AccommodationTypesandDescriptions
Albergues—7 nights Albergues are similar to hostels. They are comprised of one or more rooms of bunk beds. The rooms are shared by men and women (co‐ed). Our group may have a room to ourselves, or we may share rooms with other individuals and/or groups. Sometimes pillows/blankets/sheets/towels are provided. Albergues are the most common type of accommodation along the Camino, and great places to meet and interact with people from all over the world. If you can’t share a room with strangers, don’t sign up for this trip. Notice how the bunk beds have a top and a bottom bed. We all take our turns to occupy the top and bottom bunks. We alternate so each person gets a top bunk ½ of the time—no one is excused! Most bunk beds have ladders (but some don’t, so you may have to climb on the bed frame). If you can’t climb up to the top bunk, don’t sign up for this trip. There WILL be snoring (and other loud/rude noises) in the albergue. Sometimes it’s pretty loud. You need to bring earplugs. We can’t complain about it—there’s nothing we (or anyone else) can do about it. If you can’t deal with loud noises and snoring, don’t sign up for this trip. To The End Of The Way‐‐Accommodation Types And Descriptions.Docx Page 1 Albergues (continued) These are examples of typical shared bathrooms. Usually (but not always) the bathrooms are gender‐specific. We take turns with our showers in the evenings, and we are patient with others in the mornings when we are getting ready to depart. It is generally not a problem. If you can’t share a bathroom with others (including strangers and possibly opposite‐gender people), don’t sign up for this trip. This is typically how we do laundry in albergues—hand wash in sinks provided for that purpose and then dry on a clothesline somewhere. Many albergues have laundry machines or will do the laundry for you—it’s best to combine your things with others’ so as to make it cost‐effective. Hand laundry is free. Machine laundry is 5‐6€ per load wash & dry. To The End Of The Way‐‐Accommodation Types And Descriptions.Docx Page 2 Pensións—9 nights A Pensión is a small family‐run hotel or guest house. In pensións, we will have double‐occupancy rooms (a room with 2 people) or single‐occupancy rooms (with 1 person). Single occupancy rooms are subject to the single supplement (additional cost) described in the trip pricing. Rooms generally have private, en suite baths (although in some rare cases, rooms may share baths). In Europe (and in particular along the Camino) it is unusual to find a traditional “double” bed—most double rooms consist of two single beds, which are sometimes placed close together. Queen‐size or King‐size beds are extremely unlikely to be found in a pensión, and we should not count on it. Sometimes the rooms may seem a bit outdated, but they are always clean and well‐kept. Here are some examples of pensión rooms: This is a typical breakfast along the Camino. It consists of toasted bread with butter and jam, coffee or tea, and juice. If you have traveled in Europe you may be familiar with a larger breakfast or a breakfast buffet. This is uncommon along the Camino. If you want more than this for breakfast, you will need to buy it and bring it. To The End Of The Way‐‐Accommodation Types And Descriptions.Docx If you have any questions or concerns about any of the accommodations, or any aspect of the trip, please contact the trip leader before signing up. Remember: your deposit is non‐refundable! Page 3 Camino de Santiago‐‐To the End of The Way
