L.A. HOME DESIGN ( ) PAPER ALIX SOUBIRAN A L I X S O U B I RA N loves to make a scene. The Parisian-born artist, who resides in Los Feliz, launched her high-end wall coverings six years ago by hand-painting designs and digitally reproducing them on paper. Soubiran’s Princes & Crows line is informed by her French roots and just about anything bearing the patina of age. “I love tweaking old things and redrawing them,” says Soubiran, who has vivid memories of a Zuber panoramic wallpaper that lined her grandfather’s library. “In my work I revisit the past and think about how I can bring it back to life.” Her latest collections include 1910, with patterns based on her trove of antique lace and embroidery, while 29 Palms is a throwback to early artists’ depictions of distant shores. She’s also got a modern, ironic side. “L.A. Toile” appears to be a traditional toile de Jouy print, but a closer look reveals pastoral figures toting cell phones, boom boxes, and AK-47s. For children’s rooms her storybook style features characters from the forest, sea, and circus. Soubiran offers two custom options: interpretations of Tiepolo’s pen-and-ink drawings of elephants and acrobats, which can be layered onto existing designs. 213-2715609 or princesandcrows.com. » EMILY YOUNG ( SO YOU WANT TO BUY LOCAL ) 144 SIT BACK CAMEO APPEARANCE GOT GAME BUBBLE UP ¬Frank Gehry came up with the cardboard “Wiggle" chair more than 40 years ago; it's still around. » $1,140 at Jules Seltzer, 8833 Beverly Blvd., L.A., 310-274-7243. ¬With X-acto knife precision Elsa Mora spends weeks assembling elaborately detailed 3-D wall art made of acid-free paper. » Starts at $600 at couturiergallery.com. ¬Clare Graham scores recycling points for seeking out vintage Scrabble boards and gluing them together to top off occasional tables. » $300-$500 at claregraham.com. ¬The "Music Legs LOS ANGELES MARCH 2014 Glob" lamp by BallNogues Studio glows through a shell of molded paper pulp, a recycled material that's also biodegradable. » $495 at fifthfloorgallery.com.
