but the Lions are hoping experience and some new players at skill positions will improve the output in 2014. Senior Jake Hoskins is back on the gridiron after not playing the previous two seasons. Hoskins expects to see action at quarterback, running back and receiver on offense, while also helping in the Cannon County defensive backfield. Hoskins will provide the Lions with a dual threat under center and will operate out of the wildcat package. Sophomore Josh Walkup got his feet wet under center when he shared duty with A.J. Daniel at quarterback last season. He is more of a prototypical dropback quarterback and also expects to help put a spark in the offense. “I think we are better prepared and have more of an understanding of the offense,” Walkup said. “A lot of the players have been on the field and no what they are doing. We just have to execute.” Cannon County’s offensive backfield also should be improved with Hoskins, A.J. Daniel and Case Isenhart in the mix. The receiving corps should also be deep with Wilder Mankin, Bo Bryson, A.J. Daniel, Smith, Forrest Mason, Austin Brock, Seth Woods, Jeremy Litchford, Anton Knox and Jake Walkup seeing action. “We have several different weapons in the passing attack and they all bring See CLIMB, page 5 JOEL FRANKLIN photo Defensive back/returner Jeremy Litchford, 18, is primed for a big season in his return from a broken collarbone. Fall Sports Preview, Cannon Courier, Aug. 20, 2014 - Page 5 CLIMB... something different to the table,” Coach Daniel said. “The biggest key is we must execute and eliminate costly turnovers that have hurt us in the past.” One reason for optimism is an experienced offensive line that should better protect the quarterback and create more running lanes for Cannon County’s stable of backs. Leading the way in the trenches will be senior David Fonoti, Daniel Davis, Jacob Duggin, Terry Parker, Jeremiah Mooneyham and Billy Motlow. Sophomore Makai Fonoti is also a beast up front and should make a difference. These guys have to be in great shape because most of them also play along the defensive line. “We have quality players up front and we have worked hard during the offseason,” Duggin said. “We are in good shape and we have to be but the big thing is we need to stay healthy because we don’t have a great deal of depth. That’s the biggest thing.” Cannon County’s defense showed gains and signs of improvement in 2013. That unit hopes to climb another step in a positive direction this season and, like the offense, has several quality players back who should make an immediate impact. The middle of the defense is filled with playmakers, such as Bryson, Isenhart, Eldon Resco and Jake Walkup. Hoskins is also expected to make significant progress for the defense. Cannon County’s secondary also brings a wealth of experience. Ethan Smith, Josh Walkup, A.J. Daniel, Jeremy Litchford, Wilder Mankin and Austin Brock making chief contributions. Brock was a huge surprise in 2013 as he made significant strides and become of the team’s most reliable cover corners. He had two interceptions and has enjoyed an outstanding preseason. “We have the parts to make improvement in several areas and the defensive backfield is one of those,” Coach Daniel said. “Experience does not mean you are going to win but it gives you more of a chance. The big thing for us is with the experience we have more players who understand terminology and were to be in certain situations. We haven’t had to spend as much time coaching what we have already taught. They have done a good job retaining information so we have made progress there.” The Lions are hoping to make more progress throughout the season as they look to climb the ladder of success.
